Increasing the file limit on Macs... what's the highest number I can safely use?
It's been common knowledge among Mac Simmers that we have to resist the temptation to cram too much CC crapola into our downloads folder, lest the dreaded Mac file limit be exceeded. But I never heard what
exactly happens
when that happens, until yesterday. The game will only load so many files at a time, and if there are too many for it to handle, it will load some and not others, and the some that are loaded may require the ones that aren't, leading to chaos. Plus, some of the files that don't load could be character files, which would explain why entire families disappear. Does that sound about right? It's starting to happen to one of my hoods on a regular basis, so I think it may be time to look at my file limit.
The majority of things I've seen out there talk about users with the Super Collection, running Mac OS 10.11 and higher. I'm in what is possibly a minority of one, and have neither; my machine is for the moment stalled at 10.8.5 (until I decide whether I want to upgrade).
So... does anyone remember as far back as 2012-ish,
what is the highest number I can safely put as my system's file limit? Mountain Lion, 10.8.5... Or
IS there even an upper limit? I'm guessing that there's probably no danger in
MY putting whatever number I want in there, as the OS is certainly not going to commit suicide by using a setting that it can't possibly operate with, right?
And, would the process be the same on my antiquated laptop, as for someone who has a more modern OS installed?
