This is fantastic. Thank you for this. Like you need something else to do but would it be possible to do this for the DJ booth? All the other stuff we could have off for movies and pretend like they're playing but not the DJ booth.

Is that right? SimPE inserts the last found matching resource in its filetable rather than being hardcoded to extract from the game installation? I don't think that sounds like a very good idea actually...

That should definitely be filed as a bug in SimPE (i.e. possible propagation of defects when you use clone).

Well it depends why someone would have Downloads in the filetable. I did it so as to get them showing in the Object Workshop - yet they don't. I never bothered to untick Downloads. Though it also affects things like GUID scanner doesn't it?

I know PJSE does show the hacked versions instead of the original code when you have a folder or package in your packages.txt but that's supposed to be for people who know why they are taking the deliberate step of including those packages. For example I might be writing a new object that needs some global patch in order to work and then of course I want *my* version showing. At least that's how it was working last time I discussed it with Peter. All this is so complicated!

But definitely object workshop if it's offering a Maxis original object in its selection tree should make sure that the user gets nothing but original resources to go with it.

I'm having troubles with some of my hacks being discarded by the game, mainly when they are global. I got enourmous surprised that I was working with two independent objects Group 0xFFFFFFFF, not using any global and if I made any kind of modification on one of them, other objects that had nothing to do with each other, stopped working.
I cannot make any modification on the behaviour of NPCs. The game discard the modification and change the character nr of the NPCs.
It seems that lately much more than just irritation is being hardcoded.

Inge, Dizzy - This is something that Atavera discovered (and used) for the first time: his CustomInstrumentHack contains BHAVs that are in the same GroupID of the various UNI instruments; and when you clone a Maxis instrument with the Downloads included in the File Table, the BHAV from the Hack are included in the clone.
I don't see it as a "bug", because it's the very same behaviour of the game itself (everything in the Downloads overrides the original BHAVs from the game files; and the BHAVs from the newer EPs override the ones from older EPs).
The Downloads are treated by SimPE the same way it treats the EPs: if you don't deactivate the EPs/CEP/Downloads, the BHAVs contained in the EPs/Downloads (as well as the GMND and MMAT contained in the CEP) are included in the clone.
However, if you think this should be brought to Quaxi's attention, you could suggest him to put it as an option (for example, moving the "Downloads" checkbox from the actual filetable to the upper panel, where are the EPs and the CEP).

Decorgal - As usual, I play too little... - I examined the DJ Booth and couldn't find any effect, so I guessed the booth didn't "produce" flying notes and such. I'll double check it and, eventually, wil include the booth in the hack.

XPTL - I'm not sure to understand... Are you having conflicts between this hack and something else?

Well, my thinking in the matter is if it sounds like a bug it is a bug. Clone really should work only one way: the way a user would expect (i.e. give a warning at least if you are about to clone some mystery override of an object).

Yes, Dizzy, I agree that everything would feel more "natural" if the Downloads could be enabled/disabled in the main EP/CEP panel; users are already aware that if they do want, for example, to create a base-game compliant object, they have to deactivate the EPs; and if they don't want any CEP-related file (including the copyright notices), they have to untick the CEP. So, I think it would be natural to uncheck the Downloads if you don't want anything from there to be included in your clone.

As for me, as creator of a global hack, I can't do anything more than warning people about the risks, putting a bold text on top of my post; which I'm going to do right now

I myself think it is very helpful to include certain things a global mod does when cloning an object with the downloads folder included (or better: an extra folder where you only put these things into you need for this one clone - and remove them after cloning again).
As long as *you* know what you're doing everything should be fine and in this case you can even explain what downloaders of your creation can expect.
However, both requires reading

Yes, it goes in the Downloads. If a stereo is already playing, when you install the hack, the notes will NOT be removed: you have to turn off and back on the stereo, in order to see the difference.

I never really minded the visual notes and sound waves... except when they're still present on wall speakers after turning off the stereo. (This bug appeard with either Uni or NL and I doubt it's gone away since I installed Pets, but I don't know yet.) I might use this, but I'd rather have something that just fixes the wall speakers.

Any chance you might include the dj booth anytime soon? I'm not trying to be a pest, I swear!
