* GUNNLÖD *

(or Gunnlöð, Gunnlod; 'war-foam')

Gunnlod was a young jotungirl (giantess) and daughter of Suttung – who had the mead of poetry. Gunnlöd was set guard by her father in the cavern where he housed the mead and no one else was allowed near it.

The mead of poetry would make anyone who drank it able to compose very beautiful and profound poetry and speeches; giving wisdom to those who drank it.

According to Snorri; Gunnlöd was seduced by Odin to exchange three nights of with him for three sips of her father's mead. But Odin tricked the young girl and stole all of it, leaving the heartbroken Gunnlöd behind.

Another version of the story, from 'Hávamál' says that Gunnlöd helped Odin get all of it:

Gunnlod sat me in the golden seat,
Poured me precious mead:
Ill reward she had from me for that,
For her proud and passionate heart,
Her brooding foreboding spirit.

What I won from her I have well used:
I have waxed in wisdom since I came back,
bringing to Asgard Odhroerir,
the sacred draught.

Hardly would I have come home alive
From the garth of the grim troll,
Had Gunnlod not helped me, the good woman,
Who wrapped her arms around me.

The story doesn't really say if her father punished her for letting Odin close to the mead, or whether she fell in love with him or not, but no matter which version we choose; Gunnlöd was left behind – and as I imagine – with a yearning and maybe even broken heart.

I always pictured her as a very beautiful girl with an innocent and naively appearance.
