Yeah, I will. I'll wait till my next free day to set it up. |

Hi, I'm still on the Roman era, but I'm worrying about the Dark Ages already even though I have a ways to go, lol. Anyone make it there yet? I read that you need to kill any sim that gets sick. I'm wondering how this will work as right now every single one of my sims has been sick and they still get sick every day. Anybody figured this one out? Maybe my sims are just sick way too often for some reason, dunno.

Anyway, the way I plan to solve this is to try to heal everyone with Grandma's Comfort Soup in the transition to the Dark Ages, and then when everyone (hopefully) is healthy I'm installing Realistic Sickness. That way there is a chance of sims surviving if they take care of themselves, but the odds of dying are still greatly "improved". Of course, I try to make them healthy before installing this so I won't have the complete neighborhood suddenly dying ![]() |
Thanks abcbok....I may have to install this Realistic Sickness thing. My boyfriend had the idea of giving every sick sim a one out of four chance of dying and then after they're sick they're immune, but I think that would be kind of a task to keep track of, I already have enough details to keep track of with all these sims. lol

*waves cautiously* Hey, all! I've been lurking for a long time; I love reading about everyone else's game. But I've rarely posted because I often feel like I don't have anything to report on. o3o' But something interesting has finally happened in my hood! xD
A little background info, since I don't have a blog: I started the challenge with just three families, instead of five, so I decided that the heirs of each main family may marry a townie just for the first two generations to be born. The founders are Gen 1. For my Gen 2 heirs, I went with the firstborn, regardless of gender. My skin 1 couple (the Allahs) had a male heir; my skins 2&3 couple (the Nanus) also had a male heir; and my skin 4 couple (the Unkis) had a female heir. So the Unki heir, Yinna, married a townie and had kids of her own. The time around, I figured I should stick to patriarchy, so I named her second child but first boy as the Unki heir. As a teen, the heir got into a fight with his younger sister and lost. This was my first fight, so I temporarily freaked out and decided to ignore that it had ever happened. However, after sleeping on it, I decided that, although I still maybe can't bring myself to kill him, he had at least lost his right to take over the family name. Who wants to pass the family name on to a loser, right? So I decided that Yinna is so displeased with her son's failure that she declares matriarchy the only solution, even though she has a younger son. Her new heir is her firstborn, the former heir's older sister. Forevermore, the main Unki family tree will be a matriarchal family, regardless of the "norms" of the other families or the society of the time. Branch families (heirs' younger siblings) may or may not follow this as well; I haven't decided yet. =/ I'm finding that the Unkis are my favorite family to play, although they're the biggest. The Allahs, the family that's going to be Emperor if their finances at the moment are to be believed and the second-biggest family, is soooo difficult to play, as everyone gets sunburned, and they're always getting in each others' ways, and they didn't even have a boy to be heir until a couple rounds ago. ._. Wow, long post, sorry! ^///^ I just wanted to share that tidbit - the first in my neighborhood that makes an interesting story. x3 |

This challenge seems so fun! I am in the process of making all my sims and creating it... wish me luck!

I wish you the best of luck, youcrAzy! It's difficult and long, but very, very fun! ^_^

Hang in there with the sunburn. ![]() |

Also, how would you integrate something like a clan that focuses on that sort of thing? I absolutely adore reading about your challenge. ![]() Yes, oddly enough, this incident has definitely made me like the Unki family more. xD I'm getting more and more interested in their story. I had the former heir move out of the household, and I downloaded a bunch of facial scars to give him as a reminder of his loss. I'm also going to try to pair him up with a girl from the Allah family who has an unfortunate bad case of acne. They're going to be my lovely little outcast couple if they fall for each other. xP As for sunburns, I'm on either my last or second to last round of the Neanderthal Age, so soon I won't have to deal with sunburns as often. Yay! ![]() |
@faerie6099 Your game sounds awesome! Keep us updated? :D
My firstborn generation 5 was just born, a little girl. When she becomes an adult, the Dark Ages begin and I can't wait! I'm honestly feeling so sick of the Roman Era I'd even like to go back to the Neanderthal Era ![]() I'm feeling worried though - out of the last 13 or 14 babies born (I counted but managed to forget, lol), only 2 has been boys. One family has a total of 7 children in the two branches this generation - all girls. I don't want to lose a last name so I'm a little anxious. I'm sure there'll be a baby boom of boys after this, but what if someone stops being fertile before that happens? Maybe I'm going to "cheat" a little and make some of the girls have bastards with their maiden name if it comes to that, haha. It'll work out ![]() |
@ abcbok, I have had times when the game only gives me babies of one gender, never as bad as that though. But maybe it was because I cheated then by saving right before they gave birth and left the game w/o saving until I got the gender I wanted. I try not to save for a few days before they give birth during this challenge since the temptation would be too big for me to resist if I had a situation like yours.
@faerie6099, will you be making a blog? |
@abcbok i am having that issue now, i am in the neanderthal stage and so far 3 boys 5 girls. For one family all they breed are girls.
|
@abcbok - Thanks! Will do. =D And I totally feel your pain with the unbalanced ratio of boys and girls. When my Gen. 3 sims started getting born, I had almost exactly the same situation. The current Allah head couple just this round aged to elders with 7 daughters and only 1 son, and he was the fifth child born. And until my branch families started having kids, only the Unkis had a decent mix of boys and girls. xD;
@Lisrouge - I'm not sure if I should make a blog or not. I don't really take pictures, so it would be mostly text, or all text for the generation that has already passed on. Maybe I should, though. I've been taking notes, although I've only been able to make stories to go with it when Gen. 2 started going off on their own. I'll definitely keep posting here, though. ^_^ |
@lisrouge Haha yeah, I've been tempted to do that too, but stopped myself, thinking that "their next one will be a boy", but it never is xD But umm... the next one probably is
![]() @youcrAzy That happened to me too in the first generation, one family had five daughters before having a boy in seriously the last second ![]() ![]() @faerie6099 Oh my, 7 daughters?! ![]() |
Has anyone had a problem with overheating? Well I do! I am currently on Round 2 and one of my families sons got taken away from social worker because he was too hot! I didn't even realize it until I scrolled over and he was passed out on the floor... she also had the nerve to take their little baby girl too. I was going to marry him off to one of the elves but its okay
![]() |
@abcbok - *headdesk* Don'tcha just love it when the little simmies won't behave? I mean, with a 50/50 chance of getting a boy or girl, you'd think they're purposely defying the odds to produce just boys or just girls... xD
@youcrAzy - Oooohhh, yes. Overheating was a nightmare when I started playing. I had to give them two, sometimes three, sinks, and a waterfall with a cool down option before they mostly stopped trying to kill themselves. Sort of. *facepalm* |
@youcrAzy , I'd love to read it if you change your mind. Yes, overheating was how I lost a few kids in my first attempt. I learned then about the no social work mod. It's much better now since I can even have a house full of orphan kids and not face the extinction so early on.
@abcbok, lol... I saw you finally got a boy. |

