My intuition never fails on me!

Question: Doesn't the original box art picture an elder Sim in the exact same spot the red-haired male teen Sim is?

EDIT: Oh,scratch that. That rendition apparently mixes up Sims renders from different releases. I'm so used to seeing him alongside the karate-posing girl!

Must've figured out they were losing money to the piracy sites.

There's something weird about the grey-haired dude, and the girl in the front is no longer doing karate.
I think there were a few variations of the box art, though. Same-ish people but slightly different poses, it seems?

Yeah, they went right through the masters and all, you can see they kind of made it from scratch. I'm a bit surprised they were granted the permission to access the games' source code from EA, though! I want their lawyers' numbers!

Um... Not sure what you mean? EA owns the Sims franchise. They can do whatever with it.

I'm confused too. What would be the benefit for them re-releasing it for free after all this time, when people found ways to still play it anyway? And if they expect people to pay for it they better update it so that it at the very least RUNS without major graphical and performance issues on modern systems

Because they can push people to use the EA app, and can show in-game DLC offers as they do in Sims 4. They could get their lawyers to issue take-down notices on sites offering the game for download, if they thought it would be worth while.

Who is George?

The only George I can think of is George Jarvie, a teenager who lives in downtown Veronaville, with his adoptive father Gregg, and his sister (by adoption) Grace.

(I just posted in the Stupid Questions thread, when I couldn't think how to describe the relationship between George and Grace!)

You mean, "what is George?"
The reason my UC version thinks it's no longer connected to EA's apps

(It's a no-CD patch, which also works with the UC. No having to log in every time, the app complaining about missing internet connection - you honestly think I want an online connection for the game???, pesky launchers, ads, or what have you).
The RPC has a version of it, too.

My UC has worked in Windows 11 without any problems at all and even I do not need the graphics rule maker to see my RTX 3070Ti video card.
That was almost a year ago when I came back to Sims 2.

I did download from EA app but am using a no-cd patch to by-pass the app.

I've never used the EA app and had no idea they can advertise from within the game, what the hell

But EA actively enforcing copyright is what I'm mostly worried about when the community nowadays is largely operating in a legal *grey area*

I did move from Origin to EA, and I think I may have used the EA app twice. (The last time was when my pc broke and I had to get a new laptop.

Thank you, George. Oh, I am simply convinced this is George:

Looks like they've given the games new logos. Bit flatter than the originals (more noticeable on TS2's logo).

If they were really serious they'd separate the games into their own collections and allow download and retention of the games for free.

When does EA do anything for free, anyway?

I'd love to have a copy of the Sims 1 collection but I'm afraid they're going to attach all kinds of strings to it and when EA gets tired of it, "poof!" goes your download out of your hands.

Hopefully it will be like the Skyrim "Legendary Edition" and not the "Special Edition". If they expanded the Graphics Rules, they could keep the existing "rules" in place without hurting the performance of old computers. But I think it will most definitely be recompiled and bound to DLLs of new Windows.

If a new EP is made, people will start making mods exclusively for that like with Apartments.

Only when they think they can create publicity or good will by doing so, or entice people to buy more of their products. For example, they made the Sims 4 basegame free, because they can encourage people to buy DLC for it. But otherwise, they are a business and so exist to make money.

I'm laughing at how bad the memes are. EA has no proper relationship with the veterans of the community. The Sims 2 community is so many light years away and now EA has to play catch up for money. It's sad.

Thanks for the good times The Sims and The Sims Community. After 18 years, it is time for me to move on to something more purposeful.

I have a suspicion that EA are not doing this only for money and to "celebrate" the 25th anniversary of the series, but also to prevent these games from being legally classified as abandonware. A very shitty move in my opinion.

Is abandonware a legal term now? Stuff stays in copyright for almost a century, and I don't think there has been a precedent for any computer software to be made public domain yet.

I'm no lawyer, but: Abandonware has some connections to the legal sphere but only vaguely, in the sense they're often a subtype of orphan work (which does have some legal precedents as far as archival purposes are concerned (EDIT: Or it doesn't. They overturned the thing in the case I was reading about) but also doesn't mean you're just free to pirate stuff, necessarily).

Being abandonware in the sense of no longer being supported has no bearing on whether copyrights can be defended or takedown notices can be issued. Sometimes this even happens to places that are (at least on the surface) offering archival services--see, for example, Vimm's Lair making certain games unavailable publicly in response to a takedown request.

I don’t know it’s a extreme cause for concern

If this is true will all mods and custom content have to be updated for the sims 2 and 1?!
High chance especially if the game being updated with new graphics and possibly updates to the source code

I fear massive breaks

There are many modders that have retired and many that have unfortunately have passed away if these mods and custom content have to be updated this will be apocalyptic
And a major project to restore these mods/cc

While a remastered graphics and everything is great I do wonder what else will be in stored with that I’m sure they have updates to bugs that also that were never fixed possibly new content for this remaster as well.

High chance If they are upgrading it may be using newer engine

Archiving purposes is what mainly concerns me. Couldn't care less about what EA owns.

But the thing with abandonware (in the case of Sims 1) is that game is DRM protected and no matter where you get it from you will not be able to break the DRM, because EA made it literally part of the game.

I don't see EA re-releasing it anyway because they know it's such an old game that nobody would want to buy it full stop, but unless they've lost their ever-loving minds, they're keeping the DRM in it.

And that's why I doubt it's going to be a full re-release of any of the games. Mostly CC and special content to entice the Sims 4 players to shell out yet more money for their crap.

Because they know 2's fans already have been making our own CC for years and are actually better at that than EA ever dreamed of.

As for 3, the less said the better. Rest in peace.
