Wow, so it looks like my fix from 2.6 caused the skill journal to blank out after save and load. Sorry about that. So much to learn, so much to test . This should fix that issue.

September 13, 2021: Version 2.7
Fixed PlayInWater so that it gains Fishing skill again.
Fixed bug where Drop Here was not being added to all prey in inventory.

September 10, 2021: Version 2.6
Fixed a bug that was resetting sims when a fish is caught.

July 21, 2021: Version 2.3
Fixed a problem with the STBL instance ID that could cause problems with non-English settings.
Added French, Chinese, and Russian translations.

Even though Sims 3 cats and dogs can be player-controlled active sims, I've never thought they had much depth of gameplay. They have exactly one visible skill, Hunting, which is used for every skill check from fights to, well, hunting.

This is the first mod in what I hope will be a series to give pets more to do. It is a fully-formed fishing skill separate from hunting that behaves closer to the way human fishing behaves. It includes:
  • A "Fish A While" interaction that behaves like human "Fish Here" with three different tones: Fish Indefinitely, Catch 5 Fish, and Fish Until
    Skill Increases.
  • The original fishing interaction that requires user direction for each try is now "Catch A Fish"
  • An Inspect Water interaction that behaves like the human version
  • Fish caught are related to the fish available in that body of water (i.e. the fish you see in Inspect Water). EA's cat fishing ignored the fishing location and picked a random fish from every possibility in the game. Thus you could get three-eyed fish from your local pond (and I did).
  • A skill panel with 4 skill challenges that grant bonuses
  • A "Play in Water" interaction available to kittens that starts building the fishing skill.
In addition, I added a "Drop Here" inventory interaction for all prey that directs the cat to drop the prey where it is standing so it can eat it. By default, pets have a "Drop Somewhere" interaction that directs the cat to drop the prey someplace on the lot (extra likely locations where their humans might step on it), but they have no way to choose the location to drop except dragging directly from inventory.

One final note: pets get very little hunger gain from eating prey in the vanilla game. The devs clearly thought of it as fun rather than a way for animals to feed themselves. I highly recommend the More Filling "Minor Pets" Snacks tuning mod

Another note after that: Pet routing to bodies of water (drinking or fishing) is prone to route fails. Oceans seem to work fine, but ponds must be deep enough and have a fairly steep bank or the cat will route fail. I have no idea if this can be improved.

As someone who plays a challenge that is mainly focused around colonies of wild cats and cat gameplay, I'm super excited to see this mod! I haven't tried it out yet, but I just installed it and I'm gonna give it a test run!

So the "drop here" mechanic works great! I've been using it a lot for my gameplay purposes. The big issue however is ironically with the fishing itself. I've been trying to have my cats fish and they can reach the water easily enough... But then as soon as they jump they glitch and I get a script error and they get reset back home. Sometimes after they reset they wind up with stuff in their inventory that you'd normally get from hunting, like a snake skin or even a goldfinch once. The weirdest part was when I tried to extend the "fish a while" to say until they gain a new skill level... but even after they glitched back home and started interacting with other cats and sleeping, they kept gaining more fishing skill.
I've tried with cats of different fishing skill, different locations, and it still happens. Its a shame, because I really love the concept of this mod! I love cat-based gameplay!

This is fantastic! If at any stage you get the chance, making a "fighting skill" for cats would be incredible for me!
I mostly use the Sims 3 to play the Warrior Cats challenge, so the additional skills are a godsend.

Funny you should say that!

I'm working on Fighting right now. It's more complicated than fishing -- it involves wounds and possible death (configurable). I got into a tangle with the weird Attack interaction from cats to humans for a while, but now I'm back at it.

I also have a larger project that is specifically for Warrior Cats involving two skills (Medicine Cat and Herb Lore ala Gardening). The Herb Lore is essentially done, but Medicine Cat has to hold on things like Fighting so that there is something to cure. I also plan for it to have a simple apprentice mechanic that allows an adult cat to pick a kitten to teach their skills to.

You're the second person to report this. I had several testers, and the mod seemed to work fine. Is there any chance you have ErrorTrap installed and can see an error message that goes with that reset?

Also, is it happening with Fish a While, Catch a Fish, or both?

Thirdly, I did upload a fix on June 21 for an issue that would have caused problems in non-English games. Be sure you have that one.

Yeah, I do get an ErrorTrap message when it happens. It seems to be happening with both, though "play in water" seems to be fine. Kittens just hate playing in the water in my game. I've been using the most recent version, and my game is english so I'm not sure what the issue is.

Yeah, a tester reproduced this from the download here. The ErrorTrap error is in registering the caught fish, so I'm going to guess that it works while the cat is failing to catch anything?

I'm starting to wonder if I somehow uploaded the wrong version Obviously, it worked for me because I took screenshots for this thing with cats catching fish.

I'm sorry!! I'm going to see if I can get to the bottom of this as fast as possible.

ETA: OK, I believe I have a fix. Some friends are going to give it a test to be sure I didn't break something else. I'll hopefully update tomorrow.

Just installed the update and tried it out and it works beautifully! Thank you so much for creating it! This is easily a must-have mod for me now, especially for my Reedclan cats!

Bet it didn't work so beautifully after you saved and reloaded .

That should be fixed now.

Hopefully all these lessons learned will make my next mod roll out more smoothly!
