How to change the name of a neighborhood?
Simple question. I want to change the name of a Maxis neighborhood. What do I have to edit to do this?

Thanks.

Well.. technically you don't. What you can do is Save your game and change the name of the world. When I start a new game in Sunset Valley, I save my game as Sunrise Valley. I know not imaginative enough but I like keeping it simple. I usually save Twinbrooks as Brookhaven, Bridgeport as Port Bridges, Hidden Springs as Springdale and Riverview as Three Rivers.

Hope that helps. Happy simming

Doesn't your method only change the save file name, not the world?

But the name of the saved game is primarily where the world is called by name anyway. You may need to change the names of a few lots or rabbitholes to completely change things, but changing the name of the saved game accomplishes quite a lot.

If you want to change the name of the world so it shows up with a different name in the world dropdown list, that'd be a mod. You'd need to find the location(s) of the string in the binary .world file; and I'm told that the string is used in several places, and that the world will crash if they aren't all the same.

You'd want to ask about that in the Create area, probably in the CAW forum, though the Modding Discussion folks might also be able to help you.

Not gonna move this thread, in case just changing the name of the save file is enough to accomplish what you want Otherwise, try posting over there (and be prepared to bust out a hex editor and/or S3PE! Not sure exactly how to go about making the change.)

It's the answer to a lot of questions related to things you can do USING mods, but not to most questions you would need to resolve by MAKING a mod

The thing with custom CAW worlds is that apparently they will not have their names appear in every instance the game calls for one. At least in none of the custom worlds that I have played so far the name of that world is mentioned in all those dialogues where a town name should appear, like when you receive an award at Town Hall for completing a challenge in an Ambitions profession. They neither appear in the Location line when you take a photo. The strings are simply empty.
Maybe this has been an oversight by the creators or it simply is not possible and would require those worlds to be included in some database in the game itself.

It doesn't change the name of the world, no but it's the closest you get to changing the name of the world. You can't change Sunset Valley.. it will always be Sunset Valley or Twinbrooks/Bridgeport/Hidden Springs. LIke I said, technically you can't change the name of the world.

Technically you CAN, I THINK, but it requires directly modifying the world files, afaik.

Interesting... I still think it should be possible to fix by hex editing the file if nothing else works though!

In caw I can change the name of my world whenever I want, but it may be different for EA's worlds somehow. Going backwords from a sims3pack file to a caw file though, is a bit of a hassle. For my world I would have to find the file in the DCBackup folder and then I can probably just change the file from a package to a world file, or something. Then I can just rename it in caw.

There's a cheat code for it I think, but I've forgotten what it is.

Hm, well if it's that complex I'll probably just stick to the save game name. I haven't come across the "Lucky Palms" name since I named my save file. It would be nice to change it completely, but if it's worth the effort...

Hold down the control-shift-c keys, type in "testingcheatsenabled true" - without quotes, type in "help" - without quotes, then look up the cheat. (There should be descriptions for most to find out what each one does)

Not that hard.

Well, I found a cheat that seems like it does what what I need it to and entered "worldname Black Springs". It didn't tell me the command was invalid, so I'm guessing it worked.

Ironically though, where can you even look to see what the world is called now (in the save, not on the menu starting a new game)? I feel like my original question was fairly pointless, lol.

The newspaper usually says the name of the world somewhere if you wait long enough.

I've seen long ago in the What Did You Discover thread. There's a world name that's represented in the main menu on the new game world selection, and there's in-game name for it. Someone posted in that thread that in the custom world he was using, the world creator forgot to include the in-game name, resulting an empty string when the name's mentioned in the top left message. His Sim was rewarded a trophy by the <Empty String> mayor.

Btw, I'm sure you can only technically change the world name from CAW.

That could have been me, as it is one thing that irritates me with custom worlds for whatever obsessive reason. Because in the meantime it has turned out that it was not that one particular world but all of them and therefore I have made several posts in various forums trying to find out why this is so and how I could fix this. But I haven't gotten any answers up until now.
I am so going to try out that cheat now.

No, there is no "worldname" cheat in a vanilla game. I just tried.

I got it with DebugEnabler, though, but it doesn't seem to do anything in-game. Renamed Sunset Valley to Sunrise Mountain and neither the photographs taken nor the notifications took that into consideration. Christopher Steele has been conferred the new title of Empty Net Trawler by the Sunset Valley Town Council and the photo he took of some random plant to capture this glorious moment was also made in Sunset Valley, not Sunrise Mountain. The save option also lists Sunset Valley and the files are still named Sunset Valley, too.

Edit: this is the cheat description in the console
worldname - Overrides world name. Usage: worldname [off,UserCreated,SunsetValley,RiverView, Egypt,China,France,NonShipping,TwinBrook, StarlightSho (here my cheat window ends)]

DebugEnabler is a Nraas mod? So that worldname cheat must be something that was never finished?

... Hi.
I know I am very late, but if anybody is still interested in knowing how to properly define the name of any custom world, I wrote a tutorial about it. You can find it here:
