rebalanced costs

this is a simple selection of xml tunings that attempt to re-jig the costs of in-game food + services. in some cases they are cheaper, but others become more expensive depending on the perceived luxury of a service or item.

overview of changes:
  • adopting a human sim, having the paper delivered, making a plumbot, hiring a maid, hiring a repairman, travelling, and purchasing the time portal or hoverboard are all more expensive to some degree
  • grocery and bookstore prices are 25% lower
  • the minimum and maximum sale amounts for bookstores and grocery stores have been reduced. the maximum sale is now 25% off
  • newspapers are delivered much earlier, at 6am instead of 9am, and there is only one newspaper delivery person as opposed to a pool of two
  • the minimum skill level for creating a plumbot is level seven. now your sim has to grind through making nanites and trait chips before being able to literally create hyper intelligent robotic life forms (by default there's no level requirement which is a bit bananas to me)
  • all travel costs are adjusted: costs per age are retuned to account for 'travel insurance' costs (elders are now the most expensive to travel with for this reason) - there's no actual travel insurance. in the vanilla game elders are one of the cheapest to travel with, and i know that's not true for real life mainly due to travel insurance and being seen as a liability by the travel industry in general
  • option one [default vacation lengths]: all the changes above and the vanilla vacation lengths remain:
    visa lvl. one: 3 days | visa lvl. two: 6 days | visa lvl. three: 8 days | visa lvl. four: 10 days | visa lvl. 5: 12 days
  • option two [longer vacation lengths]: all the changes above and the vacation lengths for each visa level are slightly increased:
    visa lvl. one: 3 days | visa lvl. two: 8 days | visa lvl. three: 12 days | visa lvl. four: 16 days | visa lvl. 5: 24 days

how to use:
download one of the files in the downloads section: either default vacation lengths or longer vacation lengths

all other changes are included in both zip files so you only need to download one of them

place in packages if there are no conflicts, or overrides if you use another tuning mod that changes one or more of the included xmls - note that you can either have all the changes from one xml or all the changes from another

conflicts:
use the Sims 3 Dashboard tool to easily detect conflicting xml files

gameplay suggestions:
  • match these costs to your sim's pay cheque with my realistic wages tuning mod
  • help out your sims in the outset + balance your sims when rolling in it with the taxes and benefits mod by phoebejaysims
  • stop the time portal and other annoyances spawning so you aren't tempted to take advantage of that higher time portal price with knight's annoyances disabler

future plans:
  • perhaps some more object price tuning, but i think i've adjusted the worst ones with the hoverboard and time portal
  • figure out whether i can adjust the sell price so there's no temptation to sell all the hoverboards and time portals in oasis landing
