Kung Fury (not a real film but an awesome foolish movie xD): 100/10

I laughed so much. It's so dumb and weird but perfect for a quick watch if something is installing!

I saw Tomorrowland a couple weeks ago and forgot to post about it here!
The movie was ok... I didn't have high expectations to be honest. It revolved around some of the themes of Interstellar, those ideas that make you want to talk about it even when the movie is over, and probably this thing, along with the Disney references throughout the movie made it ok. Otherwise, the plot is really flowed and leaves you wanting for more info.

This week Jurassic World is coming out and I can't wait to see it, even though I kind of already know it's going to be a bummer. As much as I don't dislike Chris Pratt, he is NOT the kind of actor who should take a lead role in a movie like this. The first JP was sooooo much more than an action movie. It was about serious matters, had some killer acting and most importantly 99% of the jokes were delightfully intelligent. I am afraid that JW is going to be another action movie trailed by some "charismatic" semi-comedian. Kind of like any Transformers/Marvel movie which has come out in the past 10 years.

Re: Tomorrowland - I have a pretty good radar for films I'm not going to like and stay away accordingly. But a film critic who I used to respect gave it a good review. So I won't be listening to him anymore.

Jurassic World: 8/10

This movie was pretty much exactly what I went into the theatre expecting, and I'm perfectly happy with that! Like Gabrymato suggested, it's nowhere near as good as the first one, but I would say it's better than either of the earlier sequels! This movie managed to be exactly what it should be- people on a tropical island running away from impressive looking CGI carnivorous dinosaurs, with various shots of peacefully grazing herbivorous dinosaurs mixed in, to keep you from getting to set on the idea that all dinosaurs are evil and want to kill you. I wasn't wild about the appearance of the new alpha predator dinosaur that they invented for this movie, and I thought the hybridized pterosaurs looked stupid, but all the other dinos were very well created, and lots of fun to watch! Naturally, the only times the movie kind of dragged was when they put in stories that were centered around the business end of running a dinosaur-centered business, just like in all the other films in this series. Overall though, definitely a fun flick, and a worthy way to spend an afternoon!

I'd give it a 0 out of 10. Preferably minus points, but I'm being nice, and I actually watched the first one. Sort of, anyway. Seriously, give that girl a script, lock her in a closet, and don't make her come out before she knows what to say and don't do dumb stares every five minutes --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghPsLcuLHHU (love the bonus round!)

Last I saw was Avengers: Age of Ultron. It was fun, but maybe not as fun as the previous one. I think these movies are getting too predictable for me. When I get those 'waaait for it!' moments every five to ten minutes on the first viewing, it's getting a bit bad. I'd give it 6.5/10, for trying.

Mordecai and Rigby 15th Jun 2015 1:31 AM

We went to a cabin and spent most of the trip watching movies. I can't remember all of them, but the best was probably Ghostbusters 2. I guess...8.9/10. I'm not really sure what to rate it, since it was really good through most of it but that ending was just weird. Like why was Lady Liberty there? Just didn't make much sense. But you can't really blame them since for a second there you had no clue how it was going to end.

Gabrymato 15th Jun 2015 8:01 AM

Jurassic World, guys!
I think that, among the sequels, this is definitely the ONLY one that can claim to be Jurassic Park's successor. Even though it's obviously not as good.
It misses all the animatronic awesomeness of JP (replaced by CGI which thank god is very present but not really excessive like in a Transformers movie). It doesn't have many talking and explaining parts like JP, it's mostly an action movie. But it has a few great points, like many references to the original Park, the true transposition of Hammond's dreamland in today's world (Hammond pictured an outdoor-museum kind of place, but Jurassic World, in 2015, is a huge resort of promenades full of souvenir shops, Starbucks, and margarita bars).
Too much action, too little nerd talking. But oh so good.

8/10

lindali365 19th Jun 2015 7:56 AM

Just saw Jurassic World tonight in 3D. Years after Jurassic Park was released, I was thrilled to see that the Jurassic 'light' has not gone out (wasn't feeling the luv for #3). Loved the nods given to the original in this new film. The only thing I can't forgive is 'the shoes;' why didn't someone step in and say or do something about those shoes?

I'm torn between 8/10 and 9/10, so it's 8.5/10.

Zarathustra 26th Jun 2015 6:40 AM

"Three Days of the Condor" - 7/10
Definitely an older, slower-paced movie, but still a fun clandestine-service thriller! I can also see a lot of similarities between this and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is kind of fun... I enjoy when new movies take their cues from old successful films (plus if you watch both of these films, you'll get to see Robert Redford as both the good guy and the bad guy in what's basically the same story!

