Default Nightlife patch won't install
*I downloaded the nl patch off the maxis website.
*It won't let me install it.
*It keeps on saying that thing about "error during update installation. Please..."
*I've un-installed and re-installed all sims games (original, uni, and nl)
*It still says it
*I've backed up all my files to cd so there are no mods/hacks on my hard disk
*The text above the download bar says "objects.package" and I don't understand what that means about what the problem could be

*Please reply quickly! I've been trying to solve this problem for a week and I'm crying my eyes out. If this doesn't work, I swear I'll go crazy.

Please don't post your entire post in caps, I know you're frustrated but it's not good to read.

1. Do you have a perfectly legal copy of the game?
2. Are you using original (not copied) discs?
3. Are you using the original EXE's (no cd cracks etc).

If any of those are "no", use them.
If all of those are "yes", read below.

I think rather than messing around with possibilities, it'll be wise just to scrape the entire game off (which is different from uninstalling) and try again.

Firstly, I'm assuming that your saved games are backed up, and that you backed them up after you've been playing Nightlife?
If so, follow this page: http://www.sims2techguide.net/article.php?p=21 and take absolutely everything off.

Then:
Install the original
Don't install anything at all, including patches, no cd cracks or anything else.
Install University
Don't install anything at all.
Install Nightlife
Install the Nightlife patch.
Put your saved games back.
