First published in Arts and Architecture in 1945 as a joint venture by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen, the original plan for Case Study #8 presented the house as an extended bridge jutting out from a cliff on a wooded site in Pacific Pallisades near Santa Monica - The building as finally completed in 1949 - the famed cubic, glass and steel Eames House - has been the most internationally influential of the case Studies - The Eamses did not create a rarified or codified style of design, but instead, , conveyed a consistent vision in which froms spaces and objects were transformed into palyful and functional systems of linear and plastic relationships.

While he had no academic training as an architect, Ellwood had been an engineer during the war and had gained hands on experience in architectural design working as a job supervisor and draftsman for a Los Angeles contractor whose projects included buildings by architects whose would also later be involved with the Case Study House Program, such as Soriano, Neutra and Eames. As a result of his untraditional education Ellwood believes he was 'never tied to standard detailing or inhibited from trying out new methods.' Ellwood's commitment to new methods and materials - his belief that architects must 'apply new machine technologies with sensibility' - is evident in his architecture.

The site for CSH #21 is a level building pad in the hills with a sweeping view to the south. The orientation of glazed walls is north and south, with solid walls on the east and west. The basic design element of the plan is an island core of division between the living area and the two bedrooms. By disengaging the baths from the exterior walls and facing them onto a court, the curtain walls were simplified. The house, surrounded completely by pools, introduces a new concept in making water an integral structure and landscape element.

This surely is the most famous house of the program.
An extraordinary view over a hundred square miles of the city of Los Angeles greets visitors to Pierre Koenig's 1959 Case Study #22 as they enter the courtyard from the carport and walled off street side of the structure. The house boasted Arts and Architecture is a 'free floating roof shelter oriented to an expansive and spectacular panorama.
