Edith - An Advanced Editing Suite for The Sims
I'm starting this thread for anyone who is interested in doing advanced modding/editing in The Sims. This thread is all about Edith, and how to use it.

Maxis' Edith -- their internal software for editing/programming The Sims -- has been released, and this version (1.01) of Edith works with the retail base version of the game (none of the expansion packs). You can download it here:

https://archive.org/details/edith-internal-release

We've discovered that if you install just the base game, you can copy the EXE ("Sims.exe" and/or "Sims_Debug.exe") from Edith into your Sims installation, and this will:

1. Allow the base game to run on Windows 10 and 11.
2. Give you a fully playable base game, and access to all of Edith's advanced editing/programming features to preview and edit anything in the game!

(Big thanks to @Stephanie for this discovery! ⭐🤗 Notes on getting the sound and music working are here.)

So this is a very practical environment for learning how The Sims actually works, for programming new objects and features to add to the game, and for testing things with the base game.

Note that it goes without saying that you should do a backup of your UserData folder(s) before you transition to using the Edith EXEs with your base game installation. In fact it's best to keep an untouched copy of your whole base game installation, just in case anything goes wrong.

Here is an early introductory demonstration of the game, shared by Don Hopkins, that features Edith, and explains how the game is structured, and how the language and programming works in the game:

I will share more as I discover more about what we can do with Edith here, and you're welcome to as well.

Here is some further information and documentation on how to use Edith, and how to program objects for the game (SimAntics):

To open Edith in-game, press the E key on your keyboard while you're on a lot.

(You'll need to run the game in windowed mode with the -w parameter on the game's Windows shortcut. Edith works as separate windows, running next to the main, game window.)

Here are slides/notes from a university lecture on programming for The Sims (where the students used Edith to program objects for the game):

Here are some objects that the students made:

In the Edith version of the game, you don't need to type the money cheat. Simply press the M key on your keyboard to add money to your household.

The Sims files packaged with this Edith version contain some new, never before seen skins. From the looks of them, they were in development, then scrapped for the published release of the game. Some of them actually look very much finished and nice!

There are a number of girl clothes/skins in particular. Child skins are so rare in the original game, even with all the expansion packs installed -- I wonder why they scrapped these. 🤔 Odd choice. Maybe the original game didn't have a lot of child skins because they kept throwing out the ones that were created for some QA reasons. 😅 Seems like it. 🤭

Edit: @Stephanie pointed out to me that these skins are actually the extra skins installed by the retail Livin' Large expansion pack CD, but they are missing from the Complete Edition of the game. This is why I never saw them before. So if anyone wants to grab all the Livin' Large player skins without having to install Livin' Large from the CD, you can grab them from this version of Edith.
