Groundwork: A Foundation Challenge
Sometimes, it is awesome having unlimited freedom. It is nice – sure! I’ll make a giant mansion with a pool on the second floor! Yeah, I want that bathroom to have a hot tub in it! – but eventually, all the glitz and glamor of being uninhibited wears away. There is just no challenge to it after a while and some people, like me, get very bored…very quickly. This contest aims to fix that by testing your skills a little bit, and putting some challenge back into your game! The idea is super simple – instead of building your house to a set of criteria, or trying to stay on budget, I will provide you with a footprint that you must build on, decorate, landscape, and deck out, with a catch, to the best of your ability. Don’t forget that all of this will be done while competing against the other entrants! Much like the previous foundation challenge I hosted – “Building Blocks” – this contest will attempt to challenge you in more ways than just changing shapes. Instead of each round increasing in shape complexity, each round will bring a new hitch (with the exception of R1.) This might mean split levels, diagonal segments, basements, any combination thereof, and even more. Join in on the action and have a great time with the rest of us! *Note* This is a TS3 only contest; based on what I have planned, replication in TS2 would be very difficult / impossible.
Entering is simple! All you need to do is download the attached file labeled "Round 1" and complete it. Once you've done that, take the required screenshots (posted above) and some bonus point screen shots (also above) and make an awesome post showing your entry off!Since entry rounds are normally longer than the subsequent rounds, you will have 14 days to complete your lot and enter it. After those two weeks, the judges and I will close off entries, give you the next foundation, start scoring your previous round, and post the scores up for everyone to see! If you'd like to be a judge, all you need to do is post your interest, say a few qualifications (like how awesome you are, any other contests you might have participated in, other things you've judged, etc.) and I'll let you know if we need you or not! I'd like to have a cap of five judges, unless there are a large amount of entrants. Round 1 over! SCORES Round 2 over! SCORES Round 3 over! SCORES Round 4 over! SCORES Here is a list of scored contestants and their entries: Here is a list of late-comers who still made wonderful entries. They will not be scored, but check them out anyway!
Here is a list of judges and stuff: 1 - Qbuilderz 2 - PlayinSafe 3 - Seemyu 4 - TVRdesigns 5 - BlakeS5678 6 - GigaRevival The judges scores will be kept anonymous through the whole competition so you guys don't attack them. Much like last time, they will be assigned a color on a Google docs sheet, they'll fill out the scores, the averages will be calculated and posted here on this post. Last time, it was a bit messy, and I aim to keep it simple and easy to do this time around for both the participants and the contestants. Answered Questions Participant Resources ModYourPanties -- You can use this site to host images as long as you have an MTS account. Advice on Picture Taking -- A hint from AdonisPluto on taking grid-free pictures. Armiel's Builder's Island -- A flat, quick loading world that makes the challenge lots easy to access. The Building Blocks Foundation Challenge Thread -- Can be used for some quick ideas and as a guide to see what's to come. vB Code List -- Learn some stuff to make your post nice and tidy. Additional Credits: Entrants to my previous challenge -- you guys were awesome! The creators and their intellectual property I used to make the banners up there ^^^ |

Checking in, everybody. I just need to find where I put that first foundation file and we can get this started :D
|
Hey is this for sims2 and 3? or just sims3?

