This mod makes hair and eye color genetics more realistic. It's based on a simplified real life model of genetics in which there are two genes of eye color (a brown/non-brown gene and a green/blue gene) and two genes of hair color (a dark/blonde gene and a non-red/red tone gene). In the game, there is one gene for eye color and one for hair color, so the mod is an approximation of an approximation [sic] of real life genetics, which is much more complicated.

Update (24 Jul 2017): Added a new version for those who use brown or black default replacements for dark blue eyes.
New genetics rules
  • Blonde hair dominates over red (but still black and brown hair are the most dominant);
  • Dark blue eyes are as recessive as light blue and gray ones, while green eyes dominate over them;
  • Brown eyes are still the most dominant human eyes;
  • Alien eyes dominate over all (like custom eyes) and any Sim can use them. They are available in Bodyshop.
Existing Sims' appearance won't be affected.

There are also two other versions for people who use nonstandard default replacements for dark blue eyes:
  • simNopke-moreRealisticGenetics-hazel makes dark blue eyes as dominant as green. Use for hazel, amber, or green DRs.
  • simNopke-moreRealisticGenetics-brown makes dark blue eyes as dominant as brown. Use for brown or black DRs.
Use only one version of the mod. simNopke-moreRealisticGenetics is also a version.

Genetic values (greater means more recessive) of the genes:

Rikkulidea has written how the game genetics works, check it out if you want to know something more about it.

Conflicts
Despite a conflict, this mod can be used with Creature fixes by Pescado but must loads after it.
I advise against using this mod with mods changing genetics, visibility in the catalog, or "townification" of blonde hair, or alien, green, or dark blue eyes. If you really want to keep those mods though, make sure they load after this mod.

Well, it doesn't seem possible to fully reflect even the known hair color inheritance mechanisms within one game...
As for the blonde child of two red-haired parents, I agree, it is highly unlikely, but still might happen. Red hair color is actually co-dominant (incomplete dominant), so if both parents are heterozygous for this allele -blah blah blah-. OK, it's not that simple, and hair color is controlled by more than two genes, and so on...

Anyway, this scheme works for me personally and I'm really grateful for your work

Hello, just wanted to give some happy feedback:

Galvar and his wife Contessa Alannah are one of the families that triggered my request, because I thought they ought to be having children with black or brown hair. But their kids kept coming up blonde. Galvar and Alannah have had 6 children.

I was using the version Nopke's More Realistic version when the first 5 children were born.
The father: Born In Game - Galvar has black hair, hazel brown/green eyes,
his (townie) mother has blonde hair and blue eyes
his (townie) father has genetic black hair that shows up as an Xsim brown hairstyle and the hazel brown/green eyes that Galvar inherited.

Galvar's wife Alannah is a former townie vampire (Maxis face template 18, bless her!); she has bright red hair and very green eyes,

Of the first 5 children born - 4 are blonde (thanks to grandma) and one has black hair (thanks to Galvar and grandpa), all have either brown eyes or hazel brown/green eyes like Galvar and grandpa

Using the Sandi version of your mod, baby no. 6, the most recent baby was born with blonde child and blue eyes (thanks to grandma).

None of the children have red hair so far. This is what I wanted, red hair to be truly recessive and only show up as a milkman's surprise! (English joke).

So many thanks again to Nopke for making the Sandi version.

Default Love your mod!
Hello dear Nopke,

thank you for this wonderful mod. I'm such a genetics nerd and dreamed of a more realistic genetics system for the Sims for years. I'm very grateful for your mod.

Even though I know that green is more dominant than blue in real life, true green is still less common. So maybe making it less dominant in the Sims would reflect that (like in the Sandi_Sim version). However, I find the dark blue and light blue too close in color and would instead like to replace the dark blue for hazel.
So if it's not too much of a hassle, would it be possible for you to adapt Sandi_Sim's version for me?

I.e. from:
Eyes: alien: 0, brown: 1, grey, dark blue, and light blue: 2, green: 2.5
Hair: black: 0.5, brown: 1, blonde: 1.5, red: 2

To:
Eyes: alien: 0, brown: 1, hazel instead of dark blue: 1.5, grey and light blue: 2, green: 2.5
Hair: black: 0.5, brown: 1, blonde: 1.5, red: 2

Moreover, I liked the hazel version that's replacing dark blue in your description picture. Where can I get it, so I'm not using anything that could conflict with your mod?

I'm looking forward to your response and thanks again for your work.

Best regards,
lazySim

@lazySim Creating fewer green-eyed Sims would reflect that. But I've created simething special anyway:
A DIY set to give everyone freedom to create their own altered genetics: Download on SFS
Simply choose at most one file from each folder. If you can't find a certain value (1 or 2) in a folder, it probably means it's the default value and you don't need any file from that folder. If you have chosen the files, remove your previous genetics mods and use the chosen packages instead.

I'm not sure what you mean. If you're talking about the color, it's just a preview picture. I haven't created any corresponding default replacements for dark blue eyes. By the way, default replacements for textures do not conflict with mods changing genetics.

Trying to speak English well.

That's true about the green eyes. I might do that, thanks!
And very kind of you to make the DIY version available. Thank you very much
Just to be sure, I can simply put the chosen package files in a folder in downloads, right? And like other mods, putting folders in folders in the download folder would also work and not "deactivate" your mod? I just want to make sure that it truly works; I'm very excited about your mod :D

Oh okay, I was just wondering where to get the hazel color since I couldn't find much on the internet. But I will look for textures, thanks

@lazySim Right, sure. These packages work like ordinary mods. Only conflicts can deactivate them (partly or at all).

I've seen many sets of DRs that replace dark blue with hazel. There's a site that could help you to find some: Sims 2 Default Database. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any that exclusively changes dark blue eyes into pure maxis-match hazel eyes.

Trying to speak English well.
