Default Sims 2 Remaster might be real?
Did y'all just see what the Sims posted onto their social media?

For those who don't know, the Sims just posted a video featuring the sims 1 & 2 plumbobs, possibly hinting towards a remaster

What do we think? Do we think the sims 2 remaster is real?

At this point I have no doubt. I don't know if it's a full remaster, rerelease, or whatever, but I believe it will be available in some form.

I was hesitant at first (because this is EA we're dealing with), yet on the other side...this is EA we're dealing with, they want money. Sims games = money

No, their strategy for making money is to keep releasing new Sims 4 DLCs. They are not going to release something new that will directly compete with the Sims 4, because then fewer people will shell out for the like $500 worth of DLCs they have released for it or whatever ridiculous number it is.

Edit: I actually severely underestimated that number. I checked on Steam, it is actually around $900 of DLCs.

Do you have a link to the video/post?

I doubt there's a remaster in the works (and if - that's a BIG IF - they did, I'd prefer it if they just upgraded TS2 to 64 bit, offered it for free again, and left it at that - same for TS1).

Depending on how old the video was (days/up to a week or two) It's entirely possible the "hinting" was for the event that introduces old TS1/TS2/TS3(?) items back into TS4 (the dance cake, wall phones, etc.)

Oh gosh, if it's true imagine how awful it could be. Having to launch through the EA app, no offline play, loot boxes, those timed challenge things they do for Sims 4, updates, mods breaking... On the other hand it could be great if they released 64bit Sims 1 and 2, and kept it offline. More likely that they will have AI remaster it, so that sims have between 2 and 8 fingers on each hand and you can share your flaming bed recolour with your friends through the gallery. What a time to be alive!

Just saw this one:
https://simscommunity.info/2025/01/...c-confirmation/

Looks more like it's a re-release (possibly with Store content???), though it's a bit vague.

a re-release seems more feasible than a remaster. They had it on Origin once upon a time as the UC.

Uh oh! My social bar is low - that's why I posted today.

It may have a new engine and old mods not working, and massively increased hardware requirements and Windows 11. I don't like how the term "remaster" is used in the game industry. The game is often overhauled from the ground up. In analogue to audio production, it should be called a remix with additional recording.

Quoting the article you link to;

"According to a source familiar with the plans, both games will be released digitally on PC later this week. They’re expected to arrive with all of their original expansion packs included, but it remains unclear if the legacy games will also make it to consoles at some point."

The article seems to be written by someone who is unfamiliar with the console versions of TS1 and TS2. Anyway, I hope a re-release with all EP/SPs is all it's gonna be. I don't want a shitty "definitive" edition with extra graphical fancies. Why? Because it'll fuck up our lovely modding community here. Imagine having to make mods for two different versions of the game, or the headache it would be to convert existing CC to a new .package format.

What you're thinking of is a remake. Remasters and remakes are two different things. One takes the existing game and updates it, the other (remakes) do as it suggests - remake the entire game from the ground up.

The only reason why remasters get a bad rep is because greedy corporations, like EA, usually tend to ruin more of a game than they actually improve. Those awful GTA DE versions are an example of ruining a game rather than improving it.

Well, a remake has most assets new like Black Mesa or Skyblivion. But in a remaster they would still transfer the old content into a new engine. Gamers like a new engine as if the old one could have worn out or rusted. When a game is poorly received, they often say it's because the engine was old. The game may have a GUI that looks superficially similar, but the engine would have a feel to it. Like you slide and jump like in the other game, say, Unreal. And of course the technical side of it. No anti-aliasing requiring a dense HD monitor, new Windows needed, and no old mods.

I resent how the new GTA was put up as the main version on a fan forum, as if they were worshippers of everything new or in the pocket of the publisher.

What's an example of a good remaster that has few elements of a remake in it?

I'm sure that all of us Sims 2 players would be thrilled to be able to play our beloved game in an updated format of the newer computers. To stop needin to jump through hoops to make an antiquated game run on computers that are much newer with more advanced hard and software, to stop all the crashes, the dreaded pink soup, and all the frustrating issues that crop up tryin to get the old and new to play nice together.

I was forced into a Windows upgrade (from 7 to 10) roughly a year or so ago. I was so dreading it as I'd heard many horror stories along with the problems with 4gb patch, pink soup, and the like. I still have and use my original disks and because I have some wonderful friends that gave me very detailed instructions on what I needed to go to install the game with Win10 it really was a breeze and didn't have any hiccups. I've also not had any issues in regards to pink soup or crashing. I feel very fortunate for bein spared this (as of yet.. my time may still come ).

