Default Do You Use Pets?
I just recently started using them more ever since I created the Hick family yesterday and their 3 dogs and Clare and Luna Charming from the sims 1, I really like cats and dogs especially, I don't know why so many of your forum attenders don't like them, all you got to do is scold them for doing bad things, it really is not that bad, pets are a good addition to the challenge of the game, just remember to buy the required pet mood fill objects like

FOR CATS:: Litterbox and Scratching post and Toy

FOR DOGS:: Bone

FOR BOTH CATS AND DOGS: Food Bowl and accessible bathtub and bed or dog house

Cats and Dogs both can earn family funds when adults but you can't find an elder pet a job without a mod installed though, puppies and kittens require are like babies you need an adult or teen sim on the lot at all times to avoid the Pet Police as oppose to the Social Worker for sim babies children and toddlers. Pet Police will also come if before your all your cats or dogs starve to death you can also unlock in game content like collars and pet coats for later usage by getting your cats and dogs promoted in their careers.

Or you could just be more realistic and Breed or have pets with no career, adding pets adds player responsibility, and makes it so the game is less financially set for example pet food will often drain the household funds and having lots of cats and dogs with no jobs is going to all some financial hit to your sims just starting out

I like pets also their is birds fish and womrats who also require feeding and special care also you could download pets too, any CC pets link on here would be greatly appreciated

So are you going to continue to ignore that sim want to get a puppy or kitten or adopt or buy a pet still. Or? do you use pets if a sim wants one

(edit) If a pet is using a sim bed and your sims desperately need sleep just shoo them? or if you pet won't eat make sure you buy them an expensive pet bowl and have a sim call them to eat if they won't eat, or shoo to wake up a sleeping pet anytime

It will happen in my BACC in a few more years as wagon trail passing near Dodge becomes more heavily travelled and as more supply shipments arrive more often and there's more chance of them coming even in the winter.

Some sims have pets.
Not all of them, because pet owners need to have the time to look after pets.
As for the bed - I just buy a double bed

A lot of my sims have pets. Usually it's the kids who roll wants for a puppy and/or a kitten so I adopt from the shelter. Adult sims with the Family or the Popularity aspiration may roll wants for adult pets and for this reason I place a pet shop for them to go and get whatever pet they want. I like to use the pet shop more than the shelter because other playable sims might visit the lot at the same time and get a pet on their own, which is always a pleasant surprise when I find out during my rotations. Sims with the Fortune aspiration always crack me up because they always roll wants for their pets to get jobs (mostly the in the Show Biz career, probably because it pays the most, lol!) and for them to get promoted!
From the top of my head, in my current mini-megahood, the Jocque family (Desiderata Valley) have a Dalmatian (I named him Zorro because he has two adorable "patches" above his eyes, like a "masque"!), the Caliente sisters (they still live together) have a dog, Roxie (Dina's) and a cat, Bonkers (Nina's, I think that in most of my hoods Nina gets this kitten from the shelter!) and the Tinkers have a St. Bernard's whom I named... Beethoven because I loved the movies as a child and I think he fits the family a lot! There are more but these are the ones I remember right now.

I kind of like the birds too (easy way for the sims to learn the charisma skill without "draining" their Fun and Social motives by talking to themselves in front of a mirror!) but they glitch a lot (usually near a door because they try to... escape???) and, also, the sims tend to ignore everything and anyone else in the house when they have a... damn bird (stupid sims can let the baby/dog/cat starve only to play with the damn bird, even though it bites them!).

Not often, but it happens. Cats and dogs if I find it fits with the family, but it's not the family members I'll add most frequent.

I've found the caged pets to be a bit of a hassle to keep alive, especially if I've got other things to think about (especially for my story sims - I think they've gone through at least 5 parrots, and I pretty much gave up on the hamsters and fish, so now I only add them if I need them in pictures). I'll occasionally add them for other sims if it's a bit too much with a cat or dog, though.

I don't think I've used the dog pen other than trying it out way back when I tested out the AL functions (I'm more likely to let my sims have an actual puppy/dog that can roam free).

After I discovered Kitten ITW's pet mods, I've made a few more pets than previous, mostly because it's a bit more fun to have puppies/kittens when they can have markings that make them look like their parents (single-colored ones are kinda boring).

