Default Need help installing sims 2 on linux
I'm seriously gonna rip my hair out. Can anyone please guide me or tell me where you think I'm going wrong?

I'm trying to install the sims 2 on linux mint cinnamon and I'm using Lutris coz I don't know any other way. I'm using tea's video, but I can't follow it exactly because Lutris no longer has their own web installer because of EA I guess. But I have a .rar of the magipack repack and I'm trying to use it but I don't know how. I tried following the guide on the Lutris site, but when the game was done downloading, there was no app. I downloaded it on my USB because there's not enough space on my drive. I went through the folder, went to SP9 and found the game but when I tried opening it, it didn't work. I tried opening it with Lutris too and it still didn't work.

I can't find an updated tutorial and I don't know if it's even currently possible with the takedown of the web installer. Maybe it's coz it's on a USB? I did that because I am not mentally capable to try and figure out how to give my Linux drive more storage. Omg I spent the whole day dealing with Linux for the sims 2 and now I can't even download the sims 2

I'm sorry I can't be much help. I had my Linux expert friend help me get it working and it wasn't easy - he had to come over again the next day for another try. I'm glad you've got the MagiPack version because that's what we eventually needed to get it working for me when the game versions I already had didn't work.

- Once you'd downloaded the archive, did you unzip it?
- Did you download the installer script under the "Install" button at the top of the Lutris MagiPack version page? (I can see that my expert buddy needed a .json script instead of .yml for unknown tech reasons.)
- You need to point Lutris to the "The_Sims_2_Repack_v5_Setup.exe" first to install the game, then once it's installed you point it to Fun with Pets/SP9/TSBin (under Configure/Game options).
- I don't know if it's possible to run the game off USB - having enough drive space would certainly make things simpler.

Yeah that's one of the things that confused me because the guide on the site says you need a .yml script and the one I installed was a .json. So your expert buddy just used the json? I renamed it. Don't remember what that did or if it was a good idea lol. But yeah I think it came down to the fact that it's on a USB. I tried the USB on my windows and it wouldn't work there either because it needs to be downloaded on the actual system.

I don't know how to acquire more storage, though. I'm hearing stuff about Gparted and a live USB or something and I can't watch a tutorial without getting a headache. I wanna see if I can basically start from over and reinstall Linux but allocate more storage or something.

by the way, are you using a wow64-enabled runner? the sims 2 needs one

Sorry, I don't know what that is. I ended up just deleting linux from my computer and redownloading it and allocating more space this time. So I could actually follow the tutorial. Only issue I'm having now is I can't use LazyDuchess' .asi mods because when I have anything added to the SP9-TSbin-mods folder, the game doesn't open.

But other than that it's working well. Problem really was that I was trying to install it on a USB. Now I know I can't lol

are you using Legacy Collection? it's not compatible with ASI mods made for regular edition
what I meant by my previous post is that, if the game doesn't open, sometimes it can be because of a runner (the piece of software that translates Windows instructions) that doesn't have 32bit support enabled, but seems like your game does open now so nevermind

if you're on Legacy Collection you would like to know about, LazyDuchess's TS2 Extender
it does not replace all their previous ASI mods, but it's surely a must have

no I don't use legacy edition. I use the magipack repack that installs sims 2 RPC automatically. And when I put anything in the TSBIN-Mods folder, the game stops working. Weird.

tell me... does the game stops working right after RPC or after installing an ASI mod only
according to LazyDuchess, some things to try are ensuring vc_redist is installed and trying Medium Lot Imposter settings with the settings EXE

Make sure the launcher is in TSBin, and not in its own folder.
You can try repairing the launcher with Sims2RPCUpdater.exe.

what ASI mod are you trying to install by the way?

I'm trying to use the makeup CAS lag fix and the tombstone mod. But also, my reshade presets go into that folder, I haven't tried installing reshade on Linux so I don't know how that works.

I downloaded the repack which comes with RPC automatically. So RPC is downloaded at the same time and used immediately. I can use it like that, and I can change the settings in the RPC settings and everything works. I imported my mods into the downloads folder and imported my neighbourhoods. When the game was installed on linux there were three things in the TSBIN-Mods folder and so I copied them, placed in the .asi mods, and pasted the original files in again to make extra sure that I didn't replace those three files. But it still doesn't work. Just having anything in that folder makes my game not open anymore, and when I take everything else out, it starts again.

I'm not sure about what vc_redist is. How do I make sure that's installed?

so... the repack came with RPC, what were those three files in the mods folder? by default there should be only two (RPClib and randomizer)
also, the tombstone mod uses a custom DLL to load, did you install it before launching the game?

vc_redist is Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable (a dependency in other words)
the runner might have its own implementation of some components so I don't think that could be the issue

according to this thread, you should rename ReShade dll to an .ASI file to put in the mods folder, RPC acts as the ASI Loader
but we should solve your issue with ASI files first

The three files were randomizer, RPC.asi and RPC.cfg.
And no, somehow i missed the dll even though it's in the mod's download folder lol.
I have renamed the reshade dll to .asi already

oh I see
seems like the repack included a config file so it's okay

do Randomizer.asi and RPC.asi make your game stop working too?
if so we can try reinstalling RPC (or using the updater exe), it's not that difficult

hi sorry for the super late reply! I tested it again and for some reason it's been working with two .asi mods from lazyd. I'll keep messing around to see if it breaks again. But thanks for helping me along the way!
