Hi everyone !

Commissioned to Raphael in 1518 by Pope Leo X for the benefit of Francis I of France as part of the diplomatic exchanges which sealed the King's recent alliance with the papacy. The theme of the archangel Saint Michael slaying the demon is a flattery towards the Order of Saint Michael, whose the King was grand master and whose very existence was the pledge of the union of France and of the Church, renewed on this date to fight against the Turks.
This painting is now on display at the Louvre Museum, Paris, France.