I use pets all the time, with some caveats:

First off, a sim has to not only want a pet, but they have to tell me what kind they want. I ignore "Obtain a Pet" unless it's connected to "Get a Kitten" or "Get a Puppy," and usually I like to have at least two sims have some combination of those wants at the same time before I go through with it, because getting a pet is rarely something a single sim could do without consulting the other members of the household first. Plus, it stops a bunch of pets from getting made just because there happens to be a child sim in the household, because I swear they want a new pet every other day. If it's something smaller like a womrat or a birdcage I'll oblige more often, but I have yet to have had a bird live for more than a day. I also rarely bother with the toy dog pen because it's massive, kind of ugly, and the last time I did use it, it glitched horribly. I also usually forget that aquariums are a thing, since I've never had sims want it. I also just wish there was a goldfish bowl style aquarium that existed in Sims 3 instead of the huge 2 tile one-- it would make things a bit more attainable for my poorer sims.

Second, I use Christian's Baby Pet Creator. If I had to go through the normal channels of getting kittens and puppies I would literally never be able to play pets. It would just be too cumbersome and labor intensive to justify it, especially since you basically have to treat pets like a Maxis sim couple when you can't control them, hope that they get along, and also have them spend enough time together to even get a relationship. I always randomize which pets breed when the menu comes up, and it usually results in some pretty interesting looking dogs and cats. I don't have a pet store in my neighborhood yet, but it's on my list. If a household buys a pet while I was gone, I'll let them have it. I love that feature of the game, and especially that it's optional-- it's just another level of depth in my opinion to the character of sims.

I teach pets skills only if the owner wants it (usually Family sims will want to teach their pets every skill at once-- gives them something to do when their kids are off at college or moved out), and will always praise or scold certain behaviors. No amount of sloppiness on a sims part will every justify letting a dog pee inside the house, or let them destroy furniture. I do wish that pets didn't have to take up an entire space on a bed (similar to the "child sims can sleep in bed with pets" mod, but for double beds), since I've had several instances where a pet takes up one side of a double bed so the other half of the couple has to sleep on the couch. One thing I do wish is sims would roll the want to teach their cats to use the toilet-- I never see it as a want, but I've always wanted to try and have a cat do that.

I also have a few mods that make pets easier to maintain. I play with smaller houses and 3x2 bathrooms, so I used to avoid or cheat with dogs' hygiene motives because they'd get stinky every day or so just being dogs. The amount of route failure I had to endure just to get a sim and a dog in the same room was absolutely ridiculous, especially if it's just because the faucet is facing the wrong way. I use the Sun&Moon bathable fountains and pools so dogs can just take care of themselves now, and I don't think I could ever go back. I also recently got the buyable pet food mod where sims need to buy a box and have it around to refill pet food, and I'm liking the realism so far.

Beyond that, I just let pets be. They're usually not central to any storylines, and are just little extra things to make a family feel more like a family. Sometimes if a child is an overachiever, it's their birthday, or if they need some aspirational boost (if a parent or family member died), I'll play it as if their parent got them a pet to cheer them up, and that's usually a very wholesome way to integrate them into the storyline. Other times I'll have custody battles over pets with divorces, if one sim loves a pet more than the other.

Also, I hate birds. They seem to die very easily, constantly wake everyone up, and if you let them out of their cage to fly they're basically a stone wall against anyone trying to get around them. I've never had a bird last more than two days before dying, no matter how often I feed them.

I like pets and play with them quite a bit. I doubt there is anything I have not done.
I have:
Adopted pets from the adoption pool
Adopted in strays (free)
I have run a pet store
I have bought pets at an unowned store (Sims can also purchase a pet without you knowing and when you load their lot you will get a pop-up saying 'Do you wish to keep the pet" and the pet (dog or cat) will be on the lot.
I have breed pets and sold them directly. Kitten in the window baby pet markings makes this far more worth while.
I have a vet set up to sell pet items with working pet story items and a table with an invisible bed that a pet can be moved onto (just wish we had a mod to check the pet)
I often control the pets
i have run a pet shelter where they adopt in strays, breed and sell pets.
You can get a mod that allows kids and pets to sleep on the same bed.
I allow pet jobs in my Ubber hood only. Since these are pre made hoods I allow more maxis stuff to be a thing.

