Terrain Paint

Hi!

Let's see, what we already have:

- Martine's textures from World Adventure (earth, sand)

- My textures (broken terrain, asphalt)

I'll start to create more terrains on Thursday.
I have made some terrain paints for my medieval simrim world. I'll add them too. (dry grass, mud)
All of my terrain paints will have two versions: CAW and ingame (for the lot builders)

matrix54 6th Jun 2012 2:52 AM

I'm working on a few now. Both hand made and edited. :D

I've made some Nuclear waste (hand made) and some charred + burned grass (modified dry grass).

Hi matrix!

I replied your message first and then I read your post here. Sorry.

I see, that your dry grass looks very cool.

Here are some suggestions what I can create:
- volcanic stones
- broken lake beds/wasteland
- broken asphalt
- craters
- maybe some water terrain for a toxic look of the sea?

squaretable 6th Jun 2012 8:21 AM

I'm good at photoshopping normal image files, I could do a Burnt grass or a scorched soil, unfortunately I don't know how to get them in game, which is a shame, because I love building lots...

matrix54 6th Jun 2012 8:48 AM

VampireSim: I'd say go a little crazy, and when everything is said and done, we choose what we need and want to use and we go from there.

squaretable: I'll put them in the game, no worries. :D

Yes, let's make a kind of texture database to have a solid basis.

matrix54 6th Jun 2012 9:45 PM

How are we going to do that?

VampireSim 6th Jun 2012 10:43 PM

Maybe we can open a new thread?
Like: Database - Textures
And we attach the files to our posts.

matrix54 7th Jun 2012 12:04 AM

We could just dump them here.

matrix54 7th Jun 2012 12:42 AM

Some rubble/debris/whatever:

Just a combination of Sims 3 materials, so it actually blends in with the rest of the terrain.

My first set of terrains: Craters
8 terrain paints for CAW as .dds files and ingame as .package files.
I attached screenshots from CAW and ingame.

yzisme 7th Jun 2012 11:45 PM

How about roads? Large cracks, dust, weeds, etc. I'm not good at this stuff, but I'm just putting ideas out there.

cameranutz2 8th Jun 2012 2:46 PM

Wow, nice TPS, VampireSim!

VampireSim 8th Jun 2012 3:08 PM

Thanks cameranutz2!

I sent a message to Prawler:

I'm thinking of a totally new texture thread in the CAW Resources section, because some of my textures have a wrong scale. I want to render all textures new like I did with the crater textures.
My skills have grown after the The Merrye Makers project and the resource thread was made before.
And I think, it's easier for you, because just make link to my new texture thread.

I'll send you a PM after I deleted the old thread and startet an new one.

I think, this makes more sence instead of collecting the textures from several threads and groups. What do you think?

VampireSim 8th Jun 2012 4:14 PM

ok

matrix54 8th Jun 2012 4:29 PM

*Becomes boss* I want everything pink! I want to make full and complete use of the Katy Perry Pack.

Sounds excellent. Let's swap out that dry grass for some bubble gum craters.

You can have all the nuclear green ice cream you want, too. Mmmm, these fancy isotope sprinkles sure do taste unusual!

matrix54 8th Jun 2012 8:46 PM

A bit of something for everyone, me thinks. :D

Sorceress Supreme 8th Jun 2012 9:35 PM

I played around with CAW textures and here are few of them. If they're any good, I'm happy to share. Tell me what you think.

VampireSim thinks its easier to upload textures and paints to the resource section, so it would be best to upload the there when she has them all sorted

Okay, I'll post them there and few others too, when that section is up. The ocean one is my favorite, as well.

I like the bottom left best, personally, but the ocean paint has its charm.

SharaRose 9th Jun 2012 6:13 AM

The CAW files are up for initial review in the World News Tonight thread (main social group forum). After we do a round-robin and everyone edits their own roads and terrain shaping, I'll post a final template world and everyone can start working together on the lots, deco, painting, etc.

Right now, the CAW files include the textures I used for the base world. When the final template world goes up, I'd like to have paints included for any textures people plan to use, so we can all use them (keeping in mind that 8 paints per chunk is recommended, and the starter file uses a few of those already). Thing is, if we put dozens of paints into CAW, they'll be difficult to find in the list, and I have a feeling this thread is going to grow quite a bit. Should this thread include all the options, and in a few days start a new thread for the ones people definitely plan to use?

We definitely want to include the paints in CAW up front wherever possible. While they can be added at the end of the process, we don't want to include multiple layers of the same texture because everyone used it. We can combine those terrain paint maps into one at the end, it would be time-consuming, and would force the layer above or below where most individuals had it, changing the look entirely. So initial inclusion is definitely the way to go.

Thoughts?

matrix54 9th Jun 2012 8:18 AM

Some ingame testing has led me to believe I should do anymore terrain mods. Why do they break when I try to use a square brush? Or just break period. All I did was change the name + catalog description, renamed it internally and changed the image file - is something else wrong?

VampireSim 9th Jun 2012 10:37 AM

How are you saving your .dds files? Which settings?

And Matrix could you convert them so people can use them outside of CAW, cause unfortunately thats what i made them for, but id love to use them ingame.
Thx
BTW it is insnt too hard, converting Images into textures for use ingame?

VampireSim 9th Jun 2012 1:09 PM

I think, the easiest way to create ingame terrain paints is to clone exisiting game terrains with the S3oc Cloner . You create a cloned .package file with this tool, open it with the S3pe Package Editor , remove the existing .dds file and replace it with yours.

But I'm using the TSR Workshop (old dogs seldom learn new tricks )

Edit:

Here is a new thread for terrain paints.

Too Hard & My Strangetown texture is Rubbish

ooh no too complex even for me, I cant do anything near scripting, I oly work with basic Custom Content by others and what EAxis gives me to use. Anyway my Strangetown one is a piece of ********************** so DONT use it it is Rubbish. But my Vacation Island one is Ok as long as you dont over-use it.

matrix54 9th Jun 2012 5:57 PM

Aren't those too small? O_O

VampireSim 9th Jun 2012 6:07 PM

squaretables textures? Yes.
All textures must have the size 1024 x 1024 pixels.

VampireSim 13th Jun 2012 5:38 PM

There are now 52 textures available in this thread .

Sorry made them for CAW optimised painting (225x225 or something like that) should I make newer larger (and in the deserts ones case, actually half decent) paints, because I've used the snow one quite well on a Vacation Island (remember sims 1) world I made (search SimsVille Squaretable22 to see it on YouTube) so I'll try my hand at making textures or recolouring old ones.

VampireSim 14th Jun 2012 12:46 PM

If you want to make larger textures, then give it a go!
the more textures the better.

k thanks, i've been a bit busy with the new term recently and only being able to do something on the computer 1/3 of days, along with balancing my other CAW project, but I'll see if I can do something in Paintoshop (paint and Photoshop) tonight. This should be fun!

VampireSim 19th Jun 2012 1:38 PM

Small Update:
