Mini Tutorials

Just recently Rosebine gave me a mini tutorial on how to fix the bone assignment mistake on sexy feet. I bookmarked it and then discovered to my dismay when I came back to the bookmark that it had defaulted to the current page of the Stupid/Random Questions thread and I had to search back for the tutorial. Over time I've seen several useful mini tutorials posted in threads and then left to vanish to the backs of them. I thought that it might be useful to collect links to them in one place.

Cleaning a lot of sim references

Just adding no lot, not even a blank unplayed lot is free of sim references. They may be universals or something else. I am really not sure. There is a huge difference in the amount and type of references that that show up in simpe between a lot that has had sims in it and a blank lot. So if you open a lot in simpe, even a cleaned lot, do not be alarmed at seeing some sim references.

smorbie1 29th Aug 2017 12:12 PM

If someone could find a tutorial on Gimp (I've had no luck, naturally), I would so love the link. I'm new, new, new to trying to do ANYTHING, and I don't want to mess anything up. I never even used the little paint program that used to come with windows, so none of the icons make sense to me. And I can't figure out how to import the mesh I want to recolor to the program.

Rosebine 29th Aug 2017 2:48 PM

Great idea..now it just makes me want to write more stuff. lol
@smorbie1 I have Gimp, but never really learned how to use it. It confuses me. I guess I stuck with paintshop pro 9, got used to it and everything else looks discouraging. Don't bother with Paint (comes with Windows) I cannot figure this one out, and it does not have what it takes for sims 2 creating anyway.
I still use very old tutorials as reference, even though techniques have changed a lot since the sims original, but i think it is time to upgrade everything.

RoxEllen1965 29th Aug 2017 8:27 PM

I tried Gimp on my old laptop, but didn't like it because it was missing adjustment layers and some other features I feel are necessary for what I use it for. I was used to Jasc's old Paint Shop Pro 9 and liked it a lot. I have Corel's Paint Shop Pro X7 now (it came free with my other computer). I don't like it as much as Jasc's version, but it does what I need it to do (mostly photo retouching/repair). Windows Paint is a very basic paint program. It doesn't have advanced features like layers and will likely not be useful for what you want to do anyway.

Searching Google and YouTube came up with a lot of tutorials for Gimp. Several of them were specifically labeled as being for beginners. I haven't looked at any of these myself so I don't know how good any of them are.

Get some idea of what you need a paint program to do for you. This will determine what features you need the most and what kind of tutorials for that program will be most useful to you. I've never made anything for TS2, so I'm not sure what features would be required to use a paint program to make stuff for it. I assume layers are a requirement - I can't imagine doing anything useful without them. Adjustment layers are a "must have" feature for me, but I don't know if they're really necessary for the kind of things TS2 creators do. Gimp doesn't have them anyway and I get the impression that quite a few TS2 creators use it.

Justpetro 29th Aug 2017 9:26 PM

When I tried Gimp and clothing recolors for the first time, I could not get some of the steps right, and then asked somebody who uses it a lot, and she told me to download a Windows run time environment for Gimp, since it was written for Mac, not for Windows.

I did succeed with some basic clothing recolors after downloading that. So it may be something to look at.

Rosebine 30th Aug 2017 4:45 AM

Oh yes. Adjustment layers are wonderful for TS2 work, and I just began to discovered them. lol

Every lot, even ones previously cleaned, will have Sim Information. I usually see just one.

I always see Sim Relations and Sim Scores as well. On a bare-bones house, though, the number is much smaller. I have a prototype of a lot I saved. It wasn't the easiest of builds, and just in case I messed up in a further step, I could fall back on this version. It isn't even remotely completed and is an empty shell, and it has four Sim relationships! They are unknown/unknown, but are still relationships; most likely concerning Universal NPCs.

I believe, though am not sure, that the more worrisome references are the Family Tree, Sim Wants and Fears and Sim DNA ones, or any Sim Relationship files that are NOT Unknowns. I've packaged many, many lots, being extra-careful to never package a played one, and have never seen these in my lot packages.

Simpearls has several tutorials. Many are pretty easy to follow. Two links, though, don't work properly. (Fortunately, I got the good version of one of them before Black Pearl Sims closed.) You might have to register for these, though.

maxon 30th Aug 2017 1:00 PM

Sim Rels are standard in all lots, especially furnished. Some of those things seem to come from linking furniture like kitchen units and so on (don't ask me why). I did some experiments a while back and posted a thread about it somewhere. You should see SimRELs and SimSCORs and Sim Information (usually one of those). In my last upload, Cherry Tree Road, the furnished version had 152 SRELs compared with the unfurnished (12). They were identical builds with the furnished version being just a copy of the unfurnished with furniture and plants added. SimSCORs and Sim Info were the same for both (I think the Scor value depends on your EP/SP set up). Both were built in an otherwise empty hood with no sims at all present.

