Default How can we save one custom career using Career Creator 3?
Hello everyone, I need some help again 😅

I created a custom career using Career Creator 3 and saved the changes. I was able to export the career file, which the program saved as a .car file.
However, I'm unsure how to install it. I assume all careers might be saved together.

Is there a way to save a single career as an .iff file?

If there's a way to get the game to recognize a .car file, I've been unable to find it. The only thing I've found that works is to give people the entire modded Work.iff file, which goes in the The Sims\ExpansionShared folder. If you've created new chance cards for the career, you'll also need to give them the modded CarPortal.iff, which goes in the The Sims\GameData\Objects folder. And if you've made a new job icon, you'll need to give them the modded cpanel folder, which goes in the The Sims\UIGraphics folder.

I made a Starfleet career (from Star Trek) for The Sims 1; you can see how I set that up at http://corylea.com/StarfleetCareerForTheSims1.html.

I've made some mods for The Sims 1 -- yes, The Sims ONE :-) -- which you can find at http://corylea.com/Sims1ModsByCorylea.html

Thank you so much for your help!
I checked all the folders, and the files are there. However, I've noticed an issue with the program.
I tried updating the offer dialog text, and while it seems to save in the program, the changes don't appear in the .iff file in the folder, and there is no update to the file or its date.
If I move the Work.iff file out of the folder and save the career again in the program, no new Work.iff file is created.

Is there a way to fix this?

Regarding the issue I mentioned in my previous comment, it seems this is likely a bug, and reinstalling the program resolves it.
The downside is that any changes require a new installation of the program for the file to update.
Until we identify the cause of the problem, it's best to double-check everything before saving.

Windows 10 and 11 assume that their users are stupid, and they shouldn't be allowed to do anything to the files or folders that are in Program Files (x86). So people who try to make new outfits with The Sims Creator or who try to make new careers with Career Creator often find that their work won't save.

The usual way of handling this is to make sure you're running Career Creator (or The Sims Creator) as an administrator, since administrators have the privilege of writing to Program Files. To do this, go to Career Creator 3.exe, RIGHT-click on it, and choose "Properties" from the list. You'll get a pop-up box with several tabs along the top. Click on the "Compatibility" tab and put a checkmark in the box next to "Run this program as an administrator."

While you're there, set the Compatibility mode to "Windows XP (Service Pack 2.)" (Occasionally people have luck with Service Pack THREE if Service Pack TWO doesn't work for them, but try two first.)

Once you've put the checkmark in the "Run this program as an administrator" box and set the Compatibility mode to "Windows XP (Service Pack 2," try running the program again, and see if it will save now.

Personally, I find it insulting that I'm assumed to be too stupid to be allowed to alter the files on my own @#$%& computer, so I make a different change. The ability to write to the disc is called a permission, so I alter the permissions. To change the permissions, RIGHT-click on the Maxis folder (or on the The Sims folder if your game is installed without a Maxis folder) and choose Properties. You'll get a small pop-up with several tabs. Click on the Security tab. There will be a list of group or user names. Scroll down that list until you find the entry that says Users (the name of your computer) and click on that. Right underneath that list, it says, "to change permissions, click Edit," so click Edit. That will get you ANOTHER pop-up. Click on Users again, and click the check box that says Full Control. Then click Apply, then click OK. That should give you the right to actually save files on your own #@%$ computer! At least for the Maxis folder and its subfolders. :-)

Well, I think it's probably a permissions problem with Windows, rather than a problem with Career Creator 3. Try the fix I've give above, make sure to click File - Save when you're in Career Creator, and see if that fixes it. I used Career Creator 3 a LOT when making my Starfleet career, and I didn't have to reinstall it every time I made a change.

That makes sense, and you are absolutely right, it works now =)
I tend to forget that specifically with The Sims I always need to run a program as an administrator.
You are the best, thank you for everything!

Does the program give you an opton to install to a different location? Best way to deal with Windows file virtualisation and UAC is to install sims games to a different location. I have all my Sims 1 and Sims 2 games and utilities installed to C:\ Games, which is not protected by UAC or file virtualisation, so you never have to mess with permissions or admin access or virtualstore. (Any program that doesn't need these protections can be installed to a custom location, although I would recommend to install your browsers, antivirus, and anything with OS UI integration to the default locations).

I will choose a path that's clear- I will choose free will

That's what I do with modern games, but when I installed The Sims 1 Complete Collection, I wasn't given a choice of where to install...

That's odd, I have Sims 1 complete collection too, and I installed that to a custom location.
