I hope that doesn't make things too complicated for anyone. The reason I've decided to extend is because several of the judges have a rough week this week, and my week is also crazy. I think we'd end up needing to extend it whether we want to or not, and in that scenario I think it's better to do so in good time and let you all know what to expect so you can plan your stuff accordingly. |
I'm glad of that. I haven't started on round 3 yet.

Would a default-replacement terrain (like a better looking concrete neighborhood type) be allowed CC? Since it's not required for a download (as far as I know??) I thought it might be but I wanted to double check.

I wouldn't recommend it. Yeah a downloader doesn't HAVE to have it, but the lot won't look like what you are presenting on their end. If I was a judge I would probably deduct deco-points for that, even if it passes the CC rule. That's just me though, no idea how judges would judge it

Round 3: Professional Paradise
39 Attachment(s)
I made this apartment with Young Professionals in mind - specifically my favorite CAS sims whose personalities, careers, and relationships I want to develop first before letting them go forth and multiply
apartment 1 3BR, 1BATH, 2WCs is made for 4 male CAS sims I downloaded from various simmers. They're all so handsome but I highly doubt their genes contributing anything good. Chiseled cheekbones have a price in sims 2. I made this apartment with them in mind first because I want to get to know them. They're the only strangers to me here hahaha apartment 2 3BR, 2BATH (1 ENSUITE) is made for my girls! They started out as a dice-roll-made household in Sim State University and have a special place in my heart. apartment 3 2BR, 3BATH, 1 Secret Room is for sim-versions of my RP and comic characters who eloped together - my future mob-boss winemaker and my friend's necromancer med student. The spare room is for their would-be inlaws in case they were ever found OR an unsuspecting roommate! apartment 4 2BR, 1BATH, 1 Office is for two pairs of my older, more established couples from my other comics. They're much older than all of my sims/characters and are at the top of their careers (in story) so it would make sense for them to be roommates with their economical and intellectual equals until they decide to start a family. Basically it's an OC housing lmao Anyways please note the following: --I used Maxis extracted craft-able objects: flowers and curtains for apartment 3 and 4. --All apartments are fully tested by 4 sims and 1 roommate (I tried with 6 at first but they all died due to vending machine madness) --BBQ is still weird. They'll grill on the rooftop but will eat in their unit. I kept it there in case the landlord throws a party. --All units are fitted with a dishwasher, trash compactor, sprinklers, and phones. --1 Burglar Alarm is at the elevator lobby --Trash Chutes are in every floor near the elevator --The Balconies outside the bathrooms is for drying laundry IRL or an outdoor cat litter space? idk. it looks nice. I only put a window there so its space is not included in the rent. Players can choose to use it by putting a door there instead. |

I made it through ~ still in one piece! ...and my scores will definitely be on time (now!) |
Dadgummit to heck.
I have a camera in that seems to do the job. All I had to do was fix the things I noticed in playtest, move the housemates back in, and start taking pictures. In the middle of making the last connections, my game crashed for no apparent reason, and when I got it back up, Nova Colonia was gone! I can still see it, but it's now got the Travellers in it, which means it has a stealth subhood attached, which may mean the game is confused about how to read it, because Nova Colonia was made as a downtown subhood, intended for attachment to my BACC in due time. Fortunately, I had backed up the original Nova Colonia before I started this project, and of course I'd put a copy of the building into the lot bin. But unless I can get the building Nova Colonia working again, I'll have to take pictures of it in the nearly-empty hood I also had in this AGS, without all the surroundings that I feel are important for ambiance. Plus, the last round building, which is a Maxified copy of the first apartments I built for Nova Colonia, does not have a Maxified copy in the lot bin and I'd have to go through it all again. Plus, my lovingly created playtest households won't be available to give life and interest to the architectural shots. And since I don't know what caused the crash, I don't know this won't happen again. Well, the last corrections are done and there's a copy of the finished version in the lot bin. I'll worry about it tomorrow. I'm too annoyed today. Hmph. Is it possible to delete a stealth hood once it's attached? |
Just letting you know that I'll probably post Round 2's entry tomorrow. I'm almost finished with testing.
|
I'm currently preparing my entry, should be up about an 1 hour or 2 from now. I have 45 pictures to turn into JPEGs and attach (I will attach less as some will be edited in one for the rent).
EDIT: Oh crap, I realised I didn't take the rent screenshots properly. I will post my entry as is and then add the rent pictures when I load the game again, OK? @gummilutt |
Round 2 -Cheap City Lofts
41 Attachment(s)
This apartment lot started out as a converted warehouse/factory on a 2x2 lot, but as I was shaping the exterior, I realised it didn't quite fit that description, so I just assumed it was an aprtment block built during the Industrial Revolution era and now refurbished. Rents are quite cheap but each apartment is fully livable, with a certain degree of comfort. Units 1-2 are 1-bedroom units (T1s) and the cheapest, in the 800/week range. Units 3-4 are studios (T0s), slightly more expensive, in the 1000/week range. Finally, units 5-6 are 2-bedroom units (T2s), spanning the top two stories, as would be typical in a building that has an elevator, in the 1500/week range. Thus, apartments fulfill the rent criteria (I was going to add a picture with the individual rent per apartment, but since other contestants have just added the rent as seen from the neighbourhood, I just did the same as it would be easier. I guarantee I didn't cheat ). I won't add photos under spoilers for each unit, as it would be a lot of screenshots - I mean really a lot: I reached the 32-picture limit! However, I clearly labeled each photo with their unit number and they are sorted from left to right, bottom to top, so you don't confuse them. Thus, the left unit in the ground floor would be Unit 1, the right unit on the second/third floors would be the 6th. Each bedroom (or, in units 3 and 4, as they're studios, the whole apartment) is noiseproofed, and after intensive testing, issues I found where corrected: I added a communal trash chute in every floor as the landlord would insist on using your Simmies chute instead of the communal bin and would stomp because the door was locked. Units 1 and 2 are designed for a Sim fresh out of university (or still in it, if you have a mod*), unit 2 more towards the artistic side. Unit 3 is for a starving artist (Caution! Starving leads to death and as such should be considered a high-risk activity. Proceed at your own peril. The landlord is not responsible if your grave ends up at Joe's DIY Repair Shop or other random community lots!) while Unit 4 is for a jock (I actually added a machine to build body, which I almost never do! Jumping rope works just fine). Units 5 and 6 are for two roommates, not really having a theme (though I would say Unit 6 is more feminine, as it has more space for clothes). Outside, the landlord has provided 3 chess tables for everyone, 2 grills and some outdoor benches and tables, as well as a nice grassy area with plenty of shade to hang out with other tenants. This lot may be cheap, but life is actually quite good. And our solar panels provide an extra 200/week to help pay the rent. Some playability "quirks": - Units 1 and 2 have clothes rack, but they aren't usable because of the bed. They're just their for decorative purposes (I imagined everyone needed somewhere to hang their clothes!) - Every double bed is a Murphy bed as to add extra space when closed. This means they are actually usable (and WooHoo-able) in Units 5 and 6, despite being against a wall, if you direct one Sim to close it, direct the other to stand on the other side, and then direct the same Sim who closed it to open it again. To get out of bed, the process is the same. Since these apartments aren't really meant for couples, I didn't find that to be a major problem, so I hope I won't be docked playability points there (if I am, well, too bad) Every unit has burglar and smoke alarms, as well as either a bin or a chute and a phone. Special thanks to gummi and the judges for agreeing to give me an extension in this hard time of my life, it meant a lot . Also, a shout-out to my mum, who kindly helped me both with my hospital stay and with the decoration of this lot. She was the one who suggested having clothes rack or coat hangers in every unit (even if decorative) to have somewhere to hang clothes. I ended up having lots of fun building small - really small, unit 1 has 49 tiles of usable space, if I did the maths right (that's equivallent to a 7 by 7). Hope you like my entry, though I know I do . I'd love to live here in my college years (1 year to go!). Let me know if you have any questions. *I don't want to use apthack, but I think Chris Hatch has a mod which allows apartments in University. Is it all the mod does (as in, there's no hidden features?). If so, that would be great, as that is the part about apthack I really like. Also, how would the rent work? |
omgosh look at all those nooks and crannies! great job @Yvelotic2001 it looks like a fun place to explore xD

I have my playalong sorted!
Thanks to everyones tips on how to reduce rent. It seemed the biggest rent killer is taking away their individual garden spaces, even if they were tiny, it saved almost $1000!!!!! Anyway, I have made these into the typical New Zealand scody units most young adults will live in for the first time after they leave home! These are modelled on my first flat that I lived in. It had no double glazing, no insulation, no fire alarms, it was made of block, and they always left one or two walls un-gibbed inside so you had a cold block wall, that in winter time would be soaking wet, so you couldn't really put anything on it (we hung a blanket across it to try and get extra warmth) They had no heating included, had to run an electric heater (I've been nice for the sims and added a heater!) we got power by the way of whats called a power manager, you topped up a card and had to swipe it and the amount you topped up would be all you could use, it really sucked when you didnt top it up enough, and it would run out and then couldnt top it up again as the rest of the pay went on alcohol!! The area we lived in was very undesirable, across the road from us lived the Mongrel Mob. Down the road was a kid that was always running away and he kept ending up at our flat, one time he stole my bike, called the police they had a chat to him and he told them he'd left it outside the Mobs house, they gave it up as a lost cause! We had 6 flats in total and 2 were in each row. We were number 1. Number 2 was a tinny house (drug dealers) before we moved in apparently ours was also a tinny house, my first night there I was woken by a knock at the door at 2am, was a drugged up fella asking if he could buy my drugs, sent him next door or failing that told him to head across the road! Number 3 had a really strange couple in it, number 4 had a lovely girl who was putting herself through nursing, number 5 never met them, and number 6 had a crazy girl who was convinced my flatmate was stealing stuff from her (she wasn't had never even been in her flat!!) and waited down the drive one night as she came home from work and jumped her and bet her up a lil bit! As you can imagine we didn't last long there!!! Anyway heres my scody flat, and must say, its a dam sight better than what I had (though if I had the use of cc, I would have made it really bad!) The only landscaping is overgrown, as no one wants to do the garden (true story!) |
Where were you? Hutt Valley or Highbury in Palmy? Or maybe Mangere. Haha.
|
|
@ekrubynaffit what an adventure! It's fun to read about it now but I bet it was hell while you were there. I lived in Melbourne for 2 years and spent the first half with a broken heater in the middle of winter. The house was insulated but it was still freezing so I cannot CANNOT ---CAN NOT imagine living in a block house with no insulation and weeping walls! Not to mention you lived next to a drug dealer and a mob across the street hahaha I say you nailed that round xD
|
Oh, no, freezing Christchurch. I've been to similar places. You survived - well done. And I am, right now, sick of winter in Melbourne.
Edit: I'm struggling with inspiration on this round, for some bizarre reason. I will need every hour of those five days. I've started building but it's a bit of a mess. |
Just to be clear, we have until when to finish Round 3?
|
I had updated timers but look like they flipped out and reverted back to old settings. Made new ones so hopefully no more malfunctions. 10 days left on round 3.
|
That's a relief!

