'Let Kids Be Kids' - Lifespan and School Vacation Mods

I'm trying to get this in while the Activity Month theme is still 'time'. I have for you 2 mods today. They can work together or separately, but I do think they make a nice pair so they are together. The first is an aging mod, and the second is a school summer vacation mod. These both work nicely with my updated calendars, so be sure to check them out.

Lifespan Mod
Babies 3 days // Toddlers 6 days // Children 12 days // Teens 12 days // Adults between 35 to 40 days // Elders between 10 to 30 days

Can someone please explain to me the rationale behind EAxis' weird default choices for age lengths? There are more than a few spots where it bugs the crap out of me, so I finally caved and decided to fix stuff. Everyone and their mother has an aging mod, so here's mine.

First off, the toddlers. Four days is in no way long enough to learn the three basic skills not to mention Nursery Rhymes and regular skills, even with a stay at home parent. While I want to give them a few more days, I don't like the versions that double or triple toddler time because the little rugrats do get on my nerves after a while. So, I've added a few more days. After playtesting, six days feels like enough to get everything in and still have some time for playing on the side. With the tots being tots just a little longer, I feel like I can invest in creating adorable nurseries for them now.

Next up, kids and teens. Only eight days really isn't enough for my kids to be kids. They have one or two weeks at school and suddenly its off to more adult things like boys and spiting their parents. Whatever happened to hopscotch and make-believe? And why do teens have nearly double the amount of time that kids have? If mom and dad have a teen in the house and they pop out in a new kid, in the game, that new kid can age up to a teen before the original one leaves for college. How does that make any sense? In real life kids are kids from about 4ish to 12, and teens are teens from 12 to 20. Both are 8 years, so what gives? I've rebalanced it so both age groups have 12 days. The great thing about the 12 days for kids comes in the next mod, so keep reading.

The last annoyance was with the adults. 29 days just isn't enough. The only way that mom and dad can see their kids to college before they become old and slumpy is if they have only a few kids right after graduation themselves. The default time length was so short, I barely have any sims at that life stage right now, it's effectively turned my hoods into a southern Florida retirement community - definitely not what I was going for! >.< I prefer to give my newly minted adults a little time before tying them down with kids. Let them get up a few rungs on the job ladder, enjoy their hobbies and such. Kids are expensive! I originally tried upping it more than what you see here, but that was just too much time and they ended up topping out their careers while their kids were still toddlers. I'm pretty sure I have the balance correct now. As for the elders themselves, I think I might have shortened their span a bit. I've lowered the min range so that sims with bad lives can die of a heart attack at 50 and those blessed with happiness can live till they are 80.

This mod also affects plantsims, but if you don't have seasons, it doesn't matter.
Sprouts have 6 days // Adults have between 37 to 40 days // Elders have between 10 to 20 days

Please note, this age mod (and most others) will not coincide with what inTeen is expecting for its fertility calculations. The adult life span is lengthened, so you might encounter oddities with having babies at the tail end of the agespan.

Summer Vacation Mod

The second mod I have for you is a school summer vacation mod. I had downloaded one a while ago that let your kids have summer off, but it was based on the actual season, so in Strangetown kids had half the year off, and in Riverblossom they never got vacation. Then I found that this creator had made an alternative version based on the season quadrant instead of the season itself. This was lovely, except they only made it for quads 1 and 3. I personally like to play with my seasons and year set up Northern Hemisphere style - Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter. This means I need it for quad 2. So, I took to editing it myself and did just that. A fantastic little feature of this is that you can still direct your sims to go to school during summer. I've found that I send any child with lower than a B- to this 'summer school' to catch up on their grades, while the more scholarly ones can enjoy the warm weather.

Now, I also wanted to give my little simmies a winter holiday free from school, so on the fourth day of winter they stay home. You can not direct sims to go to school on this day. This is Winter's Day. You may think of it as Christmas or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or Yule or Winter Break an extra Snow Day or whatever else fits best into your story line. I think of it as Winter's Day and we celebrate with a decorated tree and give gifts and spend time with family.