VerDeTerre 1st Jul 2015 5:07 PM

Inside Out - 7.5/10 Cute film, great idea. I thought for certain that it would be hard for the younger set to appreciate, but the kiddos behind me were giggling at every gag. Loved the idea and the way they executed it. As a parent, I got all weepy at the scenes involving remembering childhood (because it's so fleeting!) and loved how the movie resolved. The score is lower because it didn't "wow" me as much as some other animated films that I've enjoyed in the past, but I was still happy to have seen it in the theater. The dedication at the end was perfect, "Dedicated to our children: don't grow up. Ever".

Lava 10/10 - The Pixar short that played before Inside Out. Beautifully imaginative and executed! This little short, which tells a mini love story about volcanoes had a Hawaiian style song that is reverberating in my head two days later. Catchy!

Housebound 8/10. Loved it, but it took a while to get into. Still, not enough for me to turn off the TV, which is what I'm prone to do with other movies. I really liked this one.

Noa1500 10th Aug 2015 11:50 PM

Inside Out- Meh. 6/10? It was ok, not disappointing, a sweet family story. But I got viciously angry at Sadness. After the movie I told my friend that I wanted to stab Sadness with a fork in the eye. I do not have violent tendencies. I am not a violent person...I think *eyes shift around crazily*. Surprisingly my friend said "I feel you", thus showing that my thoughts against Sadness (likely to have an adverse effect on her) were in fact acceptable.

Interstellar...Let's say, 8/10 ? Very good movie but a little bit boring in the beginning and sometimes difficult to understand.

That Man From U.N.C.L.E- 9/10

The Terminator :cylon: 9/10 (Yeah yeah yeah, I'm really behind the times, I know! I haven't seen just about any of the classic 1980s sci fi out there!)

With as old a movie as this is, I was expecting it to be a lot slower paced and a lot more disappointing in the visual effects department than it was! It held up surprisingly well (with the exception of a few scenes that were almost painfully '80s), and it was definitely time well spent! Plus, a movie like this that established so many tropes and quotes and whatnot is always fun to watch- it's interesting to see where those ideas got their start!

Shaun the Sheep Two Scores: Story/animation/execution/direction/etc... 8/10 / Music 3/10

Very cute movie, well done in all regards but the music. The music was not to my taste at all and was barely tolerable. A score would have been preferable. Even with that, it was an enjoyable film.

Tangerine - 2015 - Comedy/Drama - 7/10

I enjoyed it even though it's sad. The action takes place on Christmas Eve day and night. Alexandra wants people to come see her performance. Sin-Dee Rella is very angry at her pimp and lover, Chester. Cabdriver Razmik has adventures in his cab and leads a double life. I guess it's not for everybody.
(I saw it at Real Art Ways in Hartford. The audience was a sea of white-haired people. Hartford must have the coolest elders in the US.)

Zarathustra 28th Aug 2015 7:37 AM

The LEGO Movie - 10/10

OK, I'll start right off with the obvious- LEGOs have been, are, and will always continue to be AWESOME (Everything is awesome... ) and a movie that's made with them, especially a full-blown big-box action movie can't help being awesome too! Plus the producers CLEARLY knew that they were going to have to make a movie that LEGO fans of ALL ages would like, since kids for decades have grown up playing with these little plastic bricks, and plenty of those kids are now adults who'd want to see the movie too... and those producers delivered in spades! From the 1980's space callbacks to the shout-outs to more modern franchises like Terminator and The Dark Knight, I'm not sure there was even one line in the whole movie that wasn't awesome! (Everything is awesome... everything is cool when you're part of a team! Everything is Awesome!)

Oh yeah, and... Spaceship SPACESHIP SPACESHIP!!!! :lovestruc

Meru - 2015 - Documentary - 9/10
I saw the preview for this when I went to see Tangerine - 3 climbers attempt the Shark's Fin route on Meru Peak in the Gharwhal Himalayas in India . Normally I wouldn't be interested in this, but the cinematography looked amazing (2 of them filmed the ascents), so I wanted to see it on a big screen. (because at home I only have small screens plus the popcorn there is good).
So it's a really good film about Himalayan big wall climbing and all that that entails and also about the three men and their lives. In the end I had a better understanding of why people do crazy stuff like this.

If I stay-drama-7-10
I found the lead character to be really interesting that someone intelligent and very talented could have her life change because of a boy who didn't really treat her with the respect that she deserved but never really stood up for herself.A tear jerkier that makes you think and has a complex lead character that left me hoping that she would stay!
Lucy-action-6-10
I really loved Scarlett Johansson in this film.It was not something I was expecting and went off into a place that really surprised me. The one thing I disliked and lowered the rating for me was it did lack purpose and left me wondering exactly what was the moral of this story?

8/10. I could actually understand MC's thought process, even though he was probably psychotic. Which is a little worrying because I'm fairly certain that I'm sane. So I'm going to assume its good movie making skills instead

RV (2006) - DVD, Comedy
3.5/10
Another comedy built around the one-liner humor of Robin Williams, and not one of the better ones.
Best line: After pulling the RV out of the lake, he explains to the cop, "She likes to be rode hard and left wet".

