Kingdom of Heaven (USA, 2005)

The Silence (2010, Germany, subtitled): 13-year-old Sinikka vanishes on a hot summer night. Her bicycle is found in the exact place where a girl was killed 23 years ago. The dramatic present forces those involved in the original case to face their past.
My Comment: Keeping track of who's who in this film can be a bit confusing, since at least two characters are depicted with a 23-year difference in the timeline, from the way they looked during the time of the first murder to the way they looked at the time of the second and the fact that they look similar to other characters. At one point, I had to click back to the early part of the film for a moment to get it straight.
There also seems to be an intermingling of personal relationships between cops, victims' relatives, and bad guys, unless I'm mistaken, which further confuses things. It doesn't seem like an overly complicated story, it just seems to have too many characters that aren't well defined, I think.
Everone seems to have secondary issues going on as well. For example, a young female police detective is pregnant, which plays no role whatsoever in the plot - so why have this? Did they not want to wait filming until after the actress had her baby?
This lack of focus seems like something typical of German films. They go overboard in showing the "human" side of characters, and in so doing lose the focus of the plot.
Finally, the subtitles precede the speaking by several seconds, which is irritating.
It's an interesting drama, but the above faults reduce it from Good to Mediocre.
