Ran is the wife of Aegir , Ruler of the sea.
She rules over the realm of the dead which is situated on the bottom of the ocean.
She sinks ships and collects drowned sailors in her nets and takes them to her hall where she tenderly ministers them. Drowned persons neither go to Valhalla nor to Helheim, but to Ran's realm.
With Aegir she is the mother of nine daughters (the billow maidens), who wore white robes and veils. The names of the Billow Maidens are names of different kinds of waves.
Some sources implies that the Billow Maidens might be Heimdall 's nine mothers.
Ran and Aegir are connected to the Danish island Lesoe, as they were said to have lived there. Many ships have sunk around the island in storms among it's reeves through the ages, so it sounds like a perfect place for Ran to collect her drowned souls.
Ran is usually pictures with a fish-tail, like a mermaid.