The Omega Man (1971) - VHS, Sci-Fi
8/10
The best movie version of Richard Matheson's I Am Legend novel (I think it's better than the novel). I love post-apocalypse stories and this is one of the best movie renditions of the genre. Charlton Heston plays Colonel Robert Neville, a US Army doctor who is the last survivor on earth, except for the diseased, homicidal maniacs he has to battle at night. Some typical 1970s Hollywood political correctness, but it's bearable.

We watched "The Departed" (again) tonight while we ate dinner. I've seen that movie so many times I've lost track of how many times exactly. I'll give it a 10/10 until I have all the best lines memorized, then it'll be 9/10 because of predictability. Love it.

Directed by Martin Scorsese. Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga. Killer Soundtracks.

Dr. Zhivago - 9/10 Another one of those movies I should have seen a long time ago, but didn't (well, not true, technically- I saw it when I was like 6... but have you ever met a 6-year old who'd actually appreciate a movie like that?) I was definitely impressed. I can see why it's such an enduring work, even if it does get a touch predictable through... well, most of it at this point. I knocked a point off because the complete lack of Russian (and the plethora of British) accents was annoying.

I agree with the critics that the plot is...unlikely, to say the least. In a country as vast as Russia, we are led to believe that these several people meet up repeatedly over a time span of several decades, by chance and usually under the most trying of circumstances. It's just not believable or in any way realistic.
This movie, like the novel it is based on, was promoted by political interests who wanted to embarrass the USSR, simple as that.
It has some epic scenes and the music is beautiful, but overall it's overrated.
No more than 5/10 from me.

Sleepy Hollow - Old - Horror/Comedy/Mystery/Historical/Tim Burton

7/10

I'm actually ashamed to say how much I enjoyed watching it when for the past fifteen(+) years Burton's Depp-featuring Dark 'n' Quirky TM stuff has been so overplayed, and this was likely the film that kicked that streak off. But it was really fun.

Zarathustra 2nd Oct 2015 8:03 AM

The Martian - 9/10

While, like most book-to-movie adaptations, the book was better (I loved that book), this movie was still definitely well worth the time and money I spent on it! My only real critiques are that it didn't explain the science behind certain elements well enough (although, knowing the basics of that science myself, I really can't think of a good way to explain that on film without it sounding like a PBS documentary...), and that they left out a few parts of the book that were particularly entertaining, in my opinion. Still lots of fun though, and I really really hope it gets more people excited by the prospect of humanity visiting the Red Planet in the near future!

(oh, and there was plenty of disco! )

PANDAQUEEN 2nd Oct 2015 4:54 PM

Toys (1992)
An underrated gem in Robin Williams' career, the story centers around the adult children of the late Kenneth Zevo of Zevo Toys, Leslie (Robin Williams) and Alsatia (Joan Cusack) and the fact their uncle decides to do a complete overhaul and add war toys, which Kenneth was against. But to restore order, their militaristic cousin (LL Cool J) sides with Leslie and Alsatia to restore the glory that was Zevo Toys.

My favorite gag is the Barrel of Laughs toy Kenneth was buried with. They return to the monument to still hear it playing and Leslie quips "Those are some good batteries"

This underrated gem got its ranking because it was competing against much more successful films.

Still, if you wanted to see Robin Williams work with the subject matter (including a rousing speech he gives to the remaining Zevo toys before he and Alsatia let them loose again their uncle's playthings of mass destruction) This is a great movie and the aesthetics are just full of whimsy.

Funny quips, story was a dramedy, fun to watch if you enjoy Robin Williams' rapid fire improv.

PS. During Mork and Mindy's run, Robin Williams' part of the script was left blank so he could improvise

Elsa & Fred - a love story about two elderly people 7.5/10 Starring Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer. Cute story with a few adorable, touching moments sprinkled within. Perhaps the MacLaine character was a little too predictably quirky, but still an enjoyable character.

pirate_wolf_12 7th Oct 2015 1:49 PM

Trick 'R Treat (2007).

Not really that scary, but I'd say it deserves to be on every movie list for a Halloween night. Nice mix of dark comedy, has a great creepy atmosphere, and even a little side story that gets to you. It involves five different stories taking place on Halloween night which are interwoven, a trope I've not always been a big fan of but found the movie did well.

Noa1500 10th Oct 2015 11:59 PM

Boy Wonder (2010)
7/10 I didn't intend to watch this movie, I was going to watch something else, but the track pad was being silly. There violence in it, but its not too bad, some parts are dull (pretty sure its intentional). But that ending though, like I knew it'd happen, but I didn't think it'd actually happen. Main character lives up to the name "boy wonder".