Sigh..
Two of my women got into a fight that resulted in one of them dieing. I had to switch over to that household and kill her ![]() ![]() Meanwhile in another family my little girl caught her first big fish! I am happy for her but yet sad when I think about wedding her. [EDIT] Also looking at the picture, anybody know good custom content for kids? The only clothes I have for her will suit the medieval ages, and god knows I'm not even close to there yet |
@faerie6099 Haha, so true
![]() @Lisrouge Yes, now the numbers are like 17-18 kids and 4 boys, yay ![]() ![]() @youcrAzy Just like Lisrouge, I have the no social worker mod installed. Makes my life easier, honestly ![]() ![]() As for the neanderthal CC, this link has a lot of, well, other links to everything you might need: http://historicalsims2.wikia.com/wi...history/Cavemen (It is ok to post links here, no? If not, I apologize) |
Okay, I wasn't going to do a blog, but last night, I got the impossible-to-ignore urge to do it. It's different, and it's not set up in a way to be updated very often, but it was fun to write out, and I hope you enjoy it. The link is in my signature. Only one post is up, but since I'm almost done with the Neanderthal Era, you can probably expect more than ten additional posts within a few weeks. (I'm giving myself more time than I think I'll need just to make sure... >_>)
Also, @abcbok - I know I wasn't the one who asked for the custom content, but I REALLY appreciate the link and wish I had found it back when I started playing the Neanderthal Era. xD *not much point now* |
@faerie6099 Great to hear it! I like the originality a lot, will be fun to read
![]() Haha, maybe you'll find some nice stuff for the later eras ![]() |
@faerie6099, I read your blog. Loved the story.
|
Thank you both!
|
Speaking of period things...
http://www.medievalsims.com/forums/...hp?f=101&t=5006 This mod replaces the interest images so that no more shall we view ugly anachronism! Although they are 'medieval', I find that they suit any very historical place without electronics and skyscrapers and such modern devices... like neanderthals. |
That is great!
|
@Nottakenaway - Oh, that's so awesome! I actually don't usually pay much attention to my Sims' conversations, but I'm starting to get interested in them. Once I downloaded the interest image replacements, I watched a conversation between two of my Sims. They talked about the mythical creatures, then I assume one of the Sims said that she was best friends with a frog prince. xD The other Sim then said something that I took to mean that he wanted to be best friends with the creature too when he grew up. And she replied that it would take some traveling.
*geeking out over the tiniest thing for some reason* Maybe I'm just so excited to begin the Roman Era that my excitement is spilling out into the little stuff. xP |
Jajaja... I read the conversations of my sims too and interpret it. I forgot to install the replacements.
|
Help! I've just started the Roman Era, and I have found absolutely no custom content suitable for my male teen nobility, especially the Emperor!
Also, I made a funny mistake. I thought that the Allahs had all girls except one. Turns out, I accidentally gave one of the boys a girl's name. He's younger than the Sim I knew was going to be Emperor, so it doesn't make a difference in that respect. However, this means I'll need to make some changes to the stories I've already written out... ._.' |
You can check here. http://historicalsims2.wikia.com/wi...ent_Greece/Rome
And lol. At least it didn't cause a big change. |
Thanks for the link, Lisrouge. Unfortunately, I've already tried it. =/ Unless I'm missing something that you see?
I'm not sure whether to laugh at the irony or cry because I did actually build multiple storylines around there being only one son in the Allah family... xD; Maybe I can tweak it without it being a big deal, though... I'll do some brainstorming tonight. |
@faerie6099 Lol, haha, maybe you were too used to having girls in that family
![]() About clothes for the rich teen boys, there isn't much variety so I use the one for teen males from The Romans - A Day Out by alexasrosa here at MTS. I use it for all of them, but at least it's something ^^ |
I guess I was too used to it. Let's hope I didn't make the same mistake with any other Sims... xD;
I stumbled across some Medieval stuff that looks (barely) passable for the Roman Era. I'll use that and call it good enough. In other news, I added thirteen new posts and a table of contents page to my blog now that I've finished with the Neanderthal Era. Some of the posts are really short, but some of them are pretty long. It just depended on how good a story I was able to come up with for each household. |
I'll go check it out. I have started playing round 3, but need to stop until I update the lasdt two of R2 or I'll have a huge backlog like before and never remember anyone...lll
|
@Lisrouge I update right after the playing a household, that way everything is fresh in my memory and it's really easy to write. It was a little slow at first, but now I'm really happy I got the habit. Plus, I want to read your updates
![]() |
I just finished round 2 of the neanderthal era and with the ratio of children im going to have to do polygamous marriages and relationships. Does that fit the time era?
[EDIT] ok so i have my first autonomous affair today! |
@youcrAzy The Neanderthal Era is really free and up to every player, so if that's what fits your game the most, go for it!
![]() ![]() |
@abcbok, I am trying to do that this time around. Before I would do all households in one round and then update and not know who the heck was who. It still happens, but at least I remember to do so and make sure to mention who's who somewhere. lol I also enjoy reading your updates.
@youcrAzy, Like abcbok said, if that fits your game and makes it more fun for you go ahead. Can't wait to see more. I have updated. I need to go back and check who's who and take some pics which are missing, but it's up till the first two households in Round 3. |
I just finished reading both Tiempo Pasa and Winter Valley tot, very interesting families and I can't wait to see how they play out in the future. Lisrouge, your sims are absolutely beautiful and I feel for Tuna and Clay
![]() Abcbok i am jealous of your game because it looks so rich in gameplay! Everybody keep updating your games please |
@youcrAzy Thanks! Glad you like it, I'm definitely continuing
![]() |
I have played R3 already and have updated. I'll probably play two houses in r4 tomorrow night and update on Friday.
|
Hello Everyone!
After way too much ado (hello coursework, I'm looking at you), I finished two additional modules. The first is a sizeable extension to Medieval and the second is a Greek stage, to be placed between the Neanderthal and Roman stages. You do not, by any means, have to play the new additions, but I wanted to make the challenge a bit more interesting and add some new content. ![]() Erm, um, the issue is that I can't post it here or on the FB page (because it's a word document / pdf), and I'm not done with the website yet... do you guys have suggestions? |
|
I love the new stages

