Default Finding a way that some of my Sims might outlive me
I've been vaguely thinking of sharing some of my Sims with a few of my friends here on MTS for a while now -- at least since the Covid lockdowns. I'm now three and a half years over my "allotted span" of threescore and ten years. As my grandmother used to put it, I'm "living on borrowed time". My father died at 70 and my grandfather at 60. I've outlived both of them. If by any chance the Grim Reaper were to come for me tonight, my Sims would all die with me. Their only chance of outliving me is if I share them with somebody while I'm still here. I'm not planning on going soon, but I am aware that I'm slowing down. I try to, keep fit, but with diabetes and osteoporosis, I'm not likely to reach my century.

Way back in 2014, when I thought that there was terminal corruption in our Veronaville, I made safe clones of all my CAS Sims in Veronaville. In view of the slow pace of my game, most of them of look much the same now as they did then -- apart from buying new clothes that is! There is one possible problem with the clone I made of Andrew. He had an attack of acne at the time I made the clone. This probably isn't a problem, but because I've never restored from such a clone, I'm a bit afraid that the the acne zits might turn into permanent incurable facial blemishes. For that reason I'm thinking of initially sharing Andrew with one Simmer here (I'm thinking of you, simsample!). If his acne clears up, I'll share him more widely. If not, I'll make a new clone of him.

I am indeed unwilling to share Andrew and his friends publicly, because the thought of them being deliberately tortured does rather horrify me, but if I don't share them at all, then they will undoubtedly die with me. I've a few people I'm thinking of sharing them with, and I'll PM you in the next few days. I'm not going to make any sign in blood a pledge to look after them for ever, but I will ask people to treat them with some love and respect. I suppose my relationship with these Sims is as near to having children as I'll ever get.

I've now made a start -- I've sent Andrew -- as extracted and cloned in 2014 to simsample, to see if the acne issue is resolved. Depending on how that goes, I'll be in touch with a lot of you soon.

How very exciting to finally get to see Andrew in my own game!

I always like to think that my sims continue to live on even after my computer is switched off. Even though logically that's impossible! But in my head it's sort of like that Star Trek episode where they gave a holodeck character a whole virtual universe to live in. Only my sims can step out of the computer and into our reality but only when we aren't looking. This explains the lost socks and missing biscuits.

I have already shared my sim, Sim Sample, with a few people and I think I posted the links here once or twice. Anyone can have him if they send a PM to me! I have never got around to uploading him properly, it is something I should do! Since he's been my avatar for over 20 years.

Re: Andrew, I already mentioned to you in a message that I have a shirt texture and mesh, but they don't seem to match. About the acne though, it's fine- there is no option to use acne cream on the medicine cabinet, but if I shift-click on the sim with debug mode turned on, I can select *Toggle Zits and then have him wash his face, and the acne vanishes.

If I create a sim in CAS, as you know it asks for a parent. So it would be great to have Gloria along with Andrew, as that way I could make them as a townie family in a current game. If Julian were shared too, then townie Andrew could be paired with townie Julian- otherwise I think, for me, it would seem odd to put Andrew in a romantic relationship without him! My townies are very much played, I have a lot of house parties to which they are all invited (or summoned, in case of new townies, so that they can meet people), and also do a lot of comm lot play, so they all build relationships with my playables and often get moved in as these relationships develop.

For my sims, if I like a character I will sometimes play them in more than one neighbourhood (a lot of the sims in my current hood were created in other hoods and brought together in this one). I'm comfortable with this and also comfortable with having other people play my sims and do whatever they want to them. Will you be okay with people changing Andrew to suit their own games? Such as sexual orientation, personality, clothes etc., what about playing him in games where he could get into danger (my sims do have maids, but parties can be messy and there are sometimes roaches, as well as outdoor hot tubs with lightning).

All things to think about, because you know we will all be sharing pictures!

Hey, your mum made 90+, so don't go looking for the hula dancers just yet! You'll get Andrew to University yet!

I wouldn't want to share a sim of mine if they were going to be changed so much that they weren't the same sim (sexual orientation, personality, etc.). But I'm the kind of person who watches a movie and complains that it isn't close enough to the book. XD I still wouldn't be a good choice for Andrew etc. though lol. I am not fond of Veronaville fashion or the no jealousy mod. And my game isn't safe either. I don't have no fires or no ghosts and I have Seasons with lightning.