And the drug dealers for the most part seemed alright, wasn't a meth lab or anything they just grew a bit of pot and sold it. The worst neighbour was actually the one in number 6, she was just cray cray!!! Had an ex as well who, while I was in this flat was a bit of a stalker and in the mornings I'd see him hiding across the road as I walked to work, or he'd be up on the corner waiting when I got home, that was a bit scary! Once I got the police involved though that all ended! In the end you can chalk it all up to experience and I now know what to look out for, for when my kids move out, if they want to go to Linwood will be saying Hell no!!! |
Are stair wall openings allowed? Technically, they're windows, so I'm assuming yes?

I'll have to start thinking about my entry for round 3 today. Luckily I already have a shell built eons ago ready for round 4

I am back from my holiday now to get on and finish my entry

Buyable reagents--are they in the buyable craftables/career rewards category? I wanted to decorate an apartment for witches, but I'm realizing I don't have a lot of options to make things "witchy," especially since I still can't find a buyable cauldron and pedestal.

Great entry, Peni
But now I got curious about Harry The Spotlight and his pizza loving friends |
Double and triple sigh! The weather has been a nightmare this past week. Been so hot it was unbearable in my PC room, even with double fans it made me feel sick to be in here. And when it finally started getting a tad more bearable temperature-wise thunderstorms came and caused trouble instead. Haven't been able to get to my pc in two days, first because of unstable electricity making it risky to use pc, and then internet wouldn't work. I am so over this summer. I'm really sorry everyone. I know it might not seem like it but I am trying my best.
Internet still very unstable but electricity is stable enough at least, so will do my best to finish today. I have a couple of more lots to go over for host bonus but if electricity remains stable I should be able to finish today. All judges scores are in so will go over it once host bonus is done. If all goes well might be able to get scores up before going to bed, but it depends on if I need to talk to any of the judges about something, and if they are available now or not. Will do my best to get them up asap |
We do believe you, Gummi! We've all been there. If your internet won't work and you're heatsick, it doesn't matter what you want to do online, you can't do it. All you can do is the best you can do, and that has to be enough.
As for Harry the Spotlight - I'm afraid you'll just have to imagine his shenanigans, Kuuk. I'm sure you can come up with good ones. |
Thank you for understanding Host bonus judging is giving me 90s dial-up modem flashbacks. Internet is so bad every picture I want to view is loading so so slowly, one tiny sliver at time

I'm very sorry, Ellu! I know how annoying it is when people get your name wrong. I'll be more careful in future. Thanks for getting the scores up under such difficulties, Gummilutt! I'm still eating dust here but that's okay - I made some calls based on the Nova Colonia ambiance and I paid for them, which is fair. The thing is that there is no grungy stucco without CC (and precious little with it), except a handful of muted neutral tints, and Nova Colonia's style is colorful stucco. And I am always reluctant to use the trash chutes because I feel like I have to make waste space on each floor for the chute, and then at the bottom for the trash, and that's just not something I like. Except for chimneys. For some reason I don't mind doing it for chimneys, as I did in 5 Calle de Residencia. I probably should have pushed harder to get everything perfect in the housemate building, but I'm just not up to pushing right now. I had a really good week the week before last, and then this past week stole all my momentum. I can see where I forgot a burglar alarm, and I probably should have done - something - more with the second and third floor common areas. But I fixed the blocked routing and the backwards stove and I have great hopes that my decorating and landscaping will pass muster this time, so onward and upward, and maybe I'll get a rush of energy to make a few more changes, take a few more pictures, and swap some out before judging starts on Round 3. It could happen. |

