'Grey Gardens'
Designed by Joseph Greenleaf Thorpe in 1897. Later bought by the famous horticulturalist and garden writer Anna Gilman Hill and her husband in 1913. Mrs Hill imported concrete walls from Spain and Ivy from England to help create one of the greatest gardens of its time in America. The gardens flourished even after the house and gardens were sold on to Phelan and Edith Beale in the 1920s. That was until they got divorced leaving Edith and her daughter Edie living in the house on an inheritance that didn't last. The gardens decayed with the family fortune and the ivy took hold all over the house causing a lot of destruction and helping create the squalid conditions that made them famous in the 1970s when their home was condemned by the local council and their famous relatives Jackie Kennedy/Onassis and her sister Lee had to come to their rescue. The house was eventually sold on in 1979 after the death of Big Edie on the condition that the house would be saved and restored.

Instead of going for when the house was derelict or when it was renovated, I've gone for it in its 1920s/1930s hey-day. It's a house I've attempted many times before already and had all but given up on creating until I saw Ouerbacker's attempt at creating the house, it helped me overcome the main issue I was having with my attempts and let me get closer to an authentic recreation than I ever have before. However, that being said, it's not an entirely authentic recreation, for one thing, coming up with a workable floorplan was difficult. The best one I found was found here. But even so, I've still amended the floorplan further. With the interior I'm really drawing inspiration from the film set of the HBO film and a bunch of old photos I found online.
