This tutorial and the included screenshots were created by Faylen. My only contribution was to reformat it as a forum thread, with Faylen's permission. The original tutorial, which you can download in MS Word format, is linked at the end of this post, and the original thread an be found here: http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=38465

You can click on the images for a full-sized version

1) Here’s your opening screen after you select “Create Parts.” “Start New Project” gests you going on your clothes.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor01-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor01.png)

2) This is the next thing you will see – your mannequin, which can be changed to any of the sexes, ages, or body types in the game by clicking on the buttons circled in blue.

Across the top you will see the clothing categories. Clicking on one of these will bring up thumbnails of all the available clothes in that category for that age and sex of sim. I’m picking “Everyday” here.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor02-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor02.png)

3) This is the screen you will see in Bodyshop after you click on “Start New Project.” Click on “Create Clothing.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor03-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor03.png)

4) Find the outfit you want to recolor in the thumbnails and click on it. It will appear on the mannequin. Click on “Export Selected Textures” to get it into Photoshop.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor04-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor04.png)

5) Before you can do anything with it in Photoshop, though, it needs to have a name! Pick something that will remind you of what it is, no spaces or punctuation marks. I usually use something similar to the existing texture filenames, like “af” for adult female or “tm” for teen male, then the clothing type – dress, jeans, etc. It’s up to you what works best for you.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor05-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor05.png)

6) I’ve decided to call this one “recolordress.” Brilliant. Once the project has been named, you click on “Accept Project Name” and you’re ready to start making changes. You’ll see the following screen in Bodyshop next:

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor06-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor06.png)

7) Leave this open, but don’t do anything yet. You’ll come back to this screen to see how your clothing is looking, and nothing is set in stone until you import the saved file into your game – and even then, you can still go back and tweak it if you need to. On to Photoshop. Start it up...

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor07-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor07.png)

8) Here’s your first Photoshop Screen. Select “Open” from the File menu.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor08-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor08.png)

9) You’ll have to go through a few screens to get to where you want, so at the risk of dumbing this down too much, we’ll go step by step. You’re going to open “My Documents.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor09-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor09.png)

10) Next Open “EA Games.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor10-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor10.png)

11) Now... open “The Sims 2.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor11-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor11.png)

12) In “The Sims 2” you’ll see “Projects”. Open this next...

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor12-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor12.png)

13) And here’s our “recolordress” folder. Open it up and you’ll see...

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor13-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor13.png)

14) These are the files in our “recolordress” folder. Select the texture, not the alpha. You’ll see the thumbnail below with what it looks like.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor14-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor14.png)

15) Your texture image will show up like this. You’ll see I’ve selected Image, then gone down to Adjustments, then right and down to Hue/Saturation and that’s where you’ll want to click.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor15-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor15.png)

16) Here’s your Hue/Saturation window. Check Colorize. I didn’t do anything to get this color. Don’t panic. This hasn’t even been applied, much less saved. You can move the sliders around until you get something you like.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor16-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor16.png)

17) See? This is kind of a fun color. Keep in mind that this will affect the entire file. A simple recolor like this will alter the color of the entire outfit, because nothing has been deselected. That’s for another tutorial.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor17-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor17.png)

18) Now that we’ve got the color we want, we need to “Save As.” Important because...

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor18-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor18.png)

19) We’re going to overwrite the existing texture file. Make sure whenever you play around with this that the file type is BMP, and the filename doesn’t say “copy” in it, or you won’t get it to stick. Not a problem with a recolor, but something to keep in mind for later.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor19-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor19.png)

20) Here’s what you see next. Click OK.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor20-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor20.png)

21) Again, click OK.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor21-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor21.png)

22) No when we go back to Bodyshop and click on “Refresh preview Sim”, you’ll see the recolored version of the outfit. If you don’t like it, go back to Photoshop and tweak it some more, the same way you recolored it in the first place. Each time you “save as” and replace the texture file, you’ll be able to refresh and see how it looks in Bodyshop.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor22-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor22.png)

23) This is your final step. Name your creation (the name will appear when you mouse over it in Create-A-Sim) and Import to the game. It will show up as an Everyday outfit in CAS. It’s also still in projects in Bodyshop unless you choose to deleted it. (“Load Saved Project”, select “recolordress” or whatever you’ve named the file, click on the trashcan icon in the lower right.) It’s also still in Project in My Documents/EA Game/The Sims 2 unless you choose to delete it. Deleting it from either of these will not delete it from the game.

I got it and it opened fine. For those who don't use MSWord much, you might wanna make sure you have 200 or higher or it won't load right. There's alot of images on it and i will use it as a reference

It I might add in something as well: You can get (Adobe) Photoshop Pro for free by downloading it from Download.com (151MB, includes Image Writer). DSL/Broadband is reccommended as it takes about 2 hours with narrowband and only 20 mins with a high bandwith connection.