So I decided to try the shelf thing and it worked! Sims can use the counter and I get to have my clutter! Thank you judges for the wonderful reviews! Super happy you guys like my entry! |
Thank you for the comments judges; I'm glad you like my swimmable lake. I had fun making my cabins, but I've saved a half finished version of the lot so that I don't have to do the lake again if I want to make different buildings on another lake at some point.
The cabinets I used in the kitchen are not CC. They are the wine rack placed backwards with move objects, and for handles I used one of the pairs of bells from the holiday deco and placed them with both the move objects and snap to grid cheats. Are those the reason for the 0 under requirements, or did I miss something else? Gummilutt, thanks for taking the time and putting up with a slow connection to get the scores up. I hope it cools down for you soon. |
I didn't know burglar alarms were obligatory. I read somewhere they were not. The reason the trash chutes were on the outside was that when I played an apartment with them on the inside they disappeared for some reason.
|
Trash chutes are wastebaskets and aren't defined as fixtures for purposes of remaining when the apartment is rented. You put them in the common area, and they stay. You put them in the unit, and they go.
I don't think burglar alarms are mandatory; but I put them in every apartment but one so I anticipate losing a point for carelessness if I don't revise before the end of the round. Forgot to say, also, that the posters on the front of the tenement building are meant to be flyers for bands playing in the vicinity, slapped up on the front without asking the permission of the management. If they were intended as building decoration they'd be inside. It would've been more obvious and sold better had they been overlapping thickly, but overlapping those posters just makes them impossible to make out. I hadn't thought of using algae for weeds. I'll have to try that out. |
Quote: Originally posted by stitching
Oooooooooh! What a great idea! You should have mentioned that's what you did in the write up (It's the bell/handles that got me - if the cabinets hadn't had handles, I would've thought about the wine rack placed backwards.) Yes, that was the 5 point reduction. Since they are not CC, you should definitely get your 5 points back! @gummilutt - please add 5 points back to stitching's scores for me, K? RE: trash, phones and alarms - every judge is different. For me, trash and phones are necessary - and I will deduct for them if I can't see them (if you specify they are present in your write up, I'll believe you!) I also think every ignitable item should be fire alarmed - but, it has been mentioned earlier in this thread, that the fire department has ESP where apartments are concerned - and they will show up with or without an alarm. Burglar alarms are nice for higher class digs, and kinda silly in the slums IMHO. Just to be clear, I will not take off points for either alarm in this contest. But remember - every judge is different - that's why there are three of us . |
Thank you! I can't take credit for that cabinet idea, though. There was a thread on here a year or so ago where people were sharing build and decorating ideas, and I remembered someone sharing that trick.
|
Thank you kindly for the scores judges, I gambled on the great divide usage, and it only really mattered to one judge that playability was different, if I package this up for download, I will probably remove the divide and have rent go over 1K, as it was only there to keep that rent low. Thanks Gummi for reviewing all the extra stuff, I am glad i figured out what a full ground floor pic meant after hours of contemplation. I had no idea the cement belt would be offensive on the eyes! I thought about trying something different on the outer cover since I did majority bricks on round 1. Oh well, as we all know, can't be pleasing all judges every time. I'm done with round 3 and pics, it'll be a desert-y delight!
Quote: Originally posted by Peni Griffin
@Peni - Is that a random thing that happens? Because when I play-tested my first lot with wastebaskets, they were all there when rented and when I tested the lofts all the inside trash chutes stayed when rented. |
Did I miss the part in the rules that burglar alarms are required? I never use them. I always put smoke alarms, but hidden behind an appliance. And phones? Why? They have cell phones.
|

No. My second round had no burglar alarms at all, as I mentioned in the description. It's just that all the apartments in my complex this round have a burglar alarm - except one! That's the sort of lack of attention to detail that costs points with most judges. The trash chutes and wastebasket disappearing or not may be an example of glitchy apartment code; or it may be a case of the game working differently for different people in different set-ups. Who knows which is vanilla code? I haven't lived in a lot of apartments, myself, and then it was on the ground floor, but my impression is that trash chutes are a community thing anyway, a single shaft going through all floors so that all the trash on every floor is dumped straight down to the dumpster sitting at the bottom. Sometimes I put them on walls enclosing chimneys, with the idea that it all goes straight to an incinerator in the basement. |
It seems silly to have burglar alarms in cheap units. What's there to steal anyway? I rarely use them and only then in richer househoulds. I hope I didn't get points off for not using them or for my trash chutes being on the outside.
Most of the other comments can be explained by the budget restriction (empty walls, corridor to nowhere, etc). I can't tell you how many times that I made changes, removals, etc, to get the units under budget, which involved creating a copy, changing zoning and moving a Sim in. I was, in all honesty, fed up by the time I was done (and forgot the pathway lighting). Lots of apartment complexes have no common area and I figured cheap ones would not anyway. |
Quote: Originally posted by Peni Griffin
It's definitely not due to lack of attention to detail, I just don't use them. But then, I also don't have such a thing in my house IRL either. It just comes down to play style I think, but I don't think judging on that is fair. But, I choose cell phones in my game over the other phones, and the judges every round comment (and maybe deduct points) for not seeing phones in the apartments. I don't have a landline phone IRL either, just a cellphone. I understand lack of trash bins, which I have btw, you just can't see them. |
thank you judges! I wont defend me granny housing hahaha i have been looking to make a home for the aged and my round 2 lot may be a good fit!
just gonna add elevators and other granny things lmao edit: imma keep those trashcompactors in mind for my next builds. or at least some trash bins. yer right. I would be annoyed to go out to throw my mcdonalds take out every single time! |
Yeah, on the burglar alarms, I just want to mention that I also purposely didn't put them in this last round because it just didn't make any sense to me. I've never lived in a house or apartment with them in real life and it definitely seems like something only very wealthy people tend to have. I didn't see any mention of the lack of burglar alarms in my reviews though so I'm not sure if I didn't get points off and others did or if I did get points off and it just wasn't mentioned? I feel like either way it really didn't make much sense to have them in cheap apartments. I dunno, opinions vary of course, but if they are required it would be nice to have that confirmed. Obviously thank you CatherineTCJD for already saying what you consider required, it's much appreciated
|
Really, the way burglars work in TS2 is unrealistic. They shouldn't sneak in at night when you're at home, they should come during the day while you're at work.
|
Sometimes I really dislike play-testing, but this time I just want to kick myself for things I've been finding that I should have caught earlier. I had one unit without lights. One bathroom had bright green carpet, left from when I was planning the layouts and was using different carpets for each apartment. One hall lacked wall coverings. One bathroom had routing problems. Oddest looking mistake was the apartment with the painting hovering in mid-air over the couch - I'd been using cheats to layer artwork and I didn't notice the extra copy that I'd placed.

