Default Cant make this recolorable
I have already used this guide https://hugelunatic.com/making-objects-recolorable/ for recoloring. I want to make armchair or single living chair into dining chair, so I cloned the custom chair and replace the mesh and texture but it seemed didn't change the chair into the mesh I want and is not recolorable. Would you guys help me to see what was going on with this mesh?

Hello @Alderlock
If you are converting a Sims3/4 to a Sims2 object, you need to clone a Sims2 chair.

I downloaded your chair to have a look at it.
In the GeometricDataContainer (GMDC), there is no colors showing. Was that the case before you imported in your new chair?
Sometimes I have found this, and it is to do with what options you choose when selecting the cloned item i.e. did you tick "Standalone" - this option is not the default. I would recommend starting again with the standalone option, rename your object and go into the GMDC to check if you now have color for the object before reimporting the new chair.

To me, it doesn't look as if you have updated the name of the chair as it is still showing 4to2 Juliette Chair and possibly not given a new GUID.

Also, in the GMDC, I found the subsets names of wood and cloth had not been used and the other groups e.g. glass not deleted as no longer required.
In Material Definition, change the StdBaseTextureName to correspond with (the target) used in Material Textures, for the colors to update. I would recommend a simple target name e..g. chair and consequently update the Material Textures to end with "-chair_txtr". If you do recolors, name it chair2, chair3 etc.

I updated the chair myself but will not recolor; so the main change is to make it Standalone.

Hope this helps?
Good luck!

Update 11.09: I made your chair:

I have attached the zip.file for you to have a look at and compare with your own. I believe it was the standalone option not being used that ultimately led to the object not being recolorable.

Yes I have been battling the new GUID, it says it have to register to get one but I followed this guide https://gardenofshadows.org.uk/gard...ic=36101.0;wap2 to get the new GUID but it seemed I missed something to make it not work the way I want it. I have checked the chair mesh that you fixed, I am very grateful, thankful and love it however I really want the full mesh with the glass on the side of the chair just like the original one in this one https://cluedosims.tumblr.com/post/...-recycled-guids.

questions: did you remesh it or do I just have to add the glass part on the mesh? I am sorry I am a novice in meshing and SimPE or we only can make 2 subsets on dining chairs?

Hello @Alderlock
I am fairly new to converting objects starting in 2020 when GUIDs were no longer available.
To acquire a GUID, after
Selecting the object you wish to clone (avoid objects that have been slaved to another e.g. quaint loveseat and sofa as you will need to change the SimPE settings to making the object standalone) ,
Update the description (all the info on the money will be worked out for you),
Name your file - use an abbreviation of your username i.e. Alk plus followed by the proper name of your object e.g. alkmobilediningchair
In Object Data, go into Raw Data and change to decimal then update comfort and/or environment scores as you wish
On the left side, click on update all MMATS on the left side, rename the filename i.e.alkmobilediningchair

Above update all MMATS is the word GUID with a value that is the same value as the fallback GUID a few rows below and this is why it needs to be changed,
Click on the heading Tools select from the drop down list Object Tools then Hash Generator
There is a GUID that is generated that is unique to the name you have chosen for your object - use control and C to copy the number generated usually "00x00....." and paste it (control and v) to replace that number. Then click on Update , then Commit then Tools , then from the drop down list Fix Integrity

Re your other questions:
Sims 2 objects can only have 2 subsets that can be mixed when selected; however if there is a third part, that can be included but will be constant for all the color options of the other two subsets e.g will always be the one type of glass you have chosen - clear glass. It is your decision which 2 subsets you want to have the choice with - the wood and fabric of this chair could be one subset (regroup to one in Milkshape 3D) and the glass could be the other if you would like various colors of glass e.g blue, green, grey, black, white.

Glass is slightly complicated - as you work on doing conversions that have a glass element, take a screen dump of the Material Definitions (TXMT) for use when adding glass or a specific color of glass. Alternatively I could gather some of mine and attach it here if you like. I think you will come a long way before you will find a glass texture image, so I could add that for you too. I recently made a chair and did a glass recolor request Studio Town Faux Dining Set - you could have a look at that to see how to add glass.

I have also uploaded a tutorial on converting objects Convertings Sims3 Objects to Sims2 that might also help you.