I've shared my self-pixel. I don't want to know how she's been treated. I put her out there for people to play and enjoy. Once you release something into the wild, you lose control of it.

I just hope she has had a far more successful life than I have in parts. That's all I can wish for.

And if anyone wants to download her, she's still available at my Mediafire site-in my links.

Be kind to her-she's only 70 now.

I have had so many sims over the years who was made in CAS, born in the game, grew up, went to Uni, grew old and died - not sure I can remember them all!

But there are many that I do remember, some because they were simply spectacular, like Sterling and Faith Hamilton. He was knowledge, she was Pleasure. He was serious, she was playful. He was neat, she was the sloppiest sim I have seen in all my years of playing. I could not quite understand them falling in love - later, I discovered that Sterling had the hidden dance skill! He cleaned up her mess while she was playing kicky bag, he studied while she was singing her folk song to the kids, he meditated while she was jumping on the sofa with the kids - but when there was a party - they could have danced all night

There was my Mr No Nice Points, Alex Grey, who used to beat up his best friend's wife (he had one!) all the time, even at the wedding. Alex was extremely entertaining, though, and while I am not sure I liked him very much, I did miss him after he was gone.

Now there is Daniel Silke, who was supposed to be boring, but he simply has never been boring, and now that he is a distinguished elder, I believe I will outlive him, even though, at 68, I am probably older than he is! However, young Daniela has wormed her way into my heart and I am determined to see her and her 8 siblings - and their friends, the Appleby, Evans and Doyle kids - go through their entire lives.

Hopefully, instead of leaving my sims around, I hope some of the silly things I have written about them all will inspire players to try and make their own unique sims, be patient enough to play them all the way from birth to death and just have enormous fun while doing so!

I don't regard myself as very patient, time seems to fly in my hood. It seems, though, that some other players may be in a bit of a hurry, although it may just be my impression.

I have an update!

I thought about moving Andrew and Gloria into one of my existing hoods, but they are all so... dramatic and have lots of fury and kicking over of bins and gnome theft and so on. So I thought, well why don't I build a whole new hood just for them to live in? I could add some of my old favourite sims from my hoods over the years- the ones that keep getting played over again, like Sim Sample and Nery.

And then I thought, well- whaddya know, I just happen to have a completed Channelwood rebuild hanging around, that's one of my old favourite hoods from many, many years ago. I was rebuilding it to upload, but that's just another of those things I've been procrastinating over for about 100 years. So what better way to test it out?

It was lovely to see Andrew and Gloria happy in their new home in Garden Road, Channelwood. I think she'll be glad to be free of the tight planning regulations of the Eastside Veronaville conservation area. 19 Chorus Court felt quite spacious when only Gloria and Andrew were living there, but it can get a bit cramped now that Garry and Julian have moved in. The bird pictures in the bedroom will remind her of the downstairs wallpaper in Chorus Court.

The gold shorts bikini I sent you is one of Gloria's workout outfits. In Chorus Court she has both the obstacle course that she got during her time in the army, and the punchball from the athletic career. The obstacle course takes up a lot of space in the garden, but I'm sure there are mods to make the punchball buyable.

If you changed Andrew's sexual orientation and personality, then it really wouldn't be Andrew. It would be somebody else who looked a little bit like him. I have no problem with him changing his clothes though. Andrew has the fullest wardrobe in my game. His school (unlike mine!) has no set uniform, but Andrew generally dresses for school (and church) as he feels is appropriate -- grey or black shorts, shirt and tie. He then changes into mas casual, and generally sexier clothes when he gets home, as indeed I usually did myself (only my teenage casual clothes weren't sexy!). He does however have a decidedly gay style of clothes that he likes. It would be odd if he started wearing clothes that didn't match that style.

I definitely don't ever want to ever log in to MTS to see a picture of Andrew burning to death. That would be one of the worst things I could imagine. So, if anything horrific like that does ever happen to him, please just quietly resurrect him, and don't tell me! He always wanted to be saved from death.

I am currently preparing the Moltke family (including Julian) to send to you. Garry Mackay (now Garry Jones) too. It's proving quite a big job, as they all have lots of clothes! (Though not of course quite as many as Andrew.) I'll post again soon with pictures of Maxis clothes that Andrew and Gloria have in their wardrobes. I mght just edit this post if nobody else posts in the thread.

