Hi everyone ,

This large portrait of Louis XV was woven at the Manufacture Royale des Gobelins from 1769 to 1771 in the studio of Pierre-Francois Cozette after the portrait painted by Louis-Michel Van Loo in 1761. It was presented to the King in 1773. Louis XV is clothed in the mantle of the coronation. Contemporaries admired the "truth" of the work and the "magnificence" of execution. The very fine weaving allowed an exceptional textile translation of the painted portrait of the King with all the rendering of the shades. The work has retained its powerful carved wooden edge and especially the glass whose dimensions are of technical prowess. This masterpiece of the Gobelins is kept in the room of the Queen's Nobles where it was placed in 1773.
