Calling all SimNation Builders!

It still continues to amaze me how much Maxis put into all the Sim games, becoming part of our gaming culture way back in the late 1980s. Countless hours spent at the computer building little cities, watching the buildings grow before being demolished by an unchecked natural disaster.

With each new version of the game came new sights to see. SimCity 2000 most notably (to me) had the arcologies that launched into space. SimCity 4 had the emergence of the SimNation as a whole. Sim Park let you build a thriving park that Sims wanted to be in, wildlife to wander through, and Rizzo the annoying frog to pop up and tell you 'She is dead' whenever you clicked on a tree. Sim Safari allowed you to pretend that you actually had the skill to manage a wildlife reserve. Sim Town fostered the kid in everyone with the funny animated buildings that really had personality.

How many players still miss various things from Sims 1? Everyone had their own items that they just couldn't live without, almost all Maxis never remade for Sims 2.

Until Sims 2, everything in the Sims games were sprites set in perspective (for the games that let the camera 'move', with the exceptions of the Sims 1 sims and the pets. Now we can zoom and rotate around our world, being able to build and furnish our Simmies lives to their heart's content.

I hope to find other modders with the desire to rebuild the Sims' collective world as they would know it.

What I'm looking for:
  • Object Meshers- Even in just Sims 1 there is an enormous amount of objects, simple and staggeringly complex that are no more than pipe dreams in our Sim's world.
  • Mappers- Do you LOVE to UVMap? From personal experience even the best objects can look shoddy if mapped insufficiently. However I'd love to find someone who actually enjoys doing this because I'd rather spend time meshing!
  • Recolorists- I love having recolors match multiple themes, and find it rather strange when I play Sims 1 and realize that there is only one option for every item!
  • Clothing meshers- Yes, Sims 1 clothes are dorky... but before Sims 2, what wasn't?
  • Coders- those who understand and can modify an object's functionality (altering Bhavs)
  • Builders- Anyone wanting to remake lots and homes (Sim Town, Sims 1). It was a huge loss to a lot of people when MellySim removed all of her downloads and they are sorely missed.
  • Artists- There is a LOT of artwork from Sims 1, an a lot of it I can't do because I don't know how to recreate the specific styles of artwork, but I love, love, love the objects! If I have the artwork I WILL make the meshes!
  • Automotive design meshers- Sims 1 had a Lot of cars even though your Sims couldn't drive them. I still drool over the teal Bentley, and I have some Sims in Strangetown who would love the pink Limo with the flamingo hood ornament!
  • Animators- there are three ways that I know of for modders to animate in Sims 2. (Correct me if I'm wrong) 1.) Animated pictures 2.) Animated objects (there are a few animated ceiling fans here on Mod) 3.) Re-using (or splicing together?) existing animations for other uses (there is a toddler/puppies/kitties can use stairs mod here that uses some form of this) I really want to make things back to their original functionality as possible but I don't know how to do animations, but I have lots of ideas.

  • Screenie Compilers- For those who either have Sims 1 and/or other Sim games who want to take screenshots for modders to work from or wanting to compile many screenshots into a single picture (most especially for lots).

  • Photographers- Do you LOVE taking high quality in-game screenshots that could be used to show off the Collective's work for upload posts? We'd love to have you!

  • Librarians- This is for those who actually still remember how to mod from Sims 1 or are proficient enough with the net to track down the illusive info. This is most important with clothing and viewing the Sims in SimShow and I cannot remember how to do it! Also I really, really, really, want the .BMPs extracted for the Walls and floors so I can see about remaking them for Sims 2 quality.
  • (Essentially anyone who can help me with any part of this project)

I have been slowly working on recreating Sims 1 things for at least two years now, I have a lot of works in progress that I have started but need to work through some of the bugs, or finish some darn complicated meshes! I would like to keep the projects as high quality as possible so the most people can enjoy them.