Nice soundtrack too

VerDeTerre 12th Oct 2015 9:44 AM

The Story of Luke 6.5/10 was interesting, enough to keep me watching it despite some inconsistencies. The story is about a young man with autism who had been living with his grandparents and his grandmother dies. He and his grandfather are taken into the home of a cousin who has a wife who doesn't want the burden of caring for him and two teens who, at first, talk about him in his presence and refer to him as "retarded". Luke has goals - - to get out on his own and "get his shit together". He is well played, even if he doesn't resemble anyone I've met with autism so far. How Luke approaches his goals and is aided by others and how he slowly changes the attitudes of those around him is compelling and hopeful. Overall, I liked it.

Do you read the writeups at IMDb? It says there were quite a number of odd accidents that occurred during the making of this movie. It also says the actor who played the character that gets decapitated never watched the scene.
It's been many years since I watched it, so I wouldn't want to to rate it right now. It's possible I remember it being better than it actually was.

Opportunity Knocks (1990)
Dana Carvey plays a con man named Eddie Farrell who works his way to the top of a corporation and later is given advice to not target the boss, but the boss's daughter, a doctor at a clinic, into getting sensitive information about him through her. So he romances the daughter and by the time he is in love to the point of wanting to marry her, he gets tied in his previous affair because his partner, Louie, was getting a beating and the boss wanted his money.

I forgot how it followed up, but the end is a modestly pleasing twist.

For you SNL fans, he reprises his George Bush Sr. role in an attempt to get two employees playing hooky. Another talent displayed by Mr. Carvey, is singing as he sings at a karaoke bar.

The movie displays his talents of vocal nature at its most appropriate moments in the film's progress, and although the reception was mild for this film, he will surprise first timers to this film, but like many movies I watch, it's usually the underrated or mildly-received that hold a spot in my heart.

Crimson Peak - Horror - 2015 - 7/10

The story is batshit crazy, but if you like beautifully creepy visuals you might enjoy this.
I'm not opposed to gore in films, but some of the gore here was beyond gratuitous and hurt the film imo.
The actors were excellent and I think they're what kept this from going completely off the rails.
Mia Wasikowska's dresses are gorgeous.

They get people excited, have fun call-backs to the original trilogy, introduce new unknowns, but still give away NOTHING of the plot! Trailers recently have gotten far too spoiler-happy!

Chef (2014) - 9/10

I've been a big fan of Jon Favreau's work ever since the first time I watched Zathura. That movie just made me so excited with how cleverly it managed to avoid ever feeling dull or repetitive despite the restrictions the story created. A full length movie with a cast of literally 6 people, that all takes place in one house. And yet you never feel constrained by it. You never feel bored of the setting or the characters. You're not even aware of it until the credits start rolling and you see the hilariously short cast list.

In some ways this movie does a similar trick. You do spend a lot of time with a small portion of the cast in a small space. But a much bigger similarity between the two movies is how much life they have in them. Chef just oozes energy and passion and it isn't afraid to care about things. And that kind of spirit is exactly what I love about Jon Favreau's movies. They have heart. And energy. And they make you feel good. You feel good when you're watching them, and you feel good afterwards. Or at least, I do.

So yeah, thanks Netflix for sending this one my way. It was exactly what I needed tonight.

Gravity: 4/10

A couple of good parts, but mostly way overdone. Predictable, and the main character was nnoying as hell.

EvilMcNastySim2015 7th Nov 2015 9:20 AM

Cleopatra(1963).

I give it a 6.5 out of 10, it's not a complete disaster, but it's not that good either and you can tell the script was having to be thrown together on the day by the director at some points in the movie and it should have felt a lot more epic considering that adjusted for inflation it is one of the most costly movies ever made. Oddly enough I think Liz Taylor and Rex Harison had more onscreen chemistry then she and Richard Burton did, and yet she and Harison were not getting along behind the scenes, talk about weird. The second half of the movie is also a huge drag with lots of over the top yelling and oddly for a movie that is as long as this one is it feels like there are scenes missing and characters actions and motivations are left unclear. it's like the movie expects you to know the history of these events to follow the story but then at times it shows things that never happened in the real history. Still it is one of the best looking movies I have ever seen and the score is great, so it is not a total loss, it is just really hard to get through in one sitting and I am someone who has no problem with the extended cuts of any of Peter Jackson's films and can watch the whole of The Ten Commandments without a problem, so I have no idea how a normal modern viewer would feel about this film.

Still as I said there are good parts, it's just it can take a while to get to each one and they don't always make sense. A mixed bag that nearly killed Fox with it's out of control costs.

Yeah and it has Patrick Troughton in a scene with Gregory Peck, I can't really ask for more from a horror movie and I don't really like horror movies that much.

ScaryRob 15th Nov 2015 7:46 AM

I may have mentioned previously that I'm not much of a movie goer.
So there are bunches of movies going back three decades that I've never seen. Stuff that everyone says is "must see". Yawn.
I've been aware that Goodwill (the thrift store) sells VHS movies for 25 cents, so the other day I stopped in and got 11, for a total cost of $2.75. Sure, for 25 cents I'll watch a movie that in all probability I won't like, so what the hell.
I've watched three of them so far.

