Moving a sim between neighborhoods
Hi all -

I'm thinking about moving one of my sims from Strangetown to the Bluewater Village shopping district (if that's even possible btw, I'm just assuming based on being able to move bin families into it) and I'm wondering a few things.
1, will my sim lose their memories
2, will other sims lose memories about my sim
3, will they be cut from their family tree.
I'm wondering because I've heard things about Sims losing memories when moving neighborhoods but I don't know if that applies to the shopping district neighborhood. If that's even true at all.

Please let me know - and if there's anything else I should know before doing this! :D

Strangetown is the main hood and Bluewater Village the shopping hood - yes, you can. The game regards it as one hood. If you attach other shopping hoods, or downtown, you can move sims between them as well.

What you can't do, is to move sims from one main hood to another.

If you put the sim's house into the lot bin without moving them out first, that's the same thing as moving them to a new main hood and everything will break. If you just move them out into the family bin and then move them into a house in Bluewater Village, it'll be fine.

The thing to remember is that each main hood in your game is its own little world. Sims transported between these worlds will be wiped clean and left empty and amnesiac.

A main hood with subhoods attached is all one world and people can move around freely within that world without losing anything.

The lot bin exists in between worlds.

The family bins exist in the worlds where you can see them. Duplicate characters in different family bins are living in alternate universes.

Ugly is in the heart of the beholder.

There is one thing about moving Households that drives me crazy.

When you move 'between worlds', the 'Conscious' memories will be erased,
but 'Subconscious' memories will stay in the file.
Every person or place they met will show up in PackClean as Packages Ghosts.
These pile up almost exponentially, for a hundred Packaged Sim,
You may have thousands of Packaged Ghosts that increase loading time.

Yes, those are stub files, it's the way the game deals with relationships for sims that have been moved to another neighbourhood. Perfectly okay, but not really desirable:

Between the main hood and subhoods it's fine to move sims around. Just don't do it by chucking the whole lot into the family/lot bin, as this severs their family ties and memories with other sims in the hood (family bin is shared between main/subhoods, lot bin is shared between all hoods - player-made occupied lots from the lot bin can be iffy, as they carry a lot of stub files).

Move the family to the family bin first, then you can move them wherever you want within the hood/subhoods.

----

Safest way to move sims between main hoods (if you want to use a copy of the sims in a different hood) is to "reset" them by extracting and then cloning + packaging them in Bodyshop, and make a new family in the new hood.

For lots, you can extract the lot without sims (no need to move out the sims first from the original hood - this method is not done by packaging the lot), and clean it up with SimPE and/or Chris Hatch's cleaning globe item, tutorial here:
https://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=609188
(Previously occupied lots can be somewhat iffy, with leftover items and other potential problems, so I don't advice to upload them, but they're ok for personal use).

Sims will lose memories and (non-CAS) family ties this way, but between different main hoods there's nothing tying them to the other hood anyway. You can set family/friend/etc. ties and whatever else you need with a mod afterward.
That way you don't end up with a bunch of junk/stub files.

I suggest you go look at April's NH corruption video - There's a bit on occupied lots/moving sims and occupied lots between hoods (not as bad as previously thought, but it can still make a messy NH, so it's best avoided).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cB67DGDXFQ

Not sure what you mean about "PackClean" - is it the same as "Sims2Pack Clean Installer"?

"Cleaning" occupied lots in Clean Installer isn't advicable. Still going to be stub files left over, as Clean Installer doesn't clean the internal workings of lot files (SimPE and CH's cleaner globe are better tools for this). Clean Installer is meant for installing Sims2Pack files and managing CC in these files. It doesn't do a whole lot more than that.

I just brought up "Sims2Pack Clean Installer" because it illustrates
what I was talking about with 'Packaged Ghosts' piling up.
Got the impression Player was new at this, tried to keep it simple.

Tried deleting Sims or lots with it and seemed to work but won't bring it up anymore.
Never have had any corruption issues moving from Hood to Hood.

One easy, safe trick is 'Save Household to File' as soon as installed,
before they meet anyone. Gives you a 'clean' one you can copy and use anywhere.

Personally, I Tire of hearing about SimPE. If works for you, fine.
I hear it's about a 50/50 split between like/hate. I'll avoid it.

Point is, that "trick" isn't safe. It's a good way to get your game cluttered with a lot of stub files, though. Perhaps a bit less if the family/household/lot is straight from CAS and the lot hasn't been played before, but even CAS sims generate stub files when they're torn from a hood and put into the occupied lot bin.

You do you, in your own game - but at least don't go around telling other people it's perfectly safe to do things that have the potential to cause a big mess in their games.

SimPE is used by a lot of simmers, for quite a lot of things, since it's one of the basic editing tools for TS2 - it's used for making CC and mods, extracting sims, editing hoods/sims, and pretty much anything regarding Package files. It's not relly a "well, if it works for you..." kind of program (unless it won't run on your computer, or you don't have any interest in looking into tutorials, I guess).

Most of the ones who "hate" it I'd think are people who find the program a bit difficult to use, since it's not the easiest program to learn. These days there are some alternative programs that can do some of the tasks in SimPE with easier UIs and such, but there are still things that can only be done in SimPE.

That's what I said:
the family/household/lot is straight from CAS and the lot hasn't been played before,
Not Torn from a Hood

Maybe it's a bit less messy - but it's still messy.