ok, but it's not very clear from your blurb which game it's for. Pity cos it looks like fun but i'm a sims 2 builder.
|
I apologize once again for misleading you -- I have updates the title and first paragraph to be more clear to avoid this from happening again
|
That is a shame, was hoping it was going to be sims 2 as well!
|
Ooo! This looks like fun! I'd love to be a judge! Since my contest just ended, I have free space to do so!
|
Hey Q! Sounds great!
If you need another judge, please sign me up. Qualifications: judge [Building Blocks] & participated in at least 2 other contest PS- I love that you used pics from previous contest entries. That's really nice! |
I'm certain it's just me being dim because it's way past my bed time already but I'm not seeing the attachment :/ Sounds fun, I'll need to see if I can squeeze in some time somewhere to give it a shot
|
You're not all dim, missroxor. The foundation file's hiding from Q (post #3).
|
Haha, so I was being a little dim then Thanks for pointing that out, I must've just read the checking in bit and skimmed past the rest of that post
|
Goddamnit! I could've sworn...ugh.
Give me 5 minutes, I need to switch computers. Edit -- it is up! Now, I'mma go advertise a bit |
Hey Q, I'll put my name in for judge. Obviously if we have to list qualifications... haha. I dunno. I build them? Pretty well, I would think.
|
Does round 1 have a particular theme? If so, I must have missed it. If not, then I take it this is just "build on this foundation", correct?
|

Excellent, thank you!

I think I might be on the slow side when I ask this: are things from the expansion packs allowed to be used?
|

I know this is a really long shot, and it's unlikely. But, would love to be a judge if you'll have me. While I don't necessarily meet the qualifications I have been building houses for The Sims since 2005 and have experience, (I play The Sims 2 and 3 all the time to this day) , in no way am I saying I'm perfect though. I have ton of time on my hands and it really would be a total honor if I could help out.

Is this just a room or an entire house? I'm not very good at building in The Sims 3, so I was wondering how large and difficult it is. A picture of the foundation from overhead would be helpful.
|
Should we list which expansion packs we use when we enter the contest?

Armiel's Build Island is really great for building in my opinion. You can put down whatever lot size you need in edit town. Loads in a few seconds for me and my computer is terrible.

As for the picture, I like it to be ambiguous, so that way when you look at in game you have a "Well...crap" kind of moment I am secretly evil.

I think I already know the answer, but we can move the existing landscaping, right?
|
Lol okay. Another quick question, how do I place the lot? Will it just place along a road? Or do I place it over an existing bare lot? I've never quite figured out placing lots in Sims 3. They always seem to be at an angle to the road. Also will this work when I don't have the latest patch? Or should I just tell it to update?
|
Quote: Originally posted by Jaguwar

If should work just fine without the patch (I don't believe I am patched to the latest version) and you can do it either way! You can either go into edit town mode and plop down a 2x3 lot, then place the foundation lot on that empty slot, or you can find an existing 2x3 house, delete it, and put down the foundation in that space. |
So I'm not very good at building and I've had this problem before but i can never figure out how to fix it...the lot that i selected i guess is higher than the original foundation template... but the console command that is supposed to fix it doesn't do anything at all when i put it in...can anyone help me lift it up from its sunken in state or should i just try and find a plot that it doesn't sink into? Not even sure if i should ask about it here..
|
Oh my gosh, I'm so happy this is running during one of my more active simming periods! For the sake of a challenge I actually practiced house building with the last contest's foundations and rules.
A few questions though... what are the limits on landscaping? Are we allowed to do pools, fountains, boats, etc? And does the lot need to be the same size, or can it be bigger? And is this limited to houses or can we make community lots as well? |
So...if you can't place extra foundations, does that mean no features such as gazebos? Just curious...probably a dumb question :P.
|