Just dropping in to say thanks to the judges, etc. Judge 2, I did have community bathrooms next to the bbq area, behind the stairs. It's visible in the required pics floor plan shot. Not sure if I lost points for it, but I did want to mention that I included it, especially since that was an edit/comment on my last round.
Speaking of required pics, I didn't realize I went over! @gummilutt, do you know if I had pictures that weren't really required, or if I just went over with my unit pictures? To confirm, it's 32 plus the front, back, ground floor of the entire lot, then a floor plan of each floor in every structure? And then, rent? So for me, with 5 buildings that would have been, 3 with 3 floors and 2 with 2 floors, that would be... 32 + 16 = 48 pictures plus rent? Or is my math off somewhere? About the burglar thing, though, I don't always build with them, and more often than not leave out all alarms for a little random risk, but if I'm going to the trouble of putting alarms everywhere, I just include them for completeness, I guess. |
A bit late to the party but I was on holiday and then went straight into two long days of a new job! I finally have time to sit at my computer and read the judges comments properly. Thank you very much for the lovely comments, I am pleased that you mostly liked my build I am annoyed with myself for missing the whole lot image as well.

You guys have inspired me... I've been working on a SUD Housing Project for BDC (BellaDonna Cove) and I've learned it is near impossible to get the rent under $1000 if you use the AL Spiral stairs! I'm trying to make the units at least 8X6 w/a loft - and the only way I can get the rent down is if I use Marvine's ladder (like so many of ya'll did) the space is too small for a straight staircase, and if I put in the spiral stairs the rent shoots up to $1300! Yikes!
I know if I made it all one level, I could do it much cheaper. But, I want a loft, daggity-nabbit! I think I've got it sorted now - 4 units with 2 single beds in a shared room (like in a twin's room or a dorm) fully decked out, with the rent at $945 for each unit. Whew! That was a challenge All this to say - You guys ROCK |

I had a vision of a view of birch trees from a common area and built around that idea. Haha - it wasn't so easy for some reason. Anyway here is my two-storeyed, six unit apartment block. All units include phones (two phones in the two-level units), trash chutes on the inside, and smoke/fire alarms. I have not included burglar alarms as I only include those for rich Sims.
Required pics Now inside the units, starting with unit 1, which covers two levels. Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Unit 5 Unit 6 It was very difficult to narrow the pics down to 4 per unit! Now for the extra eight pics which includes the common area. |
updated my round 3 entry uvu it's ready to go on the judges' table
hope you like it~ it is the only entry I really thought about as I have a personal attachment to the sims who will live there. |

Round 3: Roomie-Mania
36 Attachment(s)
This building has five apartments: one suitable for two people; one for two people or a couple and a singleton; one for three people/couples; one for four people; and the last for two adults not in a relationship, a child and a toddler. All apartments have phones, smoke alarms and either a bin, trash compactor or trash chute, and I've pointed out their locations in the picture descriptions. There is also a burglar alarm in the communal entrance, and a smoke alarm out by the grill. |

Gummi has sent me day before yesterday over Skype that her computer is broken! Unfornatelly I was not able to log on my Skype untill now, so this announcement comes tid late, sorry.
She hopes she can have her computer fixed till the deadline, so, for now, no extensions for this round. We will see IF she gets her computer to work by then, if not she will see if she is going to exted the judging and the round4. |

Otherwise if you have like 11 units and take 6 pics of all plus 8 PLUS reguired you would end up to near 100 pics :D 6 pics per unit, maximum 24 + 8 optional structure/or unit =32 . Naturally plus the reguired pics. At least this is how I understood it. I can be wrong and heavily indeed :D And as you have 6 units you had only 4 per unit. |
Playtesting and screenshot taking are in progress!

First of all, I am quite sorry for the absentee judging, ugh. Life right now... is easing up its grip on my neck, but that aside I'm going to try and leave some comments on things I have seen mentioned. Please do hail me if I am missing something!
Trash cans, I do love having one in every apartment - no matter where the trash chute is located. Something about walking every frozen dinner to the outside trash bugs me. Burglar alarms, in poorer housing no of course I wouldn't expect to see them. Some apartments look very nice from the outside, so I would just assume they would be protected, and on the flip of that who can afford to replace items if you're already poor. (I suppose when I check for the alarms, I check for both smoke and burglar, especially if the housing is nice.) Smoke/fire alarm or at least a sprinkler seem almost mandatory. Going forward, I will just skip looking for the burglar alarms, as it probably does come down to play style and it seems like a divided topic. Charmful, I am very happy to hear your flowers from round one had no wilting despite not being able to reach them. That is good information for me to have! HugeLunatic, I understand the cell phone issue, but honestly hardly any of my Sims have them. Eeep! So having them in an apartment when you're starting out saves some money. PhantomKnight, I'll look over your score notes on my end and edit that with Gummi - I'm sure I did deduct a half point and yes, they are there. Thank you for pointing them out! Please know that while I am VERY green at judging and having a seasoned keen eye, I appreciate the comments you all leave and will be more active for the next rounds so I'm more visible. Everyone is doing so well, and I am so impressed at the different buildings being presented. Well done, all of you. You're inspiring me to build again myself (which may or may not be good, haha). Thank you all for your patience with me. |
I'm pretty sure if there's no landline in an apartment, the townie living there can't be called. But I could be wrong. I often am.

