Default installation bug and the patch
When I first got University home I was sadly disappointed to find out it wouldn't install on my machine. After it installed the EP it began to upgrade game files like "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\Objects" and it encountered an error and aborted installation.

Should anyone have this problem it is because of the patch Maxis released in December, not hacks. The old patch is supposedly incompatible with University. What you will need to do is reinstall the whole game and don't use the patch. Then it will upgrade without problem.

Sorry if this is now common knowlege now and I'm repeating someone elses words but I wish someone told me a while ago when I was trying to figure it out.

umm thats not what i did.... i had to move my downloads folder to somewhere else and install the new update on thesims2.com... apparantly they updated the patch and when you install it without downloads in the game, it works perfectly... i had that same problem, and it took me 2 hours to figure it out, but i think it was worth it

I had the same problem and tried removing my downloads folder and that didnt work. I ended up uninstalling then reinstalling and it worked but when I put my downloads folder back none of the houses would load on so I'm currently playing with a fresh game; no custom content at all.

Ok, so does this mean The Sims University does not work with the recolor/hacks? I am asking because I have read so many different explanations today that I am not even sure I want to bother buying it just yet :-(

I had the patch, and it installed fine for me. quick too. I removed the download folder and put it on my desktop. After the instal I put the downloads back in. Then it gave me problems. It turned out that I had custom careers installed. (my son dled some houses without using the clean installer) Once I got rid of the careers it loaded fine.

Cool thank you for your reply. One more really stupid question. I thought the release date was the 3rd. I reckon I am way off on that one eh? Well at least I got The Sims 2 a day in advance. :-)

Like Katt I moved my dl folder out while installing.
Have it back in now and so far so good. I didnt put any hacks back in as yet. Going to watch the boards for awhile before I try that. But my recolours and new objects seem to be fine.
I also had no problems installing game. Didn't uninstall sims2 and had latest patch. Used default install.

Thanks for the advice, myshinouno. I only had the December patch and encountered "Update" failure when installing University. I uninstalled Sims 2, reinstalled then installed Uni, and now no problem with the install.

A few days ago I moved all of my downloads out and my fav neighborhoods. Then, I reinstalled the game and added the new Patch. Then, I put some of my downloads into the game and played. Today I installed Uni, and so far no problems. It installed very quickly. I don't use any hacks.