The two things I haven't yet done with pets that I have thought about is a pet walking service and a pet hotel service.
I have also never uploaded a pet. I am no good at making they would need to be a born in one that I thought was worth uploading. I have thought about it.
Unfortunately there are not that many animal mods to allow me to really do what I would like with the pets in game. Like proper pet shows and having the vet actually check over the pets.

With small caged pets I have my pet store sell them. There is a good variety here on mts like lizards, all based on the wormrat. There are mods to help keep birds from dying so easily.

Most of my families will end up with at least 1 pet.

Oh nearly forgot-pet clothes. There are not many around I wish there was more I would love a little tux and a skirt -and no I am not joking

Oh two more things I have not done and don't plan on doing, the LTS's related to pets, far too tedious. One is jobs the other is 20 pet friends. What kind of life goal is that?

PS. The pet sleeping on the bed is so much cuter with a child in the same bed.

Most of my families do not have pets. They hate wolves and build a fence around the home and place skippy the stone and an idol from the island to prevent dogs from digging. But a few people who live alone have had a wolf or a grey cat like Kobe. These animals look natural and the cat reminds me of a cat I once had. I have never had a dire wolf lotp. He looks dangerous. There was a bug where the smelling state of a dog wasn't cleared when he got washed. I fixed it. In my neighborhood pets come and visit the University.

I don't really like Sim pets much, but some of my Sims do have them. I love real animals, and neighborhoods feel incomplete without at least some pets.

I always hope my sims will want a pet, or sometimes I just have to be the overlord and give them one anyways. In real life, I've only not had at least 1 cat for 2 days out of my nearly 26 years of life. My parents had cats when I was born and so except for, as I said, 2 days after our old cat died and we got the two we have now, I'm not sure what life sans cat is like. I've not been able to move out yet (mental health reasons) but when I finally do I already know I'm going to need to have a cat of my own.

That said, it feels weird for my sims to not have a pet, but since I prefer playing wants-based that means some won't. But I get really happy and excited whenever they do want a pet.

I play somewhat want-based, so my sims will occasionally adopt pets when children are rolling the wants for them repetitively. I basically never do it the first time a want pops up, unless, say, I have four kids rolling the wants to adopt a puppy or kitten at once, but occasionally I'll have kids who just get stuck on the idea of pets and keep re-rolling the want, and that's when I just suck it up and adopt them a puppy or kitten so they move on. But I don't have a lot of fondness for playing with pets on the lot-- honestly I kind of ignore them and then feel bad about it, a lot of the time-- so I do avoid it for the most part.

Very, very rarely. I don't like that you can't control them, which, due to bugs that were never fixed can even lead to pets starving in front of their full bowls until animal control shows up.
In general I don't like to have Sims I can control as part of the household, no matter if they are pets or room-mates (a feature I refuse to use at all)

Yeah their animations are adorable, but that doesn't make up for the inconvenience of not being able to control them directly, in my opinion. I also never understood the rationale of why Maxis didn't let us control them in the first place. This whole game works through controlling characters.

As for strays...I have modded them out completely, because there were far too many of them, in my opinion.

Yeah, I remember that being mentioned by the Maxoids in the run-up to Apartment Life. Sadly, it was on the now-defunct main site for the game, and I'm too lazy to go digging it up in the Wayback Machine.

I've never seen a problem leaving baby pets alone; is that really a thing?\
In every hood there is a person who has LTW involving pets, and I let them breed one type of pet. As babies or adults (sometimes pregnant --haha surprise!) the are made strays, or given/sold to other Sims, or given to animal control (whatever it's called). Sims I don't like get to raise big dogs in their little lot, and with a mod their female dogs get pregnant by wolves (always bad tempered) and become strays. I love to have pets in homes with toddlers, so cute.

Stand up, speak out. Just not to me..

I've never used pets that much, but have a little. I plan to start using them more and figure out who'd want one by either a want to get one, their interest in animals, or if it fits for some reason. I made my own adoptable pets to put into the pool for variety. I'd like fish more if I didn't worry about forgetting to feed them. Birds annoy me. Womrats .. not sure I ever played with them.
Pet careers ... i'll put a pet in a career if I think the family would do that. I've had pets in careers before.