If this sounds like a fun and interesting endeavor, leave a post with what you would like to contribute!

kopple36 9th Jan 2009 10:30 AM

I'd be happy to help! I miss alot from Sims 1!
I can recolour, build and if you want recreate the Sims from SIms 1!

leefish 9th Jan 2009 8:09 PM

Hi
I can mesh and do BHAVs, my UV mapping and texture skills are practically nil, I have never played Sims 1 but played sim city. If you want me on the team, let me know. I am an ok builder too, and a good copyist.

Petchy 10th Jan 2009 7:56 PM

LETMEHELP!!

I would LOVE to try Making TS1 cloths, maybe using Textures and such from TS2 stuff, Piercing them together, along with (trying ) to make my own I played TS1 and was amazed at the stuff (content and feature wise) that was open, TS2 has/had less... yet more!?

I'd love to join in this project, If you'll let me in

(((BTW: I can Also make sims of the original characters, head models *gulp*, etc. I would prefer to do this actually, But who knows! )))

Corsetcrush 10th Jan 2009 9:18 PM

I'm really excited that you guys want to help! The last time there was a group om Mod trying to get things together for remaking Sims 1 stuff was when they used to have a request forum (a few years ago) and no one in the group seemed to know what was going on.

I am working on putting a private group together so we will have somewhere to work on the projects. Hopefully invitations will be following shortly.

After feeling like the Lone Modder for Sims 1 stuff, I'm looking forward to the help!

Elephant 10th Jan 2009 11:27 PM

You did forget one thing, neighborhoods!

I have the TS1 Pets hood and the TS1 Vacation isle hood in my downloads and I can do more (TS1 and any other Sim games)

Petchy 11th Jan 2009 12:07 AM

Elephant; I'm a Terrain Maker by Trade, so I can help out with that too
((But I'd rather do some BS stuff LOL)) :D

Elephant 11th Jan 2009 1:24 AM

Sounds good,

Since it'd be easier to see what we can re-create, here's a list of the Sim games

Sim Farm
Sim Ant
Sim Life
Sim Park
Sim Safari
Sim Theme Park
Sim Tower
Sim Nation
Sim City
Sim City 2000
Sim City 3000
Sim City 4
Sim City Societies (2008)

The Sims
-Living Large
-House Party
-Hot Date
-Vacation
-Unleashed
-Making Magic
-Superstar

Did I forget any?

So, when all is finished will it be uploaded here to MTS2?
Something like the Simstones or A Midsimmer's Night Dream uploads?

Also, since I'd like to make some neighborhoods, should there be a Main 'hood, and then each game (including TS1 EPs) could have their own sub-hood off of that?

I'm thinking we can upload the 'hoods like that with lots and decor already added.

It'd be easy to make 'hoods for Sim Safari, Sim Town, and other games that don't have a defined map to base them off of.

kopple36 11th Jan 2009 1:59 AM

You missed House Party!

Elephant 11th Jan 2009 2:05 AM

I thought there was a seventh EP.
I added it to the list

simsample 11th Jan 2009 2:15 AM

Well I have SC4, SC3000 and the Sims 1 complete installed on various PCs now so I'd love to help with screenshots, terrains, housebuilding... anything that doesn't need too much creativity (I have none!). I can have a go at extracting some textures too- I think SimWardrobe has a program that will do that for Sims 1.

Petchy 11th Jan 2009 2:05 PM

Sample; You could take pictures of the head moddles, That would help me loads because I haven't got TS1 installed anywhere atm

Corsetcrush 11th Jan 2009 8:56 PM

Group invites have been sent out and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will work.

Leesester: I would love to have your help! I have a vague understanding of what Bhavs do, so just let me know when things aren't workable or have nothing to do with the Bhavs.

Petchy: I think one of the reasons that it seems like Sims 2 has more, yet less is because Sims 1 had so much highly stylized sets that made a fair amount of the Sims 2 sets seem really bland. I guess EA just assumed that it would be better to just play it safe.

