I'm sure modders have known about this for a long time, and it is actually not a "bug" rather than a change in design by choice. EA clearly abandoned the romance skill and consolidated it with charisma. They probably couldn't even think of ways to use it, or due to limitations (of time and/or programming in general) just decided to abandon it altogether.

From what I've read/heard, there were other ideas that were abandoned, such as a family need meter, where supposedly you would have to socialize with your family every now and then, and a thirst meter that was supposed to be separate from hunger. There was even supposed to be a Power aspiration which was abandoned, and all the "power" wants, such as maximize skills, woohoo with 30 sims, have 10 babies, etc. were just distributed among the different aspirations.

I highly doubt that EA will ever go back into developing this romance skill for anything useful. It would require too much thought and an overhaul of the game engine, including how romantic actions currently work, as well as the chemistry/attraction system. You'd be foolish to hold your breath for this.

Syberspunk,

Thanks for these informations. The chemistry is hard-wired, as far as I know, but there's already some idea to modify these unwanted flirt actions in the back of my head. For that, the romance skill might find a new use

The Romance Skill is nonfunctional. It is not, in fact, a skill, except in a no-longer-included documentation file, and it is NOT recommended that you mess with it in any way, as Maxis may, in the future, recycle this attribute.

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I cannot accept, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill because they pissed me off.

Thanks for the hint, J. M. I will keep an eye on it when new EP's come out. But that's one of the reasons why I prefer programming a Neverwinter Nights world: in difference to Maxis, Bioware has a clear concept throughout their Add-On's, and they support the community with tons of informations about which number range is safe to use and which not, which functions have changed and what objects are affected, and so on. *sigh*

Aye, Maxis don't like modders tinkering with their game much.

It's interesting to note that Bioware take a more favourable view. So do Egosoft. They made the X-Universe games, and not only did they incorporate a script editor into the game itself(which is so easy to use that even I managed to write some pretty modest hacks with it on X2), but they recently released an EP for X3(which removes the need for "CD in drive", among many other things), that players can DL for FREE on their forum, and - within about a week - they'd taken onboard user feedback and ironed out the bugs, many of which were issues of compatibility with the more popular user-created hacks.

Not bad, considering the EP was free.

Alas my computer is too archaic to play X3, but when it's upgraded(hopefully soon), I shall.

Slightly off-topic there, but the point is that, like Bioware, Egosoft show far more support for their users' hacking than Maxis do.

Wow, 378 downloads for a hack that has no use. I don't mean to sound rude, but people should read the replys in a topic for further information about what they are downloading. The skill has no available things that will make sims get more interactions.

I have a feeling that Maxis has some thing in mind for this option or had something in mind. The reason I say this is that romance sims use to get the want "practice romance", but I have not seen it since OFB came out. It may still be there because I do not play many romance sims, so do not see as many of their wants as the aspirations I perfer to play. Thanks for looking into this CtfG.

@ Thraxwhirl: You're absolutely right! I bought X2 because of the editor, but when I found out that you cannot modify sector names / descriptions, I lost interest. But the point is: Egosoft (just like Bioware with NWN) have a *real* user support, and they do publish tons of information for modders / scripters / builders. Okay, The Sims and The Sims 2 were never designed to be messed with, but even Maxis should have realized by now that there is a need for certain objects / hacks, and maybe they will change their policy and give out a bit more info. But I doubt it.

@ someone2: True. But it is possible to build some nice mods around this skill, isn't it? Something like: married sims who are deeply in love with their partner will not react to flirts, except for those coming from sims with a high romance skill... Who knows?

Very nice work.

I for one, and I am sure many others as well, would very much like to see something like an anti-flirt response set of scripts that check for Romance skills.]

I play romance sims rather frequently (My Legacy Family is headed by a vampiric one), and even now as an (about 1000 day old) Adult I see the 'practice romance' want from time to time.

Optimally I would love to see a sim with a high romance skill succeed in interactions sooner than one without (Perhaps being able to 'kiss up arm' at a lower lifetime relation score than normal, etc).

It would certainly open up possibilities at least.

Perhaps after Seasons come out (and we see what kinds of mess EA makes).

PS: I dont blame your favoritism of NWScript over Sims2 coding. At least NWS was a variant of C++ and made some semblance of order without having to read the code infinitly.

With Seasons, the Romance skill has been reassigned, as you can read here:
Code:
my person data Romance Skill (0x6F) <= Const 0x202B(Motives - Fail/Distress - Values):0x21(-60 (0xFFC4))

This line comes from BHAV 0x246B, Group 0x7F01EC29. Since the Romance skill doesn't have any practical use in the game, I strongly recommend to de-install this hack or not to install it.

Thanks to Driskoll Xun who pointed out this possible conflict.

By the way I think the 'romance skill' Enables a sim, to its lover use the move 'love talk'
I think both characters need a high romance score and they need a lifetime relationship over 70 and i'm not sure about the daily. I used it once when my sim was dating a NPC.

So do you need this if you don't have Seasons?
