UPDATE 21: There is an issue in the game which can prevent NPCs who are on duty from properly cleaning dishes which are stacked on top of each other. Maids, butlers and housekeepers who have very low or very high Neat are especially affected. This update fixes this issue.

UPDATE 20: NPCs won't try to take the trash out if the trash bin isn't at least 1/3 full.

UPDATE 19: When a sim initiates the Dispose interaction on flowers, and if the interaction gets cancelled before the sim picks the flowers, then the game will prevent the sim from continuing to pick up the flowers, and will end the interaction.

UPDATE 18: Sims will not just consider cleaning disposable dishes within the apartment suite that the dishes are in any more, because adding that functionality is not easy, not to mention unnecessary, because that prevents sims from disposing dishes in the trash chutes which may be just outside their apartment. So, sims can dispose dishes in any available object that allows disposing.

UPDATE 17: If the mug, cup or dish happens to be within an individual apartment suite, then sims will now only consider washing or disposing of them within the apartment suite that they are in. If there are no objects that can be used to clean them, then sims will simply not clean them.

UPDATE 16: This update redesigns the feature I added to the mod in UPDATE 13. Now, sims will not throw a route failure tantrum if they are trying to clean a dish which is on a dining table, and as long as they are within 5 tiles of the dish. This way, the mod completely fixes the "unreachable dish on a dining table surrounded by dining booths" problem. Servers will also actually pick up the dishes and wash them, rather than the game deleting the dish. The only way sims can throw a route failure tantrum and fail to clean the dish, and the game can delete the dish if the sim is a server, is when the sim is somehow unable to route within 5 tiles of the dish no matter what.

UPDATE 15: I have added one additional check to the feature I added to the mod in UPDATE 13. Sims won't be allowed to pick up dishes if their interaction has been cancelled.

UPDATE 14: The game allows sims to clean espresso cups even if they are still on the espresso machine or barista bar, and this update prevents this behaviour.

UPDATE 13: If a sim tries to clean a dish which is inaccessible (if it is on the inaccessible side of a dining table which is surrounded by a dining booth and so on), then the game deletes the dish if the sim who is trying to clean is currently engaged in the Be Server interaction of the dining podium, so that such inaccessible dishes get deleted in restaurants. But, other sims such as managers or business owners and their family can also try to clean dishes, and in such a case the sim throws a route failure tantrum and cannot clean the dish, and this goes on forever on a loop. This update makes it so that, if the sim can't reach the dish, but happens to be in the same room and within 3 tiles of the dish, then they will still throw a route failure tantrum, but then will take the dish and continue to wash it. This completely fixes the problem.

UPDATE 12: There is an annoying issue in an unmodded game which sometimes prevents certain sims from being able to clean dishes. Rotational players are very likely to come across this issue. Dishes will be unclickable as if they are in use, even if they are not. The glitch happens when a sim has a Dining token. Maxis made it so that sims who are currently dining are unable to clean dishes, which is fine, but it looks like the token may get stuck, especially if the player leaves the restaurant lot while a playable (but currently unplayed) sim is dining, so the next time the player switches to that sim's household, the sim will still have the Dining token which then prevents the sim from interacting with dishes. This mod makes it so that if the Dining token comes from a lot different from the currently loaded lot, then it won't prevent sims from interacting with dishes. Also, you shouldn't worry about those stuck Dining tokens much, because the next time the sim dines at any restaurant, the game will delete any Dining tokens that the sim may have.

UPDATE 11: The game sometimes still allowed sims to wash dishes even if there wasn't an available object for washing dishes. This update fixes that.

UPDATE 10: Sims won't try to autonomously clean dishes on hotel lots if there is a dining podium.

UPDATE 9:
- Sims need to pass the checks of the mod to be able to autonomously clean newspapers.
- I found out that there is a problem with espresso cups in an unmodded game. When a sim washes an espresso cup in a sink, the game sometimes resets the sim without an error, and the sink remains full of water and sometimes the sink sound gets stuck. This should now be fixed.
Note: I have added a new Dishwasher Mod to this page, scroll down below to read the description for that mod.

UPDATE 8: Fixed a few more things with coffee mugs and espresso cups.

UPDATE 7: Customers won't clean up coffee mugs and espresso cups on OFB lots.

UPDATE 6: Sims who pass the checks of the mod to clean up coffee cups and mugs will immediately try to clean them up when they are finished drinking, instead of leaving them on surfaces or on the ground.

UPDATE 5:
- In an unmodded game, sims who have higher than 100 Neat are allowed to autonomously take out trash from trash containers and compactors if there is even a single object in the container. This update requires the sim to pass the same cleaning checks of this mod, and requires the container to be at least one-third full for the sim to be allowed to take out trash from trash containers/compactors.
- Business owners and their family members also need to pass the checks of this mod if the business is currently closed.

UPDATE 4: NPCs and Employees still tried to clean up coffee mugs/cups even if there was no place to wash them on the lot. This update fixes that.

UPDATE 3: Sims were unable to clean up coffee mugs and espresso cups, this has been fixed.

UPDATE 2: I realized that I forgot to add the "Don't clean if there is a maid or butler and so on" feature to cleaning dishes, so this fixes that.

UPDATE 1:
- Sims who have between 100 and 300 Neat need to have a mood of 25 or higher to clean. Sims who have between 700 and 900 Neat need to have a mood of -25 or higher to clean.
- If the sim has 300 or lower Neat, the sim won't clean anything at all if there is a maid, butler or bellhop on the lot. If these NPCs are not on the lot, the sim will still not clean anything if your house is subscribed to a maid or butler service.
- I found out about something truly ridiculous about cleaning in this game. If the object that the sim is trying to clean is supposed to be washed in a sink or dishwasher (regular food plates, bowls, coffee cup/mug and so on, but not TV dinner, appetizers, toaster pastry), and if the sim is unable to wash them (if there is no accessible or functioning sink/dishwasher), then the game allows sims to throw the plates into the trash. This doesn't make any sense. So, what is the point of dishwashers then? Or what is the point of having a sink in the kitchen? This update prevents sims from throwing washable plates into the trash. If they don't have a sink or dishwasher, they will not try to clean up washable dishes any more. If the player orders the sim to clean up such an object, the sim will put it back on an available surface, because they can't wash it.

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION

In an unmodded game, sims love cleaning stuff. Even if the sim has zero Neat, they will end up cleaning dishes, sinks, showers and so on sooner or later, usually sooner. It is impossible to have real, sloppy sims in this game. The game allows sims to clean objects if their mood is over a certain threshold. The problem is that the threshold is below zero even for extremely sloppy sims. This is why everybody is very clean in this game. In addition, there are no mood checks for cleaning dishes, meaning that sims are able to wash dishes even if they have zero Neat, and -100 mood.

This mod changes the requirements for a sim to be allowed to clean objects autonomously. Now, if the sim has 900 or higher Neat, they need -50 or higher mood to be allowed to clean objects. If the sim has 100 or lower Neat, they need 50 or higher mood. Other sims need to have 0 or higher mood. These checks have also been added to washing dishes. Additionally, this mod prevents sims from autonomously washing dishes on OFB lots. Sims are also prevented from washing dishes on community lots where there is a dining podium. Only the owner, the family of the owner, employees and NPCs will wash dishes on those lots.

Wash Dish Mod: In an unmodded game, sims take only one loop to wash dishes at sinks. Their Neat personality or Cleaning skill, or the number of dishes they are washing has no effect on how long it takes for them to wash dishes. I don't think this makes sense at all. This is a separate mod that makes it so that how long it takes for sims to wash dishes at the sink depends on the number of dishes they are washing, their Neat personality and Cleaning skill. If you have sims who have low Neat personality and Cleaning skill, then you should consider getting a dishwasher. So, this mod makes dishwashers much more relevant.
Wash Dish Mod-SkillVersion: This version allows sims to increase their Cleaning skill while washing dishes. When they gain a skill point, the game will show the notification "Sim has gained a point of Cleaning skill washing dishes!" which is only available in English. If you play the game in a language other than English, you will want to translate the mod and here is how you do it:
- Open the mod in SimPE, and click on the resource called Dialog prim string set.
- Select your language from the drop-down menu and left-click on the dialogue line below, then translate it in the box above.
- Click Commit File to the right and then save the mod.
UPDATE 1: This mod is now compatible with my new Utility Mod. +15 will be added to water usage for animation loop. This feature is only enabled if you have Utility Mod.
UPDATE 2: It was taking too long for sims to wash dishes, so this update halves the required number of loops for washing dishes.

Dishwasher Mod: This is a very cool mod that changes the way dishwashers work. In an unmodded game, whenever a sim puts dishware into a dishwasher, the game immediately turns on the dishwasher. The dishwasher runs for a few seconds and then stops. While the dishwasher is running, the game still allows other sims to put more dishes into the dishwasher. It makes no sense. This mod makes it so that the game does not force the dishwasher to turn on immediately after a sim puts dishes into the dishwasher, but starts tracking how many pieces of dishware there is inside the dishwasher. When the number of dishes reaches 10 or higher, then the game makes the dishwasher run. While the dishwasher is running, sims cannot put any more dishes into the dishwasher, meaning that they will try to wash the dishes somewhere else (another available dishwasher or sink). Dishwashers also run for longer now, which is much more realistic.

You need the latest version of 7zip or WinRAR to get this mod.

I'm amazed at how many mods you make and how quickly you make them! Thanks so much for fixing infelicities in the game.

Another Maxis oversight fixed. Thanks! Will a future version include handling leftovers, or is that beyond the scope of this mod?

Thank you very much for your mod. I saw something similar in Midge, but there are more corrections in yours .. It infuriates me when a sim in a restaurant cleans dishes for everyone, when there is a waiter who apparently doesn't care about dirty dishes

I don't allow my sims a lot of opportunities to do things autonomously, but every so often they manage to sneak something in, and yes all too often it's attempting to clean something I don't want them to clean! (And that makes no sense given their personality.) I also tend to keep my sims in rather high mood (and when I do have one in a bad mood, I don't think I ever ask them to clean!!), so I didn't realize it was easier to get a sim to clean than to play chess! That's so bizarre! Thanks so much for addressing these issues. :D

I really love the idea of Wash Dish Mod, but HCDU is showing a conflict with Xptl's washing dishes raises cleaning skill mod:
Is this the sort of conflict I can ignore?

