I was curious if anyone has purchased a world from boringbonestv and if they were satisfied? This isnt a call out post. I really like their work and this is one of the first times I would be willing to pay for non-EA sims content. I was curious if anyone has done so and if they have any comments on the purchase. Feel free to message me as well.

Haha yeah they do have a signature look. A family member was willing to take the risk and purchase them for me. They aren't bad if youre like me and just want a small canvas thats already got something going on.
I've already began making edits in CAW.

I wouldn't buy anything from him after all the controversy. He got banned from MTS for a reason.

OH! Too late. But I was not tracking. Thank you! I felt weird about making this thread initially but I guess there was a reason. I always have a funny feeling about people who sell Sims 3 content (˘･_･˘)

@pretenshus - For future reference, never pay for CC that is paywalled/uploaded behind a paywall At least, that's a rule I personally follow. I actually did stumble on his blog/patreon once before and even asked a question here on MTS in the 'Stupid Questions' thread regarding whether selling CC is even allowed by EA, without mentioning his username/patreon's name. (It's fine if the CC is not uploaded behind a paywall with donations or subscriptions being an option on the side.)

This has been debated for ages and opinions vary. Many excellent creators have donator only downloads and it is up to everyone to choose to buy them or not?

My stuff is free, whenever I get around to uploading anything, BUT... my understanding (which might be completely wrong) is that IF it is a 100% created mesh and textures, you can sell, or the easy way is that you are charging for your time, which can be a bit more than most realize, but meshes and textures originating from EA are owned by EA and are free, even when altered.

As said this has been debated to death ages ago. It is up to people to decide what they want to do. If people want to pay/donate for some content it is their choice.

And as stated above it makes a difference if totally a new creation or uses EA content?

Yeah, if you want to pay someone who violates EA policy, that's your decision. But that doesn't change the fact that what that person is doing is illegal.

EA's policy doesn't clarify this in any way - the article only mentions "mods", meaning all mods, without distinction.

What makes you think this creator was banned from MTS?

No, I have never paid for anything by this creator and I never will, for several reasons.

One of them is that I don’t think it’s acceptable to charge money for custom content that

• is made using tools that have been shared freely by the community,
• is based on experience and tutorials that have also been shared freely by the community, and
• is created for a game whose Terms of Use explicitly state that user-made mods must be shared for free.

Is creating CC a lot of work? Absolutely, if it’s done properly. Anyone is free to sell fully original, made-from-scratch models on platforms that are specifically meant for selling assets for use in computer games. Many creators edit EA assets though, or assets made by other creators. Editing those with freely available tools for use in The Sims games and then selling the result? Nah...

Another reason why I would never pay for these worlds is that they are indeed just blank canvases, not designed for actual gameplay. The lots are empty shells and rely heavily on CC from that creator that functions merely as building blocks - objects that look like windows or walls but don’t have the corresponding gameplay attributes. This may result in builds that look nice (if you like that style), but they are not usable in gameplay. I would have to invest a lot of time and effort to make them functional, so why would I pay for something that unfinished? To be fair, I’m referring to earlier work by this creator that was shared for free, so I’m assuming the paywalled worlds are similar, or possibly worse, judging by the screenshots.

There are also some personal reasons. I find it questionable when someone boasts about how quickly they created something and then charges several dollars for it. There is also the already mentioned issue of using other people’s work as a base (to avoid calling it “stealing”) without even crediting it properly. This ties directly into my earlier point: in this community, knowledge and experience are shared by many highly talented and skilled creators. No one creates content in isolation without relying on tutorials or the countless help threads covering every imaginable topic. Profiting from that shared knowledge just to make some quick money is not something I want to support. And lastly, presenting everything, even minor tuning mods as if they were a groundbreaking invention is (at best) amusing. I’m not going to start a discussion about the use of AI here, as that would be an entirely separate topic on its own.
That said, these personal reasons are not directly related to the CC itself and everyone is free to form their own opinion.

If you want to contact the probably dozens of past and current sites to chew them out for having any donation items, go for it. I am sure someone like Sandy at Around the Sims would just love to hear from you and be told everything on her site should be done for the community without a single penny of compensation that is solely the choice of the people who donate. And add all the people on Patreon such as Carl whom I donate to. When Paysites Must Be Destroyed was a thing there were maybe 30-50 sites listed. Also it is a known fact that the "free" items at TSR are in many cases done by top artists whom they pay for the content. So, if you have a problem with all of them, and the millions of simmers who get the content......................

Huh? It's not me who has a problem with this, it's EA. I'm not starting a discussion about whether it's morally right or wrong, I'm just pointing out that it is a violation of copyright and the terms of the User Agreement, and I personally don't want to support this practice for that reason alone.
So it's not that "This has been debated for ages and opinions vary", it's a black-and-white issue: either you're infringing copyright or you're not. EA has made the matter clear, even if you don't agree with it.

And it's not like the creators will be left "without a penny", EA has addressed this issue in its Mods Policy, and creators can offer their mods in early access. You can also voluntarily support the creators you like at any time, e.g., on Ko-fi or a similar service.

I think the reason this is debated so much is that, for years, EA have allowed TSR to charge for downloads, and many years ago they actively encouraged them (TSR was featured on the Sims 2 site in the 'fan sites' section, even though it was a paysite).

Correct, this has been debated/discussed up to the rafters in the past. Also. someone like Carl I think gets early access to things from EA and yet is someone who has some Patreon requirements to access some of his things, and EA probably knows that. There are probably other examples also. I toss him some and do not mind doing it at all.

But back to original topic, IMO I would not want any of those worlds, and even more if had to pay for them.

Once you get past some of the visual effects and personal touches you do have a nice little getaway ('◡‿◡)

WoooooW! I had no idea about all of this. I did forget that he was on MTS, but I didn't notice that he's gone now.

I had his world before; I wasn't feeling it once I loaded the game. It seemed very...plain I guess? Uniformed in a way? idk I didn't pay for the world the time he released it, I think I waited for it to be free and was kind of disappointed (but then again I like my game to be as realistic as possible and I didn't get that feel from his world). I do remember he had a ton of mods that he suggested to go with the world, and I did try it, and it did run smooth (that was my old computer at the time), but it just seemed too much since I already had stuff in my game already. I would def say make sure you have a back up, you never know what it could do.

Very fair! For anyone reading, my experience is that you may want to be familiar with CAW and putting the time in with world/lot editing. I wouldnt suggest this world as is but it was a great start for what I was going for.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but you paid for this?
