Default something odd going on with cyjon.net
[UPDATE]: Use it with http://, not https.

cyjon.net appears to be down with some weird issues.

The front page simply shows "weimar.ca 2022" while the actual pages throw a 500 error mentioning webmaster@oboluspress.com.

Furthermore, the site certificate is all wrong an NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID (not only is the certificate for www.oboluspress.com, but it had expired in 2022!)

ICANN lookup shows that the site's domain is registered throughout 2027 and also has clientTransferProhibited, so it doesn't seem to be a domain hijacker.

The site (and mods, from a quick test) is accessible through Wayback Machine, thankfully.

Oh that's a shame. It was working around 8-9 hours ago (midnight/1am CEST) because I went to look up a mod description someone mentioned to check if I had it or not.

Is anyone in contact with Cyjon? Is he still active in the community at all?

Check out my thoughts on Psymchology (Sim Psychology) - latest post is on the main six aspirations.

I don't know why some of the older pages don't covert to "HTTPS everywhere" and it's becoming a problem, at least for me-because the newer browsers won't recognize them-considering them to be security issues.

I find that I have to go to another browser to just use MATY, because Pes never updated the site, or the Booty.

I wish they had changed it, but in time, they will disappear, much to our distress.

My browser updated just prior to me noticing this, so I suspect the update might've auto-switched the links to https.

Some sites that are HTTP do enter but they block download unless you click "keep" on the notification. This happens with XMSims and MATY as well and really any site that's HTTP, at least in Chrome. I seriously don't know either, because it can get annoying but also really sad if a site just stops working all in all. Cyjon's site I find is on the verge of this, all old sites are. At least the Wayback Machine exists and archives these.

I remember being able to access the website on my phone (Brave, a Chromium-based browser), but now even after circumventing this warning, I get to the "weimar.ca 2022" text:

Manually re-typing "http:" doesn't seem to work without changing the settings:

For my browser, it's under Settings > Brave Shields & privacy, but I think you can search for the word "HTTP" in any modern-day browser settings now. What worked for me is changing this setting to disabled just to get the site to load at all, however it of course raises some major security and privacy concerns with all the other web activity past cyjon.net.

There's also that function in Mozilla, and I'm not going to disable it just to see some sites I rarely visit. However, I do have a separate browser (from MS of course) that does not have the HTTPS setting, so I can use them when I need to. I just don't like to cruise in the unsafe zone for very long. You can never tell when a site can or will try to hijack your computer (and yes, it does happen) so I try to limit these forays into the danger zone.

Yeah, I had to exempt MATY, Insimenator etc. from my Anti Virus because it kept telling me that they had a suspicious top level domain.

I had to change a setting to properly access leefish.nl with https because they use mixed content (some is sent over http, and others over https).

Is there a way to make Leefish look like it used to?

use http, or look for the option to enable insecure content - in Vivaldi, I click the address bar to access the site settings.

leefish.nl is probably going to go at some point - there's posts on the forums that indicate that nobody has access to the forum's admin panel since Lee's passing

I still can't believe how fast AffinitySims disappeared. Fortunately, there are some archives for some of the downloads, but still.

That's why site admins must make 'in case of' plans for any eventuality-I hope that Delphy has done so. I know that TSR will live forever because they're built that way.

Because site hosts do not care. If it's not being taken care of, it goes down.

There are two other admins of the site (Kethryveris is also one of Tashiketh's). But good question for @Tashiketh !

Remember when Plumbob Keep went down due to Sunni's passing? That is a prime example (in addition to Affinity Sims) of why anyone who owns a website must make contingency plans for who is going to take over if they want the site to continue.

Or as the song says, "Nothing ever lasts forever..".

BTW, this advice also is good for the people who have social media or blogs that are hosted. If you're not around to take of it, it may not be either.

Or even circumstances out of control. @kestrellyn's older mods almost disappeared due to Dropbox making a change, for example.

I hope there's a plan in place for preserving SFS. I'm guilty of it too, but it's such a bad idea that people have stopped providing alternate links to their downloads.

I always wondered why people did that lol. It seemed a waste.

Why people provided alternate links? Because the Simming world has gotten burned by hosts before. Years ago, SFS was down for a long time, and a host called sims-cloud popped up. I uploaded some things there, and then those file links expired. IDK if I have them anymore, so those items are could be gone for good. Wouldn't have happened if I'd uploaded to a couple different places.