That neighbourhood looks nice. I really want to see what the bunker for Pescado looks like. XD Maybe I should get myself a Pescado sim.

If you clone a sim for uploading/sending to someone, do they keep only the clothes that they're wearing or do they keep whatever was set for all their outfits?

This should help you with figuring out the One True Hobby.

Here is the whole island so far:

The FFS Bunker is in the farm field, I think it may be the tallest structure now!

It's taller than the Pantheon of Holistic Cheeses (white building with the tower), anyway!

I've moved some more sims in too, as well as Andrew and Gloria:

I'm making some townies now!

That is a really cool island. I hope you do end up uploading it.

I might have to dig out where you posted Sim Sample as well. XD He can live with Pescado in a bunker. XD

They only keep whatever outfit SimPE chose to export them in. It will be one of their regular outfits, but it may not be their Everyday outfit. When I exported Brigitte Moltke (Julian's younger sister) a couple of days ago, SimPE chose to export her in a black bikini, which is indeed her regular swimwear. But when I checked her home lot, she was actually in bed and therefore wearing her pyjamas. (She is one of the few more conventional Sims in my game, who actually wears pyjamas to bed rather than skimpy underwear. Actually her pyjamas [from Simphany.com] are quite skimpy too, but . . . she lives in Veronaville, where everybody wears skimpy clothes!) I'll be sending simsample her everyday outfit separately. It's having to get all their outfits (or at least a good selection of them) out of the game and sending them to simsample that's making this take so long. But once I've done it for simsample, and established that everything works, it should be relatively easy to send them to other people.

The process that I use for exporting, cloning and packaging Sims is a bit complex, so I'll try to describe it in detail with illustrations.: I'll spoiler the tutorial as it contains a lot of large images.

[EDIT] May I ask people to read through that tutorial, and tell me if you spot anything that could be improved. Right at the moment I feel too tired to proof-read it properly.

@Charity : If you think my tutorial is any good at all, could you please add it to your post about assorted tutorials.

Now I'll get on with my main task of getting the Moltkes and Garry over to simsample's Channelwood. Along with a lot of clothes, and pictures to show which Maxis clothes are in their wardrobes. Oh and send them Gloria's bicycle too.

Damn. I have some exported sims whom I arranged every clothing category for. Oh, well.

Although, adding the entire wardrobe might be overkill. XD

I am baffled as to how your quote of my post has a spelling error when the original doesn't lol. I went rushing back to fix it and it wasn't there.

I'll wait and see if you do put your tutorial into the Tutorials forum (which is a good idea), because I don't add those tutorials into my thread.

@AndrewGloria, I think I might be half your age and I'm also thinking about this (I don't need to know your actual age ). I've over hundred of sims in my main 'hood and play them all in rotation and it takes forever. I don't mind thou.
I think I'll take my sims with me to the grave. Or upload the whole game file to the internet and let people run wild with it (if anyone is intrested).
Another "solution" to this dilemma could be to write their story, like a zine or book. I think people would read it.

ive thought of something similar. i dont know how well the game will play when i pass (probably not well, if at all) but i thought about passing down my hard drive to my younger relatives when i pass. this game is everything to me. anything to prevent them from being put in a trash-heap.

I'm anxious at the moment because I have Julian Moltke-Jones in transit, awaiting move in to Channelwood. I know Andrew must be missing him! But, alas! I've been so very busy this past couple of weeks, I haven't even had chance to fire up the game. Busy busy summer! I hope they will all forgive me.

I've never made a Sim of myself and probably never will, lol. Seeing myself as a Sim and acting like a Sim would be too weird for me, lol. And then it would be like breaking the fourth wall seeing myself interacting with the all of the characters (I can imagine Angela Smyth aka Angela Pleasant asking why I had to turn her delinquent as a teen and make her life so difficult, and Maggie Shaw aka Dina Caliente demanding I write it into the story that her sister is freed, lol). They don't have real souls, they're never allowed to meet their creator!

I wouldn't mind fighting people like Kennedy Cox though.

I used to love when people wrote Sim Stories back in the day, and included their Sim selves, so the sims could go to them and complain about how the story was developing.