To use this most effectively, you will need to go through all your hoods and make sure that your 'years' are all set up the same, with the second season being the one that you want your kids home for, and the fourth season the one for 'Winter's Day'. It doesn't actually need to be winter during Winter's Day, ask our friends in Australia If there is sufficient demand for it, I'll make a Southern Hemisphere version with the school break following their schedules instead.

Please also note that if you have InTeen, my summer vacation mod needs to load after it. Either put "zz_" on my mod's file name if they are in the same folder, or make sure inTeen's folder is alphabetically before the summer vacation mod's folder. There are two versions, one for those with BV and one for those without it. Please pick the correct one for your game setup.

Well, that's about it. I hope everyone had a happy 2012 and I'm looking forward to an exciting 2013!
Enjoy!

Oooh, this is so exciting! I love your vacation mod! Honestly, EA invented seasons and weekdays and even came up with two different versions of additional Christmas stuff CDs, but they never thought to actually give the sims some kind of holiday?! Oh, EA... hopeless.

I would have grabbed this IMMEDIATELY if it were compatible with Inteen... So, counting sweetbaby's cats, this makes me ...vote 13 or something!

neonhorn, yes the age mod will work with the others I linked to (kinda why I linked to them) The others however, won't have that one Winter's Day off.

I tried to set it up according to the actual months too and the problem is that both January and December just fall squarely in winter no matter what you do. My solution to that was so kick January to the end of the year and let the year start in Feb. The first days of Spring are still snowy and cold because of how the game handles season transitions, so the beginning of my year is still cold and accurate to Feb weather.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I count 7 votes for inTeen (as much as I love cats, they don't get to vote). I guess I'll start work on an inTeen version. -.-

These mods look to be just what I have been looking for! Thanks for making them! I can't wait to try!!

If it isn't too much trouble can I be the one to request a Southern Hemisphere mod for the school vacation? I am Australian and our school year runs according to the calendar year. This means our long Summer vacation happens at the end of the year (incorporating Christmas and New Year) and our Winter Holiday would be mid-year.

Ideally this mod would run in this season order for Aussies:

Fall-Winter-Spring-Summer

Is it possible to do this? Thanks in anticipation!

Airelda, so you'd have the 4th season be your summer break? What are the general dates for your winter break? Winters Day is loosely based on Christmas, and that doesn't change with the seasons, do you have another holiday that is always a day off from school? If I get a few more people interested in a Southern version I'll make it.

Both teens and kids. I know I'm focusing a bit more on kids for this upload, but I wouldn't leave the teens out! (Actually, I couldn't, the school code doesn't distinguish between the two ages.)

Usually, I don't like aging mods, but this one I do like - because unlike all of those "let's triple or quadruple everybody's life spans" mods, this one makes sense. I love the summer and winter holidays mod as well, but I use InTeen so that one's out for me (and I'm adding my vote for an InTeen compatible version).

But the aging mod is going straight into my Downloads folders. Thank you!

I really love the idea of this hack. I've never downloaded an age hack for two reasons:
1) The increases/decreases seemed sort of silly and thoughtless for actual gameplay
2) and you guessed it! inTeen!

Maybe I am misinformed, or I am using very old information that only exists in my brain, but I recall not being able to download any hacks that modify ages in conjunction with inTeen. So, if I understand your post correctly, this age hack should be functional with inTeen, but the vacation hack not so?
Because I originally saw that vacation hack you posted, and never downloaded it because I set up my seasons exactly the way you do. (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) with some other towns (like Riverblossom) that have different seasons.
Could you count me in for another "vote" for the vacation mod?

Also, if the inTeen version of the vacation mod is produced, would it be incompatible with any other school mods? Such as "bring friends home dialog" by twojeffs or cyjon mods?

Thanks!

