Baking powder is not the same as baking soda or 'soda crystals' . I also think that people from britain use a different word for baking soda, to make it more confusing

Baking powder does contain baking soda, but also other ingredients. It is not really suited for cleaning. It is too weak for that.

Then those 'soda crystals' (sodium carbonate decahydrate) are chemically different from baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Former is strong stuff (ph 11) and should never be confused with baking soda. Never use this stuff for cooking instead of baking soda It is used as ingredient in washing machine powder. On its own it can also be used to clean your washing machine for example.

So use baking soda for mild cleaning and soda crystals for heavy cleaning (use gloves). So you could use soda crystals for your pots.

Yeah, it is very confusing - I hadn't even heard of soda crystals. Had to look it up, and there is something called that, but I don't think I've seen it (or not been aware of it, at least). Anyway, English as a second language sometimes complicates things...

I know the difference between baking soda/baking powder when it comes to baking, and there are a few cleaning hacks for baking soda (baking powder just makes a mess due to the other ingredients). Pretty sure soda crystals would be really bad for baking, though...

Anyway, over to today's annoyance.

A power extension cord in our living room took its final breath and zapped the internet power cord, so no net for an evening and half a day. Then we got a replacement cord for a day, all fine and good, then the internet provider decides to change the entire box. My laptop is fine, our phones are fine, but mom's old laptop - big, fat, NOPE! Works on cord, but Wifi? Absolutely not! Been trying to get it to work most of the day but no luck. So we call them, try, call, try, etc. Then I leave mom to her own devices for maybe an hour or so while the techs are supposedly going to fix the problem from their end (no idea what they're doing, but so far nothing has helped). Then we call back, I start up her computer, and...

(Big, fat, black/white/red warning after startup)
"WARNING! Have you done a backup/Do you want to delete all the files on the computer Y/N?"

MOOOOOOM??? WHAT THE *BLEEEEEP* HAVE YOU BEEN DOING???
Mom: "Me? Haven't done anything *acts annoyed*"
(I know enough about computers to not start a complete wipe while clicking around in settings, so it's definitely not me...)

I got it fixed (fortunately all we had to do was to click "no" but still... I have no idea what she'd done.
Wifi still not working, but I do hope we get it fixed after the weekend.

My WPM (words per minute) has dropped from 80+ wpm to just 71. I mean, I almost never use a laptop these days but still. Also I have to do my NVQ essay... I just typed out all the questions and there's so damn many... it took half an hour. I am mildly having a panic attack just thinking about all the work I have to get done for a qualification I don't need nor want.

What is it with wild life and my yard this year?

I was sitting at my desk watching a video minding my own business. About 10 minutes in I hear what sounded like a animal in distress. I look out the window and there is a red-tailed hawk in The Pit with something flailing around in it's talons. I head outside, the hawk drops what was supposed to be dinner and flies off. The adult rabbit ( I'm assuming it is the resident rabbit on our property) disappears as I make my way up the driveway to find what the hawk had; it was a baby bunny. By the time I heard the noise and got to the end of the driveway, the bunny was deceased.

WTF! Is this what people go through when they clean up their yard and want to have a peaceful space? It is a really fucked up consequence for doing the 'right thing'.

It will be fine, there are bumps of frustration with any project which is what my previous post was. I was mad about the people being litter bugs, I was mad about the bunny situation and overall was irritated with the whole thing. Cleaning up trash and dealing with problematic plants is not a bad thing. If we did nothing, the same thing would have happened as there wasn't a 'canopy' of any of those things for critters such as baby bunnies to hide under.

Since then, I've been filling my brain with little nuggets of information that can be used now or later. For the time being, scare tape and a owl decoy are keeping things quiet so I can focus on other things. Birds are staying out of the area as is the resident rabbit. He / she has been hanging out on the other side of the driveway where there is plenty of cover. If birds want to hang out, the backyard is free from scare tape and decoys, so they can go there.

As for hawks, I saw one circling my neighbors house across the street yesterday morning, haven't seen any since. It doesn't mean they're gone, they're just off doing their hawk things somewhere else which is fine by me.

Starting up the computer. Sees the AV needs a restart. Okay, hits the restart button, but computer is slow and for whatever reason the restart is buggy and when the computer starts back up the restart prompt is still there. Oookay? Hits the restart prompt again. I guess 3rd time is the charm (3rd time turning it on), because this time it works.

Computer is off to a bad start today I guess - but I have had to do restarts more often recently, and I tend to forget the shift-turn off, so I guess it probably was needed. Everything was slow the first time around.