Any more mini tutorials?

gummilutt 10th Sep 2017 10:51 PM

I've written a few, but I don't remember in which threads or how long ago, so too much trouble to find them. The one I wrote recently is in a tutorial sub forum, and I don't think that is what Charity had in mind when making this thread, right?

Rosebine 10th Sep 2017 10:57 PM

Ahah! I know a wrote a few as well, and finding them is trouble too.
But maybe it is worth it.

Charity 11th Sep 2017 9:44 AM

Yeah, this was meant for the ones that hadn't been written up as proper tutorials. Because some of them are still very useful and they vanish in threads.

Okay, good Pdf tutorial of how to check hair mesh polycounts. Checking poly count is the same on all meshes, so you could use it for anything really, but the pictures are of a hair mesh and the explaining is based on a hair mesh.

natboopsie 6th Nov 2017 10:06 AM

Since I've stolen away a little time to post, I am adding here a link to the very useful minitutorial by @maxon on fixing elevations of apartment sublots that end up sunken. Because it's great and should be kept easily accessible for others. (But because I have not asked her permission, I am tagging her to let her know I've done so. Maxon, I have no objection if you wish to remove my link for your own reasons.)

Also posting to add a citation and additional usage for the method mentioned in Jo's minitutorial earlier in the thread on stripping lots of sim references.

The citation: for more details about stripping, you may want to check out what Jawusa originally wrote. Jawusa is the one who developed the technique. (I've linked directly there to the post in which Jawusa gives her specific directions, though her overall thread is about the clean, empty templates that Jawusa made using the technique.)

And the additional/alternative usage: you can also strip lots that are already placed in a hood, without ever packaging them again before or after, as long as you know their lot number. However, I have only done this in unplayed lot-testing hoods (the kind I make only to place a few interesting downloaded lots, to see whether I want to keep any---then deleting the whole hood when done, never playing it). So I will err on the side of caution and not recommend that anyone strip a placed lot inside hoods that they care about. Working with a package, especially one you've made a backup of first, is surely always safer! (And if anyone out there knows for sure that my alternative method is also safe to use in actively played hoods, please let us know.)

To find a lot number for any lot in a hood, type in the cheat showlotpackage. It should work in hood view, though it's possible you've got to first use testingcheatsenabled; unfortunately, I can't say for sure because I play with showlotpackage in my userstartup file. (The whole showlotpackage thing is a tip I got from BoilingOil's own kindly shared userstartup file, in this thread on Leefish.)

Once you've got the cheat running...

Whew! OK, urge to share knowledge, satisfied. For now, heh.

Editing Relationships in SimPE

There may be times that you wish to edit sims' relationships for storyline reasons. Maybe you want to fix a glitch wherein sims are suddenly flagged as engaged or married to sims they've never even met. Maybe you don't like some of the set relationships in premade hoods. If that's the case, then this tutorial can help you.

Note: Do not attempt to use this tutorial to create relationships with unsafe NPCs.

Spoilered for pictures:

I promised to give instructions on how to merge Squinge's Lecture mod with inteen. As there were two people who wanted it I decide to make it a written up tutorial instead, and since I thought there may be more people who want it I might as well share it. Too specific to make sense as a tutorial thread, so I am hoping it's okay if I attach it here. I forgot to mention in the tutorial that when the merge is done you only need the inteenimater_b package, Squinge's mod is not required because you add everything to the B-package. So only use the inteen one in your game.

@EmeraldFalcon @Sunbee Tutorial is done

It will work for any mod where it's the action string text list that conflicts, but depending on your skill set it may be hard to apply it to other situations, especially if there are multiple uses if action strings in the bhav.

Bumping this to add gdayars' post on the values for skills in SimPE.

Quote: Originally posted by gdayars

Literal values (if you're changing the value in a BCON, or entering them as literals in a BHAV):
0x09 Cleaning
0x0A Cooking
0x0B Charisma
0x0C Mechanical
0x0F Creativity
0x11 Body
0x12 Logic

BCON values (If you're changing an existing BHAV to point to a different line in the global skills BCON):
0x011B:0x00 Cleaning
0x011B:0x01 Cooking
0x011B:0x02 Charisma
0x011B:0x03 Mechanical
0x011B:0x04 Creativity
0x011B:0x05 Body
0x011B:0x06 Logic

The skill flags are:
Cleaning 0080
Cooking 0001
Charisma 0020
Mechanical 0002
Creativity 0010
Body 0008
Logic 0004

To get more than one to show up at the same time you have to add them together in hex. So "+Mechanical, +Body" would be 000A. "+Mechanical, +Body, +Creativity" would be 001A.