This sounds brilliant. I would love to know if Photoshop is the only programme that you can recolour with.

Adobe Photoshop Elements ($99 US) and Jasc PaintShop Pro ($95 US) are both good alternatives. Both have free trials you can download to see if you're interested in buying.

GIMP has a free windows version (http://gimp.org). I've never tried it, but it's got a good reputation.

I have a question...is there a way to change the background color in Photoshop (make it lighter) so it's easier to see darker colored outfits you want to recolor? I tried recoloring a dark sweater dress and it was fine until I viewed it in Bodyshop and I discovered I forgot to recolor the sleeves only because I couldn't SEE them! Thanx for any help you can offer. You've inspired me to try skinning cuz your tutorials are so easy to follow=)

Help! I've done everything you said and when I click on the refresh Sim in Body Shop it's not working. Am I saving it in the wrong spot? Please help. Thank you!
PS I'm using Photo Impact. (An older version)

Worked like a charm for me. BTW -- same instructions work wonders in Paint Shop Pro 8. *smiles* For those of us who aren't Photoshop people. :P

OK, regarding the background in Photoshop, you can change the color without affecting the outfit, because that part of the image isn't exposed on the outfit. Make it any color you want.

As far as the Photo Impact question, it's not a program I'm familiar with. One of the things that can happen with photoshop, though, is that it will attempt to "save as" a texturecopy.bmp, which you need to avoid - no "copy" in the file name. Sometimes it'll also try to save it as a .psd file, and you need to change it to .bmp or it won't work. Check those things in Photo Impact - if it's not doing either, tell me in a little more detail, and I'll see if I can help.

This is so cool! The tutorial worked great, Took me a minute, but I found the Hue/Satuation under "adjust" and not "image". At first I used "color balance" then red/blue/green" which also worked good. Point being you're tutorial really helped me and now I can play all night making recolors! Thanks soooo much!

I have Photodraw and I am learning how to recolor.

Everything goes OK until I try to save as my recolor under a Windows Bitmap extension.

When I go to refresh, nothing changes.

What am I doing wrong?

thanks for any help!

Hi Faylen

Great tutorial.....

I am trying to learn to recolor.....however I have run into a problem and need a little push......

In step #18, where you click on File/Save As/.......I do not have this option...I can click on File but none of the options under the drop down including "Save As" is available.......the only way I can save is on the Hue/Saturation Box and then it will only allow me to save it as a Hue/Sat. Settings (*.AHU) file........

I am using Photoshop V8.0 CS.........Is this a different version than you are using?

Many thanks

Check the entire filename - you may be getting "copy" inserted at the end of the filename before .BMP. I don't get that unless I've used layers, but Photodraw might - not familiar with that program, but you should check.

This is exactly the version I'm using _ I'm not getting why you don't have it in your dropdown. If you're recoloring this way, you should be able to save, since you haven't added a layer, though. Otherwise, try Shift-Ctrl-S, which is the manual Save As. The problem, as I said on the post before, is that when you add a layer (on purpose or by selecting areas to include/exclude) Photo Shop adds that "copy" to the end of your filename, which makes it do nothing to your skin.

Thanks Faylen for the reply......after hearing you were also using V8.0, I went back in and discovered my error..........in the tutorial, it never tells us to click on OK in the Hue/Saturation.......so it closes.......and if you do not close it, all of your other options are greyed out..........:) After I clicked OK on it, I was able to continue to follow your very fine tutorial.

Thanks again

With genetics, it's really the same thing. You can use the clothing tutorials in exactly the same way, just you have more files to edit if you want to make skins or hair inheritable. Eye color is inheritable, dominant if the child is the same sex as the parent with the custom color, and hair recolors can be passed on if you recolor all ages in each style. Facial hair can be recolored the same way, and you can edit the alpha and make changes on just about anything that lies flush on the face.

Wow, im so excited, i can actually make my own stuff now!

Lemme get this straight, now i've mastered the re-colour, i have another query. Say i wanted to .. change the pattern on the bottom of the dress. Woul it work the same way? I.E i delete the pattern around the bottom in Photoshop, and replace it with whatever i want, will it change the design? So i can do stuff like get plain t-shirts in the sims, and put pictures and stuff on them?

Great guide for beginners like myself! One thing, I've got the hang of recolouring, now I'm trying to add text, and pictures to clothes, but the results come out as little black dots everywhere, I've got a feeling I'm not using the right sort of programme for this (I'm still using photoshop btw), do I need to use something different?