The Matrix (1999) - VHS; Sci-Fi
3.0/10
I actually did see this back in 2001, in a motel while visiting L.A., but I thought I'd take another look at it to see if I could glean any redeeming qualities - nope. I really don't see what the big deal is about this. I can definitely see why some people feel Keanu Reeves is an idiot. This does have an interesting political message, my interpretation of which is the exact opposite of what most messages have said online.

The Hunt for Red October (1998) - VHS, Drama
2.5/10
Tom Clancy novel, evil Russians, CIA outsmarts everyone, blah, blah, blah...predictable garbage is predictable.

The Big Lebowski (1998) - VHS; Comedy
2.5/10
Jeff Bridges' attempt at dead-pan, dry, stoner humor doesn't come off. With the exception of one or two lines, it simply isn't funny. The plot is asinine. I don't understand how these "stars" get paid millions and live in $30 million mansions in California. I guess that's why so many idiots go to Hollywood to try to become actors. Some of those idiots make it.

I also watched Quest for Fire again last night, a VHS tape I've had for a number of years.
Quest for Fire (1981) - VHS; Drama
9.0/10
I think this was the third time I watched this, and this time I noticed that the character played by Ron Perlman (spelling?) never gets any. By any I mean sex. He tries, but the blond character seems to get all the action. The story and locations where they filmed are great and it has many funny parts. Caveman/woman relationships, especially those involving which are pretty much limited to sex, are funny hilarious (but you have to pay attention because there is no dialogue).

I just watched this amazing Japanese movie called 24 Eyes made in 1954. It is about a progressive, modern teacher in a rural area of Japan from about 1928-1940 something. She sees her young students grow up and fears for their futures, particularly the boys who all want to go to serve in WW II. Through out the teacher recalls these kids as they age as innocents and as their lives changes, she cries for them. I've never seen a Japanese movie with so much crying! It seemed very "atypically" Japanese. 9/10.(It is a very long move, nearly 3 hours--currently running on Hulu if you are interested).

Mockingjay Part 2- yet another two-part movie that proves that most finales don't need to be two parts. There was nothing wrong with it, per se, but much like Part 1, it was about twice as long as it really needed to be.

I was right- Netflix's release of Jessica Jones was the thing to actually be excited about on the 20th.

Kung Fu Panda 2 9/10 Actually, this is the second time I've seen it. The art is so amazing and this time around, since I knew the layout of the story, I was free to appreciate the finer details. There's a lot of beauty in the choreographed fighting scenes. Every push has its pull, every yin its yang.

The Lion in Winter

First I will just say this takes a few things for granted that are now hotly debated by historians, but like Shakespeare's best plays that doesn't really matter because the characters and the acting are just so strong. I think this may be Hebern's best and most intense performance and is well worth watching for that alone. There was a pleasant surprise for me in this movie too that went beyond it's amazing production values and script and going into this movie cold(The way I try to approach all films) I had no idea it was coming. Throughout the movie I kept thinking that the guy who played King Philip of France would make a great James Bond and I had no idea why, there was just something about the way he handled himself that made me think that and then I get to the end credits and it turns out not only is he James Bond but he is my favorite James Bond! I can now understand why around this time the producers of the Bond movies wanted him to be the second Bond despite his youth, because even playing a completely different character he nails it.

I don't want to give too much away because even as someone who knew the history half the fun of the this movie was watching the way the writers and director decided to play it out in a dramatic fashion and while I didn't exactly leave this movie feeling depressed I think it may have moved me to tears more times then any other movie I have ever seen. Also it may be the most sexually explict movie I have ever seen and it doesn't even have any sex scenes in it. The way the dialog is used to describe the sex and just how personal it is to all the characters and the way it is used feels more raw to me then even something like Sin City. I may be alone in this but that is how it felt to me and for that reason I wouldn't leave kids alone watching this movie if I were a parent. Still it all serves a purpose so it doesn't feel like it is just there to exploit the lack of a film code the way many films at the time or even today feel so I am okay with it and the movie would lose a lot of it's punch and dramatic thrust without it.

In short it is the exact opposite of Cleopatra, it is focused, I care about all the characters(Even John who is made to look like a mutant freak of nature), I understand why all the characters make the choices they make, and the sets and costumes serve the story instead of it being the other way around.

This is the perfect example of how to make a historic epic that tells it's story so well I don't care about the parts where it breaks with real history. In short it is worthy of Shakespeare and if you have any interest in history, this period of film, or any of the actors involved it should be the next film you view. Just be prepared to tear up in a few places.

In short I find this movie to be pretty much perfect, it's so good I can't even nit pick at the history.

10/10.

