I Buy. I Game. I Mod. Stop Stereotyping. Start Listening.

(After reading two articles this week about misogyny in the gaming world, one linked from Mootilda's MTS journal, I wrote this and posted it on facebook. I decided to post it here as well.)
I Buy. I Game. I Mod. Stop Stereotyping. Start Listening.
A few days ago, I read an article by a feminist gamer, professionally aligned with a feminist organization, who voiced her disappointment at the lack of female protagonists offered by the latest version of whatever gaming platform (can't remember). It makes sense that a feminist gamer would be disappointed, right? It also made sense to me that she would discuss this disappointment to a gaming forum/site. Predictably, the several of the responses ranged from C*** to "It's cause girls don't play games" to "STFU and don't post this on gaming forums." I read these comments and rolled my eyes. I realize that some of those commenters are young, live in isolated worlds of their own, or were just trolling. Maybe a couple of them were actually female. Others simply have skewed views when it comes to what modern women/girls are/do/want/like etc. And then this morning, while reading a different article, I come across these links to some interesting recent figures:
From 2012 Sales, Demographics, and Usage Data; Essential Facts about the Computer and Video Game Industry.
Of the most frequent game purchasers, 52% are male and 48% are female.
Women 18 or older represent a significantly greater portion of the
game-playing population (30%) than boys age 17 or younger (18%)
As of 2011, the average age of a video game player is approximately 37 (ESA, 2011), with 29% of players being over the age of 50.
The gender gap in video games has also shifted to approximately 42% of video game players now being female, a 2% increase from 2010 (ESA, 2010; ESA, 2011).
Aaaannnd requoted from The State of the Video Gamer by Nielson (2009)
Breakdown of WOW players by gender and age:
Male 12-17: 11.37%
Male 18-24: 10.71%
Male 25-54 : 27.30%
Female 12-17: 4.38%
Female 18-24: 3.73%
Female 25-54: 24.94%
So: Males = 49.38 %
Females = 33.05%
(I assume the 21.3% left over is of unknown gender or not in the listed age ranges)
****Sorry, Gaming Boys' Club, what did you say? I couldn't hear you over the guffawing of my AWESOME GAMING GIRLS' CLUB!!! ****
Also from http://psychology.wichita.edu/surl/.../videogames.asp
The video game industry has certainly taken notice to the growing number of female video game players. Some game companies (e.g., Nintendo, Zynga) have started to develop and publish more video games and video game-related products specifically targeting female players. Unfortunately, when companies develop video games and products with females in mind they often base their game designs on stereotypical gender roles. For example, many game companies believe that female players are attracted to games with the color pink; fashion, shopping, and dating games; and that they dislike games with violence, gore, and complex scenarios. This thinking is likely to be oversimplified, misleading, and reflects the stereotypical beliefs of the male dominated gaming industry and not necessarily the true interests of female game players (Stredder, 2001; Jenson & de Castell, 2007).

Medieval and Fantasy Custom Careers: Explanations and Justifications

Explanations and Justifications
Now that I'm finished with school, I can return to making these careers. Below is a very long list of the careers I hope to make.
I realize a couple of these careers, like gardener, already exist in the game, but I despise self-employed careers; I want my sims to go to work and be done with it. Also, these careers will be geared specifically to medieval/fantasy descriptions. So the banker career, for example, will have level titles like exchequer and coin counter.
I know it doesn't seem to make sense for the grocer to be at the restaurant instead of the grocery. My justification is to keep the available rabbit holes to a minimum so NPC sims will have fewer modern careers to snatch up. Hence, healer at city hall, so as to avoid the modern medical career. The grocery I envision as a food prep location and the restaurant as the town market. The bookstore I envision as a polluting crafts location and the school as artistry and clean crafts, but I think I will actually reverse this.
All rabbit holes are Base Game. Using the rabbit hole rugs and doors, you can build whatever structures you like on these lots; I plan to use multiple small lots of the same rabbit hole type to prevent queue overload. To use these careers, you have to have the rabbit hole lot already in place before putting the career in the packages file or it won't show up. It's easy enough to remove the career, run your town without it and quit, then replace the career.
These careers will be basic and will not have chance cards?events? and all that, just skill requirements. They will be Base Game compatible, some with alternate Pets versions.
This list is tentative and subject to change. I cannot predict how fast I will get to churn these out. Also, some of these careers may not be accepted by MTS for being a wee bit risque (I plan to use cheeky innuendo and not blunt vulgarity). I will be happy to put a "Cheeky Innuendo Alert" n the file download page to warn off the pure of mind.
I welcome questions, ideas, and critiques!

Salary and Status Classes

Salary and Status Classes
I want these careers to reflect Medieval class structures. Since MTS requires comparable wages/salaries to EA games. I’ve set the Level 10 minimum salary class to $3300 weekly since the Mystic Fortune Teller Level 10 is $3350 weekly. The highest EA salary is around 20,000 weekly (I think); I’ll be setting my maximum around $10,000 to 20,000. The actual wages of individual careers may be higher or lower than expected due to leisure time, supply/demand, ick factors, and danger considerations.

Soldiers & Judicials
For Politics and War, the wages are lower since they are the servants of the realm, but technically their status is higher. This assumes provided with food and clothing by the government, and that they are honest and honorable. Most likely they are corrupt and will accept bribes. *HINT: Cheat Code*
