Round 4 - Big complexes
In this final round we want to see you stretch your wings and build something big! Style is up to you, but we want to see something that screams apartment. That means at least two floors, with units on top of each other, and at least 6 units. We know some people dislike having non-playable neighbours, but in this round we want to see something intended to experience all the aspects of apartments and that means non-controllable neighbors! There's no need to go gigantic and build 10 story buildings. If you want to do 6 small units that's up to you. By big we mean room for many households. There has to be at least one unit that is on top of another, but if you want to have units that are two-stories as well that's up to you.
Requirements - Must have at least 6 units
- Minimum 2 floors (ground floor and foundation is considered the same level for this purpose)
- At least one unit that is on top of another unit
- Fully furnished units
My Art Deco skyscraper has 14 stories, but I can't fit 6 units in it... The penthouse alone will take the top 5! I guess I'll go back to the drawing board. But I will keep my build so far for future completion.
Nice Rachel we're having. My Simblr! Now actually working!
So I've talked to the judges and we'll need to extend judging round a little bit longer. With all the stuff that's happened I had completely forgotten I need to do host bonus which means I need a couple of days to finish. Ellu has had a family tragedy and is behind because of this, which I'm sure all of us understand. Golden also needs a little more time.
How do you guys feel? Do you want round 4 end to also be moved forward so you have one week between scores and end of round, or do you feel you've got judges opinions pinned down by now?
Have gone over posts and updated scores that needed to be updated for round 2. Added 5 points back to stitching on Cat's behalf, and half a point to phantom from Golden. If I missed any please let me know.

Speaking of required pics, I didn't realize I went over! @gummilutt, do you know if I had pictures that weren't really required, or if I just went over with my unit pictures? To confirm, it's 32 plus the front, back, ground floor of the entire lot, then a floor plan of each floor in every structure?
One floor plan shot of every floor of your structure. Structure in singular. If you choose to do separate buildings that is a design choice, and it's up to you to figure out how to show your buildings to the judges in the allotted screenshots. That's why there's an additional 8 shots, so that you have a few extra to use for whatever unexpected design you might decide to do. I will clarify the guidelines so it's more obvious.

I see some of you are low on motivation. Keep in mind the unique furnishing is one point. If you feel it's draining you too much then just make them identical. In the end that one point you lose is a whole lot less than if you don't finish at all
Ah, okay! Knew I missed something somewhere--thanks gummilutt. I'm for extending the deadline, too, if only because I know I used some feedback to change how I did things in later submissions.

*groan* LOL!
Thanks! I like the red one best... I haven't made the family for that one yet. Actually, none of the family units are purposefully occupied yet - they're all filled with single townies - they must like cheap rent too!

I can only mash the 'funny' button once, Karen but, that deserved a few more! LOL!
Hey!!! ETA: Would anyone know how to help BloodravenD over on my SUD Apartment upload? I don't know what else to say to try and help her - but, some of you have way more experience at building/playing apartments than I do. Thanks!

Ok, well, September is fast approaching and I have a busy month ahead so I wanted to get this out of the way (for better or worse!)
I present Cliffside (cos it happens to be near a cliff), an apartment building of 6 units, pool, gym, rooftop bar, etc. All units have smoke alarm, trash chutes and phones. Only two phones are in shot. Most of the others are on walls. Again, I have not used burglar alarms, although I probably should have put at least one on the ground floor (too late now). The postbox is in the corridor near the entrance. The rubbish bin is at the front left corner, screened off.

Floor plans
(Sorry I had lights on for some of the shots and forgot at other times.)
More of the building:
Foyer
Pool
Gym
Outside
Rooftop
The units:
Unit 1 designed for couple with young teenage boy.
Unit 2 intended for a couple of friends. (Unfortunately the cat wallpaper got cut out of shot )
What looks like a window to the balcony is actually a cc door. It's the same in unit 5.
Unit 3 for an older couple
Unit 4 for another couple
An example of one of the bathrooms
Unit 5
Unit 6 for recently divorced parent and teenage daughter
Sadly, I think some pictures on what might look like bare walls got cut out of shot (and not always visible on floor plan).
Just spoke to Gummi a few minutes ago...
Gummi is sick right now. I am not sure when scores will be up, but please extend just a bit more patience with her right now. Thank you. :lovestruc
Apartments in this tall building boast great views, either of the town ("Dry-side") or the ocean ("Ocean-side"). There are 6 units total with two of them being penthouses. The units vary in layout from floor to floor with different households in mind. The layouts have similar elements such as abundant natural light through many clustered ceiling-to-floor windows as well as interior schemes of teal and bright green - colors to bring out the fresh and tropical feel of the location and surrounding elements of the ocean and lush terrain. This, combined with majority of neutral whites with black accenting on appliances and plumbing, makes for a distinct modern look to it as well.
Parts of the building have stone walls for structural reinforcement that create a harmony of material that keeps the interior design from being overly boring or too busy. From the front and back exterior, you can see the building looks to be split into thirds with white plaster, beige stone, and brown bamboo siding that extends into the outside, under-window flower beds. The feel of the building is luxurious and yet casual, expensive but relaxed. The building utilizes solar panels on the roof to lower energy and rent costs, and the climate provides ample sunlight!
Bathrooms for each unit carry either a bright blue or green theme in flooring tile that carries into the wall behind each sink. The shower areas are encased in a dark charcoal tile to match the dark accents of the plumbing. The dark color also contrasts nicely against the pop of bright color and white neutral of the remaining walls.
-FLOOR PLANS-
Overall Property Plan - First/Ground Floor
(Since it was a long property I rotated it, then cropped so the front is on the right at street side)
Second Floor
Third Floor
Fourth Floor
Fifth Floor
-RENT COSTS- Ranges $1,885 - $4,765
-BACK OF LOT-
*Notes about pics:
1. I pushed the chairs in to show how they would look in a live-in space but pulled them out for play testing so they were usable.
2. I allocated 4 of the 8 'extra structure pics' to be used as 2 extra pictures each on the Penthouse units since they are larger. So Regular units have 4 images each but the pethouses use 6 total, leaving 4 for public spaces.
PUBLIC AREAS
The first floor of the building is entirely public space for the residents; there is an open gym with a variety of weight machines plus treadmills for cardio, a coffee station, billiard table, ample comfortable seating, two gender-neutral bathrooms for quick access to toilet or shower after a workout session or a coffee binge and an office area with a computer. The back of the building has a landscaped outdoor, but shaded social area, under a custom, intricate trellis-style roof for eating and drinking. The Landlord will grill on Saturdays and there's an in-house bar server available 24-hours to order drinks from and listen to any troubles one might have. Mailboxes and the bill drop is located out the front next to the garbage can in the small indenture of the building.
Mirrors are another decorative motif found throughout the building that create the illusion of more space; the public area makes use of them in the gym and on the walls in the billiards area.
All public floor areas contain a trash chute - this makes it so the Landlord can easily discard any unwanted and untouched old newspapers. Residents can also dump their trash here right outside their door when they take it out instead of trekking all the way down to the front of the building.
Access to each floor can be had either through taking the elevator or spiral stairwell.

-PLAYTESTING-
The flowers on the stage tool, in my testing, never seem to 'wilt' or die for that matter due to lack of water. I don't know if it's something about the stage tool that makes them forever bloom or what but environments never go down. The bush plants do continue to grow but again, no one is complaining because the game sees this as a different level, even outdoors so it doesn't impact environment. If you should happen to get annoyed at overgrown bushes the inaccessible mod by Cyjon allows them to trim it themselves through their window.
The first two floors' bedrooms do not share apartment walls so there is no chance for disturbances during sleep. The two Dry-side penthouse bedrooms do share walls with the other penthouse and so does one Ocean-side Penthouse bedroom but there is enough items arranged in front of the space to block out sounds so sims will sleep throughout the night.
I originally used custom 'Helios' glass doors to access the balconies however these doors proved wonky due to their creation pre-AL. I would get errors when trying to changelotzoning and even if I managed to get it to convert through tricking the game, when play testing the first apartment would be considered public space entirely for whatever random reason. It was just a very frustrating, odd experience. In the end I traded them out for the vanilla sliding door for doubles and the matching 'falling water' door for the singles in the penthouses.
-CUSTOM CONTENT- Windows:

-"Fallingwater" seamless window2-left by Prida (windows facing balconies)