Hi! I can't wait to start recolouring my stuff! I just have a couple questions. When you recolour something, do you lose the old colour you started with or do you you end up with say, the original dress and the recoloured one still in the game?
Also, I downloaded the free 30 day trial version of Adobe Photoshop (at http://www.download.com). When the trial period is up can you just go and download it again? (I know you're supposed to buy it but I'm on disability pension)

Faylen
27th Apr 2005, 1:24 AM
Lotta questions! whew! OK, If you go on to the second tutorial, selective recoloring, it'll show you how to recolor selected parts of your outfit. If you want to do something like put a picture or other image on an outfit, you need to have the image you want to copy as a jpeg, then copy and paste it onto your outfit. Depending on the image, you may need to select the image with a lasso tool and apply a mask that reveals the image only. With photoshop, you can do this easily by creating another layer so you can fool around with the image without messing up the clothes. Ask to Leave, your problem is very likely a difference between the size of the image you're trying to paste in and the size of the clothing image. I'd have to see a screenshot to be absolutely sure, but I would wager that you need to transform the scale on your image to fit the clothing. Sims2lover, photoshop is a commercial program that you need to purchase. It's about $600 new on amazon and in retail outlets, but I've seen it for less for older versions on ebay. Misty76, when you "save as" for these outfits, you're creating something brandy-new. You don't overwrite the original, so you have nothing to worry about with any other clothing you have in body shop or the game. I hope this answers everyone. . .

I don't have photoshop so I tried using Picasa2 for the recoloring. Everything goes well untill I try to import it. Do you know what might be wrong?

Faylen
11th May 2005, 9:06 PM
I don't know about Picasa, but the problem I've seen in photoshop that causes this most often is if the files are saved as anything but .bmp, or if the program has created a copy, and the files are saved as copy.bmp. Go back into your projects folder and make sure you don't have any copies, or any files in different formats.

I am having a problem with Bodyshop itself, I think. I can export the clothing and successfully recolor but it shows up as flat black in Bodyshop. I can't find any "refresh preview" button. And If I go ahead and import the item into the game it is still black. The name of the file did not get changed in any way and I can view it in windows and it looks like it is supposed to. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Oh, I do use PaintShopPro V.7 rather than Photoshop but made lots of stuff for TS1 without problems.

Faylen
20th May 2005, 3:09 PM
The refresh preview button is a little circular arrow that appears in the lower left corner of the box to the right of the mannequin. And another problem you might be having is not saving the files as BMP format files.

its just my luck to get it wrong im using photoplus 7
is it ok to use its looks almost the same as photoshop but slightly different look
what happened was when i saved the file after recolouring it i saved (just as the file says basetexturename) but it didnt overwrite it so i tried to delete the old file but still would not show up in bs

camjamlar
28th May 2005, 12:51 AM
i had another try at this and this is what happened the modified colour file overwritten the original file this time like you mentioned to do
but when i refreshed my bs this time instead of the (cutom content could not be loaded) it actually looked as though it did load this time but the colour hasnt changed
what the hell is going on lol
its so frustrating when i fail at something as simple as this

Faylen
29th May 2005, 1:03 AM
OK, you need to "Save As", not Save. Save As will overwrite the original file. Save will save it as something new. You will then need to make sure that the file name and format are correct. Your paint program is going to want to save it as some other format than bitmap, so you need to select "BMP" from the list that will pop down, and >then< make sure the filename is identical to the one you're overwriting.

Thank you very much feylen
I DID IT
I'm so Proud of myself
Instead of ("save and the save as") what you mentioned to do,
I found out the reason, why it would not work,
I'ts because, When i tried to save as, In the drop down menu, ("save as file type") It would not replace, Because there was not a ("bmp") option, There was Either ("save as a photoplus file type or all files"),
(((BUT))
When i clicked on the file option and clicked ("save original as")
And then the ("save file type") came up and then, I saw the (BMP) and (j.peg) etc
Then it replaced the old file
And i refreshed (BodyShop) Then it showed up
So all the Messing around was all because of my stupid photo/paint program

So im going to go off and, Try it again to explore.
I have been recolouring objects for a while now and, Will have my website up soon,
Just need to get the clothes done before i put it on the web
and also learning to change meshes
that will be fun wont it???

Thanks Again For Your Help

how do you get photo shop

Faylen
30th May 2005, 8:06 PM
Philippine guy, are you using photoshop or another paint program? Some programs don't have high enough resolution. If you're using Photoshop, save at the highest resolution you can.

missilu, Photoshop is commercial program, you can buy it from a number of places. If it's too much, look for older versions on auction sites, or try some similar programs - you might run into problems like resolution (see above) and maybe have to translate some of the tutorial instrauctions, but it's an option.

I think I have a very stupid question.

After I make the cloth, i want to pack it up to share with the others...

However, the BodyShop will pack the head as well.

How can I just pack the clothes like the others did?

Faylen
4th Jun 2005, 4:26 PM
What I do is compress the file in the Projects folder and upload that. I'll also take the JPEG image I took in Create-a-Sim and put that into the project folder so it's easy to find what I'm looking for. After I've shared it, I delete the project.

Changing the graphics settings in your game might help, you may also have to save at a higher resolution in PhotoShop.

If you didn't have anything in your projects file, then that means you didn't export it from Body Shop. The problem isn't in PS, but BS.

This my sound like a weird question, but when i make or recoulor a dress the out lines go all fuzzy is there any way of stopping that?

Faylen
23rd Jul 2005, 3:01 PM
It may be a matter of your graphics not being set high enough in the game, or your graphics card (although if it's clear in BS and fuzzy in the game, that first is most likely) In the lower left part of your screen in the game is an icon that looks like an ellipsis. Click that, and you can adjust your game graphics higher.

SimPE isn't going to help you recolor. You need an image editing or paint program. I use PhotoShop, but other people use PaintShopPro, or MicroSoft Paint, or a free program like GIMP. Your results will vary depending on the image program you use. If you want to purchase software, but the cost is scary, try checking for used copies of older versions, which will work fine, just won't have all the bells and whistles.

Open is in the File menu, top left. You may need to play around a bit more before you start if you didn't know this already - not to be insulting, but it really is a lot harder to do some things without background knowledge.

I could not find photoshop pro at download.com, all I found is the CS2 version and it has a 30 day free trial. Could you help with a link please?
thanks

Hiya! Thank you for the awesome tutorial! It was very easy for me because I use Adobe for all my Sims 1 creating. I finally decided yesterda to start learning how to create for Sims 2, so I thought I would start with skins. I also made some purple eyes...of course, lol. Anyways, what I want to know is...how do I package just the skin files or the eyes so that I can put them up on my site for download? Like I said, I am very new to this, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, lol.

Here is a couple of screenshots iif ya wanna see what I made, lol. (I hope I did this right)

Hey, thanks for a great guide!
I just started using BodyShop a few days ago and I've managed to do some ok stuff! But I've got a problem. Everything has worked fine in BodyShop and I've clicked on the "Import-to-game-button" after each creation, but the stuff is nowhere to be found in my game! :sadpanda:
Tried copying one of the DBPF Packages from a female undies-project into my Downloads folder in The Sims 2. What happened was that when I was creating a female sim in the game and chose undies she appeared in them, however they were not among the other undies to the right and when I gave her another pair the ones I made disappeared for good. Am I making any sense? :umm: Hope you can help me!

Thanks again for a great tutorial!

You can upload them here, and if they're the kind of thing that works for mts2, they'll get approved. I don't think you can just attach the files in e-mail, though. Only images. Sorry.

What a great tutorial!! I'm new to all this. Is there a simple way to take the texture from one mesh and apply it to a different body mesh? I'd like to have more selections in my custom body meshes without pestering the poor creators.

tiggerypum
18th Nov 2005, 8:16 PM
Well yes, although you should be cautious about using other people's work, and be careful never to distribute it without permission :) But you can also do this with Maxis outfits.

In bodyshop, create a new project and pick the outfit that has the graphic on it that you want. Be sure to give your project a memorable name. Do not import it into your game, hit the x or cancel or whatever you need to.

Hit cancel/x a couple times more, until you can create a new project again. Now pick the body (by SHAPE) that you want to try to put the other design on. Give it another memorable name.

Leave bodyshop running and go back to your desktop.

Now go to the Projects folder, and open the folder for the first outfit you picked, the one with the graphic you want. COPY the bmp files that are there (not the .project file, just the bmps). You should see your texture and an alpha and maybe a bumpmap file.

Now go back up to the projects file and go to the folder that has the 2nd project, the body shape. PASTE the bmp files into that folder.

Go back into bodyshop and hit the refresh arrow. You should see the design on the new mesh. It might or might not line up perfectly. If it does, give it a name and import it into your game. If it doesn't, you'll need to try editing it to make adjustments.

I need assistance, advice, or anything positive!.

After recoloring with Photoshop, I "save as" with the same filename as a bmp using the 32bit resolution. Then I refresh the model in Bodyshop, and everything looks great. (I'm recoloring a tank top.)

So, to create a sim using the new colored top, I go to create a sim in bodyshop. When I select the recolored top, the edges are blurry around the neckline. I'm saving at the highest resolution, but it's still blurry. Have I maybe missed something?

Thanks!
~Cat~

tiggerypum
25th Nov 2005, 7:53 AM
Look at the alpha file for your tank top. Maxis did a shadow thing on the edges of many of their garments, where they put black at the edges of them and then had them faintly show through on the alpha to make a sort of translucent shadow on the skin area of the sim.

What you might see on your alpha is that there is a dark gray ring around the outer edge of the white area that is the tank top. If you take a black paintbrush and carefully paint over the gray area and make the edge there look sharp white to black (antialiasing with a little bit of gray where they meet is fine) you will have a much sharper neckline. Other option is for you to put black on your recolor in the same place they did on the original.

