Auto Mechanics Career
cloned from Science
GUID: 0x0042CB1E
linked University majors: Physics, Auto Mechanics
focused skills: mechanical, body, logic

Job Levels:
1. Shop Clean-Up
Hours: 09:00 - 14:00, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday | Wages: $200/day
-- Putting away wrenches isn't exactly your dream job, but at least it will help you familiarize yourself with the layout of the garage and where things are kept. Maybe someday soon you'll be using those wrenches, instead of just putting them away.

Chance Card: While cleaning up the shop after the last customer of the day, you find a loose diamond ring on the floor among the clutter. You didn't notice it before, so you're fairly certain it must have been dropped by the last customer, who is still in the parking lot. Do you run to give the ring to that customer, or do you turn it in to the garage manager in the hopes that someone will claim it?

2. Tow-Truck Driver
Hours: 09:00 - 14:00, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday | Wages: $300/day
-- Finally, you're out of the shop and into the fresh air.... and the rain, and snow, and blistering sun. But hey! You're wearing a real uniform with your name sewn onto it. And nothing beats the grateful looks on the faces of those poor stranded motorists, huddled in a downpour at the side of the road, when your big truck pulls into sight.

Chance Card: You've pulled up to another disabled car at the side of a long, deserted highway. You spot the trouble right away: a flat tire and a young mother with two toddlers. It's a very simple fix, and you're sure you could do it yourself and avoid the hour-long drive back to the garage with two screaming toddlers in your cab, but repair really isn't in your job description. Do you fix the flat and send the woman on her way, or do you follow regulations, load up the car, and drive the mother and her brood back to your garage?

3. Tire Changer
Hours: 09:00 - 14:00, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday | Wages: $400/day
-- You're still driving a tow truck, but now you're authorized to solve simple problems like flat tires, empty gas tanks, and keys locked in cars. You're still pretty low on the totum pole at the garage, but the stranded motorists you help think you're the greatest thing since the Genie Lamp.

Chance Card: Changing a tire on a steep sidestreet in the heart of old SimFrancisco, the old tire rolls away from you, bouncing and careening down the hill. Do you run down the hill after the tire, waving your arms and yelling to warn the other drivers, or do you shrug your shoulders, put the spare on, and offer to replace the tire and rim at your shop?

4. Oil & Lube
Hours: 09:00 - 14:00, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday | Wages: $500/day
-- In & out in 15 minutes or less. Perhaps a bad thing for your love life, but definitely a good thing for a tune-up artist like yourself. Also, you get to work with hot oil. Sounds more exotic than it really is, doesn't it?

Chance Card: The next car that comes in is a shiny new Hunka. The garage crew whistles as you ease it into the shop and up onto the ramps. But, being distracted by the excitement of having such a fine automobile in the shop, you forget to chock the wheels, and the car rolls off the ramps and slams into the door of the garage, damaging the car and the door. Do you admit to the garage manager that you were responsible, or do you blame it on a co-worker who just left for lunch?

5. Motorcycle Mechanic
Hours: 09:00 - 14:00, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday | Wages: $600/day
-- Finally! There's "Mechanic" in your job title. It's the title you've been waiting for. Sure, motorcycle engines are smaller, but at least you're a legitimate mechanic instead of just a garage flunkie.

Chance Card: Test-driving the classic Harley you just repaired, you can't help but take a little joyride that isn't stictly required as part of the test drive. Along a glorious stretch of deserted highway, you come upon a couple of teenagers broken down at the side of the road. From their panicked expressions, you get the idea they're skipping class to make out on this lover's lane. But you're somewhere you're not supposed to be as well. Do you stop and help them, or drive by and return the motorcycle to avoid getting caught?

6. Auto Mechanic
Hours: 09:00 - 14:00, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday | Wages: $700/day
-- The engines are bigger, and smokier, but you've made it all the way to genuine Auto Mechanic. It can only get better from here.

Chance Card: When giving an estimate for a repair, you forget to include the price of a small but vital part needed to complete the repair. When you discover your mistake, do you stop work, ring up the customer, and advise him of the mistake and corrected balance, or do you pay for the part out of your own pocket, knowing it was your own mistake for leaving the charge out of the estimate?

7. Garage Manager
Hours: 09:00 - 14:00, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday | Wages: $800/day
-- You're not working with engines anymore, you're working with people. Office politics was never your forte, but you've earned enough rank to be able to assign the really nasty jobs to someone else.

Chance Card: One of the garage crew just isn't up to par. He takes longer than anyone else to complete tasks, and does sloppy work. Do you fire him and hire someone else who can do the job better, or take your own time to work with this employee to improve his job performance?

8. Diesel Mechanic
Hours: 09:00 - 14:00, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday | Wages: $900/day
-- Don'tcha just love the smell of fresh diesel exhaust in the morning? These guys talk tough, they live tough, and they always insist on buying your drinks at the bar after you've hauled their loads out of the ditch.

Chance Card: One afternoon, after you've changed tires on another big rig, the trucker insists on buying your lunch at the local trucker bar. While you're in the bar, chatting it up with your trucker buddies, a motorcycle gang struts in, talking trash. The tension boils over into a full-on bar brawl. Do you jump into the fray to help out your buddies, or tuck tail and run?

9. Airplane Mechanic
Hours: 09:00 - 14:00, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday | Wages: $1,000/day
-- You set your goals in the clouds, now you work on engines that go there. Nothing beats the rush of hearing the big engines roar to life, and watching the planes take off because of something you knew how to do.

Chance Card: While doing a routine check for a medical flight, transporting a critically ill child, you discover an electrical glitch with some minor cabin lights. Do you delay the flight and fix the electrical problem, or clear the flight and make a note to repair the problem after the child has been transported to the hospital?

10. Master of the Torque Wrench
Hours: 09:00 - 14:00, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday | Wages: $1,100/day
-- If it has an engine, you can fix it. The name sewn onto your custom-fit coveralls says simply "Gearhead". You have your own monogrammed tool set, and your face is on jars of waterless hand cleaner everywhere.

Chance Card: A brand new tool manufacturer wants you to endorse their product in a low-budget commercial, and gives you stock in the company just for considering their offer. Do you help out this up-and-coming company by attaching your solid reputation to their product, or do you decline, fearing damage to your image if the company turns out to be a bust?

This career was developed with the invaluable help of my daughter, as both she and her husband are 'gear-heads'. She insisted that the hours and days of the week for this career be during school hours, so there would be no need for your working parent Sims to hire a nanny.

The career reward is the Maxis HotRod Hauler Chop Socky Special, publicly available on the Exchange. As such, this career requires either Nightlife, or a later EP along with the Driveway and Garage Set.

This career has been fully tested in-game. It has its own GUID, and will not overwrite any other career.