And only got worse from there. Stupid thing slowed down to a snail crawl at one point (the usual Windows update muck). I swear, these buggy Win10 updates are getting on my nerves. But for whatever reason the snailspeed issue suddenly cleared up when I was checking something in msconfig, even though I didn't actually do anything in there. I almost imagine the laptop muttering silently to itself "oh, she's considering restarting again, I better start working..." (that issue comes and goes, though - I think it's related to the failing updates realizing they're not going through and finally stopping the process. The "look for update, try to update, update hangs for half an age, update fails" process is what's slowing down everything)

I heard a expression the other day that is fitting after scanning my local news headlines. "The pandemic isn't over just because you're over it." People in my state are getting the vaccines and yet, they are testing positive for Rona and spreading it.

As for non-Rona things, I finally figured out what has been triggering my asthma for the past many months. Not a official diagnoses, but wheat needs to be removed from my diet. I eat it, 10 minutes later it turns into a full blown asthma episode.

Due to the drinks I drink from cans, I'm considering buying a can crusher.

Because I drink flavored seltzer from the can and maybe caffeine free sodas from time to time, I may consider buying a can crusher because the recycling can is small and yet the same size as the garbage can.

I may have to anyway. Aluminum is much better at being recycled numerous times without noticable degradation.

@PANDAQUEEN Isn't there a can collecty thing at the supermarket near you? Where you get some money back for returning the cans? Or maybe a bin in your neighbourhood for collecting metal?

Had a bad hair day, no matter how I tied up my hair it was awful. Ended up wearing cap

@Noa1500, I live in a community that recycles, but they don't pay you for it. A truck normally comes around on Thursdays every couple of weeks to take it to the recycling center.

If anything, it's more to maximize space in the recycling can as it gets sorted at the recycling center because the recycle bin holds the standard paper, metal, plastic and glass.

We have a can and bottle return system. There's usually a machine in medium/large grocery shops, and you get a few coins back per item (thought that was common in various around the world by now? No?).

In case you don't know, if you use these machines, you're not supposed to crush the cans or tear off the label of the bottles (or otherwise damage them), because then the machines can't read the label and can't sort them properly (QI had a reminder about cans in their "Rubbish" episode not long ago, along with a bunch of other more or less interesting things about rubbish, trash and recycling).

There's (finally) a glass and metal return system in my area. We had a return system for those, but not one that picked up a bin (or some places did, I don't know?), so it was a bit "eh, don't care". We also have plastic return now, although that one is a bit iffy because you're supposed to clean out everything and take off labels, and *sigh* - I guess if it's easy and clean already it goes in there, and if not it goes in the "everything else" bin. There's also a lot of trash recycling going on apart from bins that get emptied, but people are varying degrees of interested, from all-in to "meh" (My family is somewhere in the middle, I guess - not stressing too much to get it perfect, but sorting when relatively easy and possible). But for the love of sanity could people use bins and not throw stuff on the streets - come on, it's not that hard! We've got bins all around, but people keep "missing" them .

Probably the fact I'm going through a serious withdrawal of lithium, metformin and spirolactone.

Nausea, shaking, racing thoughts, "wrekt" sleep schedule...

I don't see the psych pill doctor until Early July, the Friday after Independence Day. It's going to be a long fortnight before I get in touch with her again. Dr. KW is constantly booked because her office is constantly understaffed.

It has not been a good day. It started by finding our pet rabbit died during the night. She turned 14 years old in April. RIP Sasha...

It has been hot all day, so not much has gotten done outside. We dug up one black cherry tree that was growing in the middle of the driveway and created a new spot for the cypress we ordered. That has been the extent of yard work until later this afternoon. There is a breeze, but it is a hot breeze which doesn't help. I don't understand people that get into debates over dry heat vs humidity. When it gets above 80 degrees, they both suck whether there is humidity or not.

Speaking of the black cherry trees... my next door neighbor, the neighbor I don't like, is growing one these obnoxious plants like a hedge. So in other words, these POS plants are not going away. Instead, checking for these plants often throughout the growing season will now have to be part of the yard maintenance routine so we don't get stuck with them growing everywhere and getting too big. I'd rather have the trees I like using up water and nutrients from the ground than stupid plants I don't.