Edit: Thanks so much for incorporating the skilling functionality into the dish washing mod!

Hello again! I wanted to say I'm excited about the new features in the updated Cleaning Mod; however, it now conflicts with Pescado's coffeecuphack:

I've had Pescado's mod in my game for years and appreciate the annoyance-reduction. Just hoping I can keep most or all the fuctionality of both mods if at all possible.

I haven't properly tested this mod but I have to say 2 things. One, this is so beautiful that you can't imagine how much I loved it. The cleaning skill was almost useless in the game as being Sloppy or Neat doesn't has a really interaction. Now, being able (or unable) to clean properly depending on cleaning skill and personality makes it more real, steady and useful, so thank you for this change.

Another think Ive been thinking a lot and haven't checked if happens with this mod or nah... Does the personal hygiene matters? I believe than a Neat sim would try to shower as always as possible, but I'd think a sloppy one won't go autonomously to have a shower unless under a thresold lower than a neat sim, lets say, 25% for sloppy and 60% for a neat one. Also, how the enviroment matters. For a neat and high cleaning skill lvl sim, 1 dish could ruim their enviroment motive, but a sloppy sim wouldn't even matters.

Anyway, this is an incredible mod than Im adding it to my game right away.

Hi, I'm not the creator but you can download just the "CleaningMod", just the "WashDishMod" or both. But you have to choose between "WashDishMod" and "WashDishMod-SkillVersion".

My family trees: Midocaito

I'm not sure but I think it might be because of UPDATE6 that my sims autonomously clean mugs on community lots, even go ahead and clean other mugs left by other sims.

The newest version (8) of Cleaning Mod is now showing 3 conflicts with Pescado's coffeecuphack. For now I'm going to pull Pescado's mod, but I'd love some confirmation that this mod now fully replaces that one.

I've run into an issue with this mod (CleaningMod-UPDATE11). My sims are currently staying at a campground that has an outdoor kitchen. I directed my sims to clean up some plates and he piled them all up but refuses to wash them. There is a sink sitting right there next to him, and he can use the sink to get a drink of water, but he won't use it to wash the dishes. I even tried forcing an error on the sink and resetting it, but that didn't help; he still just picks up the stack of dishes and then places them back on the counter. I'm attaching a picture so you can see the setup I mean. I can't think of why he would not know that sink exists, but I do know the picking up and putting back down behaviour comes from this mod.

@frostmane, as of update 5 I believe CleaningMod is meant to replace the entire functionality of CyJon's LessTrashDuty. I admit I don't see anything in simler90's documentation about owned business lots, but I also don't know what the threshold is where customers begin complaining about trash in trash receptacles. As far as the actual autonomy of taking out trash goes, these two mods are trying to do the same thing so you have to pick one.

This conflicts with Cyjon's No Visitor Chores so I think a great update could be to incorporate those changes into your mod so that visitors no longer do chores like cleaning dishes around your house. Thanks for your amazing work

I've actually never had visitors trying to clean things up unless I specifically influenced them to do so. I've never used No Visitor Chores, but you might try pulling it and seeing if you get the behaviour you'd like to see even without it.

I love this mod. I'm not sure if it's just me or I have a conflict in my game or something but one thing I've noticed that irritates me is that visitors on community lots never clean up now, only my playables with high neat and/or in a good mood do. HCDU doesn't show anything so I may have to do a 50/50. Still a great mod, so thanks!

@Rosawyn - I had a similar issue that was caused by having Pescado's nobathroomdishes mod in the game at the same time as Simler90's Cleaning Mod. On hotel lots without restaurants, dishes from room service meals could not be cleaned up because Pescado's mod was preventing the use of any sinks that weren't in a kitchen. The only sinks at these hotels were in the bathrooms.

Your layout is outdoors with no walls, so it's possible that Pescado's mod (if you even have it) is reading the area as "not a kitchen" and preventing your sims from washing dishes in the sink.

@RoxEllen1965 Damn, I've used nobathroomdishes for years. Without it, I'd have to take all sinks out of bathrooms (which is how I played before getting that mod). It was my understanding that it was the presence of a toilet or tub/shower, not the lack of "kitchen," that prevented sims from using a sink to do dishes....and I just figured it out. I've got Chris Hatch's shower hot springs object on that same campground lot, and I'll bet that is in fact flagged as a "shower" (since it is one) which is making the whole outdoor area a "bathroom." /facepalm

@Rosawyn - maybe you could put your kitchen in a fake "room" made using low fences or those floor separator/divider things that came with Pets. The game should see this as a separate "room" from wherever your shower is.

It would be great if you could make it so that also non-selectable sims (+7 neat or something) autonomously clean dishes and coffee mugs in commlots so that not always the playable sim ends up cleaning all of them.
Also, dormies should clean stuff in dormlots too.