Agreed. Everyone in my family loved it and I like most of the stuff the Nolans do even being a huge fan of Person of Interest, liking The Dark Knight rises, and thinking Man of Steel was just misunderstood and that it would have been a great way to launch a DC movie universe if they were not jumping right to Batman Vs. Superman for the second movie and they kept Frank Miller well away from it, but they didn't. My point is I am a huge Nolan fan and even I couldn't take all that earth dying for no reason and love being more powerful then time and space BS. This movie wanted to be 2001 and instead it ended up being no better then one of the Transformers movies. I was so looking forward to it and I expected to be the one person out there defending this movie, but after I saw it once I had no interest in ever seeing it again. Everyone has to have one giant bomb in their past, let's hope this is as bad as it gets from either of the Nolans.

Boy 7 (2015) 6/10

Its a movie based on the book by Mirjam Mous, set in the near future where the Dutch state controls everything in the country. I guess that comes under dystopia or something? Not really sure. I liked it
Though it was weird watching a Dutch movie with English subtitles, if it was on DVD, I'd have gone for Dutch or French subtitles. Not sure if I'd watch it again, but I'll definitely read the book!

Into the West - 4/10. It was okay but I found it kind of boring
Michael Collins - 6/10. Seemed to be well done and I could appreciate the history but again it wasn't something I would've chosen.
The Secret of Roan Inish - 4/10. Again, not something I would've chosen and I found it boring.
Dancing at Lughnasa - 6/10. The best of the ones I had to watch for Irish lit, it was somewhat enjoyable though depressing.
Sons of the Clouds - 3/10. It was a documentary and it was well-made and very informative, but very dull and my friend gave up on watching it halfway through and I gave up on watching it 5/6 of the way through.
(all of the above I had to watch for class)
The Night Before - I feel like it deserves a 6/10 but I want to give it a 10/10 honestly, because I did really enjoy it and it brightened my day and made me laugh a lot. It was really stupid and not an 'amazing' movie, but I just really enjoyed it.

A grim movie about immigrant life in Queens, New York (?) during the 1980s. Its really well made, though it does contain some rather brutal scenes, I think it shows that aspect of life really well. The music is really nice too! Also that dude's curly hair

Edit: Omg, I just finished the movie :O Like the ending was expected, yet unexpected you know?

Don't Blink--with Brian Austin Greene, Mena Suvari, and Zack Ward. 3-4/10. A little creepy at first, but it began to get ridiculous and there was no real resolution. I don't know if the place itself was cursed or what, it's probably something they wanted the audience to put their own meaning into. Mine was that it has to do with the fear of not being remembered or being important.

The Conjuring (2013) - DVD; Horror
8/10
I actually watched this about a year ago, so pretty much all details elude me.
Supposedly based on a true story, a family moves into an old country home and experiences hauntings. They hire paranormal investigators and things get markedly worse. Good quality and quantity of fright scenes. I would recommend this to horror fans.

So I watched The Force Awakens...
It's definitely a good movie. I liked the fact that even though there's quite a lot of CGI effects, they don't feel heavy and innatural as in the last three chapters (or perhaps it's just that today's CGI effects look more natural to my eyes).
I actually think they really tried to use as much real-set scenes as they could, even if they could have gotten away more easily with green screens and all that stuff, but I think they made the right choice. I also liked that the cast was very diverse in terms of ethnicity and gender.

I give it 8/10 because I wasn't in the "I've waited 10 years for this" mindset like 95% of the other movie-goers. But it's definitely worth a watch!

I never understood the appeal of anything related to Star Wars. I was a teenager when the original came out in 1977 and at the time I thought I had seen better TV episodes of Star Trek. I also liked Close Encounters of the Third Kind better, at the time. Hence, I never cared about any of the Star Wars sequels.
It just seems to me that these movies would not appeal to anyone over the age of 12 or 13.

I think they show a pretty neat depiction of how fantasy and sci-fi themes were perceived in a different time. It's like watching The Twilight Zone episodes for me... This kind of entertainment is so different from what you can find nowadays in movies and tv shows, they are almost exotic in some way.
It's like seeing what people used to be amazed by 30 years ago and if you see it with this mentality it really is indeed amazing. I don't know how to explain this!

Pretty much short movie that was put up online earlier this year. In brief its a tacky 80s movie that references police and kung fu movies of the time. The soundtrack is pretty...rad (yeah, I used the word). Everything is so exaggerated and ridiculous you can't not love it :lovestruc

Star Wars 7 Review Spoilers

Star Wars the Force Awakens.

Minor Spoilers....