-Modern Fence High (White) by lirunchik @ TSR (for balconies)
-Bumper Crop Redwood Fence 3t2 conversion by Amovitam (perimeter fence)
Note: Combined Vanilla Items (not cc!):
1A coffee table
1B TV/table, nightstand in corner with 'potted plant'
Lamp with fan in first four units' bedrooms.
Various plants and crafted vases:
Entry of 3A, Next to computer desk in 3B, Bedroom of 2B, etc
Various bookshelves turned around and used for backing or deco elements in 3A and 3B and 1B units
Uh oh! My social bar is low - that's why I posted today.
Judge 1: Did you mean to have the lobby have the ground cover from the sidewalk carry over indoors? It may seem like overkill to some, but it was smart to include lots of spiral staircases since it is one Sim at a time on those things. My favorite apartment of yours in this one is the sports friends, however I am having problems seeing phones in some apartments. Everything in your units is spaced well and makes sense, and I do really enjoy your pool area - it really does give a relaxing tropical vibe. I personally love your creativeness on the building "gargoyles". Thank you for inner and outer community spaces, they're so nice to have! I do think the lighting for the pool area may be a bit lacking in the evenings. I appreciate the decorated patios as well.
Judge 2: Decorating is still really hard for me to judge - on your entry. Everything is such a mish mash of styles, textures and colors! I’m sure there are some people in the world who live that way, but I have a real hard time believing every resident does. Besides all the jumble though, I can tell you took care to ’theme’ each room appropriately; and I can imagine such an eclectic group of characters would be fun to play with. I’m not a huge fan of the ’belted’ exterior paint job - someone else did that in the previous round, I didn’t care for it then either. I do like all the common areas! There is certainly a lot of things to keep your sims busy on this lot. Thank you
Judge 3: Loved everything exept the stipe outdoor walls.

Judge 1: Your backyard community space and landscaping are both simple and nice, also well spaced. Is there any other lighting provided under the awning? The apartments are definitely uniquely decorated which does help make the floorplan easier to follow since there is a lot going on. One bathroom in many of the apartments seems harsh with so many people. I think even an additional half bath in some of them would make mornings just that much easier for the residents. I enjoy all your apartments for their individuality, but apartment 3 and 5 are my favorites!
Judge 2: Thank you for clearly stating that the ”necessaries” - phone, trash, alarm - are taken care of. This building is a literal maze! I’m having real trouble telling which rooms go to which units. And, the one unit with all the crazy carpeting has - well…, too much crazy carpeting! I see a couple of tight spots which could easily make for ’bottle-neck’ sim stompies. If you’re going to use the same ceiling lamp all over the place, I would prefer seeing the recessed canister light as it is far less intrusive. You do have a few communal items/areas - I would like to see more. Thank you
Judge 3: Very lovely looking house.
Backyard lawn, maybe a pathway to the tub and some groundcover under the swing, after all the lawn won't survive as perfect in those places. I love the use of color in one unit, just not all the colors match so well together.

Judge 1: Great curb appeal, Karen! I like your cute and cozy pool area. I like the size of your rooms and the layout of the apartments. Thank you for the decorated balconies, I just wish they had some lighting for evening. I'm happy to see more phones included! Great apartment coordination and room sizes. I find the little rooms by the stairs to be such cute additions to the lot - almost like a maintenance staff room. Very cool that you left them a car to work on, and ultimately drive.
Judge 2: Another modern style build from you with a bright pop of color - blue, this time. You are on a roll here Great job! I think you’ll find that the low fence you used will cut off access to the mailbox - I didn’t deduct for it, but please check it to be sure. I love all the balconies - they are everywhere! But, I think you maybe went a bit overboard with the trash chutes - I see they are everywhere too. LOL! I do love that you included a sink for the outdoor ”kitchen” - the landlord should be able to throw some terrific parties out there! Do the oven mits hung on the oven doors block access? It looks nice, but I’ve never tried it… Great job on this build. Thank you!
Judge 3: Great apartment. Entry hallway to 2 units is only one tile wide what may cause stomping.

Judge 1: I like the courtyard, it is so green and cute! Thank you for common areas and a BBQ spot - definitely plenty of space for the pool and dancing. I think the huge window is a nice touch to the common room. It's great to see you included lots of outside lighting both on the courtyard and the balconies. Your room sizes are great (I think) and it is always nice to see some decorated balconies. A suggestion would have been to maybe move the mailbox inside to where the common area stairs are.
Judge 2: The landscaping is very nice - but, I would like to see more dirt (TP) in the flower beds by the common stairwell area entrance. (The green grass doesn’t look right to me, being behind the hedge/border plants.) The units are decorated appropriately for the sims you envision living there. I really like all the common areas - I think a sim would be happy to live here. I love the views of the trees - your vision is well achieved here, I think. Thank you
Judge 3: Great common area and lovely landscaping. Some of the rooms are very well decorated, some left pretty empty. I can understand how big job it is to decorate so many units.