With regrards to EA rereleasing the game, remastering, updating, or whatever it is as that is a possible from the rumor mills that are churning with speculation, I am sort of two minds on this. On the one had it would be great if they did ineed fix the issues that people are having so as to allow them to play again (and if/ when my time comes me as well). Then again, on the other hand if an "updated for today's computers" version was released I would be very hesitant in wanting it. I mean, yes it'd be great that it plays, but what did they break to fix it, this IS EAxis after all. How many of my favorite mods, mods of creators who've long left the community so very unlikely to be updated with whatever so called fixes EAxis did, would cease to work?

I said this a year or so ago when a post was made about a possible upgrade, rerelease (or whatever) was made and that is the best thing that EAxis could do for Sims 2 and the community is to release it's code and allow our exceptionally talented modders do what they may with it. Let them stick with milkin the Sims 4 players and then move on to the 5'ers and leave us 2's, and our game, alone.

And I have the UC in my EA app now, so I hope I can just keep it there. Sigh.

This is what happened to me-and to make matters worse, one of my original disks would not read at all for the installation into the new computer. That meant none of it would read at all because it was one of the important EP's-NL.

I was panicked about my game until someone showed me the UC collection with the RPG (and it is NOT on Origin or whatever that app is called now) and while I was rather wary of installing it, that went into my computer like butter and i haven't had one instance of pink soup or other problems yet. I have it as a download on the computer. Nobody will ever take it away from me.

But I don't think EA is going to re-release the older game again. It doesn't make any financial sense for them to do so-especially when their targeted audience is the one that plays Sims 4.

Who were the most disappointed, angry and unhappy people in the universe when they found out EA was not going to make Sims 5.

This might just be something to placate those players, nothing more.

I'm having a hard time believing EA would put in the time and effort to make the game actually work on modern systems. I suspect they would re-release it for free on the EA App but with no additional improvements or support to actually work. I hope I'm wrong though!

No, it's not going to be a remaster. Most likely just a rerelease of the UC. I wouldn't even count on it being updated to work with windows 10/11. Even the UC required manually updating graphicsRules. :D

I doubt there'll be any major changes. I expect they'll make it more compatible with modern systems, so you don't have to fiddle with external tools to get it working. And I think an updated UI is a given though, since the existing one doesn't play super nicely with widescreen displays (e.g. when you're in CAS, the interface obscures the Sim). TS1 will probably be fixed so that widescreen works properly (there are visual problems with the current methods of playing in widescreen).

Quality issues like that are most likely why they've never re-released them up to this point. I know it's EA, but even they know there's a bare minimum standard to be met with this.

Oh my God. Did they never hear of quality, not quantity?

But one thing you can’t do as easily in the current entry is kill Sims by trapping them in pools and taking the ladder away. That was a favorite pastime of OG fans, and the long-memed feature seems likely to return in the remasters. Sims players will no doubt riot if it doesn’t.

Yes, because the only reason that players would prefer an older game is if it offered enhanced killing options lol.

Difficult to say for certain, but I believe this might be the first time in years EA has "officially" reused assets/referenced The Sims 1, beyond an occasional verbal and copyright-safe nod to its legacy. Considering how meticulously guarded and calculated EA tends to be with their IP, exposing something so directly tied to the classic games in their website mighttttttttttttttttt mean something. Maybe it’s a small crack in the door to something fun down the line. Or maybe I’m just being optimistic! But here's the thing, I'm never optimistic otherwise!

It's a re-release: https://simscommunity.info/2025/01/...2-release-leak/ (no details yet, except for "updated for Win10/11". The UC was supposedly updated for Win10 too, so I doubt they've done too many changes. Now they likely want money for it, though ).

^ That, too (I hope George will still work, or maybe a close relative??? )

(My UC probably still thinks it's running via the old Origin app, even if they've not been in contact for the past 4-5 or so years - you keep dreamin' EA, that thing was for installation only )

I'm not planning to install that version of the game unless
1: It's free to download (or free if you already own the full game - I own all the EP/SP, pretty sure I paid full price for most of them back in the day, no way I'm buying the whole game again)
2: It's 64-bit (for better memory handling) and is otherwise actually optimized for newer computers (reads video cards from 2020+ era, works with whatever screen resolutions computers have... basically plug and play (no messing with GraphicRules and all kinds of tools to even get the game to start up, let alone have it not freak out like the computer is on fire because fullscreen isn't DirectX compatible or whatever).
3: George (or close relative) will work (no way I'm logging in to the app every time I want to play. There's a reason I barely play TS4 any longer... )
4: It doesn't mess with existing CC/mods