To be honest, I think many times the edge shading the Maxis artists did looks.... smudgy and also extends much further onto the sim than I prefer. I like the shadows on my sims clothing to be a bit more subtle.

:google: is your friend.

Paint Shop Pro is one option, which has a free trial, and I see prices that range from $99 down to about $50. A version that's one version back will probably do you just fine. They have a free trial, but if you think you will never buy it's not necessarily wise to get the trial, you'll just get the hang of using it and need to stop.

Photoshop also works, and again, you might be able to find an older version at a discount, but its original price is higher.

Gimp http://www.gimp.org/
is FREE. You will want to use some of the tutorials to learn your way around the interface. In theory it can do everything photoshop/paint shop pro can.

It seems easy enough to follow, and it should be fine in PSP9 too, from what I've seen, as Photoshop was only used for adjusting the hue. I'll be experimenting a lot with this later on today, but I have to go to school for a maths exam soon.. :(

This is a wonderful tutorial but I have come across a problem. After I followed all the steps, I refresh my custom content in BodyShop to see the final result. Well, it turns out looking the way I designed it. But after I save it/load it in the game, I go to design a sim in BodyShop using my new custom stuff and it is completely blurry. It is also completely blurry in-game (which I have changed the graphics at their highest in hopes this would cure the problem - but it did not.)

Now I was reading somewhere that the Sims 2, for a better visual of the game, requires that you have a really nice video card that usually costs alot. Mine that I have at the moment is NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 - Version 6.14.0010.8194 with 32MB total memory. Do you suppose this might be the problem? I'm rather certain I followed all of your steps correctly and I know - and have checked many times - that the file did not save as "copy" or any other name.

Thank you for your help.

A.

tiggerypum
7th Dec 2005, 4:09 AM
I will assume your base bmp is sharp. And it looks fine in bodyshop. So yes, the problem is likely your video card, and there are other spots on site to ask about that and what you might need. 32 mb of memory sounds really low. Make sure that whatever card you do get is supported, and do not get the bottom line one - if you hunt for some online sales you can probably get something in the vacinity of $100 that will work well. Someplace on site there's a thread specifically about graphics cards...

here are my questions:
1. How can I recolor clothing without replacing the originals? (I downloaded the originals for their beauty)
2. Can I recolor clothing in SimPE? rather than BS???
3. and if I can will SimPE replace the original as well?

Thanks for any reply!

This is very odd. You are using bodyshop to make your new outfits? When you hit the button to import to your game (have you seen your outfits in game, or only in your bodyshop 'projects' area?) it will make a new file and should not replace any originals. Yes, you are overwriting graphics in your projects folder, but those are copies.

I am not sure of the simpe details, how you would change the identifier for your outfit so that it doesn't overwrite your originals. I've never heard of bodyshop overwriting originals.

I have several graphic/image editing programs, including most of those mentioned in this forum (excluding PhotoShop). For those who, like me, can't afford to purchase a good program, I definitely recommend downloading PhotoPlus and/or The GIMP. They both have the Layers feature.

The biggest problem I've encountered is that there doesn't seem to be a "free" program that offers all of the features that I'd like. My preference would be to own Paint Shop Pro and/or PhotoShop, but that's just not feasible at this time. I didn't want to download the trial versions, because I knew I'd want to own them. But....I did break down and get the Paint Shop Pro 9 trial version. When the trial period is over, I will simply go back to doing what I did before: jumping back and forth between the various programs.

Anyway, what I recommend to those in my situation....especially for the purposes of this tutorial....is to download PhotoPlus (http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/) and The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/).

Faylen: As for the problems people are having with the "Saving As" part of the tutorial....wouldn't it be easier to just click "Save"? Then you won't have to worry about what format it's being saved as. It'll just overwrite whatever formatting was present in the original file. Correct?

I'm not sure how often I'll check for updates here, but I can TRY to help answer the questions regarding The GIMP and PhotoPlus.

One more thing....

For those who have said they can't open Body Shop, or when they try to import/export and it seems to lock up: Be patient! :D When I first tried opening Body Shop, it appeared that nothing was happening. Same thing happened when I finally had it open and tried importing/exporting textures and stuff. I finally realized that it just sometimes takes a while for things to happen. I can't tell you how long to wait because each person's system is different. But I really do think that you should just give it time. I usually just walk away from my computer while it's loading, exporting or importing. That way, I'm not waiting for the "watched pot" to "boil". :D

Nope. If you click "Save", you get a copy, not a replacement. That's one of the big problems that people have over and over when they recolor. When they say they saved the file, but Body Shop didn't change, it's usually because they didn't "save as" - which >does< overwrite the original file.

Interesting. That must be PhotoShop thing. I haven't used that program in a couple of years. I haven't had any problems using Paint Shop Pro 9 as far as just using 'Save'.

Definitely something to keep in mind when/if I'm going to purchase either PS or PSP. Thanks!

