Updated July 11, 2015: The mod has been updated to version 6 for compatibility with the July 9, 2015 game patch. This is a suggested, but not required, update for users with the latest game patches as it updates the script with additional error checks. Starting with version 6 the mod's script is also contained in the new "ts4script" file format and can no longer be automatically installed with the Mod Manager. Simply place both files from the zip file you download into your mods folder.

You will still need to ensure that scripts mods are enabled in your game options and, as always, if you update the mod, be sure to delete the old version!

Put Books Away Mod

This mod will queue an action to put a book back on the shelf once a sim has finished reading. If the sim cannot find a bookshelf close enough that is available, they will place the book in their inventory. In addition, if the Place in World action is chosen for a book in the sims inventory, they will instead put the book on an available bookshelf.

Installation

This mod is a bit different than most as it contains both a standard package file and a script mod. Both must be installed for the mod to work properly, but the installation isn't all that complex.

Unzip both files contained in the main zip file you downloaded into your Mods folder. You should end up with a package file named 'MTS_Scumbumbo_PutBooksAway' AND a zip file named 'MTS_Scumbumbo_PutBooksAway_Script' in the Mods folder.

Make sure that scripting mods are enabled in the game options (on the "Other" tab). Be sure to check this setting after updating the game for a new patch, as if you don't turn off the show mods at startup option the game will disable scripts after an update is installed.

If you need a reference for how this should be setup, see my Keep Instruments In Inventory mod and there is a screenshot there of a similar installation. Without the script portion of the mod, visiting sims or sims on community lots can pick up books and steal them!

If you wish, the package file can be placed in a subfolder, but the zip file must go into the main Mods folder.

Compatibility
  • This mod requires the Windows version of The Sims 4 to be patched to at least version 1.3.18.1010 (December 16, 2014) or newer.
  • Use version 4 for games updated to version 1.4.83.1010 (February 3, 2015)
  • Use version 5 for games updated to version 1.5.139.1210 (March 26, 2015)
  • Use version 6 for games updated to version 1.9.80.1020 (July 9, 2015) or newer.

This mod will likely not work on the Mac unless it is updated to version 1.4.103.1210 (February 20, 2015). This update is critical for Mac users anyway, see Issues with Mods and CC in The Sims 4 on Mac for more info on this patch.

This mod may conflict with any other mods that modify the strategy for reading or putting down books or other objects. It is compatible with the Keep Instruments In Inventory mod.

As this modifies the generic strategy for putting down any book, it should continue to work for any new books added to the game.

Awesome thanks. This was part 1 of my hatred of dealing with books..The libraries were a mess.Solved. Now I wait for part 2 which is a mod to move all the books in the inventory to bookshelf at once.

Thanks for this, but I have noticed two similar types of glitches since putting this mod in that I have never seen before. First was a sim I sent to water a plant. She got stuck, just standing there watering the plant endlessly. I had to force her to stop, the game crashed a few seconds later. Next was during a visit to the nightclub. The bar staff started cleaning the bar, and likewise just got stuck doing that endlessly. I'll remove this mod and see if it happens again. It could just be a freak coincidence, yet I have never seen this glitch before today.

OMG This is literally the best scripting fix yet! I hate how sims read so much and then just leave the books lying around the house! You the real MVP!

I've seen or heard of sims getting stuck like that from day one, so I think you just had a run of bad luck. The script is the same one that's in the Keep Instruments In Inventory mod, so it's been around for a while and the XML tuning would only affect what happens immediately after reading a book. I will keep my eyes open though!

A friend of mine had a sim who got stuck in a loop baking a cake, eating a piece, getting up and getting another piece, until she finished the cake and then started baking another and eating that one. He let it run a while and she started getting overweight and depressed about it - her answer to that was of course to eat more cake!

I had a very similar instance happen in my game, a sim who got hungry, went to the fridge and got a plate of cookies from a batch in there, set it down, went back and got another cookie and continued until she'd emptied the fridge of cookies. There were plates all over the place, but at least she didn't eat them all! I put them all back in the fridge and she started again. Sold the fridge and got a new one and all was back to normal.

Yay! More fixes for EA silliness. You couldn't have a bookworm without piles of unfinished books all over the place XD...kinda realistic actually.

This is great. Does anyone know if there is something similar for kids toys? I put them the inventory, they take them out and play with them, and then they feel the need to walk down two flights of stairs to put them on the kitchen table when done instead of in the toy box three tiles away, or better yet, back in their inventory where I had originally placed them.