I use stripped lots in hoods I play and have not experienced any problems. I completely stripped a hood I've used for many years, one lot at a time, moving sims in and out of residential lots and including community lots. In one case a community lot had genetic references. (The hood is over 10 years old and that was an ancient lot I downloaded from TSR.) It's been a couple of years since I cleaned all the lots and I've seen nothing unusual in the game.

Well, here's another way to manage "Subscription Overload": arrange your thread subscriptions in folders. I currently have, aside from my main Subscriptions folder (reserved for threads I'm following very closely), extra folders for Sims 2-related threads, Sims 3-related threads, non-specific Sims-related threads, and just miscellaneous threads from the General Discussion areas (that one's my smallest folder, FWIW). If you ever want to see all of your subs, regardless of folder, there's also the " View all Subscribed Threads" link on your main Subs page.

Alright, added.

AnMal 16th Aug 2018 11:56 AM

Hello, I hope I'm not posting in a bad place with this - I just read this through to find the minitutorials and saw people have been discussing gimp. A while earlier I came across this mini-tutorial: http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=510500 that uses gimp, but in what seemed to me a very clumsy and roundabout way for a very simple task. I wanted to write a reply to that thread with updated tips, but there was no way to reply to that thread and I didn't want to start a new one. So I thought of something else after reading this thread: is anyone interested in some mini-tutorials on gimping for simmers? I've only just started recolouring and retexturing objects, so I can't actually help with the more technical sides of things, but I could write down how-tos for simple things like making wall and floor textures using gimp, editing an alphamap (for example for lipstick) in gimp or recolouring from colour swatches in gimp. Is there an interest for how-tos like this?

joandsarah77 16th Aug 2018 2:42 PM

@AnMal there was no reply button showing for you? That thread is open and you should be able to post on it.

There is always an interest for tutorials, especially up to date ones. Older ones have either had the programs changed making them more confusing or had pictures disappear.

hmm, you only have 2 posts, which may be why. Once you have 5 posts, try again.

AnMal 10th Sep 2018 1:39 PM

... And here I am, after 5 posts, with a working reply button . And I come bearing links! I did what I should have done before posting first time around: a proper search outside MTS to see what was really missing. And after those searches I realised I don't really have to write up new tutorials, that would only be repeating what others have already done better. So, instread I post some links that could be of use for anyone who wants to start image editing in Gimp for siims purposes. Note that the information in the links may still be too advanced for you if you've never used an image editiing program- If you're all new to image editing you could join a Gimp forum to get the basic tips and tricks and some hand-holding first!

A general note: Most of the newer tutorials are written for Gimp 2.8, which is the version I use most myself and the one I specifically recommend for a beginner. 2.10 is out now but in its first shaky stages. If you have 2.10, not enough has changed to make it really confusing - you will find the general transformations (scale, shear, rotate, etc) under one tool icon and some of the menu items are labelled differently, but not so differently you can't figure out what is what. Also, when you look for tutorials on Gimp for sims online, it's better to look at tutorials written for sims 3 or 4, as those are usually written for Gimp 2.8. Sims 2 tutorials tend to be older and written for outdated Gimp versions and the actual image editing process is much the same no matter what version of the game you want to create for.

IaKoa's tutorials - Not one, but many tutorials, some usiing Gimp with good explanations. IaKoa also posted Pooklet's colours as Gimp curves, and gives a good explanation on how to use curve presets in Gimp. Tutorials were written for Gimp 2.8.
Making patterned walls in Gimp (for sims4) - Skip all the sims 4-specific parts and just watch the Gimp parts if you've never tried to create walls using Gimp. Useful and simply explained.
How to recolour a CAS item (for sims 4) in Gimp - describes a simple recolour made with Gimp. Again, good for beginners.
Recolouring using palette and colour swatches in Gimp - Another way to make recolours, a bit more involved than the first. This is much the same process I would use for the same type of project.
Adding shading/highlighting to a texture in Gimp - Something I've done a lot to make for example crown moulding for walls in Gimp. Easy enough tutorial to understand.

There are many more well written tutorials out there too, these are just some that I can recommend.