I have a question. I've read all the tutorials, both yours and Maxis' (yours are better btw), but I'm still having troubles.

Everything goes great until I get back into Body Shop. When I refresh the image it looks great but when I actually upload it into the game it gets all pixely and I loose all the detail. I can upload stuff from others that have amazing detail, down to the threads in the clothing.

I have Photoshop CS and Sims 2, but no expansion packs. I'm not messing with the mesh or anything, I'm just trying to recolor stuff. I've tried everything. Hitting Save As, instead of Save, working in Paint instead of Photoshop, and it looks fine while I'm refreshing it in the window, but as soon as I hit Upload to game it goes all pixely. Help please!

It's more likely your game graphics. Make sure you set them high and see what happens. Also, you may need to upgrade your video driver. If neither of these works, I'm sad to say that you might need to spring for a new video card.

:google: is your friend. Adobe Photoshop is made by - ADOBE, and is a program you would have to buy. It's what some of us own, and what Faylen happens to use, thus the tutorial uses it.

That said, when you look at a full price copy - you'll probably faint. BUT you can use photoshop 5 on up (so you might be able to find an old/used copy) and it should be just fine (I cannot speak for versions before 5)

Alternatively, there is Paintshop Pro, aka PSP. That is also a pay-for program, runs about $100 I believe. In the end, PSP or an older photoshop might be a good investment.

There is also The Gimp - which is FREE.
http://www.gimp.org/windows/

No matter which program you use, you will need to learn *how* to use it. Once you know how, you should be able to find similar commands in any of the three, even if you don't have photoshop. There are generic online tutorials that will teach you how to resize graphics and how to use layers and effects. Go do the tutorials, even if what they have you 'make' is of little interest, these are all complex editing programs that can do far more than generic paint can. As such, it takes a bit more to learn how to use them.

I've had the same problems as many of the others...the result comes up blurred even though the non-edited dresses are normal (so it's not the graphic)
I've also saved it in a high res on Photoshop (the file looks good) but when I upload it, it still look like sh*t...:(
I tried to check what the problem was by making a new project of the recolored dress.
Then I saw that the image had shrunk about 90%.
Why?
I followed your GREAT tutorial to the word but it still ends up like this...

(Green dress is original dress, blue dress is recolored and the tiny thing is the result after uploading it...)

File names are the original ones, except the added _2 and _3

Faylen

Then you need to change the Image Size. It's in the Image menu, and it's exporting as 512x512 instead of 1024x1024 pixels.

I'm having a bit of a problem here. I keep having the same thing happen when I save. Here's how it goes:

This (http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=ncms80) is before I started coloring.
This (http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=ncmsgn) is after coloring, and pressing refresh.
The problem comes here (http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=ncmslh) when I try make a sim wear the clothes.

tiggerypum
25th Feb 2006, 5:06 PM
you need to remember to do that last step - after you have done the refresh thing and see your new clothing on the model - you need to hit a button which will automatically build the final version and put it in your game for you (into your Saved Sims folder)

Faylen
27th Feb 2006, 2:13 PM
OK, if you're having a specific problem, you need to give me more than "same problem as. . ." because this is a very big, very long-running thread. Let me see if I can hit some bases all over again.

Body Shop comes with your game. You go to "My Documents" from your start menu. Double click "EA Games". Double click "The Sims 2". Double click "CS Bin" and you will see "Body Shop.exe". This will open and install Body Shop for you. If you want, you can then set up a shortcut by right clicking on the Body Shop icon and selecting "Create Shortcut". That way it'll be on your desktop and you don't need to search around for it again.

Photo Shop is a very powerful commercial image editing program made by Adobe. You can buy the latest version for just under $700. You can buy an older version on various auction sites, and it will still work. Gimp, a free program, is available at GIMP.org, and it handles layers. Other paint programs require more artistic skill on your part because they work directly on the image, and don't create additional layers.

With photoshop, you can check your Image Size on your texture.bmp file (The one you've edited) and make sure it's 1024x1024 pixels. If it has somehow changed to 512x512, just replace it with the correct numbers and Save As. This should fix the pixelization problem that you see in Body Shop on the mannequin. If things look fine in Body Shop but blurry in the game, the things to try are setting the game graphics higher. If this does not work, then download a newer video driver for your video card. If this does not work, you most likely need a better video card.

Make sure you follow all the instructions in the tutorial. If you select "Save" instead of "Save As" in PhotoShop, a copy file will be created, and the original texture.bmp will still be there, unchanged. When you're done, you need to give your project a name and select "Export to Game" from Body Shop. This puts the file in Saved Sims. You may remove your project from your "Projects" folder, either while you're in Body Shop, or directly from the Projects folder, unless you want to save it as a template for something else right away.

As for this last one about the military uniforms - check out Morague's tutorial on how to unlock career clothes, or look for the career outfits she already unlocked and put in the downloads section here.

I have a problem creating custom content in bodyshop. The recolours look fine when I try them on the mannequin in bodyshop just before I upload it, but when I upload it the clothes become blurry...(I'm using PaintShopPro but I don't think that's the problem). The same thing happens when I edit eyebrows... when i upload it to bodyshop the face becomes blurry. This problem about the clothes and other content becoming blurry started happening when using the bodyshop from nightlife, the previous bodyshops in the original and uni didn't do this because i recoloured eyes and hair and makeup and they came out fine.

This is when I started having problems too. I did plenty of hair and eye recolors prior to installing nightlife, but now it just looks terrible. The things I did before look fine. I know it's not my video card, because this is only with things I do myself. Other recolors that I download look just awesome, the detail is superb. It's the same computer it was in January when I installed Nightlife, and nothing has changed.

Now, that said, after reading through (couple of hours of reading problems, reading solutions) and seeing that my problem was not unique (to my relief, otherwise I probably would not have found any answers) I started testing the various theories. Note: I use Paintshop Pro Seven, and have for some years so I know my way around the program fairly well. What I learned may be helpful, at least to the people who actually read the answers before asking the same questions over and over... sorry to you moderators for that.

First: I increased the resolution... then it occurred to me that a 256x256 bitmap is still going to be a 256x256 bitmap... increasing the pixels per inch won't change that.. it will just make the bitmap smaller in inches, not pixels. Ok.. so scratch that idea...

Second, I read where a user noticed that her bitmaps were decreasing in size every time they were exported. She thought about 90%... So I tried increasing the size of the bitmaps... since they were 256x256, I decided that 3 times as big might give a better resolution. sharpened my images, increased the sizes sharpened again... saved... NO DICE... when I imported, I got a baldy.. not Daniel's custom hair I had been working on. Bah... scratch that idea, read on...

Third, I found a reference that said the bitmaps should be 1024X1024... and a theory was put out that for some reason they might be getting saved as 512x512... well in my case they are being exported at 256x256... and I hadn't saved my last batch in an even numbered multiple of 256... should have realised that would matter... so I took my images (my battered resized sharpened, belittled, embiggened poor poor images now.) and increased thier sizes all the way to 1024x1024... saved em... imported them.. and then looked at Dan's head with his new hair... Well.. it's better now. switched to the other image still sitting there.. oh yes, it's much better than that.

So now, yes, I have to redo the entire hair, becuase I stupidly closed my images every time I resized them, instead of leaving them open so I could just undo the damage... but it's cool..

So here's what you do.. when you export FIRST THING... change all the images alphas and bitmaps to 1024x1024, then do your editing.

My question is this.. is there some setting or something that will tell bodyshop to STOP downsizing the images? Why would it do that? It just ruins the recolor, and I like doing recolors.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a problem only for some people, and I have no idea what might be causing it. It's never happened to me, but it's happened to other people using hardware and/or software similar to mine, and I'm not any kind of a technically ept person, so I can't figure it out for you. Maybe someone out there who's more familiar with program and hardware compatibility issues will be able to tell what's going on. In the meantime, if you know you have a problem, forewarned is forearmed. It does seem that each time someone who has this glitch gets a new ep, the image halves itself again, though.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a problem only for some people, and I have no idea what might be causing it. ... It does seem that each time someone who has this glitch gets a new ep, the image halves itself again, though.

Hmm... Welp... I went and checked through the registry to see if maybe there was something there to indicate. But no dice there. There has to be a reason for it. Maybe I'll go over to the exchange and see if I can find any answers... but the maxis site is so poorly navigable...

I used to wonder why I see sooooo many modders saying things like "DO NOT upload my stuff to the exchange" because I figured sharing is sharing if it's because they want it to stay free (whcih I agree with btw)... but given the way that place is organized.... maybe I do understand better than I think. But if I learn anything, I'll check back and update my solutions.

In the meantime, I was able to also redo a skintone that I was working on, and now it's beautiful. I don't understand why having one bitmap at low res would cause all the others including the clothing and hair and everything to go all blurry, which is what was happening with the skintone. With the hair recolor is was just the hair that was blurry.

I bought photoshop Version CS2 (latest version to date) off eBay for roughly £8. But if you don't want to buy it off eBay for a cheap price, the RRP is about £140 in England so it's probably worth it to buy it off eBay. It's surprising how many people don't want their Photoshop. :baloons:

On the first page of this thread there were some alternatives to Paintshop (as Paintshop is a program you need to purchase, but it also has a free trial download located somewhere at www.adobe.com probably)
But fear not there was a 'free' program available to download at http://gimp.org.

You can click on the images for a full-sized version

1) Here’s your opening screen after you select “Create Parts.” “Start New Project” gests you going on your clothes.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor01-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor01.png)

2) This is the next thing you will see – your mannequin, which can be changed to any of the sexes, ages, or body types in the game by clicking on the buttons circled in blue.

