Default The concept of Silent Hill not set in Silent Hill...
So, Silent Hill Townfall has just came in and the plot of the game is set in Scotland, in a real life location, on an island (I think, sorry if I am wrong). I think the game is great, but many youtubers argue that Silent Hill not being set in Silent Hill is lazy writing.

I disagree, but I don't disagree because of the lack of lore of Silent Hill; I disagree because the concept of Silent Hill has always changed. I watched an interesting video that explains it and I agree. For example, Silent Hill 4 is not set entirely in Silent Hill. The first game never tells the player that the town itself is magical or special; it is Alessa who changes everything around.

So, what do you think?

EDIT: I also apologise if I put the thread in the wrong place. It says that the media center is reserved for music and such, so I was confused...

I was reading about this new iteration, and I even made a lot in one of my worlds inspired by images of Silent Hill, but I confess I've never played a Silent Hill game! Which one should I download (PC) to get a feel for the series? Is the original one available?

I'm all for games being set in the UK, so many are set in Asia or the USA so it's nice to have something a little more European once in a while. It's the atmosphere (feeling of the game) that would determine whether it fits in the franchise, I think?

I don't know where to get the games (especially the first one), and I also haven't played any Silent Hill game. I am not much of a gamer (besides Sims) and I like to watch other people play them (basically any youtuber). I do consider games to be an important work of art that challenges people, especially with puzzles that Silent Hill loves so much.

I think you should start with the first one, because, in my opinion, that one is the scariest one, but all of them are scary then again. However, I wouldn't advise to play the games after SH: The Room (the fourth one), because they are not as good (IMO). The devs basically started to mix monsters from the previous games, which is even more against the cannon, since the monsters in SH are like a projection of someone's mind.

I agree with the latter part; I also think that the atmosphere is important for a Silent Hill game. Basically, Alessa (a character from the first game) is the main reason why SH is special. Heather, the protagonist of the third SH game, experiences the otherworld outside of Silent Hill. The same is with SH4, but that game has always gained criticism for being very distant form other SH games.