This film has the two best leads I have seen in an action adventure film since The Lord of the Rings and I ended up not caring if the old characters turned up at all. This just feels like a Star Wars movie, it's the character that are complex, not the plot and that is as it should be. If you read into this what is right now a fan theory I really like this movie. The theory is this, Rey is Luke's daughter, Luke's wife was murdered by Ren after dropping her of on the Jakku to keep her safe, Luke didn't know where she was but he knew that he he fought Ren it would quickly turn into an act of revenge, so he couldn't fight Ren because he had to stay away from that path, so he did what he did in Jedi when he fought Vader, he went into hiding. Now Ray only beat Ren because she used the darkside, she was hitting him in anger the same way Luke hit Vader at the end of Jedi, the way that left him about thirty seconds from going full blown Sith. At the end of the movie his long lost daughter turns up and he can sense the dark side in her so he doesn't want to take the lightsaber and train her but at the same time he has been waiting for someone to come, someone who can stand up to Ren but who doesn't want personal revenge. So in the next movie Luke's job will have to be to train Rey while finding a way to do with her what he was unable to do with Ren, and that is get her to outright reject the path to the dark side and he knows how strong that temptation can be.

If this is the case when you add that depth to the already fun action scenes and two great leads who's future adventures I can't wait to see then you have a truly great blockbuster that washes the awful taste of Jurassic World(a movie I couldn't even finish) out of my mouth 9.0/10.

I have seen this movie twice in theaters using money I was saving to get my 360 fixed, that is how good it is and if you have not seen this movie but you enjoy fun adventure stories, go see it, you will not regret it.

Saturday evening, I was bored, surfing "teh interwebz" when I suddenly remembered that I've never seen the first half of TD. I decided to fix that immediately. And now I have many regrets. How did it even make it to the cinema? I can't remember the dude's name, but damn, that's one annoying main character (the know it all kind) with an awkward accent. Not sure if its an actual accent or a made up one though. I still find it hard to believe that they characters were high school students- they were obviously too old, except for the dude in the bandana.

I think the Fast and Furious should have stopped after the 2nd movie.

The Dark Valley --6/10
One of those "mysterious village + stranger with a past" stories. The backstory was strong enough but the way the movie revealed it was really lacking--at one point, the narrator just blurts out the explanation of the mystery! I would have much preferred a gradual revelation through in-scene clues. It felt so lazily done and robbed the story of the drama and atmosphere that it could have had. "Show, not tell."
Also: minus points for asking for too much suspension of disbelief (you know, the solo-hero winning against an entire group who could just shoot him dead) and not enough character definition.

Instead, it's a lonely and kinda odd girl with a somewhat abusive sister who adopts this "dog" that everyone else thinks is a monster with bad sci-fi elements and the same facial expressions from Treasure Planet. But that's what I get from watching a 2002 Disney movie; the early 2000s were such an odd period for them.

If you are religious you might like it. Or well if you are open minded in general. But I personally did not like it. Too much of a cliche for me and my mom pretty much told me the main message of the movie is that if you go to church and believe in God,k good things till happen to you forever.

The Invention of Lying
Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garnier, Loius CK without beard, and an antagonistic slightly evil clark kent

Can this movie successfully illustrate a believable alternate reality where people don't understand lying? Will Gervais dress up as Jesus? Does he get the girl at the end even though she's not attracted to him?
If you tried guessing the answers in your head I bet you got them all right.

Dogs have a difficult time generalizing. In this movie people have twice as the difficulty understanding that someone can intentionally say something false. So throughout the story my brain had enough room to wonder about the situation presented. If people didn't tell untruths and there was no Christianity or any religion to believe in, but people still had marriage and weddings in chapels, then what kind of vows and to what greater entity were they made to join two people in love before the times of the movie? What opposition did contraception, abortion, and porn find in the non-religious world and did great britain ever have Polari? Is there circumcision and are either or both Gervais and slightly evil clark kent hooded? In court, do they swear in a witness with "do you cross your fingers and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye" and what happens when witnesses arrive at contradicting truths during examination? These were fun questions to chuckle with because the gags in the movie weren't funny and I did not rofl or lol once at any of them.

I've been had by this movie because Gervais, by some unexplained phenomenon, is able to reach into his creativity and tell his dying mother that really good stuff happens after we die. There are people in the room to hear it and word spreads, news crews are called and crowds gather at the house of Gervais to hear him speak the truth about the man in the sky. That's a great setup, right? I didn't pick up that this movie was going to transform into a romcom. Hello, Jennifer Garner is printed on the dvd. **** me! What that means is that the implied gravity of a man hearing the truth from a man in the sky that we're going to see our loved ones or else burn in a bad place, what could've been at stake is shifted over to "Oh noe, Jennifer Garner is going marry clark kent instead of me." So yeah, I'm just mad. The movie wasn't big enough for what could have been in the hands of a bigger budget / what I was hoping to see.