Welp
So I just discovered that there was a 'subscribe' button for threads lol.
My TOT Sims 3 version has survived a computer crash, and with save #323 I am back into the game! I had to re download the games and some cc but my families are in tact and the game is now faster than ever. Also- I'm still REALLY BAD about killing off my sims, and I had a bookmark to the part of this thread where we were discussing disease death- when Sims get a cold what's their chance of survival etc. So I'm sorry to ask again, but what do you all do when a sim gets a cold? I think we were dice rolling... |
Frogsnack thanks for mentioning the subscribe button, I never noticed that till now.
Honestly whenever my sims get sick I let realistic sickness take care of it which isn't an option for you obviously. Depending on how often your sims get sick I'd probably go with 1/6 chance of death from illness perhaps with a 2/6 chance of staying sick and a 3/6 chance of being cured but if your game has anywhere near as much sickness as mine those odds may be too high. |
what era are you guys in?

Maybe I could copy that, or have the occasional epidemic where 35% of all sick die- like once a generation or every other? Just a thought. And it seems like to many of you are in Roman now, which is great! I'm around Gen 4 and 5 in Roman, some families had lots of kids when they were older so I have too many to play now, and I have to get back into the weekly Colosseum deaths. I tried a lot in the meantime with NRAAS mods that force marriages and stuff which was cool in the beginning and then ended up breaking up some of my favorite couples. In interesting ways though- the Emperor had only had a daughter with his wife (he was a CAS sim which may be cheating but I wanted a very greek/Roman look to the leading family) and his wife is the honest heir. Well no sooner had they had a daughter than he broke up with his wife and stole the neighbor's wife. They turned out to be a cute couple, but I still need him to return to his wife and have some boys... Anyways- does anyone else have pics of their leading families? I'd love to see them (I do peruse blogs, but I get lost in them so I don't dive too often, I'll forget what day it is). I get really stuck on how things look and had fun with the Emperor's home. I also LOVE the way that the original 20 X 30 lots I created still exist in some form from Neanderthal. The original layouts and garden placement and some still have their little fishing ponds... this stuff makes me so happy! ![]() ![]() |
Hey guys, haven't played my ToT in sometime but I'm definitely coming back to it... soon!
I'm tempted by the new Greek module since ancient Greece is probably my favourite historical era! I was actually going to play my Rome as very Greek-influenced, complete with some townies based on the Olympian gods. I was also thinking of creating an Ancient Egypt subhood, since there's some overlap between those eras. Was thinking it'd be matriarchal, despite the fact that that isn't very historically accurate, just for contrast. I'm not that into Medieval history so I'm fine with delaying it! Just trying to work out the logistics of having Greece, Rome AND Egypt. I like the idea of combining all three since just playing the same thing all the time gets boring fast, but then combining that with all the mythological and travel elements of the Ancient Greece stage, it starts to become a bit of a nightmare. I think I'll probably fuse Greece/Rome, since sims history does not have to correspond that closely with the real world and the civilisations had very similar mythology. I'll then use Ancient Egypt as the "Troy" second civilisation that battles "Grome", and have Egypt use the social structure suggested for Greece, with Kings/Pharaohs, Citizens, and Slaves. I really love the Mediterranean exploration mechanic so I'll definitely employ that, too. This is a pretty messy post, haha, was sort of using it as brainstorming! Either way, I still have to raise my 3rd generation Neanderthal kidlets up to adulthood before I get started on this, so I've got plenty of time to plan things out. |

I'm not sure if realistic sickness uses a ratio per say it changes the odds of a sim recovering and the chances of a sick sim dying. If I don't cure my sims periodically (or/and plead when they die) every sim who gets sick will be dead in two rounds. You may not want to set your odds that high. You could always do a test run and do the rolls without actually killing sims for a round or so and see if the death rate matches what you want. I'll be back with some family pictures of my sims. Palhoncho I think Grome sounds like a great idea, it would definitely add some more variety and give you more mythology to play with. I've long since stopped aiming for historical accuracy. |