Yesterday there was discussion about a tool called a "Uprooter". There are other versions of this tool that go by other names, but they all work pretty much the same way. There is a clamp at the bottom that goes around the base of a plant, then there is a pole that is used for leverage. When a human pushes down on the pole, the clamp at the bottom tightens, then raises up with the base of the plant that is being pulled from the ground. You can see how this works and what it looks like here https://www.theuprooter.com/

These tools are not cheap, but if I'm going to be spending my time on black cherry tree watch because people want to be stupid, I'm not breaking my back pulling them up. Small ones can be pulled up by hand, but once the leaf branches get to around a foot and half to two feet, they're a PITA. That is how big the one was that we dug up earlier today; it was rooted nice and deep. It didn't help that the soil in the driveway has a lot of rock which makes digging that much more miserable. Once the rock layer is removed, digging isn't a problem as we have sandy soil. I won't be ordering one of these tools tomorrow, but I will have one by the end of the growing season for next year.

The only good thing that has happened today is we should be getting a estimate for a new fence soon. Right now we have a wood fence, we're not going with wood this time around. The price of wood has skyrocketed because of supply chain issues and other problems caused by Rona, so we're looking into vinyl. I'd prefer composite, but that is even more expensive than wood.

My father's been down.

Today, June 30, marks the 7th anniversary of my grandmother's passing and because it was his mother and he was spoiled rotten by her, he took it pretty hard that he went on and off drinking binges up to a certain point.

Seeing as I am close to him, it's heartbreaking and not to mention, he has knee surgery in about 6 weeks. Another thing to bum him out.

3 spiders, at least 3 isopods, a moth, 3+ flies, a bumblebee, a wasp/fly/whateveritwasbutitwashuge, and some icky creepy crawlie I don't know the name of in the span of 1-2 days.

I hate this time of year. Can't even have the windows open, because the creepy crawlies and winged annoyances think they own the house... A few of them did survive, though (the ones near enough a window to either on their own or with a little bit of guidance find their way back out. The rest... not so lucky. There's absolutely no mercy if I find them near or in my bedroom, because that's NOT a hangout spot for creepy crawlies, even though some of them seem to think it is ).

Bought a really nice shirt today but I need to return it now that I've tried it on again at home. The stitching on the inside is really rough so wearing it on its own is uncomfortable which I hadn't noticed at the shop cos I had longsleeves on. Anyway, I checked the label and found out where it was made, and that turned out to be unacceptable. It's definitely not socially responsible so it really has to go back. Its not about "oh let's be socially responsible, csr is so amazing." Its about knowing that certain industries in certain countries are pretty much human rights violations. That's not ok.

A posted a photo of my cute 20 week bump on facebook and someone commented "Wow so big, maybe you'll find out it's twins"

...What is a nice way of saying "I've had 4 f****** scans, it ain't twins!"

Why do people think it's appropriate to say stuff like that I now feel terrible about my bump. I know I carry big, but I've only gained 2lb in the past 10 weeks. I struggle so much with my weight, I never lost my baby weight from the first pregnancy - with breastfeeding and PCOS it felt impossible. I felt so good in my new maternity dress and now I feel like a whale. I know I'm being over emotional right now... but damn it I'm allowed to be!

In spades to that. There was a group of feral cats for years, I have a bird sanctuary yard and would chase them off. Then found out about "trap and release"; with the help of that group I trapped those 5 cats, had them fixed (for free) and returned them. Was told that would keep other strays from moving in. NOT. And for the last 2 years they have killed every lizard, many birds, and TRIED to catch the squirrels. I like cats, but not THOSE cats!

Take no notice of what people comment, I spent so much energy in my younger days worrying about what other people thought of me, or if I was 'normal' or 'attractive'. Now I don't give a shit what other people think, and it's much less stressful, totally liberating and less exhausting. Thank you. I usually don't care that much about other peoples opinions, it just hits differently when it's about my pregnancy. I'm not the crop-top wearing 21 year old I was 5 years ago.

Didn't really "ruin my day" (I actually thought it was hilarious) but today someone posted a meme on Facebook saying "Taking weekly covid tests when not showing symptoms is like going to the cemetery to check if you're dead", I tagged my sister in the post and commented "Saw this meme while taking my twice weekly covid test lol", and the woman who posted it screenshot my profile pic (which doesn't even show half of my face) and sent it to me with the caption "Ugly". She then proceeded to tell me she hopes I die from the vaccine (I'm actually not vaccinated against covid), hopes my child dies, that I'm a loser and scum of the earth. Erm... sorry I take 2 mandatory covid tests per week so I can continue showing up to my job?? Lmao. She quickly deleted all her messages when I sent a laughing emoji followed by "I'm screen shotting this. Its 11pm babes wtf you doing" I'm really disappointed i didn't manage to screenshot all her messages before she deleted them