Judge 1: Your apartment building has such a Southern stately charm to it that is just irresistible! I like that the residents have plenty to do and ample spaces to mingle with neighbors in different ways - I was surprised to see gardening plots and grand piano, as they don't get used very much. The bed in the living room of Unit A is a bit jarring, but the apartments of these LFT grads indeed do correspond well with how you decorated them. I also think you maximized the space without it seeming too cramped. I also took notice of your decorated balconies (yay) and that cute geometic rug you made.
Judge 2: This looks like the dorm I lived in! Very ”Southern” I like that you have both indoor and outdoor common areas. And, each unit has at least one verandah. I love that the mailbox is inside - others have done that before in this contest, and I failed to mention it, but I really like indoor apartment mailboxes! LOL! Thank you for ’splainin’ about the dressers in unit A - I almost marked down a half point for playability there… In Unit B - I don’t like that you have to go through the kitchen to access the one bedroom, that could’ve been planned better. (IMHJO) As for unit D - ”Oh!” (yes, I said it out loud) those are money trees! Very interesting and enjoyable backstories - each unit is well decorated for it’s intended vict sim. A+++ for presentation. Thank you
Judge 3: Great job of making big residential lot to apartments!
From outside I get more the feeling of community lot than an apartment. Well done with no extra empty space, but is there a bit too much? Like the gym where the machines are all next to eacother.

Judge 1: Yay for solar panels - I love seeing them used! Such clever creativity in combining items and I'm so happy to see community space appropriate to your desert climate. The setting is lovely, the apartments are well outfitted to their inhabitants and the apartment names definitely fit the decor. Very welcoming entryways and furnished cozy patios. I enjoy the beam used in the bedroom over the desk/closet and the kitchen design. It's a wonderful build, Charmful!
Judge 2: Common areas FTW!!! YAY! And, thank you for mentioning the fence you used for the patios - I gotta get that one, it’s gorgeous!
I have to say - to EVERYBODY (I hope all ya’ll are listening!) - If a builder were to build an apartment complex, this example is what I expect to see: the builder obviously bought the appliances/plumbing fixtures in bulk - they are all the same brand. And the floor plan for each unit is the same (though possibly mirrored.) I would go one further and include cabinets and overhead light fixtures in the builders bulk bundle. Of course, within each ’brand’ color options are available, use them to make the units different. (And I know, when renovating an older building into an apartment complex - the floor plan option goes out the window - but the rest holds true!)
OK, *deep breath* rant over. Thank you, Charmful, for presenting such an organized build I love the desk/closet ’built-in’ areas and the rock walls - great ideas! Your presentation is also spectacular. Thank YOU
Judge 3: Love the outside area so much! I would love to live there myself. Only thing bothers me is the brick wall in the kitchens are the same in every unit.

Judge 1: I'm not seeing any lights in the front ot the building, am I missing them? It took me a few to get accustomed with the floorplan with so much going on, but I managed. Such a unique build to see and gain some military housing knowledge from too. Your apartments are exceptionally well planned and you can see how much knowledge and thought went into them. Your common areas make sense, have bathrooms, and are extremely complementary to your build. The patio BBQ area, pool area and training course are all just perfect. Thank you for providing both stairs and elevators to move between floors. I really like units 1 and 3 the most, although all of them are wonderful.
Judge 2: Thank you very much for the ’guided’ tour and thorough explanation of everything. My hubs was military (Navy) before we met - I don’t know much about military life, but this all looks like a believable build to me. I love your laundry machines - great idea! The ’mustard’ paint - I hear ya there - that’s very similar to why I hate orange so much. Great job! Thank you
Judge 3: Love the militaryfeeling this lot has. I get the feeling maybe the community areas are bit too large, I see you have fit several similar items there to avoid the empty space.

Judge 1: Haha, I love your "everywhere America" approach to this build, because I live in one that is just.like.this. That aside, your apartment is cute and your landscaping all too realistic. Your property is well lit, the apartment sizes are spot on and you managed to even decorate the balconies! I love your community spaces - they are well planned and fit the feel of the property, they're perfect. Despite your apartments all having the same walls and floors, you still managed to inject personality into them, making each one stand out and be unique in their own way, kudos! With so many people in each apartment, two bathrooms is definitely a plus. Fantastic job!
Judge 2: Another perfect example of what an apartment complex should be! (See Charmfuls comments - if I had judged yours first, that ”rant” probably would’ve been in the middle of your comments!) I love the indoor mailbox and all the common area spaces - though a few ’fun’ objects would help. These units are huge - and the price reflects that - but price is not a restriction in this round. Seriously though, why buy a starter house when this complex is in the hood - am I right? I’m not seeing any routing issues… I don’t really care for the bathroom door in the kitchen. If space were tight, and that was the only option, OK - but that’s not the case here. You’ve decorated each unit to reflect their proposed residents. I would like to see the more affluent units to have more items covering up the landlord’s blandness - ie: curtains/quilts that hide bland walls or more area rugs, etc. I’ve lived in many houses that I couldn’t touch - but still managed to make them ’mine’ (curtains are really very handy!) And, I’d also like to see the common areas with different floors - maybe hardwood instead of carpet, and a rubberized floor in the gym area. Overall, great job! Thank you
Judge 3: Lovely looking house!
I know you said the walls are same color in purpose, but white walls with white ceiling and light grey floor is just too white to me. Maybe even the ceiling in a bit different color? Also a lot of empty space at the lobby.