Hope this helps?
Good luck!

This helps me, a lot thank you xD

I still have some problems though, I tried to add glass edge and glass but it didn't appear like I want to but still function as dining chair or desk chair like so

[IMG][/IMG]

I wish to make it similar to living chair on the right side, and it's floating in the air, how do I fix the floating?

Hello @Alderlock
To stop the floating in air, go into Milkshape 3D and import the object you are cloning from first, then import your new chair. Click on each groups of your new chair (i.e. wood) and select then do the same with your group cloth. With all groups of your object now selected, move to the same position as your cloned chair - checking the side, front and top down are all aligning too.

Also you may need to consider scaling the object to be an exact fit (or closer fit) to the cloned object. I did this when making your chair - scaling: x=0.9, y=1.1, z=0.9 to fit the East Side Oaktown Dining Chair that I chose. At the time, due to its name, I thought it was a dining chair.
A lot of Sims4 objects have to be scaled whereas if converting Sims3 objects, it is very rare that you need to do this as they are approximately the same size as Sims2 objects.
It is a bit of a trial and error to work out the scaling needed. Just undo the scaling until you are happy with the new size you have made.

Once you are happy with the position and the size of your new chair, delete the group(s) of your cloned object and export your new chair.

Re the glass and glass edge, for it to appear you will have to have an entry in Texture Image (TXTR), Material Definition (TXMT) and Material Override (MMAT) as well as Shape (SHPE).
If you take a screen dump of these screens, or upload your latest version of your chair, I could have another look at it.

Update 12.21
I was thinking about the glass for this chair and remembered when I extracted the mesh there was only 2 groups - cloth and wood. I had a go at trying to separate the object further for the glass rims and am unable to do that - the only other part that could be separated is the back of the upper cloth.
So my suggestion is not to use glass, but make your materials reflective.

Wow thank you so much for patiently teaching me, I appreciate all of your effort . I kinda agree with you on avoiding glass (to avoid stress on UV mapping), I tried to group chair legs, glass and glass edge and I made another problem which is remapping the UV in the future (which is not my expertise Q____Q) . But I really do want this glass part which is why I want it to make it into dining chair so I can make meeting room like hehe. I tried to do what you instruct me but voila the chair is weird, I export and import it using wavefront OBJ maybe that's the issue? I cant export using sims 2 unimesh or exporter and I already patch it with the plugins in MTS.
[IMG][/IMG]

Thank you for patienly teaching me these stuffs, but I guess you are right it's better to just use the chair without the glass. I don't play with shade or reflection since the supperstition said it cause pink soup a lot @__@, would you like to upload your updated one? I Want to recolor that hehe

Hello @Alderlock
Importing and Exporting from Milkshape 3D is generally done by the wavefront option; the unimesh is for objects with animations (and joints) - best to leave that alone for the time being.

From your image of the chair in SimPE, I will start by importing it into Milkshape 3D:

Click on heading 'Model' and then Rotate.

Click on heading 'Groups' and select all groups for object.

Chair now rotated to upright position.

Imported a dining chair (used Oaktowne East Side Dining Chair).

Click on 'Move' with your selected chair.

The new chair now moved to fit on the imported chair.

After that, delete the groups relating to the Oaktown East Side Dining Chair; so now you only have the 2 groups from your new chair i.e. wood and cloth.
To make a third group i.e. glass, the wood group needs to be separated - start with the legs then the support part of the wood.

Do you have experience of using 'Face' and regrouping items?
If not, I could do a small tutorial for you?

Assuming now you have 3 groups separated - ready to export to SimPE.

Import new chair - note glass has no color as no entries yet on Shape,, Texture Image, Material Definition and Material Override.

In Shape, add entry for glass:

In Texture Image, add entry for glass:

In Material Definition, add entry for glass - I chose black glass but this can be amended. I also updated the cloth and wood to be reflective.

In Material Override, add entry for glass:

After doing Fix Integrity, go to Geometric Data Container and preview your chair:

I have attached zip.files of this new dining chair, a lounge chair and Glass Material Definitions should you prefer another glass color.
Hope this is of help to you; I have tried to keep it simple - hope you can follow and use in the future.

