Default Help extracting plants & trees from expansions?
I'm sorry if this is the wrong place. i have no idea where this should go. I'm asking for help with objects but also with tsrw and depending on answers it might turn into wcif. I was going to ask at tsr's forum but apparently they no longer exist?
I'm having kind of a weird problem with tsrw. It will load plants/trees from the base game but not from expansions. For example, the small fir tree will load but ip's bismark palm won't. I get the message "Could not clone OBJD Part. Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
i've got the folders for the expansions set in the preferences so i'm not sure what's wrong. i'm kind of hoping you guys know how to get these objects to load so i can extract them or at least somewhere else i can find the already extracted files.

I asked a similar question about a month ago and received no reply either. I assume we have broached a taboo topic.

The trees and bushes animate in the breeze, and consist of models made by software called Speedtree. I'm not sure how you'd go about exporting those. This may be why people aren't responding- maybe there isn't a tutorial? Perhaps anyone who has tried cloning trees and plants could give some insight here.

Where TSRW fails, simply use better software
Though if you insist, unticking 'Preserve Group ID' can sometimes resolve EP object errors.

Sims 3 Object Cloner (S3OC) can clone just about everything, with separate sections for special-case objects that TSRW often does not take into account.
All plants should be cloneable, but as noted above there is little you can do with the majority of them as they are packed into a proprietary format.
Here's a guide if you're just looking to make a recolour / retexture: https://acquiresimoleons.blogspot.c...e-recolors.html

My case is a bit simpler ...I believe. When I first started playing Sims3 (about a century ago) I bought most of the EP and SP whenever they were on sale, then discovered most added no gameplay which interested me; so all I've ever played was Ambitions, Seasons, and Generations. But all have items of interest - hair, clothing, furniture, architectural pieces, etc. - which I'd like to have in my game, so I'd like to extract these and create packages of them. I've compiled numerous third party downloads into categorized packages with no problem, but from what I've read it may not be as straightforward with EP and SP data.

Generic items should be fine.
Tick 'Deep Clone' and untick 'Renumber' to more or less extract an object or CAS item into its own package. The benefit of not renumbering is that any saved sims and lots that used the original items should continue to work.

Trees may need some extra steps, because their textures aren't included even when Deep Clone'd. The same link would come in useful for finding and exporting the textures.
Items with visual FX, sound FX, or similar unique properties will lose those.
Items with new scripts will not be functional.
Pretty much everything from CAS will be fine.

I know they come in a weird file type, but the file type isn't a problem. i've got a converter to turn them into static fbx format so i can import them into blender. I just need to be able to export the spt but to do that it's gotta actually load in tsrw.
i'm not seeing a "preserve group id" option when trying to load plants?

In that case, looks like TSRW just doesn't know how to handle expansion plants.

The alternative remains - clone the plant with S3OC instead and open the resulting package in S3PE, then you can directly export the _SPT resource.