Judge 1: I really love the look of your building and your ground level community space looks so relaxing. I love that you included the Lucky Shrine(?) - hehe, tossing a coin for some extra money or perk never hurts! As always, it's clever to include the sprinklers and everything looks very well lit. I love that there is lots for residents to do on the rooftop, that you thought to include a shower close by and decorated the balconies (squee - garden plots and tea table!). Dual means of transport are also smart to add (stairs and elevator) when you have so many levels, so thanks on that. I don't know if you'd want to include a sprinkler above the BBQ in case some novice tries to cook hot dogs. Unit 1 could have definitely benefited from an additional bathroom with four women. I love the creativity in Unit 4 with using the headboard wall as "hidden" closet space. Your apartments definitely get more refined on the way up, which isn't bad, just something cool that I noticed.
Judge 2: A very ”professional” looking building this time I love all the common area spaces - there’s a lot of stuff for residents to do here. I wish you had kept the wall placement/floorplan the same between units, and used the same brand (different colors) appliances and fixtures. Then it would have been perfect (IMHJO) I prefer the top two units floor plan - bathroom placement - over the bottom two units; and I really don’t like the 2nd unit with 2 bedrooms on one side of the unit - and their bathroom being on the other side of the unit. That could’ve been planned better, I think. Your decorating and landscaping abilities saved you points. Great job! Thank you
Judge 3: Gorgeous looking lot! Two things , are the bookcases behind the grand piano usable? And in most bedrooms there is in my opinion too much stuff in so little space.

Judge 1: Wow, your community spaces are pretty classy and I LOVE them! This is not a place for any low-brow Sims to live with as swanky as your ground floor and fifth floor are. The pool area looks very relaxing and well lit. I found it so funny (in a good way) that your balconies all have an exercise bike to keep fit and the back balcony always has a lounger of some sort. Haha, yes, thank you for both elevators and stairs, especially with a multi-floor build that will have residents coming and going quite often. Did you miss a fire alarm in the Light unit, or am I just not seeing it? Your Earth unit is actually my favorite one! I like the seclusion of the roof space and the solar panels are always welcome, although maybe they could have been hidden behind a fence or half wall? Are there any trash chutes in your hallways? It seems like it would be a heck of a walk to empty the trash compactor so far outside.
Judge 2: A very architecturally interesting build - I like the stone/wood/blocky look of it all. You gave us several really nice common areas; I would like to see a pool table and/or poker table in place of a few of the seating areas. A few ’fun’ things are fun to have around! I love that you put the mailbox inside, and I really like all the indoor plants. Do the split-level stairs affect item placement in the upper units? Can sims move items/rearrange the furniture in those units? I don’t really understand the hedges in the units… I mean, they look nice, and I like indoor plants, but why hedges - and why in every unit? I feel like I’m missing something. I really wish you had kept the wall placement/floorplan the same between units (please see Charmful’s comments.) In a build like this there is no need to change up the floor plan for each unit. You should decorate them differently - which you did. I love that you used a lot of mirrors in your design - mirrors can visually open up a small area - but they also make it difficult to make dimensional sense of some of the room pictures. It’s hard to tell if it’s a mirror or it’s an open section of wall - be aware of that when taking pictures in the future. Thank you
Judge 3: Very iunique build, love the ouside look! Hudge lobby area with lots of seating. Only one bathroom , even in the 3 bedroom unit, maybe one half bath would of made the bathroom traffic easyer.
Let's just say it's not a good summer for me. Will most likely be somewhat absent again, need to go back to my city to see my doctor and figure out what to do about all this. Will have my laptop with me and if I can check in I will but don't have much room in my brain for much more than just getting through right now. But round 3 scores finally out, which means round 4 ends in exactly 7 days from when the most was made. I will add a timer to main post.
Will update main post score board when I can, too tired for it now will just end up breaking the formatting.