Exactly, right? Ancient Egypt and China are so dang similar, and with China you could really push the Scientific advancement- they invented everything! I do wish there was a better way to have a writing career though than by using a computer. Everyone used to write back in the day (I've tried some cc but the've had errors, so. Somebody made this awesome scribble pad bookwriting item that kept my sims from having aspirations. I remember back in TS2 I used to use the Victorian Typewriter- did it come with freetime? When playing ancient simmies). By the way, somebody on a sims.com forum just said 'make an outhouse for depression era sims' and I got all excited, thinking of my sims trudging through the snow- I can't wait for exploration to do this! lol (also I'm sort of cheating on my seasons as I moved my families to the Island setting of Sunlit tides and the summer/ spring combos is what I'll be playing for a while. But I thought I might Winter things up for the Viking Era. >:3

Also, watch out for those community lots, they really sneak up on you. You may want to start some now and just not make them playable yet. Around the last gen of an era I plan on a slow transition so there's not a huge workload for me and I can still enjoy some gameplay. Well that was a long post so I'm off to sim again! (So I can go work in a few hours) |
Building in advance is a good plan, will probably get me reinvested in my hood if I alternate between playing rounds and building lots!
I love the idea of doing ancient China and/or more "Arabian" civilisations, but I have to admit I know next to nothi g about those periods and I'm worried about being unable to find the right CC! Plus I don't want the challenge to grow too large and out of control, especially as I don't have much in the way of reference points for some things. (How would China correspond with Victorian? No idea.) Might be a cool excuse to do some research, though! I'll see. Egypt is definitely happening, though. want to make those pyramids and fill the neighbourhood with many, many cats! |
If a person were thinking of doing this challenge (scratches head), what recommendations would you ToT'ers have as far as picking a terrain/map?
Size? Layout? Special Features? . . . just wondering . . . (tries to avoid twisting own arm) |
Pre building is great! I'll be nearly ready to jump right into the next era when it comes since I have most of my houses (well assuming I'm still happy with them) done.
As to the hood size it's hard to say. It all depends on how large lots you like to play, how big on community lots you are, how many families is a good number for you and what other features you like. Personally I play with small to medium lots, a small number of community lots and I love having a hood with beaches so I went for an island. It's not that different to picking any kind of hood IMO but I would pick a terrain that looks decent for a small hood but has room to expand. |
Quote: Originally posted by vllygrl

This is up to you, but keep it mind that if things get to Viking you'll need to make houses cluster around their leader's, and possibly separate Vikings from other people that you won't want 'killed whenever a Viking walks by". So it's great to have the option to sequester some houses off the main travel paths later if needed. Special Features? Something that you'd want to look at for a long, long time. Granted I don't play this as often as I'd like, but my game is going on over two and half years of playing and some 300+ overwritten saves. So if you want the Ocean- make sure it'll be there! If you want rocky mountain heights for a certain era, or a desert for the neanderthals to get sun-burnt it, just realize that you may be looking at it for a long time after that. You can also do a dry run with only one family or just measure out the land for so many starter lots for the first generations before you have to start (ahem I would never) killing them off from plague. I don't remember the TS2 stuff as well as everyone else on here, so I defer to them on unlockable lots- I know in 3 I can create a lot and just set it to 'no visitors' so I created a few ruins etc from an even older civilization that they can dig up during the discovery era- and HEY (I JUST HAD THE IDEA) what if extinct households become ruins that I can use for that later so I can increase gameplay and reminisce at the same time later...?! So excited now... ![]() I also made my neighborhood and Island theme as those homes don't change too much over generations so I can fall back on a 'leafy, natural look' if I don't have a lot of time to update them later. Well you can probably tell I just got back from work.

Hello everyone,
I would like to poll on a new idea. I am working on AToT 2.0, which is very similar to 1.0 but with clearer rules and multiple nations. As I was further developing the Ancient Greece module, an idea struck me that I should divide the module into two parts, each spanning two or three generations: 1. What the module is currently, consisting of a Greek mythology approach. 2. This part would consist of the politics from the Athens-Sparta era. However, I would really like to keep to 20 generations (as if we're anywhere near that :P). So, my proposed new generations would be like this: Neanderthal: 2 Ancient Greece Part I: 2 Ancient Greece Part II: 3 Roman Empire: 3 Dark Ages: 2 Medieval: 4 Colonial: 2 Victorian: 2 Thoughts? |
Quote: Originally posted by SwallowTail 87