Across the top you will see the clothing categories. Clicking on one of these will bring up thumbnails of all the available clothes in that category for that age and sex of sim. I’m picking “Everyday” here.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor02-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor02.png)

3) This is the screen you will see in Bodyshop after you click on “Start New Project.” Click on “Create Clothing.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor03-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor03.png)

4) Find the outfit you want to recolor in the thumbnails and click on it. It will appear on the mannequin. Click on “Export Selected Textures” to get it into Photoshop.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor04-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor04.png)

5) Before you can do anything with it in Photoshop, though, it needs to have a name! Pick something that will remind you of what it is, no spaces or punctuation marks. I usually use something similar to the existing texture filenames, like “af” for adult female or “tm” for teen male, then the clothing type – dress, jeans, etc. It’s up to you what works best for you.

6) I’ve decided to call this one “recolordress.” Brilliant. Once the project has been named, you click on “Accept Project Name” and you’re ready to start making changes. You’ll see the following screen in Bodyshop next:

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor06-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor06.png)

7) Leave this open, but don’t do anything yet. You’ll come back to this screen to see how your clothing is looking, and nothing is set in stone until you import the saved file into your game – and even then, you can still go back and tweak it if you need to. On to Photoshop. Start it up...

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor07-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor07.png)

8) Here’s your first Photoshop Screen. Select “Open” from the File menu.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor08-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor08.png)

9) You’ll have to go through a few screens to get to where you want, so at the risk of dumbing this down too much, we’ll go step by step. You’re going to open “My Documents.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor09-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor09.png)

10) Next Open “EA Games.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor10-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor10.png)

11) Now... open “The Sims 2.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor11-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor11.png)

12) In “The Sims 2” you’ll see “Projects”. Open this next...

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor12-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor12.png)

13) And here’s our “recolordress” folder. Open it up and you’ll see...

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor13-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor13.png)

14) These are the files in our “recolordress” folder. Select the texture, not the alpha. You’ll see the thumbnail below with what it looks like.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor14-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor14.png)

15) Your texture image will show up like this. You’ll see I’ve selected Image, then gone down to Adjustments, then right and down to Hue/Saturation and that’s where you’ll want to click.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor15-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor15.png)

16) Here’s your Hue/Saturation window. Check Colorize. I didn’t do anything to get this color. Don’t panic. This hasn’t even been applied, much less saved. You can move the sliders around until you get something you like.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor16-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor16.png)

17) See? This is kind of a fun color. Keep in mind that this will affect the entire file. A simple recolor like this will alter the color of the entire outfit, because nothing has been deselected. That’s for another tutorial.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor17-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor17.png)

18) Now that we’ve got the color we want, we need to “Save As.” Important because...

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor18-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor18.png)

19) We’re going to overwrite the existing texture file. Make sure whenever you play around with this that the file type is BMP, and the filename doesn’t say “copy” in it, or you won’t get it to stick. Not a problem with a recolor, but something to keep in mind for later.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor19-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor19.png)

20) Here’s what you see next. Click OK.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor20-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor20.png)

21) Again, click OK.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor21-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor21.png)

22) No when we go back to Bodyshop and click on “Refresh preview Sim”, you’ll see the recolored version of the outfit. If you don’t like it, go back to Photoshop and tweak it some more, the same way you recolored it in the first place. Each time you “save as” and replace the texture file, you’ll be able to refresh and see how it looks in Bodyshop.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor22-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor1/recolor22.png)

23) This is your final step. Name your creation (the name will appear when you mouse over it in Create-A-Sim) and Import to the game. It will show up as an Everyday outfit in CAS. It’s also still in projects in Bodyshop unless you choose to deleted it. (“Load Saved Project”, select “recolordress” or whatever you’ve named the file, click on the trashcan icon in the lower right.) It’s also still in Project in My Documents/EA Game/The Sims 2 unless you choose to delete it. Deleting it from either of these will not delete it from the game.

Again, the blurring issue is addressed in the Skinning FAQs thread in the main skinning forum, with a link to the fix.

Terminal, take a look at the How to add Shadows and Highlights tutorial. It's the same concept, you just need to work at it and get your artistic skills up. Some people use dodge and burn, but that doesn't work for all textures. At least, not the way I like it. ;)

OK...here we go...you've probably already answered this question 50 million times but my brain is too tired to filter through this all. I'm sorry :(.

I'm using Photo Shop 5, and I too cannot see anything when I refresh in BodyShop...and there is no "copy" in the file name that I can see, nor is it the "alpha" version. Perhaps the version of Photo Shop I have is too old? I couldn't find the stuff to download for free so I had to get this one from my dad.

Anyhow the tutorials are a very good idea! I'm exciting about figuring this out so I can contribute to a site I've gotten so much from! :D