Elephant: You forgot Sim Town on your list (I LOVE that one!)

Quote:
1.) So, when all is finished will it be uploaded here to MTS2? Something like the Simstones or A Midsimmer's Night Dream uploads?

1.) Yes, that's exactly what I was hoping for. Does anyone know how to make a group like that? Is there any requirements?

2.) That would be really neat. I've downloaded a 'maxis mega hood' before but it wasn't on Mod. Would something like that be too big to upload here, or would we need to link it from elsewhere?

There are the Maxis characters that are already placed and have a tiny blurb about them, but there was no genetics, family trees, or overall story to any of it. What I'm wondering is if making a maxis-like Sims 2 neighborhood complete with a storyline (that keep the feel of Sims 1) would be way too much to work on. It's a neat idea however!

3.) Sim Safari would be fun as a tropical vacation hood. Sim town would be perfect for a Bluewater Village type neighborhood since it has homes and businesses.

Petchy & Elephant: There was also the Hot Date, Makin' Magic, and Studio Town (Superstar) neighborhoods. How do you figure out the scale for laying the roads in SC4 to not end up huge in Sims 2? I tried to figure that out but just ended up confusing myself.

Simsample: I would be thrilled to have someone be able to help with screenshots! Having the files extracted would be a major plus as well. Do you know/can you find how to extract the BMP files from the walls and floors so we could see about remaking them with higher texture quality? I haven't figured it out quite yet.

As for the clothing textures and the body & head meshes I'm pretty sure those are easy to extract.

Do you possibly have a 'clean' install of Sims 1 for getting lot screenshots (with the grid from build/buy mode)? If not I think I can do one on my laptop after I hunt down my registration codes.

J. M. Pescado 12th Jan 2009 11:35 AM

I resurrected the TS1 Auto-Flushing Terlet in TS2 already.

Ohhhh, I saw that somewhere... let me see...

Corsetcrush 15th Jan 2009 2:41 AM

Pescado- Thanks for the info. I was just thinking about that one the other day and had no idea why EA/Maxis never made one for TS2. Almost all my houses had this one because I got so tired of them clogging up so frequently.

And to make it easier for everyone else, here's Pescado's Terlet.

Phaenoh 20th Jan 2009 8:06 AM

If the game had 'Sim' in front of it, I've played it. SimIsle and SimCopter sucked though. And Rizzo, he sucked too.

I can build, mesh, and texture, I'm interested in seeing objects get redone for Sims2. I like the fact that all the Sims1 characters were already incorporated into Sims2, so I'm not too keen on their time warp copies.

Corsetcrush 22nd Jan 2009 7:57 PM

Welcome to the group Phaenoh! I've sent you an invite to the workshop. :D

amythestfenix 22nd Jan 2009 11:55 PM

This sounds really interesting. I do object recolors and would like to help.

Corsetcrush 23rd Jan 2009 3:47 AM

An invite has been sent. And Welcome!

ShanOw 27th Jan 2009 2:27 AM

Corset, I'd love to help. I can mesh, texture and make good screenies. I also like fiddling around with packages to make them do *stuff* (I admit most of the things I make really have no actual use, but they're fun anyway.

Corsetcrush 27th Jan 2009 7:06 AM

Great to see you ShanOw! I was wondering if you might find your way here. An invite is on the way. We've been hard at work and getting a lot done, but I personally would get more done if I had some help with the screenshots if you felt like it.

But there is still LOTS to do!

QBUILDERZ 16th Feb 2009 10:08 PM

I would love to help out! I am Qbuilderz, Q, and I can Build lots, Mesh, recolor, and make terrains.

leefish 16th Feb 2009 11:07 PM

Yay! welcome guys.....

Xianny 17th Feb 2009 12:58 AM

This sounds interesting, I'd like to help!

I can build lots.