OMG I need this small tutorial, THANKSSSSS ALOOT MY GOSH, YOU ARE MY QUEEN Q___Q. and thanks a lot for the glass material definition I kinda confused and felt challenges with this coding. I will take a look on the mesh and see what I did wrong. I haven't played with anything other than TTAB, BCON and BHAV so far so I am pretty clueless (Let's say I was level zero in meshing).

I am looking for this tutorial on the sims 2 tutorial in both tumblr and MTS. And I still mess it up ahaha. But with this small tutorial of urs gives me more clues. Thanks, thanks, thanks, love you bunch hahahaha

Hello @Alderlock
You are welcome.

Just one last thing, do you own Sims 3 or Sims 4 games?
If you do, you might want to download and install TSR Workshop so you can convert the objects to Sims 2 or Sims 3.
In TSR Workshop, you can export the meshes (no need for UV mapping!) and textures of objects, plus recolor using the materials from these games adjusting color as desired.

Good luck!

Update 17.05,
Discovered I had messed up the Glass Material Definition - did not update all references or failed to save - my humble apologies.

The glass is now showing properly in-game: -

I have also attached the new zip.file for the Dining Chair.

Wow thanks a bunch, you did this is already a big help really. I dont really play the sims 3 or 4. So if I want to convert from those games I usually search it on google first maybe some creators already done it. But to be honest I prefer the custom ones than maxis items. But for preventing UV maping is actually a brilliant idea hahaha

Hello @Alderlock
If you prefer non-maxis:
1. Create a folder, name it and place your object in the folder.
2. Open the object in SimPE (by double-clicking on the object).
3. Select okay to run the program.
4. When it opens, at the bottom of the screen, select 'PlugIn View'.
5. On the Resource Tree, select the Geometric Data Container (GMDC) and click on the object.
6. Select Preview, and then export to the location of your folder.
7. Next click on Texture Images (TXTR), then each image, right clicking and selecting export to your folder location.

You now have all the info you will need to play around with it e.g. if it was a lounge chair, you can make it a dining chair.

Close the object in SimPE and reopen SimPE, this time loading the data, so you can then select and clone a Sims 2 object which this time would be a dining chair.
From the data list, select 'Seating', then Dining Room and select a chair. If your new chair has 2 parts (wood and fabric), select a chair that has these properties (with experience you will learn how to add another part).
Click 'Next' then 'Start'.
Select your preferences for cloning - tick the change description and possibly make it standalone (so no issue with colors).
The description box will open first - give it a name and a price and describe the object, then click 'Finish'.
When the Scenegraph opens, give your new object a unique name, and save the new SimPE Mesh with the same name plus the word 'mesh' to your folder location.

From here you can make your new object with the help of Milkshape 3D (no UV mapping required).

I see from your profile, that you do recoloring of objects. You can use TSR Workshop to recolor any Sims 3 objects which would give access to loads of materials (which can also be recolored) and is very easy to use. After completing, export them in PNG format to your object folder location.

Hope this helps?
Good luck!

This is extremely helpful, to be honest. Hahaha. I will try it for my next project. There are a bunch of single living chairs that I want to convert into dining chairs (since some of them are better for enjoying meals than chatting, haha). Your guidance helps me to achieve that. I often find it difficult to find the correct code or tutorial to gain certain items (like the glass material you post, lightning issues, and names to achieve certain effects). I can't find the tutorial anywhere but somehow other creators knew it. Yes I mostly do recoloring since my objective is to create a colorful custom lot. But I don't put my lot in MTS, since I guess it's a bit limited for full CC lots. Thank you so much I appreciate your effort and patience with a novice like me :D

Hello @Alderlock
RE tutorials, I have been there and know where you are coming from; loads of tutorials but not quite what you are looking for.

Thankfully there is the Sims2 Creation Workshop and Repair Shop on MTS - and members, especially simmer22, have helped me with all kinds of problems. All I can say is over time whilst making objects, you will pick up bits and pieces that you see from working closely with objects. The key is often selecting the object you decide to clone; pick the wrong one can lead to e.g. not being able to recolor - pick the right one and it can be easy and fun.

Hope you have fun with your conversions - I look forward to seeing you upload them!