Ok, everyone who want the inTeen version is being roped in to being testers for me because I do not have it, and you all want it.

Please do 3 things for me, download my vacation mod and try to run it in your game (WITHOUT SAVING). Let the game run through two seasons either the first and second, or the second and third. See when the school bus comes. Order groceries. If this works perfectly, report back and enjoy (it was reported that certain flavor packs cause the clash).

If it does not work, report back and tell me exactly what happened. Then download the two inTeen mods by poifectly_poiple (by season and by quadrant), do the same thing (WITHOUT SAVING) and tell me what happens. It was reported that the quadrant one made the bus never show up. I need to find a working base code to start from. Let's do this!

1- I live in Southern hemisphere too (Brazil) and we don't have winter snow, we have a month winter vacation in July, our summer vacation lasts about 2 months - December and January. The school year begins in February and ends in November.
This seasons subject is complex; I don't play with winter because where I live we have about one week of very cold temperatures (bellow 5ºC) so I play 'summer, fall, fall, spring' or 'summer, fall, spring, summer' and let my Simmies boil in summer just like myself. LOL Nonetheless I would love a Southern version of the Summer Vacation mod.

2- I never used an agging mod because my Simmies live for ever thanks to the gallons of Life Elixir they drink and when I'm sick of having a teenager at home I just send him to the University, but your ratio makes more sense so I'm willing to try it in my game.

3- I love your work!

Thank you so much.

After a bit of internet research, it's come to my attention that the age mod might also be incompatible with inTeen. Age mods throw off the length of adulthood and thereby mess with the fertility calculations. Use at your own risk. >.>

The age mod works just fine, thank you! Can't see how the summer vacation goes for my Sim kids, every household is currently in either Fall or just entering Winter, dammit. When it's time for Winter Day, I think I'll finally put Holidays SP stuff in use.

For those waiting for an inTeen version: I've had early reports that the conflict may no longer exist. Please download and try it yourself. There are 2 errors to look for. The first is that the bus either still comes during quad 2 or doesn't return in quad 3. The second error is the real one to look for, Order Groceries, if that works fine, congrats, enjoy. If not you will get stuck in endless loops and have to exit without saving. Please report back which Flavor Packs you have if this happens to you.

As I understand it age mods are usually incompatible with the "No Adult Teens" flavour pack for inteen (because they just screw it up entirely) and can also throw off fertility calculations (with both inteen and ACR) as you mentioned - although your mod seems close enough to the original entire baby->adult age span that it shouldn't cause too much of an issue.

I like the age span mod - I have a similar one which I tweaked myself, and I've just set up a calendar for my hood in order to try to celebrate Christmas and have the summer holidays for my sim kids I was just planning to switch them all to flexi-school temporarily, but this sounds like it would take the work out, if it turns out to be compatible with inteen. I use the back to school flavour pack so I'll have to let you know if it works since that one affects school directly.

simsfreq, the calendars I just uploaded and updated will remind you when it's Winters' Day. That and this were sorta made to work together.

So let me get this straight (my mind isn't as sharp as it used to be) ... if I want to play the summer/Winter's Day mod in-game, ALL of my neighborhoods have to have the same seasons? I can't have Summer-Summer-Spring-Fall in one neighborhood and Spring-Summer-Fall-Winter in another? But this won't hurt your game, though ... just personal preference ... correct?

Thanks to ALL free-site creators, admins and mods.

gazania, no. It does not matter what your seasons are, but your kids aren't going to go to school during the second season, and winter's day will be in the fourth season, so you should set your seasons up to reflect a calendar year - regardless of the weather. You can have summer set to be all four seasons, but its going to be the second season and the fourth season that the kids have their days off from school. The second season should be when your year is the hottest, and the fourth is the coldest. It will work just the same in a hood with Spring/Spring/Fall/Fall, or Spring/Summer/Summer/Fall, or Winter/Spring/Fall/Winter, as it does with Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter.