An alternative if someone doesn't want to do mythology could be 'Silk Road Expansion' where the trade between tribes and highway thievery/ piracy first begin to develop, along with systems of writing and measurement. According to Wikipedia, the road began durig the Han dynasty in 206 BC (before Rome's glory days, but it was established at this time). Silk Road info There was the idea of an ice age early on, too- I think someone did that instead of the summer during neanderthal? And I think a gen from Medieval should go to either Victorian (because of all the inventions during the era), or you could split it up into Medieval/ Renaissance where the first 2 Gen (Medieval) could be science and the other two (Renaissance) art. Or Superstition under Medeival for those that want supernatural sims and the Science & Art develop in Renaissance so more skill objects and community lots are unlocked. Just a thought. You could also keep the way families develop with minor changes and just add more possibilities so there's not a whole neighborhood overhaul in between them. LOVE playing the challenge btw- if I get better at it TS3 style I'd like to get your thoughts about creating a TOT for TS3 too. |
SwallowTail, nice to see you're still around, and I LOVE the new modules. Now I really can't wait to move on. I might just have to shorten the Neanderthal Era a bit to get to Greece, but since it seems we'd be doing that anyway in 2.0, I'd feel less like I was cheating, 'specially since I'm actually adding in extras to include the new modules...
In regards to the Gods part of the Grecian Module, ChrisHatch on BackAlleySims (its and adult site so beware) has a religion mod (and a couple of Unofficial Expansion Packs that include it) that will allow you to have your sims actually worship the Gods and Goddesses. Only the first five religions created will be randomly assigned to new sims, but an unlimited number can be created, and you can always assign you sim to the Religion/God(dess) you want. And IIRC, God Sims living on specially designated lots don't age. I haven't played with this feature much since most of my sims just worship "the great and wonderful VioletPadfoot" (as quoted from the pop up that comes up when a sim asks another about religion) since I wasn't worried about religions just yet so only created one, and who else should my sims worship but me? As to where I am in the challenge, I'm in the middle of Round Five, still in the Neanderthal Era, and the first baby of Gen Three is going to be born in a few sim days. Two if I'm remembering correctly. My first batch of Teens is all paired off and married and three of the four girls are pregnant. The second batch of Teens is off at camp and they're trying their hardest to annoy the crap out of me. As long as nobody fights with anyone else, two of the girls are going to end up without a mate and depending on if there will be extras from the third batch, may end up marrying some of the plantsims. I have six families to play right now, and still have yet to break in my community lots as I think I figured out my phone issue, since it hasn't happened again. I think it was related to ACR and through careful checking of Sim Queues, I've been able to keep them from trying to ACR a sim on the phone. And now I'm off to play sims some more, just not ToT since I kinda need a break from that... ~VP |

I really, really like the silk road idea, actually. I would definitely like to incorporate that in some form, and will have to read up on it some more! I'm planning to release a Disasters/Miracles system that I stole from one of my other challenges, Sims 2 International (shameless plug :D). The idea is that at the end of every generation (or possibly the beginning, still working out the logistics of switching stages), your Sims randomly get a disaster or miracle that befalls their civilization. I try to make it historical where possible. One of the ones for the Neanderthal era is an ice age. ![]() I also really like the idea of having a Medieval and Renaissance period. The changes would probably be subtle, but then again, I haven't really researched into the social / economic differences between medieval and renaissance. I'll definitely look into it! Lastly, Sims 3! Of course! I actually think that Sims 3 is a better base for AToT than Sims 2 is. You can play as one family and still have a reasonable neighborhood population, which drastically cuts down on time played, allowing for more generations per era. I have been trying to develop a version for Sims 3, but honestly just lack the knowledge of what is possible with the game. I only own the base game, university, and world adventures, so I don't understand many of the gardening/fishing/travelling logistics inside and out. I have seen versions attempted to be transferred over, but usually they just wind up being copied and pasted Sims 2 AToT with a few subtle changes, so completely unlike the total overhaul I would probably write. If you have suggestions for the challenge or any tips, I would love to talk more about it and eventually write a Sims 3 version. ![]() |
I own all Sims 3 expansions, so I'd be willing to help with the mechanics side of writing a Sims 3 version - although I can't offer any help on historical accuracy, being an escapist and fantasy enthusiast.
![]() Speaking of which, I've started setting up my latest attempt at this challenge. It's going to be a spin-off of my tribal hood, Kulo Seeri (another shameless plug!) - basically, the Sims of Kulo Seeri are descended from Sena Yuleng, an alien found as a baby in a crashed spaceship and raised by island natives. The Test of Time hood I'm setting up will take place on the planet that her species inhabits. They're lizard-like beings that host a type of symbiotic fungus, living in a swampy semi-tropical region. They only come in two skin tones, green and purple, so I'm dropping the skin tone rules. I've also established that females of this species are larger, stronger and more dominant than males, so gender roles will be reversed too. Now I just need to actually create the Sims and start building. I hate setup. |
VT, I agree with you on setup. It is evil. Which is why I'm wondering why I would want to do what I'm considering when I get to the Grecian Module. I had the idea whilst half asleep, that instead of dividing out the current families into Greece and Troy, that I'd take a census of how many families there were (not hard with my obsessive tracking methods) and how many ended up in each class division, then make a whole new sub-hood with a comparable number of sims/families using a dice/random number generator to be "Troy." The point of this being that my sims are supposed to have crash-landed from a distant planet, so how do I explain a sudden influx of random CAS sims? My original plan was to explain them as survivors of another crash landing when I had to add them, But now I can get a bit more variety in adding them by simply making a whole new sub-hood over there to choose from, and integrate them slowly as the times progress, with the back story that a second ship crashed over there and these are the descendants of those survivors.. Plus it'll keep my two kings from being overly friendly with each other since I'm not using money as a basis, but rather popularity. Except that you know, it'll require a lot of set-up and double the amount of time it takes to do a round. But then again, I may just have a ton of families by that point thanks to T&Q and may just need to separate them out. We'll see. ~VP

