Default Read posts still showing up as unread
For about a week I've been having this problem.

When I open Mod The Sims there are several old posts still showing as unread. I look at them, they become read, then the next time I come to the site they're unread again. Even using the 'mark all posts in this forum as read' doesn't work. They're still back as unread the next time I visit.

I posted in Stupid/Random Questions and at least 5 other people were having the same problem. We all keep our cookies for MTS.

I haven't changed any settings on my computer recently.

I have the same issue, I thought it was my browser. But maybe not?

Hello @Charity
I had a similar problem a couple of months ago.
Whilst I appreciate you have read the posts, have you ticked the box "mark as read"?
This worked for me and was suggested by simsample.

Yes, I went under forum tools and selected 'mark this forum as read'.

Hello @Charity
When you write forum tools, do you mean you clicked on notifications and then clicked on "Mark All Read"?
This was what worked for me.
Hope this helps?

No, because my notifications aren't showing up as unread (but I did now and it did nothing). It's the forum page itself that shows unread threads.

On the forum page you go to Forum Tools and choose Mark forum as read. Separate from any notifications on your profile or the chat icon.

This is not about how to manually mark something as read.

When I open the site, I use a bookmark to page https://modthesims.info/newposts.php, which filters the threads I see according to my preferences.

Until about one or two weeks ago, only threads that were new since my last visit were shown in bold. Once I had read a thread, it was no longer bold, unless there was a new reply.

So, each time I visited the page, only the new active threads were highlighted.

Now, unread threads are always shown in bold, no matter if I read them (i.e. opened them) or marked them as read via Forum Tools. The issue occurs on different computers and with different browsers.

This makes me wonder whether something has changed on MTS, perhaps related to timestamps, or whether a recent browser update is preventing the necessary information from being sent to MTS. However, since the issue occurs across different browsers (even after manually marking a forum as read), I suspect that something on the MTS side may not be working correctly.

I have attached two screenshots for clarification. Screenshot 1 shows Browser 1, where I manually marked the “Site Questions and Issues” forum as read.

I then open MTS using my bookmark in a different browser, and everything is shown in bold again (Screenshot 2).

eta: I am logged in in both browsers.

I agree with @Norn

If I click Community> Recent posts, threads I've read are still showing as unread.

If I go to the forums individually and mark them as read (this takes a looooong time) then the recent posts list shows up as read, so all good.

But if I navigate away from modthesims for a while, when I return the threads are showing as unread again.

I always keep site cookies, and this used to work but something has changed in the past few days.

I thought maybe my cookies were broken so I logged out, deleted all cookies then logged back in. But the problem persisted.

I've been having the same problem for about a week now. Threads continue to show in Bold, even though I've read them.

That's exactly what I did.

Seeing as a lot of people's screenshots are showing subscribed threads, I should clarify that I'm getting this on the front page of the Sims 2 forum. I checked subscribed threads and it does it there too.

In case it's relevant, the earliest thread it happened to was last updated 25th August. Was there a site change around then?

It looks like for me marking a forum as read using Forum Tools they stay read. Even closing the browser and returning they stay marked as read. I'll ask Tashiketh about it.

I'll look into it. Could be due to some session changes I made to stop bots from killing the site.

Okay so I don't have this issue myself. The list of read threads is stored in a cookie. If the total cookie size gets too big it can affect this.

There was a change to the ad provider backend a few weeks back so it's possible that the total cookie size is just too big now.

Give me a bit to rewrite the system to use localstorage instead of cookies.

Okay I swapped out the old cookie method for one using Local Storage and also flipped back on the session saving too, which should fix the incorrect 'Last Visit' and number of people in the last 24 hours bugs.

Note that I have NOT yet added this to the newposts.php code, but I will do that tomorrow.

Not for me.
The opposite is now happening for me. That is, I'm not getting bold type for unread threads, such as this one.
Ya, seriously.

Well, maybe us non-paying customers are being punished, lol, who kows. I only participate in two threads anyway - three counting this one.

Yes, you only get super duper gold cookies if you pay in sexual favours.

But really, after Tashiketh applied the fixes, I logged out, cleared all cache and cookies, then logged back in again. So maybe you need to do that to have it work once more.

This means that for some reason the "last seen" is set to 0 or not saving into local storage at all for you.

To debug this, can you go here: https://modthesims.info/cookie.php and send me a screenshot of what the mtsUnread / all-bold check looks like. You can also try the fix button on that page

Now this is happening to me too. No posts show as unread (forums with unread posts still show as unread).