Round 3: Roommates - Barracks for military sims
This building is based on several military barracks I've either lived in or had family living in, with the colours and materials used on the floors and walls influenced by those and by other military buildings I've been in throughout my life. The common spaces are also ones I've seen within the same buildings as quarters. One common space I left out was an eating mess/dining hall; every unit has a kitchen, and the sims can use them. I did include the club/recreational areas of a mess, with a formal section based on an officer's mess I remember visiting and one all-ranks game area. There are also some training spaces. With the sims, you may or may not get roommates in the military career track, but there are plenty of occupations in the military and several maxis careers can be interpreted in such a way that they could indicate military employment. I have no problem with the idea pretending they are military sims or using cheats, mods, or SimPE to give them a new career. Each unit is appropriate for different purposes (short term housing while on course, long term course housing, or long term postings) and for different ranks (length of stay tends to be more determinate of housing than rank, but officers usually have more space and privacy). Unit 4 is meant for up to 8 sims on basic training, either officer or enlisted. It's not too long a course, but there is little privacy, a lot of restrictions on time and personalizing the space, and daily inspections. Unit 3 is meant for up to 6 sims, of any rank on short courses or at low rank (jr officer or enlisted) for long term courses. There is some freedom to personalize the space, but the choice of blankets is limited to one of 3 and the rooms are subject to weekly inspections. Unit 2 is meant for 4 sims, in unmarried quarters for long term housing and at low rank, but it's a definite step up from unit 3, as the only inspections are annuals by base fire or by building maintenance if there's a problem. Each roommate actually has a private room and bathroom. Unit 1 is meant for 3 sims, either fairly high ranking officers on course or mid-rank officers staying in quarters for a long posting. |
@stitching, I love it!! Love that plant room and the themes put into each <3 Also at a glance I really like the way you put the interiors together, color, spacing, accents etc.
|
@stitching That lot is SO AMAZING! You can tell a lot of thought and heart went into creating that! I LOVE the fireplace mantle with the mirror and the columns! It SO cool! And the washing machines!! And that training area is super clever! The units and the common areas are so well thought out with all the deco and personal effects! Seriously, everything about that lot is absolutely fantastic! I'm so in love with it! :lovestruc

Sunshine Community Complex
Number of Units: 4 Lot Size: 3x5 Pandora has been seeing a burgeoning economy these past few years thanks to attractions like the casino, oasis spa, night clubs, and artisan market, so many developers have been trying to build places for a spike in the population to inhabit. The property size of Sunshine is over recommendation, however the Landlord pleaded with the Pandora City permits office to allow a larger plot because of the installation of a pool. The architect could fit four of these units on 3x4 but there was no space for a pool, nor a nice social area. The original layouts of the units were...sad and cramped without the extra space...and Sunshine is synonymous with happiness! So the 3x5 acreage allowance proved to fit room to breathe and mingle, plus the pool is so important because it's the ideal way to spend time outside with others and keep cool during the day in Pandora. The Landlord humbly thanks the permit office for their consideration. The units accommodate a sim and a room mate they may find over internet or newspaper, or someone they met and think will be a good fit to live with. The roommate gets equal space to live in with equal base furnishings. The color schemes interiors and exteriors of the complex reflect the desert sands. All kinds of Browns, Reds, Oranges, Yellows, Whites, and Blacks. The exteriors structures all are stucco in the fashion of the arid area, and because of the direct sunlight, solar panels are used in every unit's electric grid to offset rent costs. Each unit has the same floor plan, however, bedrooms between the front and back units are oriented differently, and units on the left mirror the right's open room kitchen/dining/living floor plan. Each unit has a different dominating interior color and accents as well as decorated with objects variances and a different configuration of living room windows off the front of the unit. Each unit was also inspired by a desert animal. All units use Stucco walling exterior as well as clay and tile for their roofs and entryways. *Note about pics: I pushed the chairs in to show how they would look in a live-in space but pulled them out for play testing so they were usable. PUBLIC AREAS The Sunshine Complex encourages a social atmosphere with thy neighbor. Entrances to the units are just a few steps away from the communal swimming pool, and how nice to step out on the patio and see if any of the other residences are out and about? Enjoy Saturday Pizzas at the outdoor table in the shade. The eating area contains a counter and the communal garbage can for trash drops. The communal pool area has two diving boards, three lounger seating underneath umbrellas, and a towel rack. Across from the public eating area is the mail compartments and money drop for rent. Near the back of the property is a long cacti garden, and all entryways to the units are considered public space. ~*~
-THE UNITS- ~*~
Front Right Unit - "The Owl" Concept: Logic, Knowledge, Night/Dark My concept for this unit is 'Night Owl' with themes of night and dark. The main room is using black as the predominate wall color - the Patio activity is a telescope, which is mostly used at the night hours. The living room contains a chess table for logic building. The bedrooms also heavily feature dark colors contrasted with various reds. The entrance area contains two wooden chairs and planters, neighbors like to come here and sit and chat across from one another. I was getting a little experiment-y on furniture so the table next to the front door is the black IKEA square one combine with the white octagonal one to create this kind of funique (fun-unique) table sims can put newspapers or bills on. My vision of the room mates here are that they value the same keen intelligence but in different ways. There's the staunch fact-based logic master and the smart conspiracy theorist who has heavy interests in the supernatural and you can tell which bedroom reflects which. They can clash on the details but will both follow the evidence to come to a conclusion. I imagine these residences to stay up late and bask in the starry night. Whether stargazing or floating on their back in the pool which is open 24 hours. Just imagine...how vast and infinite and beautiful the desert sky would look, especially with so little light pollution in Pandora. These sims probably would favor jobs at the nearby observatory. ~*~
Front Left Unit - "The Coyote"Concept: Trickster, Fun, Party, Popularity/Pleasure Coyotes are associated with tricksters and playfulness, so my concept for this was basically an all-inclusive place for pleasure sims to have fun in. This is why they have the bubble blower in their living room and a juice keg in their kitchen. This unit is perfect for parties, and the landlord nor neighboring units won't get up in arms about it because there's no 'thin walls.' The unit is decorated with a dominate dark reddish/brown color and with many yellow, beige, or black accents. They have the biggest TV for watching sports with friends and playing video games, a wet bar for additional drinks on the patio along with music for dancing, The bedrooms indicate the sims have heavy interests in sports games and rock music. My vision of the room mates here are that they want to rock and roll all night and party every day. They got all they need for the good times to write themselves. They probably are floor house players at the casino, and probably spend a lot of time with Pandora's escorts as well. ~*~
Back Right Unit - "The Rattlesnake" Concept: Adventure, Movement, Drama and Beauty/Creativity Decorated with dominating Red and Gold with brown accents. Rattlesnakes are intimidating, and are enchanting in movement, and they shed their skin like a makeover. So the concept of beauty, drama, and movement intertwines in the decor here. The main room is dotted with far east aesthetic, indicating the residences like to travel, and Takemizu is by far their favorite. Other indications of this theme can also be found in their personal bedrooms, which also boast items of interest for Dance, Painting, and Pottery. These themes are also repeated on the patio which has essentially become an outdoor studio for their endeavors and the desert sun does a very good job of drying paint and clay. This unit has one of the best open spaces to dance in the living room to bring out that theme of movement into the main room. The entrance area is a little landscaped area with a tiny bamboo fountain, a step-stool with flowers as well as a wall plant and hanging plant in additiont o the standard desert vegetation bed, there's even a peacock statue in the bed to expound on the creative/beauty theme. My vision of the room mates in this unit are that they are fiercely creative and possibly competitive with one another which creates a bit of drama. They probably have their own stalls at the artisan market where they sell their pottery and canvases. They love movement in the form of travel and dance, respectively. ~*~
Back Left Unit - "The Armadillo" Concept: Steadfast and Quirky, Personal and Focused Decorated in deep red and golden browns, with black and orange accents, the aesthetic is a bit more expensive - the large art canvases, the luxurious lounger, double book shelf, and wine rack/juice pouring area suggest the residents here have a finer taste in decor. Their rooms suggest they are serious about music, possibly seasoned performers with a violin and synth mixer respectively. Like armadillos they kind of dig themselves into a burrow and don't come out for hours while they work, in this case, practicing their instruments. The patio contains an outdoor chess board and some plants that love the sun. The shaded entrance has a little loveseat that neighbors will come sit on and relax while waiting to see if the residents will come out and greet them. The love of music is carried into the living room with a large stereo, I imagine it to be always either be on classic or electronic station while the sims finally come out to cook or eat dinner. Again, I got experiment-y and created a coffee table from combining the ScienStone Coffee table and an orange Qube, which provides neat under-lighting to the harmonious centerpiece. Obviously, I imagined this unit occupied by sims with serious interests in music, though a bit quirky, composing electronic and playing classical - they have a higher end taste in decor and maybe have jobs performing as a DJ at the night club or busking at the market square playing violin. Maybe one day they will come together and make classical synth music for the world to love. ~*~