Woah, I drop off this board for a week, and my Sims for a weekend, and suddenly I don't even know what's happening anymore. o___o
First off, I've had my first three deaths of the Roman Era. One Slave was killed in the Colosseum, and it took me more than an hour to figure out how to kill him because I was previously highly ignorant of how to orchestrate murders in Sims 2. And then, in the Eunki family (which consisted of the former (now disgraced) Unki heir (Cosimo), two of his younger siblings (Yaza and Carp), and a girl named Elettra Allah), a ton of drama unfolded. Cosimo fell in love with Elettra, who eventually also fell in love with him. Yaza became a teen with aspiration in the red, and she fought with and won against Elettra. I stared at my screen in horror for a few minutes before reluctantly killing her. A few Sim days later, Cosimo then killed Yaza. Although it seems justice was served, the loss of two Sims (in the same household!) was soooo hard. And then I come crawling back here to confess my losses, and I notice the modules added! Apparently, I advanced to the Roman Era just a couple weeks too soon; the Greek Stage looks like a lot of fun! I have actually added Ares/Mars to my Roman Era; he's the one in charge of killing any Sims at the Colosseum, mainly Slaves. But the integration of gods and demigods and especially the expeditions look like tons of fun! And multiple kingdoms? *dies from the complicated awesomeness that I now am missing out on* xD; |
Regarding the ice age it is kinda possible for sims to survive but gardening is nearly impossible as is fishing once the pond freezes over. But it isn't actually that hard to get enough fish to feed everyone for a few seasons. A family of five/six can survive on 1 fish a day (it's a little tricky if you play with miscarriages). However there are some other options for food like hunting, gathering or stockpiling food like crazy in the rounds leading up to the ice age.

There are a lot of things about TS3 that make it more difficult; the neighborhood pet adoption once kept m e from playing a Gen 1 family and they almost died out, as a result I uninstalled pets for a while, and the game metric forces all kinds of crap into Sims inventories so you can't rely on their funds to be accurate so even after playing this way for two years I've just ended up disregarding trying to move money around. It does get very laggy if you try to change all the patterns and micromanage the look of the town, and the game remembers family ties a lot better so CAS Sims by Gen 4 were a must. I play with suppressed opportunities on too, so I have to go manually marry everyone so that townies don't start coming in and taking over- so there's that too. Even with all that I still love it and I feel you can do so much more with it- the expansions offer so many other job opportunities. If you seriously get into the idea of writing one for TS3 (I'd gladly help out with that as I feel the game only reaches its true potential if you once you've tried TOT) please go ahead and message me. I don't want to cut into your TS2 challenge-writing time, but I can help with the writing etc. Enough things are different we wouldn't be able to copy and paste a lot.

I'm definitely into this as an idea, playing the same period for more than 3 generations already feels like too long for me, I get impatient! This seems to allow for more changes, which is cool. Plus I adore ancient history, so more time spent there can only be a good thing. Though I worry after 5 generations I'll be sick to death on ancient Greece! I suppose it depends how different Part II is, though. I always think of later Grecian political structures as being similar to Roman ones, though I'm not sure if that's actually particularly accurate? I know Rome were really inspired by the Greeks. Once I get to Victorian I personally plan to play through the 20th century, too. Think it'll be cool. Not sure how to divide it, though, maybe the 20s, then WWI/WWII, then the 50-60s? I'm thinking a lot about trying to incorporate the Old West into the colonisation period, too. I suppose it's quite vague about the setting and could easily be an old Western area??? Maybe I could use one of the subhoods from the many I'll be creating and have that become the frontier? I dunno! My knowledge of American history is quite shoddy and I'm more into British and European history, so I'm thinking I won't have all my sims go out colonising and a lot will remain in my "original" country. However, American history is pretty different to European and they'd be really diverging! It could be interesting to play out stuff like the piracy golden age, Stewart-to-Georgian periods, etc, but the challenge is already so complicated I'm wary of lengthening it further, haha! I think I have an issue with wanting to include every single time/place that interests me, despite them all being hard to link together. |

I wonder how my little sims are going actually going to survive, because I'm already having problems with children being taken away from the social worker(I call her the evil spirit) and heat stroke as well. It actually stresses me out sort of but i look forward to any kind of challenge! Anyways, the one thing I worry about is outerwear, because I can barely find any that would suit my era and I think it would just look plain weird if I let them wear a jacket and pants :O |

Or you could find warmer looking clothes which don't have to already be called outwear and then set it to outerwear yourself. |
youcrAzy - I love the idea of the social worker being an "evil spirit" stealing children away! If I didn't have a no social worker mod I would definitely borrow that idea for Kulo Seeri.
BTW I linked to some fur outfits that would work as outerwear (and do in Kulo Seeri) here on my Simblr, if you're still looking for era-appropriate outerwear. |
The main thing I would suggest for an ice age is keeping the fish out of someone's inventory. My first iceage lost most of the sims in the two seasons because a lot of sims died and more often than not those were the sims carting around the lifetime supply of fish. I think that was the time I ended up with like 10 sims going into the Roman era... so good luck but that was also the time I decided to do polygamy without a no jealousy hack... so you can imagine how that went down.
|
Out of curiosity, how did all of you make your Neanderthal homes? The way I set mine up was I made four tiny rooms, three of them just barely big enough for one double bed each and maybe a crib, and the last one with a sink, counter, fridge, and sofa. Since I think the original rules said no hut at all at first, I thought this was pretty elaborate. xD But now I'm wondering how the rest of you went about it.
|
I just made two rooms, later divided the second one to keep crying babies and tots away from the rest. One is the living area and the others sleeping quarters.
|
My neanderthals lived in one room but with a cordoned off baby/toddler area for the kids made with the floor divider fencing. I think my house was 10 x 6 or something.

That's also when all the super heros came out in comics books and that, so again there's an angle for some supernatural sims, but I'm not sure what kind? A lot of the occult type sims are more European. Another thought is to do a general 'expansion' and go found a new kind of country representing anything you haven't played through yet. Asia, the Amazon, Russia- I think anything might be game, then. But I'm waiting to see how my mood is if I can play up that far. As for my starter lots, I did a simple rectangle with a bathroom and an everything else. Once they had some capitol I tossed the beds in the basement. They weren't small lots as I wanted my families to grow into them, so I used the standard game size for a good starter home of 20 x 30. |
My neaderthal people lived in small huts, but i made each one different, like one will be a small shack while one will just have a set of walls not connected with a straw roof(cc).