Lewis_MB 19th Feb 2009 5:44 PM

I would be happy to be one of the resident SimArchitects here for lots. In a couple of weeks, I shall have much more time and I would love to get building again. I have recreated houses from Simcity 3000 and Simcity 4 - and I have even been searching through screenshots of a Maxis game that none of us have ever/will ever play: Simsville. For now, you can find replicas of the houses from Desperate Housewives in my portfolio, as well as a couple of houses inspired by the Maxis Sims 2 collections.

I do get Sims 1 nostalgia - there's just something about it that's warm, intriguing and funny.

CorsetCrush: I also liked the cars in TS1 - and I think most of them were based upon real models like the VW golf and the Dodge Viper. That Bentley still appears in SimCity 4 - along with other great looking cars in Rush Hour. I'm pretty sure that Will Wright or someone has a weakness for 1950s cars - seeing there's the 'Junky' Chevolet in TS1, and cars with fins appear in SC3K, 4 and Simsville. The car designs in TS2 sucked though, and they all had silly steering wheels.

draik12 21st Feb 2009 6:30 AM

I'd be happy to recreate some of the houses, I just recently re-installed The Sims Complete Collection, so I have access to all of the lots.

celebkiriedhel 22nd Feb 2009 8:10 PM

I only do texturing - recolouring. But I'm happy to texturing for the original objects as well, if the uvmapping is already done.

I'm in the process of moving back to Australia - where I have the complete sims1 collection, sim safari and simcity. So will be able to help more after April 10.

I've already done the Sims Walls, and a few other things at my site -

Deluxe Designs 25th Feb 2009 10:46 PM

Hey there I am DD and i would love to join this project, it is great to see so many great builders and meshers getting involved in this Ok here is what i can do:
Mesh (mapping is suckish though )
Build Houses
Recolours (I LOVE recolouring )
Photographs
I can also do walls and floors if you want to expand that far into the game but that may be excessive

Anyway yeah i would love to delve in and give this project a go, thanks,

DD

Corsetcrush 7th Mar 2009 2:11 AM

Sorry for the delay everyone, I've been very busy in the real world and trying to catch up now. All invites have been sent out.

QBUILDERZ, Xianny, Draik12, & other lot builders:
There are many lots to build, most notably community type lots. Hopefully you can find some that you can have fun with! Also I personally would enjoy lots that fit the look and feel of the original styles but entirely new lots!

Hmm... I may even have a mini challenge for lots brewing...

Lewis_MB:
I would LOVE lots & houses from non-Sims 1 games, I remember being annoyed with SimCity 4 because the closest zoom was not good enough to see the buildings in higher detail. I would love to see some of the Simville houses, I was really disappointed when they canceled it, but I guess we got Sims 2 out of it!

I think you are right about the cars, I'm not a car fanatic (I'm 30 and I've never had a driver's license!) but I really like the look of the older cars. The cars in Sims 1 were SO much more interesting than Sims 2. With Makin' Magic there was the blimp and the clown car, Old Town and Superstar had two different trollies, vacation had the luggage rack on the SUV with the luggage, even Superstar had the pink limo with the flamingo hood ornament! To me the Sims 2 cars still don't compare.

Celebkiriedhel:
I have had that link bookmarked for quite some time now...

Recolors are always wonderful, and honestly I tend to spend about half my time (or more) trying to recolor 'remade' objects to match the Sims 1 originals but I'm much happier just meshing (and that DOES include UVmapping). I can do some basic recolors (more to identify the parts than actually making worthwhile textures) so that the UVmaps will make more sense. At the moment the lack of meshes (and their textures/recolors) to me seems to be the biggest reason why the Sims 1 and other game lots were never done really well. Plus you can give me feedback on if the UVmap needs to be changed to better fit how it will be recolored.

Deluxe Designs:
YAY, another mesher!! We definitely need these! What way do you map your objects? UVmapper pro, classic, or another way?

Personally I'd love to have lots of great recolors for SimNation's new objects, making them appealing to all gamers, not just the "retro sim gamers."

