Default Sewing things from castoffs
Honestly my true motivation is to put something in this forum that is not some doofus name Ephraim urging people to follow his dubious links to moiney-grabbing endeavors. I figured he posted 5 of these in the space of a couple minutes because this forum hasn't had a new post in a while.

So a thing I do is that I get promising oddments of fabric from the only thrift store around here that's worthy, and they're usually tablecloths, curtains, por bedsheets, and I make them into serviceable clothing for myself. I'm a very round and short person with a few odd proportions in my body, a taste for generous clothing, a distaste for hems touching my ankle bone, and a taste for colors (for a while I would mostly only wear garish plaid, but I've calmed down a bit), In the stores the clothes for my size range are ill-fitting, overpriced, poorly made, and generally ugly, and I am retired and underfunded, so I have a lot of motivation.

But I'm really slow. It takes me a month or so to make a pair of trousers. Though my trousers have huge pockets including a side pocket instead of rear pockets and a "watch pocket" for my car key, the right number of belt loops (eight), a hanging loop on the inside, and bias tape finishing on every seam, so it's worth the wait. If the fabric I find has a really nice hand but the color isn't to my liking I will dye the fabric with fiber reacxtive dyes (I pretty much only wear cotton because rayon falls apart on me and the other synthetics tend to feel like knives poking in my skin if I wear them too long. And yes, if the thrift store fabric feels like cotton but I'm not sure I might try it: if it doesn't feel bad after a bit, it doesn't matter if it wasn't really cotton).

I'm currently between sewing jags so none of my clothes are picture-ready (I am very hard on them and they get stained and bleached).

Any other people sewing out there? Do you sew for elegance or for serviceability or some other thing?
