Kid Downtown is a larger project/mod I've started to allow child sims to go Downtown (accompanied by a grown-up) and buy things and eat there. It is meant to make Downtown accessible to child player characters in the game.

It's a large project, because it requires editing over a dozen Downtown objects to add proper child support to them (animations, permissions, etc.). My aim with this project is to use only existing Maxis animations (from Vacation) to get this to work smoothly.

I will post updates about my progress with the project here -- and may release self-contained portions of the mod a piece at a time.

To begin with the project, I have managed to get the teddy bear toy gift from Downtown fully working when children are gift-giving to other kids and adults:



I'm also making headway with kids purchasing toys Downtown.

kenoi, it's an interesting project, but maybe you don't really have to make all of these objects yourself because it seems to me that something like that was already made by Yuppie Sims. Wow, @Dukasha, I think this has it covered fully! You've provided a complete solution. ✅ Yuppie Sims had already done all this hard work, and more! Looking at the files, they'd already covered everything I was planning to cover.

Combining the work of Yuppie Sims and Simania's "Kid-friendly stuff", we already have every possible combination a player would want for customising and expanding their gameplay for child sims in the game.

You simply use the IFF files for the objects you would like your child sims to be able to access in the game (and place them in the correct ExpansionPack folder).

You are welcome, kenoi. I hope you are not disappointed with the fact that the mod you were planning to make was already made by somebody earlier. Maybe you'll create something new and very interesting instead. I love mods for the Sims 1 and always ready to discuss them.

Not at all. 🤗 It means that I can spend my time and energy on other things, preparing and developing other content for our little community. That's how we go forward. I am incredibly glad to see great work done by our community, and very excited when we rediscover lost treasures like this -- especially when so much work has gone into creating content like this. We all chip in, and we keep fixing, expanding, and reinventing the game for us all to enjoy, all the while learning and growing in the creative process. That's what it's about.

So nope, it's no problem at all. I am really glad and grateful that you've shared this with me and everyone who reads this, and that you've let me know this before I've put too much work into doing the same work someone else had already completed wonderfully before me.

There's no point in doing double the work, if it's already been done well.

Okay, testing Yuppie Sims' work, while everything works really well, I can see one big problem with these modded files: they're using the adult animations -- which makes the child sim jump inexplicably up in the air whenever these animations play. My approach was to use native child animations from Vacation to enable kids access to Downtown for this project.

It looks like I'll need to create this mod after all. 🤔

But Yuppie Sims' work certainly helps 👍 -- and it allows for more than my mod will allow for. I'm focused on Downtown, whereas Yuppie Sims' files cover all areas -- including Unleashed's Old Town, and Superstar's Studio Town. And they've already done most of the work for this project.

I will still release a proper, comprehensive mod/package here that uses child animations, and covers Downtown only -- for anyone who uses Vacation as well.

But for most people, I think Yuppie Sims' work covers it all, pretty much.

If you release a mod, it would be great if you featured it on Tumblr or Patreon, perhaps. So that more people can see the mod. I think it is really needed. Thank you for doing this♥️