If you place a lot and put a family in it, that lot is, strictly speaking, already placed in -that- hood, even if you haven't played the family more than "move in and get out". So you're "tearing" them from that hood if you place the occupied lot in the lot bin.
Hence the stub files.

The new family is not a completely blank slate in the family bin. The sims may not have ties to anyone outside the lot, but the sims/lot and new hood still generate stub files because the sims are set up with memory files and such ("met mystery sim..." etc.) after having been generated in CAS.

If I remember correctly, April shows some testing of this particular scenario in her video.

The game gives you an option of 'Save lot to File'.
The new lot stays put and an unplayed duplicate
shows up in Downloads outside the game.

I'm sure you know this, don't want to have a Miscommunication.

Will admit I may not be ambitious enough to jump into SimPE.
Just trying to Help when I can.
Never heard the phrase 'stub' files before, they do add up.

A player-made occupied lot is a "sims ripped away from hood" lot.

Doesn't matter if you place the occupied lot in the lot bin and put it in a new hood, or if you package the occupied lot and install it - the game sees them the same when you put them in a new hood.

Even if you put them in the same hood, they'll act like this (they'll be duplicate sims separate from the other sims, and there will be stub files - they don't keep family ties or memories related to other sims).

Well, in your last thread you seemed to be talking about deleting sims and lots from the neighbourhood files using Clean installer, which is definitely a bad idea and will cause corruption.

No, because moving sims between neighbourhoods by sticking them all in the lot or family bin is allowed by the game mechanics, and stub files are the way the game deals with this. Messy, but not corruption. If you delete the stub files with Clean Installer though, that will cause corruption.

Have read moving Households Hood to Hood caused corruption.
Been doing it for years, had no corruption, but is messy.

I never used Clean Installer to delete stub files.
I've never used Anything to delete stub files. It doesn't work.

I tried using Clean Installer in one small hood to delete Townies and Unused Lots.
Been told Bad Idea, won't recommend. Still have experiment.

Glad I 'fessed up about no SimPE. Enjoy the Game.

Clean Installer doesn't delete anything. It just installs packages.

You can delete package files through Clean Installer (right click>remove package).
In a previous post, JOHNCzee seemed to be talking about viewing the neighbourhood lots and character files in Clean Installer, and removing packages from there. But maybe I misunderstood what they were saying.

You can view Neighborhoods in Clean Installer.
Just go to the bottom of the list and use Browse.

Usually when deleting, I move to a TEMP file just in case.

You can view files in Clean Installer. Moving/renaming stuff in the Neighborhoods folder is not the same as editing hoods. You can view those same files in a regular folder browser. Deleting from a folder and deleting with Clean Installer is essentially the same thing if you're browsing files. Deleting files from the Neighborhoods folder most likely will cause issues in the neighborhoods (deleting sims or lots from there is not advicable).

The Clean Installer doesn't go any deeper than previewing a few resources in package files, mostly text and textures - it can't edit them. The preview is mostly there for recognizing CC (for removing or finding) before installing a Sims2pack file.
(Unticking files in a Sims2pack file deselects them so they don't get installed. There's a differece between this and browsing files on your computer with the Clean Installer).

With SimPE you can view and edit the actual contents of the Package files (resources inside the files), not just the plain files. Via the Hood editor it can also view and edit connections between sims/lots/etc.

That's not deleting things with Clean Installer, that's just using Clean Installer as a file browser for some reason. I don't know why you would want to do that, Windows already comes with a perfectly fine file browser.

Starting to feel sorry for 'lost-kitteh'.

Such a Simple Question.

All I said was you would get 'Packaged Ghosts', or 'Stub' Files.

'Yes, those are stub files, it's the way the game deals with relationships for sims that have been moved to another neighbourhood. Perfectly okay, but not really desirable...'
Well said.

You don't need Clean Installer , SimPE or worry about Sims torn or ripped away.

I don't know why you'd need to feel sorry for anyone? We're still on theme, and the OP's questions were answered at the top (you can move sims around in the main hood and its subhoods without them losing memories/relationships, as long as you use the proper ways like moving them out/to the family bin - NOT via the occupied lots bin), and also further down (you can not move sims between main hoods OR via the occupied lots bin without them losing memories/relationships and/or creating stub files).

You've been talking about moving sims around via the Occupied Lots bin, which isn't a good way to move sims around within a main hood and its subhoods OR between main hoods (it severs the packaged family from their current hood, and creates stub files when placed in a hood - and yes, those stub files can build up if you place multiple Occupied Lots in a hood).

You could perhaps argue for between hoods (they'd lose memories either way you do it, though the 'clean' method doesn't create stub files) - but if you want to move sims within the main+sub hoods and also want them to keep memories and all that, moving them via the Occupied Lots bin is definitely not the way to go.

Yeah, but windows explorer won't show you the thumbnail of package files. This is why some people use it as a package file browser.

Clean Installer has more functions than some people may realize, but it cannot replace SimPE - obviously, SimPE is not as scary as some people think either or that hard to use.

I have deleted lots with Clean Installer from my lot bin - easy enough to do when your lot bin is just too full. You can see the pics too, which makes it quite easy.

However, SimPE was extremely valuable when I built my custom hoods and I have since used it for a number of other things (changing clothing categories, for one).
