I worked on a similar mod for months and cold not track down some of the instances that I wanted to replace, so good for you for handling this. Now I fel less bad for not managing it myself.

@Echoweaver: in this case it's okay to not have any ethnic references, because the occupation isn't the people and part of the content of the slur is to imply that the people are only this occupation & that only those people have this occupation. As our other friend points out, in the UK they apply the slur to not-at-all Romani migrant families.

This game has a lot of nice inclusive features, and a bunch of casually racist bits that the game writers apparently didn't understand (World Adventures I am so disappointed in you). It's nice when we can figure out how to change those into something better.

I've done similar modernisation of terms like these for my British English Sims 3 translation (except for in Store worlds due to logistical issues), so I can give a tip to also possibly try to change the strings for the base game wall decor that is called "Heinrich Stübbman and the..." well... that.

I went with "fortune teller" in my case, since the general stereotype that connects Romani to fortune telling (A stereotype perpetuated extremely much by 1990's real-life newspapers' classifieds sections to the point of making it into Sims 1 and 2) is in and of itself pretty problematic, such that I personally feel that changing such cases to "Romani" doesn't solve it 100%.

Ah, right. I've been working on-and-off on that wiki since July 2023, though I had greatly reduced my activity there since February 2024. I've now added a section on that wall decor to that wiki page in question. Thanks for the tip.

you are a saint, i have wanted a mod that does this for so long! my makeshift solution was to use master controller to rename stuff but there's a limit to how far that gets you + i had to do it for every new save. i know ea ended support for ts3 ages ago but it is still wild this was not caught before they did so. major yikes. will definitely be using this mod next time i play ts3!

noooo oh my god thank you.... if i played a game where i had any intent of using the fortune telling mechanic id just buy the whole wagon and rename it to fortune teller's wagon. like it doesnt bother me enough to call ea a bunch of racists, its an old game and a lot of ppl are genuinely ignorant on the words meaning... but it still sure does bother me. sorry that people are being jerks because you have basic social conscience -- some of these comments legit dumbfound me in how much of a freak you have to be to type them out, proofread them, and still click post -- but im sure you unfortunately expected it. thank you for this!!

Ever since I learned this word was a racist slur a few years back I was disappointed by the usage of the word in this game and i used a few mods to rename objects in individual worlds but i don’t have coding skills - thank you for making this an official mod 🫶🏾🫶🏾.

I was literally just placing the wagon in IP yesterday and thinking to myself, Wow this is an aspect of TS3 that has *not* aged well!

I've been waiting for a mod like this, it's weirdly uncomfortable playing and then getting slapped in the face reminded this game is from 2009.

Thank you!!! I've always wanted to use the caravan and join the career, but it genuinely made me so uncomfortable to even get a wish to visit it. I love the re-classification to reference Cassandra; Greek myths are literally some of my favorite subjects so this sparks joy for me.

I didn't expect such a mod to exist but I was pleasantly surprised.

Also since some of you don't get it, just because some people geniunely identify as the other word, there are many others who find it offensive and want to be reffered to as Roma/Romani. If you want to show that you give a fuck use Roma or Romani unless someone specifically tells you that they prefer to be refferred to as the other word.

It is horrifying but unsurprising how many mod-deleted comments there are. I never realized just how casual and pervasive Roma racism was until I began researching their culture after falling in love with Dungeons & Dragon's Vistani. Now I cringe every time I play in two of my favorite worlds, especially since the Hidden Springs lot is a favorite of mine. Thank you for this. It's shameful that racism against Roma is still treated as socially acceptable. I do have one question, though. Why change the name of Heinrich Stübbman? I tried googling the name, but nothing popped up. Is there a cultural insult to this name I'm unaware of?

Hi! It's been a few months so my recollection may not be entirely accurate, but I believe there wasn't any one exact reason I changed the name. I believe, in part, it was so my mod would be less similar to the British English localization mod. Furthermore, I thought it'd be fun to include a reference to Bill Haley & His Comets, so I needed to change Heinrich Stübbman's name to match the punny theme.

it was generally people saying nasty things and getting into flame wars because they didn't like this mod. unfortunately a handful of good/useful comments (e.g. old versions of the mod, resources to learn about the history and impacts of anti-Romani racism) were lost in the purge, but otherwise it is much nicer now without people arguing over a string replacement mod for a 15+ year old game :P