From the left as you are looking at the building:
Apartment 1 - Purple/yellow themed Apartment 2 - Green themed Apartment 3 - Blue themed Apartment 4 - Red themed Each apartment has two bedrooms, all have a phone on each floor and a smoke detector hidden behind the cooker hood. They all have a trash compacter and a dishwasher in their kitchens and each one has a trash chute in the kitchen area. All have burglar alarms. There are several communal areas: Office space, storage space, swimming pool, bbq and seating area, chess set. The communal garden also has a shower and toilet cubicles. EDIT: There appears to be a problem with attaching screenshots to posts at the moment, which means I am unable to attach my contest entry. Everyone's entries are looking great! Got inspiration and lots of good ideas from all of them.
Forgot to mention it earlier, though, that my own round 3 will be late--I'm currently out of town for a family event and didn't have time to update everything after playtesting. I'm learning that the quarter tile placement cheat is great for decorating, but definitely requires lots of testing! |
Are deco roofs allowed? https://psychosim.livejournal.com/17923.html
|
I lost track of time. When earlier today I looked at the timer and saw that we only had 15 hours left, I was shocked, I didn't think I could built my entry on time (*cough* I hadn't even started *cough*), which only got worse when I messed up with GridAdjuster (thankfully, I was able to solve the problem myself quite quickly, otherwise, I would've had to rebuild). After some long 10 hours straight building, I finally finished it! Woohoo! But I'm way too tired and tomorrow morning I have a doctor's appointment, so I'll have to post my entry tomorrow afternoon, after the deadline. Sorry about that, but I just can't take pictures and post an entry this late in the night.
Anyway, I'll let you know that my lot has different lighting than usual I used greenhouse walls here and there, which make the room have the outdoor lighting. While good for most apartments, the upstairs lobby was a pain to light up because of that. EDIT: I don't think so, @ekubrynaffit, since they're deco items, but I can't tell you for sure. |

Mansard roofing isn't a deco item. Unless you mean the little pieces lined up against the wall. Which are allowed because they're not CC.