This is a really useful thread, but I noticed that some of the tutorials are actually threads with the tutorial as the first post. I think if the thread owner asks a moderator to move the thread to the tutorials forum suited to it's subject then the links to the tutorial show on the thread owners profile. This won't work for the offsite tutorials of course

Example Profile: http://www.modthesims.info/member.php?u=42165 - click on the creativity tab.

topp 11th Sep 2018 11:47 AM

I remember asking for some of my tutorials to be moved to appropriate sections (because I was hunting for that tutorials badge back in the day ), but mods didn't know where to put mine. So, they remained on the general board.

Charity 11th Sep 2018 1:27 PM

I didn't want proper tutorials, as they can go in the tutorials forum. Just ones that were in the middle of threads and could get lost.

Yea, I see the purpose, that was why I pointed out that the ones that are threads could go in the tutorials forum if moved. Of course, if nobody knows where to put the tutorials once written then this thread is a good spot to link them in.

I had another suggestion for the links in the first post, did you know that if you click on the # next to the post number then you get a link like below?

http://www.modthesims.info/showpost...88&postcount=39

That opens the post in a new tab in the browser.

I have one here about fixing general problems when playing UC - it is a sticky post (I was very flattered to see that ) - in the help section, but in case somebody else needs it: http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=614833 - if you want to add that one, Charity.

Charity 16th Sep 2018 5:50 PM

Thanks for the tip on post numbers.

Added the new tutorial.

Should I keep the tutorials here that are proper tutorials with their own threads or should I delete them?

Bulbizarre 3rd Dec 2018 10:52 AM

I'm not sure if this belongs here, but I posted a few extra steps to try before doing a 50/50. I can't imagine I'm the only person who hates doing them.

Here's a few things that I've worked on that I think are a bit hard to find.

This is part of a tutorial, but, I think, still a bit hard to find. It's on changing the models of objects, but this part is adding that capability to a modded object that doesn't have it already - for example, it tells how to change the model of Larky's Semester Tester from the giant apple sculpture to something more suitable for your lot. http://www.modthesims.info/showthre...511#post5489511

Here's another on how to make your sim parents act like better parents with a cocktail of mods that stop them putting babies on the floor, etc.
http://www.modthesims.info/showthre...587#post5358587

This is a link to Moo's Tutorial on GridAdjuster for making a no-slope basement, which is surprisingly difficult to find as it's rather buried in the thread...
http://www.modthesims.info/download...894#post3180894
and a link to a post I did that makes the math required in that tutorial a bit easier to figure out.

Thanks. I added all of them except the first one, because I want the ones hidden in threads, not the ones in the tutorials forum.

This is also a very informative thread that I think fits here. I asked how to grab information from the game so that it can be sorted in a spreadsheet and after a few false starts, we got that answer.

I want to say that I'm really glad you did this. I find important tutorials and info buried all the time.

This might be already known to many of you, but I personally fell on this recently. I thought it was worth posting in here, as it gives quite beautiful results!

I had to try it of course, how would I know otherwise right?
First pic is the random sim.
Second pic is after all the slider craziness.
Third one is my result.

Believe me, many of those are hard to find, too. It might be nice to say in the first post that some harder to find threads are posted in the discussion or something, because there are some great things there as well.

Here's a mini - tute I did on how to make an empty pool/basement using Grid Adjuster. http://www.modthesims.info/showthre...190#post5500190

Charity 22nd Feb 2019 3:35 AM

Is that tutorial different from the two tutorials on grid adjuster and basements that I already have in the first post?

I once saw a mini-tutorial on fixing the OFB shelf glitch (where glitched custom objects placed on an OFB shelf teleport to the corner of the lot when restocked). It involved changing a few values in SimPE. Does anybody know where it is?

@Charity, HugeLunatic taught me how to make a custom garage door rotatable:

1. Open up the "Function - Init - Common" bhav of the door you want to edit.
2. Find the line that restricts direction perpendicular to street (it's usually the last) example: "0x15 (21): [prim 0x0002] Expression (My flag field 2 Set Flag Literal 0x0007)"
3. Click on the pop up wizard (hammer & sickle button) and change "set flag" to "clear flag".
4. Commit File, save, & test.

Not really a tutorial, more like a quick take on how to get rid of strays showing up on edited CAS lots (in a thread of a mod that gets rid of freezing Sims on custom CAS lots as well!):
https://modthesims.info/download.ph...080#post5872080

FranH 16th Jan 2023 2:45 PM

My two cents worth, even when it's not a tutorial:

In order to hide any lot from the Lot Bin that's a 'staple' lot (such as the vacation hotels), rename the lot to add ".off" to the ending.

It will not show up in the lot bin.

This is useful when you're playing a themed hood.