Use the cheat "Setimportedterrainoffset [value]" to raise the lot up and down. This happened to a few others, too. I built the lot in Armiel's builder's island, so maybe try downloading that and plaing the lot there? I don't know if it will help or not, but it may be worth a shot.
Quote: Originally posted by Aree
No limit on landscaping, provided it doesn't change the height of the foundation (no raising or lowering the terrain around the edges of the foundation, this includes ponds) The lot needs to remain on a 2x3 plot in the interest of keeping a standard across the competition, and if you want to do a community lot, that'd be awesome! I know Llamaforever made some awesome clubs last contest! |
Quote: Originally posted by Rin_of_Water
Well, this is tricky. You can have a gazebo (off foundation) as long as it doesn't expand livable space. If it is just a couple chairs and more along the lines of landscaping, then that is perfect. If you're using it as an outdoor kitchen or something that serves a large function, then no. |
Quote: Originally posted by QBUILDERZ
Thank you. That's helpful! On another note, I'm having technical difficulties. When I import the lot into a world, the terrain level is way below the street level. When I look at the thumbnail picture, the lot looks like it's supposed to be flat. I play the game with several mods installed, so could that cause it? |
Hello! Well I saw this contest and saw it very interest and I instantly started on building
So here's my entry Ill call it "Belinda GreenWork" WARNING: Pic Heavy |
Rin there is a cheat to fix it, but it depends on the world you play in
setimprtedterrainoffset [value] The value is tricky, it depends on the world you are playing. Example, Armiel's finnington. I got it to work with the value at 3.55. Now onto my question, does the house have to be functional? As in sims should be able to live in the thing? |
Quote: Originally posted by levini
The lot doesn't need to be functional / support a sim, but it should be mostly route-able at least. Armiel did an "unfinished" house last round, which was partially capable of housing a sim, but it still looked awesome and was route-able. So, no, it doesn't need to support a sim, even if it is preferable. If you can make something awesome, but rundown or something like that, I'm all for it. |
I'm assuming it doesn't matter which way round the lot goes since you didn't post a pic with the front annotated?
I had the sinking lot thing too. The easiest way to fix it (since it's only an empty lot) is to delete the plants, set CFE false, hit flatten lot then re-size the foundation back to it's original height. It's a lot quicker than faffing about trying to guess the exact number :D ETA: Remember to move the trash can and mailbox before you flatten the lot or you'll have to dig them out again |

It is 12:40 am here and I work at 6:00 am, but tomorrow I am going to update the main post with a "questions" section. That way I can move all answered questions there, as well as post the fix for this. It seems to be occurring to a bunch of people, so I feel it should be made more prominent. This is a much quicker solution, though, for those who know CFE. |
I do have another question. you did say no liveable space can be made outside, but would having a small grill or a clothesline break the rules?
|
Quote: Originally posted by Rin_of_Water
A few of us are having the problem of the sunken lot. I found that downloading and using Armiel's Builders Island somewhat helpful - I ended up with slightly raised terrain instead of sunken terrain in the end. |
Quote: Originally posted by levini
That does not break the rules -- having a seating area on a back patio, or a grill, or a gaage for just a car are all fine. What you can't have are garages that function as pool houses or bars, you can't make that grill be an out-door kitchen, etc. |
I have never done a sims 3 contest or in fact made a full house in sims 3, but I'm going to do this because it's summer and why the hell not?
|

I can't figure out how to resize the height of the foundation back to normal. I was able to flatten the lot using the CFE cheat, do I use lower terrain to get the foundation back to normal or something else? tried lowering the terrain under the foundation but it didn't fix the problem
|

With CFE set to false and the lot flattened build one square of foundation somewhere away from the house foundation (just so you don't forget which one you added). Then with the level terrain tool selected click and hold down on top of your one square of foundation and drag across the top of the house foundation. You should see lots of highlighted green squares then when you release the house foundation will be the same height as your one square of foundation. Hope that helps |
If I can get motivated enough then I think I'll join in with this.
|
@ Bhanse. While your pictures are lovely, I'm going to request you please paste the IMG code onto this thread to make it a whole lot easier for the judges to score. Scrolling down the page is a lot easier than clicking each individual link. Thank you.
|
For those having issues with placing the lot (with raised or lowered terrain), go to edit town mode, go to place the lot so you can see whether it will be raised or lowered, and then cancel out of it. Then press **Control(Command if you're on a Mac)+Shift+C**, which brings up the cheat menu.
Enter the following. "SetImportedTerrainOffset (value)" without the " marks and substitute (value) for a number. After you've placed the lot, check if the elevation is what you want before you press OK. If not, cancel and change the value you put in. Positive numbers raise the lot and negative numbers lower it. If you want to get it even more exact, use decimals. |

Quote: Originally posted by elegant rubble
When you write a response, there is a "Manage Attachments" section at the bottom of the page. Alternatively, since you have an account, you can use this website: Modyourpanties.com To host your images, and post them inline without going through the hassle of attaching them. I recommend Modyourpanties as the size limit is larger as well. It is a very good tool to use |

To insert picures: 1. Go to photobucket or wherever you usually upload pictures. Personally, I use MYP because it requires no registration if you have a MTS account you're logged into. 2. Copy IMG by selecting all of the IMG and hitting ctrl+c 3. Paste into thread by hitting ctrl+v 4. Admire your wonderful pictures as well as my tutorial. *Optional* EDIT: Looks like QBUILDERZ beat me to it. |
--THE FIRST POST HAS BEEN UPDATED--
I have included the answers asked as well as a few resources. Figured what better place to put them than in the first post?! |

Beginner's Luck
Hi
I am lousy with building anything so I thought I will give this a go. So count me in lol cheers |
Roughly how long will we have for each subsequent stage of the competition? I do mean roughly. I'm away for four days in a couple of weeks, so I wondered if it would likely still be possible to participate...

It would be very possible. Each round is two weeks and you can whip out a house in a day, easily if you're determined. EDIT: QBUILDERZ beat me to it again! Darn slow page refreshing! :D |

A snapshot in time of an old London back street, featuring Mrs Miggins's Bread and Pie Emporium.

|
i saw someone ask if pools away from the foundation were allowed but i didnt see if there was a responce, are pools not allowed away from the foundation?
|
Just a quick question - would it make life easier if we enclosed our pics in spoilers? It wont take a moment to change my entry if it's preferred that way.

Groundwork Entry One: Aurora Abode
Warning: Very large images. All are within individual spoiler tags. Aurora Abode is a miniature modern mansion designed for this year's most eligible bachelor or bachelorette. Featuring a large kitchen, high-end television and large bedroom with a sitting area, this home is a single sim's dream. Ignore fountain on the extra Front Yard shot and the floor plan shots. Actual lot has no fountain. |

when i saw this , all i tought was that i was going to enter to this contest , but when i tried to install the sim3 archive ( the lot) , it jumped a message saying that i have to update my game in order to use it , but sincerely , i have so many bad experiences with updating , so i tought that i can just simply build the basement , i mean , like trying to copy the basement just as i saw it on pictures , pls , i need help :c |

I would like to participate, but my game never updated past Generations... IDK what, is due to the fact I own the pre-order edition that depends on the EA download manager to update... Can anyone help me?
|
Okay back again with another silly question -you can tell I don't play Sims 3 very much. I've also had heaps on my plate, so we'll see if I make the deadline, I have to make my round 3 deadline on the Sims 2 Build A Business contest yet...
So dumb question-How do install a lot on Sims 3? |
Quote: Originally posted by joandsarah77

That sounds easy. Thanks. It says it has to update my game so I'll cross my fingers on that one.

Is anyone else having problems with the leveling of the lot. Mine is sunk into the ground.
|
Jerman: There were a couple of solutions to that problem posted on the previous page.

Strictly for Singles, 1BR+1BA
As the name says, this house is made for only one sim. Situated at the outskirts of Sunset Valley, this place is perfect for a genius and loner sim who wishes to live away from the noise of downtown while searching wisdom within. The main feature of this house is an attic which functions as a studying hub, leading to a balcony which provides a broad view of Sunset Valley, along with a telescope for a better view or a stargazing buddy at night. No custom content is used. :D |
What! Can't I change the height of the foundation? WOW that's just so last year! haha, with patch 1,55 that's one of the interesting features, and I can't be up to date Unless you're actually talking about lifting the foundation itself.
I used "SetImportedTerrainOffset 5", It's not totally level, but I decided I could live with it. That's if it's same for everybody |

Out of curiosity, why isn't there allowed to be a fountain up against the foundation? As far as I know it doesn't raise or lower the foundation at all.