Photographs, meaning screenshots or something else?

Excessive? I have obsessive-compulsive disorder... excessive is a word that is unknown to me...

Original Screenshots from previous games- if anyone has any to offer they will be gladly accepted! I just do not have the time to collect all that are needed (and still have time to mesh), so even if you have one or two we'd love to see them!

Welcome to SimNation!

celebkiriedhel 24th Mar 2009 7:37 PM

that works for me I just love texturing - I almost got a paying job in it at one point.

No problems at all with feedback on the UVmap. :D

I'm coming up to my last days in Ireland now, so I should be set in a couple of weeks :D

Ambular 25th May 2009 9:07 PM

If somebody could get me some good clear screenshots, I'd be willing to take a stab at meshing and texturing the old-fashioned refrigerator from TS1. Someone remade the matching stove but never the fridge, and I've missed it, but I no longer have TS1 installed and I'm not sure where my disks are now...

cmomoney 16th Jun 2009 7:10 AM

I'd like to help. I have Sims 1, SimCity4, and Sim City Societies. I mesh, uv map, texture, and dabble in BHAVS. I have only been creating for a few months, but I'll help any way I can

daluved1 19th Jun 2009 8:14 AM

I'd love to help! I have The Sims 1: Complete Collection, Sim City 2000, and Sim City 4

I have a back up of my Sim 1 downloads from many moons ago somewhere >>"

*looks around her filthy room*

I can make careers...and I can build. I've also tried my hand at object creation, although I'm still making basic things like plates and bowls.

Now there's one thing I know for sure that I can do well: art work!
Just give me a picture and I'll recreate it for you.

(If you want to take a look at some of my work, you can look here: http://daluved1.deviantart.com/)

  • Librarians- This is for those who actually still remember how to mod from Sims 1 or are proficient enough with the net to track down the illusive info. Also I really, really, really, want the .BMPs extracted for the Walls and floors so I can see about remaking them for Sims 2 quality.

[bmps can be extracted using a FAR editor and cmx maker. I think these programs are still available.

tregnier2795 22nd Aug 2009 9:44 AM

Is there any intent to continue work on this for Sims 3, once proper meshing tools become available?

If so, I'd be more than willing to help recreate some of the lots.

Mario125 31st Jan 2010 2:31 AM

I can make the .sc4 terrain now witch one Old town or regular Sim Lane.

Mario125 23rd Mar 2010 1:39 AM

I have completed Simville (That's the town in Sims 1)

NickelNicole12 24th May 2010 12:55 AM

I would love to help building because thats all i can do, but this project is for sims 2 right?

CircusWolf 24th May 2010 8:57 PM

Hey does anyone have the pictures of the 3 sim lane (i think) and 6 sim lane Both are from the first neighborhood i just dont have the game nor skills to get a screenie (long story why i dont have the original)

joninmobile 7th Jul 2010 9:58 PM

I made a table lamp from the Sims 1 for Sims 2 on Sapphiresims as my policy states, you can feel free to use it in lots that you submit to any site, so that includes mts of course.

ModClod 7th Jan 2012 11:59 PM

Noo! Not Societes that wasn't made by maxis, is 3D is by Tilted Mill and Definately not a Sim game. Also it was made AFTER the sims 2 sooo yeah.
Also you missed SimEarth, SimAnt, SimRefinery, SimMars, SimsVille, and SimLife

mokbokox 30th Jun 2012 7:18 PM

^er

kinda agree, although if you knew how you could attach those programs to 'arcade machine' items in the game so when your character clicks on them the screen shifts to 'sim ant' or 'sim city 2000/3000'.

..so.um...how about that tutorial? or a point in the direction of one.

by the way its not impossible to have socities for the sims 1. if say six people were to use something like team viewer on one computer at the same time, then they could all put their effort and designs into one neighborhood made by them each, each working on a seperate family-or two players at the same time. the issue of hwo to get more than one mouse comes up then though...
