Yes, you're right, it doesn't work any longer. However, Rosesims2 also has a cigarette accessory, but I can't link it directly. Just go to Rosesims2 site and go to Page 18 of the Accessory page in the Sims 3 section, and you'll see it.

Thank you so much for creating such a great character ... He is so full of life and so masculine, which can be really hard to find in custom made male sims! I can't wait to play with him in my game. :-)