And Faerie your blog is... dramatic. I'll have to sit down and dive in soon. Are there pics up too, and I missed them? ~~In my TOT, Sunlit Tides~~ Someone here had the great idea earlier to just keep a spreadsheet of sims names and once I did that I realized- the wrong family is emperor in my TOT! But I recall what happened, and it has to do with the color of the rightful heir and the guardianship of the current Empress, Lindsey (I've gotta stop letting my game pick any names). I also realized that Lindsey is only the Empress because she's the eldest of three daughters, there were no sons by her parents, and the nearest rightful heir (a cousin) is the darkest skin possible! So I'm thinking in a generation or so the cousin might overthrow the ruling family, just for the sake of I like him you know screw historical accuracy. So here's Yafeu and Nadia his mother, the last of who would become slaves (Fahadeen and Edifice families are Slaves) to marry into the Emperor families (Cove). Celestine Cove married Nadia Fahadeena, had Yafeu and Yafeu found Floriana Saulsoria (a patrician girl) and married her. They were a great match and fell in love instantly. They've just had their son Aesop, who I'm hoping is going to be strong enough to shake the giants of the Cove family out of power in the next generation. I just want a few more babies to happen everywhere first before I risk losing a whole family or two in a bid for power. ---> Also, an unrelated image of my favorite on and off again marriage, Evangelina and Trevor Saulson. They make pretty kids, but she's outgoing and he is shy, it's been a bumpy ride (she's the one that the emperor was cheating with, now everyone's back together with their original spouses. It's amazing that no one has died with all the disagreements there have been, no one fought...) |
@Frogsnack - Haha, thank you. xD No, I didn't start my blog until the Neanderthal Age was almost done, so I didn't have any pictures I could share. I'm not really a picture person anyways, though, so I kept the stories to just text even when the writing caught up to where I was in the game. There is one picture of the Emperor's Palace in Book 2, Chapter 1, though. =P (I think that's the one about the Allahs... *not really sure*)
Ahhh, your game sounds so interesting! And wow, yeah, it does seem incredible that no one has attacked anyone with all that drama. xP Speaking of "making pretty kids," I've been seeing genetics in this challenge unlike anything I've ever experienced with Sims. It's so interesting! One of my founding couples was comprised of a man with red hair and a woman with brown hair. All of their kids had brown hair. Then some of the kids married Sims with black hair, and some of their kids ended up as redheads! Also, one couple (Gen 2) produced a really ugly toddler (Gen 3). Her face looked like it was made up of two different skin tones, like most of her face was skin 1, but the skin around her eyes and forehead looked like skin 2 - like a raccoonish face. o_O She's a child right now, her face is all one color, and she looks like an average Sim, but then her younger brother had the same issue as a toddler too. *not sure what happened* |

Now, I have another sheet with a census of all Sims who ever existed in my challenge and any important details (like how they died/if they've ever committed murder), plus another sheet that shows how much each family owes in tax money. =P

Death by burnt pancakes lol that cracked me up. The official cause was probably either starvation (because the Wynns can't manage to eat sometimes) or realistic sickness. I love how you've thought out the line of sucession, I just picked the richest family, your sims are very pretty. I do have something similar planned for my game to kick off the dark ages but I'll have to wait and see how it turns out. I guess sims 3 sims are really peaceful being caught cheating in my game (hell being caught looking at someone funny in my game) pretty much equals a fight to the death. I don't use spreadsheets for my ToT because my sims die to often to bother but I love them for my other hoods. |

The idea to record the sims deeds is good too, but how long does that take you to update it all?

And actually, yes- there are so many steps to fighting, and I have several sims that 'dislike' another, but having enemy status is harder too. Even the old standby possibility of starvation takes twice as long (48 game hours really) so you'd have to have free will off and be trying to kill them. I've been bopping from house to house lately checking on all the familes as I've been playing with aging on again, and I saw a newly married sim making out with his neighbor's wife as a 'juiced' interaction (this came with university, it's supposed to be a drunken makeout). Both sims are just acquaintances, and the woman's entire family witnessed it, and while the children all got a moodlet of 'witnessed betrayal' the husband had NO REACTION, and went on walking to talk to some other sim entirely. O_o Then a few moments later the game posted a notice that she and her husband had an 'eternally faithful' reputation. ![]() ![]() -- Oh yeah and update, the alien baby Tekle was seen in public and killed this round. He made it to be a child, though, so there's something. |
Quote: Originally posted by Frogsnack
Update time depends on whether I remember to update as I play or not. Like if I remember to add a Sim's name to the census and marriage sheets right when they're born, it's just a quick few seconds. But if I forget for a household and realize my mistake, I feel the need to go back several households to make sure that was the only one I missed. xD; For taxes, I just calculate everything owed at the beginning of each round. Then, no matter how the families' finances change during the round, they still have to pay the sum I came up with at the start. I highlight each family's sum in green on the spreadsheet once they've paid so I know if I need to dole out punishments later if I forgot to pay or they couldn't afford to pay. I've actually also integrated tithes into my challenge, which is a lot more difficult than I was expecting it to be. I have to pay attention to each family's income each round, which can be simple during rounds where crops aren't harvested or the income comes from actual jobs. But for the families that fish or harvest crops or own businesses, it's getting to be sort of crazy. Like when my Sims harvest crops, do I give ten percent of the crops to the Church then and there? Or do I wait until they try to make money off of them? It's simpler to do the second, but it makes more sense to do the first in case they want their food for actual food, but then I'll probably forget the next round when they need money that they've already tithed on all their veggies. ![]() Cool, you play with aliens already!? I have heard that it's easier to get abducted in Sims 3, like you don't need a telescope. Poor thing, though. I assume you played it like he was killed for being so different? ![]() |

