Abandoned Greenhouse Eco Home

Once a beautiful greenhouse open to the public, this building has long since been abandoned after funding ran dry. Now, the abandoned greenhouse has been given a new purpose: it has been turned into an eco home! Generate your own power, collect your own water, and live among the overgrown plants.

This lot is perfect for your solarpunk sim!

The Solarpunk movement is characterised by three guiding principles: anarchism, ecology, and justice. As an anarchist movement, it strives to imagine a post-scarcity, post-capitalist society devoid of hierarchy and domination. As an ecological movement, it promotes local production, creating self-sufficiency, and living in a way where both the human and non-human can flourish. As a movement that strives for justice, it seeks to rid society of marginalization and celebrate authenticity.

Solarpunk is a style of social imaginary that attempts to imagine a positive future where not only the climate crisis is averted, but also has both people and nature thriving. This imagination is derived from the punk identity that arose in the 1970’s. At its core, punk deconstructs the social status quo to call out injustices and inequalities, and wants to establish an authentic self. Solarpunk has these same goals, with the addition of reintegrating human and ecological systems.

Aesthetically, solarpunk blends the practical with beautiful, the well-designed with the green and lush, and the bright and colourful with the earthy and solid. It values design aspects such as creative reuse of existing infrastructure, art nouveau, and a Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli)-esque calmness.

This abandoned greenhouse eco home is part of my project to explore sustainable living beyond Eco Lifestyle’s emphasis on clean, sleek, and modern building styles. A downside of Eco Lifestyle’s design choices, is that people who do not connect with that imagery, would possibly also not connect to the topic of sustainability. This mod counters the clean, sleek, and modern style with solarpunk.