The Village Apartments: Lot Size: 4x3 Apartment Rent: Three-Bedroom - $2691-$2692 When I think of renting and having roommates I always think of this type of place. It's the sort of "Everywhere America" apartment complex that you see in all largish towns. Usually there will be about 10-15 of these buildings and then another 10-15 "family sized" townhouse type buildings. I used this building for inspiration and I personally lived in a place just like this myself with two roommates(and uh.. a fair amount of cats too..) and this building reminds me of that. I built just one of the buildings, and while typically these will have only two bedrooms and the townhomes will have three, for this round I wanted to have three bedrooms for the sake of extra roommates. There are 8 units. Each apartment comes with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, fire alarm, phone and trash compactor. The fire alarms are above the fridge, the phones are in the kitchen above the counter next to the sink, the trash compactors are in the counter next to the stove. The common area features a gym, a computer/conference room, and various seating areas that probably nobody will ever use.. (Hey! Just like real life.. lol) Notes: - I ran out of time and did NOT have a chance to playtest this lot. I have no reason to believe that it isn't playable but I don't know anything for certain. I'm very sorry and if I get points off for that I totally understand. - All bedrooms are NOT noiseproofed. I would have had to rearrange the bathrooms and either lose an extra door or a lose a window and I didn't want either of those things. - There is a burglar alarm in the lobby and also a trash chute, but I'm not sure if this can replace the regular trash can so I left it out front. It's in a little trash "corral" to the right(the little fenced area). - Also, I purposely made every wall the same color. The majority of these places are just like this and always have very basic off-white walls and don't allow you to paint. Some "fancy" places will allow you to pick a color for an accent wall but this isn't one of those places And here are the apartments! ETA: And I just noticed I miscounted and went over the allowed amount of photos. I'm going to leave it, as I don't know which I should cut and it's too late anyway. I'm a total mess today, sorry ETA: Attached photos now that it is working. |
The attachment facility was broken yesterday so I couldn't attach my screenshots to my post. Tashiketh has now fixed it but I won't have time to complete my entry until I get home from work tonight.

Round 3 - Cubis Tower
34 Attachment(s)
Cubis Tower is a 6-story tower on a 2x3 lot, although technically there are 8 different levels here: ground floor, split level, 4 floors of apartments, another communal floor and the rooftop. As I mentioned before, I had lost track of time in this round, so this building was put together in the last 15 hours before the deadline. It took me about 10 to completely build it, but I was too tired to take screenshots and post an entry then, so I'm doing it now. Sorry for being slightly late. Anyway, as I had such a short amount of time to think of a design, I decided to make use of the "Projects" album in Pinterest (which I had made during the time my computer wasn't working lol) and get inspiration from there. I decided to use this image as my lot (and I even snatched the name from there, sorry). I only had the front façade to work it, so the back and sides were designed by me, trying to stay true to the front. The concept art had an additional floor for apartments, but time constraints meant that I had to keep the number of apartments to the minimum required. Inside, the ground floor lobby could easily have been the lobby of a hotel, with plenty of comfortable seating and plants, as well as some chess tables. If tenants want to embarass themselves in front of the other occupants of the building, the landlord has also provided a contrabass. Either way, each Saturday the landlord hosts a party and a professional musician is hired to play. The ground floor also has two bathrooms. Outside, residents have access to the building's pool. The hallways were kept simple, with some seating, some plants and vending machines on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The fifth floor has a secondary lobby, with some more seating and plants. Throughout the common areas, the colours chosen were light wood tones and cool colours, with nature and the ocean being the inspiration of the décor. With that in mind, the rooftop is accessible from an external staircase on the fifth floor, making for a calm place to relax. An array of solar panels is also installed on the rooftop, allowing the building to harness the beach sun and transform it into clean energy - and cheap rent! Each unit was decorated in a different colour scheme, with the open plan kitchen, dining and living areas of each apartment having the same natural wood floor and light green wall paint. They are, from bottom to top, the 'Sea Unit', the 'Rose Unit', the 'Earth Unit' and the 'Light Unit' (respectively, blue and green, pink and green, brown, black and white). The next spoilers will show the screenshots of each unit, as well as a more in-depth description of each. I tried to give an overall sense of cohesion to the units, while also keeping each one unique. For that matter, I tried to incorporate common decorative elements in each unit, like the wall lights that are a chain with little lamps hanging (I don't know its name in the English version, sorry). Every unit is fully furnished and has the appropriate items - fridges, stoves, phones, alarms, trash bin and/or compactor, et cetera. I think each unit has an item for every skill except Logic. For that I have placed a telescope in the rooftop and two chess tables in the lobby, which should be enough. The reason why I end up not placing Logic items in my builds is because, well, non-CC chess tables are hard to fit in modern builds, in my opinion, and telescopes don't always fit, either not having actual space or seeming out of place for the household in mind. That's why I end up having them in common areas. As this lot was built in the last hours before the deadline, I didn't have time to playtest it. I tried to avoid potential playability problems, but I can't be sure, so I just hope I learnt enough in my two previous rounds (and my previous apartment building experiences for that matter, lol) to have successfully separated what works from what borks. Once again, sorry for being late. I think I wrote everything I had to write. Enjoy the beach life, roommate! EDIT: The pictures were taken in my Build/Test hood. You can see my previous two builds there. If you're sharp enough, you might even take a look at the shell I will complete for the next round in one or the other screenshot! EDIT 2: I missed a good opportunity for a pun! If you C# enough, you can take a look at the shell! OK, I'll walk myself out... |

Very awesome build, @Yvelotic2001 - I especially love the modern look of the outside and your concept for the different units. I didn't see any of the structure pictures in your post after the spoiler, you may check your links on that

Thanks, @Charmful! I also really liked your desert build. I don't play a desert hood, but your lot, for a moment, made me wish I did!
For me, the pictures are showing normally. I guess maybe saying it was "structure" pics is confusing. I meant the 8 pics we are allowed to showcase the building itself instead of the units. I'll change the wording in the post either way |
Thanks for the compliment! I had no confusion with the wording but I still see no pictures after selecting the additional structure spoiler. I can see what I'm missing in the attached images though. I wonder if it's a browser issue? I'm on chrome mobile and desktop. Does anyone else have my issue or can you see additional structure pics in the post too?