Oh my, I'm gone for a short time and all of this happens
![]() Very exciting to see the update to the rules and Eras, I believe I'll stick to the old ones (or my personal version of them) since I'm already more than halfway through the Roman Era... But I really hope someone else plays the new version and blogs about it! I'm on a break from The Sims right now since my boyfriend and I are moving abroad and we have lots to do. In a few weeks I'm probably pretty much back though ![]() |
Spreadsheets are awesome!
After a two month break I'm back to my roman sims again. ![]() In the first slave family I played, the woman gave birth every other day (total 4 children: 2 single births + 1 pair of twins). The second slave family, actually managed to only get pregnant once and the woman gave birth to a boy. But then my computer crashed and in the second play through, she gave birth to triplets. My first triplets ever at least, but still... XD I also started using ROS with lots of potentiallly deadly outcomes, but hadn't any dead sims because of it yet. I might need to start being more strict with it. D: |

But- I told ya they made pretty kids! She also spent an afternoon dismissing her lovers (she had four and a fiance besides her husband I was trying to get her back together with)- thanks NRAAS romance mod! ![]() This is why I'm glad for the CAS sims of the last round (The story was they were enslaved during the conquering of their specific homelands) so there are now more African genes, as well as Icelandic, Russian, Chinese, Italian and Irish/ Gaelic in the gene pool that is starting to show up. I let them marry any class and had them be 'trophy spouses' so if they end up divorced they go back to being a slave. This is what happened to Misept Sol, she married Sidhartha Fahadeena (he really needed to have kids but is so insane she was miserable). My romance mod happened to divorce them and I went with it- so she was dismissed and when Amadi Edifica aged up (he's only a few years younger than she), he offered her a place to stay. It turned out they are my favorite couple of the game now because I feel like she got her life back and I know it sounds weird, but I didn't know how pretty she was until she started smiling more. They're a really good match and if sims can actually fall in love outside their program, maybe it happened? Amadi is- Disciplined, a Bookworm, a Schmoozer, Coward and Athletic. Misept is- Shy, Natural Cook, Grumpy, Nurturing, and has a Green Thumb. She nurtures his cowardly side and his schmoozer trait helped her be comfortable and soothes her grumpiness. They are the best match ever! Plus her previous 'husband'- they guy that owned her and was crazy was too much older than her, now she has a young man who plays catch and works out with her. I liked them so much I gave them a proper wedding. So here's a million pictures (hope you all don't mind). Some of the genetics I was talking about and a few funny moments. I introduced freckles with Evangelina, so here they are on Sophus with Kale's Irishy hair. I also introduced reddish eyes with my Asian sim Mingus, and his son Ding (I couldn't resist a name like Ding Mingus) now has them along with the blond hair color that his grandparents have and it skipped a generation. Oh yeah! ![]() Thanks very much to lbsgirl24 for saying I have pretty sims. :lovestruc ![]() |

O______O Holy cow, I hadn't even thought about keeping track of their income when I buy stuff from them as other families! What have I gotten myself into? xD; I'm really bad about killing my Sims, too. I had originally tried to do the slave lottery with the Colosseum every round, which is every three or four days in my hood, but it hurt soooo badly the second time I drew a name that I ended up pretending it never happened, and I've decided to do it only once every other round. We'll see if I can make myself stick with that. xD; I guess the decision is as much practical as it is just me not wanting to be a heartless Sim-killer. xD When I assigned classes for the families at the end of the Neanderthal Age, I divided it up so that there were more families as Slaves than as higher classes. But then when I started playing, I realized that my upper-class families had tons of kids, while many of my Slaves families were more adults just now marrying or teens who had struck out on their own. So my hood is a little top-heavy at the moment, and I need to try to save as many Slaves as possible until they can out-breed the other classes. ![]() But the sudden growth of murders in my hood is throwing me for a loop, too. I only ever saw one fight in the Neanderthal Age. However, my first Roman round, I saw three dust-cloud fights. I forced myself to kill two of the losers, but I came up with a storyline that allowed me to let the third loser win. That victor was a monk, so I played it like, even though he had lost his temper, he still had enough respect for life that he wouldn't have killed, even in self-defense. He was a mean old man, though, getting into poke-wars and insult-battles with several Sims. So when I got to his lot, I made him "pray for greater compassion" - aka, I cheated to make him a nicer Sim. ![]() Ahh, Simmies. ![]() Awww, that love story in your game is sooo sweet, Frogsnack! :lovestruc I don't know if I would like that romance mod you have, though. I freak out enough when Sims get into fights on their own; I couldn't imagine how I would handle actual couple autonomously breaking up! xD |
Seeing you all having a hard time killing your sims makes me feel a little heartless - I've been very good at it all challenge xD Oops...
I only ever plead if the dying sim is unmarried and of the gender with the least members (currently boys) too... But to me that's part of what I love about this challenge: that it feels like I'm not in charge, my sims are, and I just love seeing their lives take an unexpected turn ![]() I totally understand you, though. Some tragedies has broken my heart, like the round when half the Callandile family was murdered (including the only son), the execution of Felix Jax who murdered a patrician in self defence, and when the little Nixeira twins had a fight where one died and the survivor later was killed at the Colosseum by their older brother. And Abeni who lost a husband and three children before being murdered herself... Oh, I miss my game so bad right now haha, maybe you can tell ![]() |