Rating: 6 unfinished masturbations / 10

Good things about the movie: It pokes fun at the idea that people who will believe anything will believe a man in the sky, but also implies that Christianity in our world is something that is needed. Jennifer Garner is a good actor here and her character development brings her from a normie to someone better and capable of loving someone. Beginning of the movie, it's entertaining to hear what people casually say to each other when they don't lie. Things like, "I'm threatened by you and I've always hated by you, good luck." Tina Fey has a small role as second antagonist. Though the jokes are lame, the touching moments make up for it. Gervais is not an awful actor.

pirate_wolf_12 2nd Apr 2016 7:52 AM

10 Cloverfield Lane: Classic American love story, girl gets locked in a basement by an unstable man willing to exercise his second amendment right before Obama steals his guns to fund abortiom. Except there's also a sci-fi twist to it. For a movie that's basically a bottle episode, it's the perfect mixture of suspense, horror, and drama and it never feels like it drags. I won't be able to look at Dan Conner the same way, but I'll look for future Mary Elizabeth Winstead movies more. Shout out to John Gallagher Jr, too, whose smaller role is under appreciated.

8/10. Ending, though cool, feels like an entirely separate movie. I can't help but feel that tying it to the Cloverfield franchise was a late addition.

Okay Civil War spoilers coming so be aware if you have not seen it.

First off it was a much better film than BVS 9.5/10. This movie is based on a comic book story line that caused me to stop reading Marvel comics so I had that bias against it going in.

Second I think the Guardians of the Galaxy need to come to earth because this whole mess could have been sorted by Rocket the Racoon. "BooHoo my son was killed, Boo hoo my mommy and daddy were killed, That is no excuse for getting everyone else dead along the way!" I mean really he is much more mature then Tony was in this movie and I now want Stark to die. He left people to rot in a hole without a trial just because he wanted personal revenge and he violated the accords just as much as everyone else and yet he didn't put himself in one of those holes in the middle of nowhere.

He was told to bring in Cap and Bucky, instead when it gets personal he tries to straight up murder them. he is a selfish murderer and I am glad Pepper got away from him. He was fine with Bucky when he had murdered other people's family members, but when it is his own then he is above the law and he doesn't get touched because he is rich. That isn't a moral stand that is being selfish and the way he put Peter Parker in danger and blackmailed him into working with him makes him a straight up super villain.

He uses people and then sticks them in a hole when he doesn't need them any more, he forces minors to fight in a war for him, he uses his money to get out of living by the laws that he says everyone else should live by, and he tries to murder anyone who gets in his way. I really wish Vission had missed and killed him instead, because he send others to prison over what happened in the last Avengers movie when he was the one who unleashed Ultron on the world and they tried to stop him, and then he tries to straight up murder cap.

You know as much of a drunken nut as Batman was in Batman Vs. Superman, he at least when he was given a reason to think about what he was doing(That reason was beyond stupid, but the reason he rethought what he was doing doesn't matter here.) he took a step back and pulled away from straight up murder, Tony never even tries that. I hate him.

He is above the law because he is rich and the only reason this happened was because of his ego, he wants to be the only person with super powers and he is willing to kill to make it that way.

Still it was all very well handled, I liked the new Spiderman, to me he combines the best of live action, cartoon, and comic book Spiderman and finally puts him on the big screen.

Black Panther was good too and I liked Ant man in this even more then I did in his own movie.

Not to mention that this movie is full of moments that make you think. The accords seem like a good idea on paper and even the US constitution needed to be changed once it was written, but that doesn't change the fact that they don't work at the moment and Tony used them to advance his own selfish ends and he doesn't seem to regret his actions in the least and he used a child in his army.

I liked Black Widow switching sides and I really want her to get a solo movie.

If you only see one action block buster this year, make it this movie.

Just because I hate Tony after it doesn't make it a bad movie, and if you don't agree with me about Tony, that is fine because that just means the movie did it's job and showed both sides of the conflict and presented a complex problem with no easy answers in a fun way.

Great job by all involved and before I didn't want to see yet another Spider-Man reboot, now I can't wait for it. I just hope he doesn't let himself be used as a tool by Tony in that film like he did in this one. Still the best live action Spider-Man and this may be the best live action Marvel movie so far, from a comic I hated.

Amazing job.

9.5/10.

Ever since the incident in Aurora, I don't see films until they have copies available at my department store, affectionately called Freddy's after the founder.

But the last movie I watched was out of season and realized "Screw this, I'm turning into my parents."

A Christmas Story 9.7/10
First of all, Jean Shepherd not only wrote the source material titled "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash", but narrates Ralphie (the main character) as an adult reminiscing his childhood ambition for a BB gun and secretly appears as a shopper in the department store at the front of the line for Santa. Classic quotes include:
"In the heat of battle, my father wove a tapestry of obscenity that, as far as we know, is still hanging in space over Lake Michigan"
"Randy laid there like a slug, it was his only defense"
"Now, I could have imagined it, but I thought I heard Taps being played softly"

This Christmas film is riotous and rarely conformed to the standard cloyingly sweet kinds.

^ Ya, I absolutely love that movie, I watch it every year. The "major prize" thing with the lamp/leg thing always kills me. Poor Ralphie's mom is so embarrassed of that eyesore. The tongue stuck to the frozen flagpole is funnier than hell too, but I think my favorite scene is when the neighbors ( Bumpus family, lol) dogs destroy the big dinner. Good times!
